Real world I had to deal with this to add 'legacy' Motorola equipment attached to a larger Cisco network. The business unit never bought the OSPF license for the Motorolas. hmm, don't know the whole story, but once you redistribute ospf into rip and you mess up filtering on the interface, wouldn't that allow you to see the redistributed routes on the router connecting to that interface ? It's just another way to see whether what you implemented actually does work...
