Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
Actually you measure the inside as that is what touches the pulleys. There should be some kind of writing on the outside of the belt telling you the size of the belt. It's in belt talk so it won't be real; apparent. Unless you're going to order online, just take the belt along with you. If you are ordering online, what I do now is take a piece of rope. wrap the rope around the pulley and I put a pair of vice grips at the point where the rope overlaps the end. Then measure from the vice grips to the end and that will get you pretty close. - Original Message - From: Bill Stephan To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 9:47 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts Thanks Bob and Lenny. Bill, that is what I did. I taped a piece of string on the outside of the belt. Then by turning by hand I brought it around and cut the string where it would mate. I measured the string for the correct length. - Original Message - From: "Bill Stephan" To: Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 9:47 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts Thanks Bob and Lenny. Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
Hey Lenny: I highly recommend the link twist belts. I have replaced the belts on my equipment with them. The drill press was one of the first. The 2 tools I noticed the most improvement was the drill press and my band saw. Just measure all your belts for length. Add up the total feet. Buy enough packages of the link twist belt material. Construct new belts with the proper number of links to make the same size belts. The link twist belts are not cut to size. One adds or removes links as needed. The links are small enough you never have to worry about having a belt too large or too small. In fact, you might have to remove a link or 2 after your belt gets worked in. I always like going on a Grizzly pilgrimage. I wish I could join you. I remember when I got my table saw, planer and jointer. It was a once in a lifetime deal. It was like mega Christmas. There was just under 1 ton of stuff in a 1/2 ton truck. Anyway, hope you get to head that way tomorrow. Better buy that Wife a nice dinner or something. :) Terry On Fri, 16 Oct 2009 18:09:40 -0400you write: >Hopefully tomorrow I will be making a trip to Grizzly. I'd have a look at the drillpress table from wood pecker. Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
What I am afraid of is that when I put the links together to make the correct size when pulled tight they may become a little too long. and if I then remove a link it will be too short. That is why I want to go to the showroom to make sure it will work. I just might take one of the old ones along. With the forecast of more snow not sure if Karen will make the trip. With all of the leaves on the trees and some snow they are predicting downed power lines and trees. Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
Bill, these belts are made to replace any v-belt. They come in two sizes that I know about. My table saw has a 1/2 inch wide and the drill press has a width of 3/8. The 3/8 comes in a length of 5 feet. The 1/2 came in a 4 foot length. I don't remember where I purchased the one for the table saw. It was somewhere on-line. They are a little expensive but in my opinion worth every penny. - Original Message - From: To: Sent: Friday, October 16, 2009 6:44 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts Lenny: are these belts specific to Grizzly or can they be used on other brands of tools, say Delta drill presses. Re: [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
Lenny, if you get the table I got, you may want to make some changes before you use it. The round nuts are fastened to the bottom with small screws and will pull out of the wood, easily. I changed mine so the nuts are on top and pull against the top of the table and the clamps hold much better. earlier, Lenny McHugh, wrote: >Hopefully tomorrow I will be making a trip to Grizzly. [BlindHandyMan] power twist link belts
Hopefully tomorrow I will be making a trip to Grizzly. Been trying to get there for a few weeks. One of the items on my list is a 3/8 inch power twist link belt for my drill press. Has anyone converted the drill press to use these belts. My only concern is to get the belts to the correct length. My grizzly 7943 press uses two belts. When I upgraded the belt on my table saw the difference was almost unbelievable. All vibration went away, you can stand a nickel on edge while the machine is running. If we can get there I also plan to purchase the table for the drill press. I could not make one for what Grizzly is selling it for. Not sure how long I will be there it is a major (candy) store with over 12,000 tools on display. --- Please visit my home page; it is motivational, inspirational and humorous with many resources for the blind. http://www.lennymchugh.com Lenny Please Copy and Paste into New Message to pass along.
