Re: [cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged hawks migrating now
In addition to the migrating hawks (ended up w only 28 BROAD-WINGS and 2 OSPREYS during the brief clear period), migrant warblers seemed to be everywhere today. Checking chickadee flocks in my yard, in the woods between Arrowwood Lane and Tareyton Park, and on E King Rd, I saw multiple BLACKPOLL, BAY-BREASTED, MAGNOLIA, NASHVILLE, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACK THROATED GREEN, COM YELLOWTHROAT, and single CHESTNUT SIDED, REDSTART, TENNESSEE, WILSONS, and HOODED. [cayugabirds-l] Olive-sided Flycatcher on South Hill RecWay
I took a stroll on the South Hill Recreationway from 6-7 PM. Pretty cool and quiet but...I saw an Olive-sided Flycatcher perched in the open on a snag below the trail behind the Northview drive backyards. The bird was showing the white rump patches of a juvenile. This was a first for me in my local patch. [cayugabirds-l] Yard birds
Hi all, Today I worked with Ngampit in the garden a whole lot. Early morning, we had a Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak "chinking" away and a Blackpoll warbler, along with a group of Cedar waxwings which have spent most of the morning eating Yew berries (so hopefully they are cured of any cancer). Also an Eastern Wood Peewee had been calling incessantly whole day from one of my Norway Spruces! In between we went to farmer's Market for some lunch, where I saw an Osprey flying overhead and a Northern Mockingbird in the area. When the weather cleared I forgot to look up in the sky for the hawks as we were so engrossed with trimming plants and did not even check e-mails whole day until recently so missed any Broad-winged hawks that were flying overhead! [cayugabirds-l] Larch Meadows
Randomly decided to walk the Larch Meadows trail at Buttermilk Falls, a pleasant trail except for the persistent noise from Route 13. Ran into a nice mixed flock including Nashville, BTGreen, BTBlue, Chestnut-sided, Black-and-white, and possible Parula. Pewees were active and feeding young. Later added a Bay-breasted (I think), nice close Philadelphia Vireo, and young Redstart. As I sit here by the ball field staring at the sky (no broadwings) as I type, a raven just flew over.
