RE: Exterior Routing Scalability [7:59544]
DNS based routing versus IPADD routing... this is interesting. "you are gonna have to give me some grace on this as it has been a while .. but " Since we know that currently DNS resolution is already employed globaly (to make things easier for the world community) and that rides on top of the IPADD routing that supports the routing structures (EBGP) then are we really talking about realigning and modifying the OSI model altogether? this reminds me of a question I use to ask engineers when I would be interviewing them for a job... one topic I would cover is the "Well known port numbers" i.e. ftp, snmp, dns, dhcp, pop3, etc.. so they would get on a roll and feel good that they were nailing these answers. then I would throw them off by asking: "What is the well known port number for Frame Relay?" Obviously this was a trick question just to catch them off guard and to see how well they knew the OSI model. More often than not they would get frustrated and be convinced that F/R does have a port number. But what if the layer 2 technologies did have port numbers? what would be next? to get back to the topic.. i would not want to contemplate the tought of the impact it would have globaly on the networking foundation of companies and the internet altogether if it were traveresed to a DNS based routing technique; it would be too much to imagine. (it would put a lot of people out of work. ;) two last questions: 1. MPLS vs. BGPv4? 2. what is the lowest cisco routing platform you would suggest for a dual homed bgp network? Cheers! (i know what i will and won't suggest to customers irregardless of what anyone says, but just curious what your viepoint is, for example some people setup a 2651 to perform this task - yeah o.k. - better get ready to use that thing for a doorstop!!) "at equal rate"; as Socrates would put it. Aristotle as opposed to Socrates... my bad.. knew something was off about that.. RE: CCIE Vs. BS or MS dergree [7:59481]
Four to six years ago I would have highly agreed with your friend in saying that the CCIE is much more difficult to obtain than most if not all degrees. However, with the developments over the recent years and popularity of the CCIE it has been commoditized. This cert use to be of a nature that represented a greater value and higher standard for those of us in this industry. I am not speaking for everyone. I have not ran across a CCIE (with the exception of a very few) in the past three to four years that could hold their ground "at equal rate"; as Socrates would put it. I can only imagine the extent of backlash of comments from people on this list. I encourage all those who wish to pursue the CCIE whether it be for their own personal reasons or for the monetary value. There is a great deal of credibility to obtaining a CCIE cert but it has become much easier to obtain in recent years. If I have offended anyone for my comments I wish to extend my apologies now as it was not my intent to do so. RE: VPN within intranet? [7:59284]
yes.. given you have the proper routing in place, security policies to support it, and your IPSEC configs to allow it. RE: Problem Regarding DLCI [7:59282]
Always ... Always get your DLCI numbers from the carrier/provider. I have never seen any WAN where the customer did not have them regardless of the setup technique. RE: dialer remote name/ppp chap hostname [7:59224]
You could try another approach on this as opposed to performing authentication commands on the individual interfaces. set up AAA authentication globaly on the routers this prevents intensive interface configuration allows you to focus purely on the authentication problem you can establish radius, tacacs+, or local authentication which is what you are trying to do. there are several debug commands you may try at the head end. something like: debug ppp authentication chap sorry it's been a while...
