I liked this one the most of the original designs.

However, I now prefer Tobias' version at http://www.funkreich.de/catalyst/.

One suggestion, I suggest incorporating a list of recent blogs/news as
in Simon's design. To me, that indicates the "freshness", for lack of
a better word, of the project and its community.

And to everyone, keep up the good work!

I put my vote to this new design!

of all of the proposals + this one, I like yours the best. just to reiterate
what others have
suggested:

1) catalyst logo is bit of small
2) color for the big banner clashes with the logo
3) the 'download now' is not very useful. people who use catalyst already know
where to get it.
and people who don't know about it need to read the beginner guide or other
docs to get started.
so download catalyst is not the first thing either audience do.

cheers,

James.

Just one idea - how about using some CSS framework? This way we can
get some nice colour and layout with minimal effort. There is a
discussion at http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=218597 about CSS
frameworks.

Oh!

Tobias, to make your design more striking! can you try to switch the
color on the banner where it says "Turbo Charge your Perl Web
devlopment!"

Make the backgroung White and the Logo and fonts in red ... or at
least the logo in red and the font in anything that goes with it !

I believe this may make the design more striking ...which what i hope
the new site aims for!

Okay.
I still vote #1 and I still think it would be really nice with the
suggestion I've made. Buuut, this new candidate can be a good one.

Let's go:
1) I suggest you start develop the HTML/DHTML code instead of drawing
it. It's easier, cleaner, more beautiful and we finally can see how it
will be.
2) The Catalyst logo is to small, it needs to be impressive, needs
to be memorized by the visitor, it's beautiful, so show it!
3) The red/orange banner is too big, there is no needs, you are giving
attraction to it instead of the logo or something that attracts to
Catalyst.
4) There is NOTHING in the top. Waste of space.
5) The bottom will be really fine, will see when you start to generate
HTML code.

That's all folks,

Hi Tobias ...

I can add to you few comments and suggestion.

Can you emphasize more the Catalyst logo .. I find it still kinda small
Look at
http://grails.org/
the Grails logo is like huge and its the first thing that catches your
eye when you open the Grails site

In general I have few more comment, I think one of the most important
objective for the new grails site is that it beez Catalyst powered. So
the new desing should have a powered by catalyst button ... I know the
new wiki will be ...

One more thing I like about the grails site is that the design is
really different! At least to me its like nothing i've seen before ...
i will never confuse the grails site for another one

So I think the new Catalyst site should aim for that too, to be really
different ... for example Tobias site uses a very common and
seen-before button for the download link, feels cheap to me (no
offense) , so I guess we should work more on this too

Re: [Catalyst] Catalyst site design drafts feedback thread

2008-06-16 Thread Jay K

Overall I have the same criticism for all of the designs. None of
them really pass the first glance test.

Designs:

(1) http://www.browsing.co.uk/cat

The contrast is overwhelming. Everything has a similar level of
contrast and thus importance, and there is no real indication of where
the user should go. My eyes just wander around this page searching
desperately for something to land on, and I always land on the
cupcake. While I like cupcakes, I always wind up wanting to leave the
computer and forage for cupcakes in the cupboard. Which is not what
we want people doing when they visit the site to learn about catalyst.

(2) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/cat_mock_web_001.png

A bit better, though I'm not fond of the color scheme. My eyes land
on the crop circle, which at least gives me an imprint of the cat
logo. That said, the navigational links don't call attention to
themselves, so I wind up relying on web navigation habit - rolling
around the page with my eyes to find something that looks like a
list. Also - there is too much text on the main page, which makes
me want to find another page that is friendlier and doesn't present me
with text overload right away.

(3) http://ion0.com/hx/cat/new-version-2-26.jpg

I like the header and navigational links here - because the contrast
calls attention to them - but the dark area at the top of the content
box is a bit too deep imho and makes the page feel weird / top heavy
to me. Without text content it's hard to judge this layout the same
way as the others.

(4) http://ion0.com/hx/cat/catalystSiteDesign3.jpg

Of the two from Scott, I prefer 3.

(5) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/catsite-Penfold.pdf

This design pops more, there is no trouble finding the nav links. The
font and color scheme, though, make it somewhat hard to look at for an
extended period of time. A slightly more subdued header color I think
would make me like this one more. The text is bigger, that's good,
there is still too much of it for a landing page. I like the layout
for a content page, though.

6) http://www.funkreich.de/catalystorg.png

Overall, my current favorite. Definitely in terms of spacing. I'm
not fond of the orange, and I don't know that the 'download' link
really makes sense. (Maybe replace with a 'learn more?')

What I like about this design, though, is that it's absolutely clear
what you are here for. The nav links are separated from the rest of
the site design enough to make them prominent. The fonts are good and
the text is not overwhelming. My only real criticism aside from the
orange is that it'd be nice to have some clear 'getting started' /
'more about catalyst' type links in a prominent position. The links
at the bottom are too hidden. In my browsers default size, they are
just barely above the fold and I registered them in the same way as I
do the copyright notice on most sites... in other words not at all.
Definitely want to get the three main links - 'Get Started', 'Get
Help', 'Get Involved' up into the white area and made more prominent.

So there's my two cents. Hope it helps,

Jay

I'm expecting the final drafts to be HTML.

I'm also expecting the designers already know they'll translate fine. That's
their area of expertise and I'm happy to leave it to them, since what the
final voting will be on will be HTML anyway.

