Re: [Chevelle-List] Checking plug wires
plug wires: use a test light hooked to a good ground, run probe end around the boots and up the entire wire, if wire is "bad" [leaking] you will see a spark snap at the test light probe every time that cylinder fires.. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Yes, I check my plug wires that way all the time. If they all check out OK (low resistance), the insulation is in good shape, and there's no arcing/leakage (observed with the engine running after dark) I consider them good to go. Resistance will increase with wire length so the long ones will read slightly higher than the short ones. You can also check spark plugs this way. It's not so much the actual resistance observed but the uniformity of the readings. Of course, if a person was unlucky enough to get 8 bad plugs... ;^) Brad > I have been told that you can check plug wires by taking an Ohms reading on > them. Is this true? If you get the pi** shocked out of you, then the wires are bad. :-))) Another cheap way is to watch the engine bay in the pitch dark. If you see sparks on/thru/around the wires, they are bad. :-)) Happy troubleshooting! Keith Cooper wrote: I have been told that you can check plug wires by taking an Ohms reading on them. [Chevelle-List] Checking Plug Wires
I had a set of Mallory wires on my car and called the factory to inquire on how to check if they are still good. I was told to check the resistance with an ohm meter. Those wires were supposed to be 100 ohms per foot. You have to check with your factory for the spec. Larry W 65 SS
