According to DTS: a Chevy 8.2 has a 25-spline shaft a Buick/Olds/Pontiac 8.2 has a 27-spline shaft and a Chevy 8.5 has a 30-spline shaft. Hope that helps. I think I am going to look at a couple myself to see. - James __ Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! HotJobs http://hotjobs.sweepstakes.yahoo.com/careermakeover
RE: [Chevelle-list] 10 bolt rear - determining 8.2 vs 8.5
It looks like the easiest way to distinguish between an 8.2 and 8.5 is by the pinion nut. [Chevelle-List] 10 Bolt Rear
Everyone, My 72 El Camino has a 10 bolt open rear end in it. Does nayone know if Chevy used only 8.5" gears that year or could it have 8.2" gears in it? If they used both then I'm have to crawl under it and ck it out. Reason I asked I'm trying to find out how much$ it will cost to convert it to Posi put 3.55 or 3.73 gears in it. Re: [Chevelle-List] 10 Bolt Rear
Hi Dwight, i own a 72 chevelle and the rearend in it came from a 71 Elcamino, and it is the 8.2, it had stock 273 gear ratio but i pulled them out and purchased a 3 series carrier and put back the original ratio of 3.36 cost me about 1000.00 in total forgot to mention i also put a posi unit in as well but that was the cost. Just throwing figures out for an idea. KenD 72 HeavyChevyChevelle