I like this one the best. The major gray/red choice is good, but I think
that a different choice of secondary colors and some selection of
styling elements to integrate into the rest of the page would help. I
don't like these two greens with the red and gray. Not sure about the
amount of red text either--might be better with just red headings?
Carrying over some red is good, though. Muffin and salt and pepper
shaker image seems a little off. Doesn't immediately connect to the
"choices" theme, and isn't particularly punchy.

Big no to colors here too... I don't think the feeling of having a
framed section in the middle would carry over to a working site well.

(5) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/catsite-Penfold.pdf

My second choice of the new designs from a visual standpoint. I think it
might be hard to get all the information into this format on a working
site, though.

Since somebody proposed that the current page isn't that bad...
http://www.catalystframework.org/

Too pale, not dramatic or powerful enough, but shares the three-column
layout that I think works well. Doesn't scale to large fonts as well as
Simon's design (which scales up nicely). But the only new design I like
better is Simon's.

Like a few other people have mentioned it's very important to me that I
can increase the font size. My laptop monitor is too high resolution to
work well with most sites (and my eyes) and I'm constantly hitting ctrl-+.

I like this one best so far: http://catalyst.perl.org/

The submissions represent good work, and show potential. I prefer the
original site because:
- Best use of color
- Use of fonts and layout keeps the eye from "getting lost" in the
first second or so of viewing
- Best navigation structure, especially over the leading contender
http://www.browsing.co.uk/cat/,
which I think will leave many people lost with the nav crammed into
the upper corner where it
might be easily overlooked for the bigger, more obvious content
links below. Also, the nav
is too small and vague, and could leave the initial visitor unsure
what content the site offers

To add a little to themes that others have brought up; basically some
things to consider in the design.

I have old eyes too, and strong lenses, so I'm all for good size clear
fonts. It's also easier to read dark writing on a light background.
Sites with important content in light writing on a dark background put
me off, especially in fonts with thin, elegant strokes.

I never have my browser window the full width of my screen. I want to be
able to make use of whatever I'm seeing in the browser in some other
window at the same time. So I get very annoyed by sites that are
gratuitously wide and don't gracefully reshape if I change my browser width.

I also get annoyed by sites that don't cope well if I increase the font
size. Either bits of 'text' that don't change size (e.g. flash or
images), or text that overlaps images or other text, or that forces the
window wider.

Finally, I quite often browse with Javascript off, so menus or search
boxes that don't provide HTML fallback are irritating.

The color scheme works well, I'm particularly fond of the red and grey
combination, and I'd get rid of the colourful lines above the content
columns. I dislike the ingredients image with the black border,
although it looks cute now, it'll quickly fade into dullness after
looking at it on the course of the next few years, which is why I
think it should be a logo-related image like (2).

> (2) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/cat_mock_web_001.png

The major pro for this is the crop circle image which stands out quite
nicely. Inspite of liking the greenish tones, I'd like the color
theming to be redish to match the logo. The content regions would look
better if they were seamless. The white "catalyst" name over light
green looks pretty dull and the gradient button-like toolbar options
are hard to read.

> (3) http://ion0.com/hx/cat/new-version-2-26.jpg

Too much blur and the main content box puts most of the screen to
waste. I've never liked toolbar options on bold fonts, it's too
aggressive.

> (4) http://ion0.com/hx/cat/catalystSiteDesign3.jpg

Same as (3), and the color theme doesn't work.

> (5) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/catsite-Penfold.pdf

The simplistic take works well, although I don't see a reason for the
bordered gradient on the left panel or the grey background on the
right. Bold font option list annoys me, so do the dot list separators.
Version number should be omitted on the download link.

This one looks the most professional, but the Catalyst logo is not big
enough, and it have no spirit. I prefer site that look radically
different.

Catalyst's spirit is free-form art, the Catalyst slogan is that the
framework impose little rools and you get to pick your own weapons and
tools.

You know how sometimes people target symmetry to achieve beauty.

You know how some do the opposite, break symmetry to achieve beauty,
because you know its art. This is where I find Perl's spirit, and this
is where I think Catalyst's spirit is.

This site isn't that at all... but its pretty and professional and clean.

This is kind of a restyling of the current web site. It's OK, but with
all that information is maybe a bit scary for the newcomer compared to
others. And it has nothing really new compared to current, anyhow.

> (2) http://agaton.scsys.co.uk/~matthewt/catsite/cat_mock_web_001.png

This is *my favourite*: the crop circles are a great eye-catcher and will
attract users. I however think the "ocra yellow" background color needs
to be changed with something else, as it's a bit "heavy" and it also
clashes with the read of the Catalyst logo.

This is simple enough, with big writings, which is a plus. It's however
not eye-catching enough, and doesn't provide any nice image besides the
logo.

I think the person who discussed movabletyp.org's footer has a point
there. I like the larger footer to an extent.

My overall impression: a design that scales well to widescreen flat
panel monitors (like 24-inchers), easy-to-see links and a font size of
at least 14 points get my vote. You know it would be nice to bring up a
site on a widescreen monitor and be able to read it at a distance
without having to move my eyes to the 1-inch-from-the-flat-panel mark.

The crop circle is great. The colors, particularly in the tabs up top,
make the text hard to read (not enough contrast). Also, all the fonts seem
way too small, but maybe that's because this is a screenshot, and it might
