I’m just trying to sell a few extra sails and don’t want to get into a war on 
sail design or what’s right for someone’s boat.  But for the record, In my area 
Phrf is only concerned with the spin’s total sail area, not luff length.   
Check with your local rating representative if you have concerns.

Regarding luff,   Assuming you tack the thing to the fore peak like I do, the 
head of the spin is hoisted above the Genoa.  That could add a foot.  Second, 
you want a curve in the luff of the spin so it will fly to weather of the 
forestry as you run.  It’s easy and stable this way and I cruise and race with 
it, but this also will add luff length greater than a Genoa.

Genoas have a tight luff because they are upwind sails.   Asym are downwind 
sails.

I hope that helps.   It’s a good sail and I did well with it.  I just don’t 
need it anymore.

For the jib, whether you can furl it depends if your hoist height is greater 
than the luff length I listed.   You’ll note the leech is shorter than the 
luff, so that indicates it shouldn’t bunch up on the foot .  It does not have 
foam luff.

Only One spin and the jib are still available if anyone wants them.  Let me

The middle length of a symmetrical spin, and the luff of an a-sail, are 
nominally 95% of the length of the headstay of a boat. For our 38-2s with a 
52’1” headstay, that would be about 49’6”. Longer gets a penalty under PHRF. If 
you’re a cruiser, it just makes the sail a bit harder to handle and trim.



The luff of a regular headsail can vary depending on how the sail is used. If 
it is going into a luff tape (not a roller furler) it can be only a few inches 
shorter than the headstay length (so about 52’ for our boats). If the sail is 
going onto a roller, you must shorten the luff to allow for the furling drum at 
the bottom and the roller bearing at the top. For my installation that 
translates to something between 2’6” and 3’ – so the luff of my newest headsail 
was about 49’.



If my old and unreliable memory serves, Pete has a 37 (the early 80’s version) 
or a 38LF. I’d guess the a sails are oversize sails for cruising.

#3 backup sail for my 38. Is it set up for roller furling, or perhaps for 
roller reefing with a foam or rope luff?

Stus-List Winter Charter Recommendation?

Hi all,
I am looking for a recommendation for a bare boat charter some place warm
this winter. We are in Oregon, so we would prefer a west coast spot if
possible. It would be my young family and a friend's young family, i.e.
four kids under 5 years old.
I prefer a mono hull in the 45 foot range. A catamaran could work too I
suppose.
Any thoughts? A direct flight from Portland or Seattle to our destination
is our preferred option.

Yes.  Touche' had the same situation in Pensacola.  Floating pier, shared
slip, no piling between the boats.  I used two "hole through the middle"
fenders hung vertically.  No issues.

However, it brings up a possible discussion - whether to use fender covers
or not.  The Admiral didn't like the discoloration on Touche's white
fenders so she bought black mesh fenders covers.

Well, mesh fender covers are OK.  They reduce the squeaking when boats are
rafted together.  However, when docked on a pier where contact with marine
growth, barnacles, etc., is possible, they present the potential for
scratching the topsides.  Any particles of crushed crustaceans, etc. can
become trapped in the mesh.  When the fender spins, and it will, the debris
will scratch the boat.

With the boat freshly painted, our answer is to purchase black fenders and
not use fender covers.  We never raft up so that will work.

A gorgeous red Dennis. I recently had a non serious talk with my boatyard
owner about painting Briar Patch red. But one of my concerns is the
potential scuffing caused by a sole fender. The floating docks in my marina
do not provide the ability to hold the boat away from the finger pier. If
there is any west in the wind, the boat is up against the fender. Has
anyone experienced this?

When you pull the dipstip, put a single full drop on a paper towel or clean
white rag.  If that drop developers a halo then you may have a diesel in
your oil.  In the states off-road diesel is dyed red - in that case look
for the halo to be red-ish.

Smell the rag.  Burnt smell is bad, diesel fuel smell is bad.

Look at the rag in the sun.  Glittery is bad.  Chunks are bad.  White or
chocolate milkshake needs further monitoring.  It could be a coolant leak.
Look for lowering coolant level and increasing oil level.  If neither is
occurring then it could just be a small amount of condensation.  In that
case, it's not something wrong with the engine. You just need to run the
engine up to temp more often and for longer periods, or install a block
heater.

Once all the oil is absorbed into the rag, is there anything left on the
surface?  Black is likely products of combustion.  Grey could be lead from
the babbitt on the bearings.

Take an additional single drop between two fingers.  It is unlikely that
you will feel anything other than slippery oil, but if you do then you have
problems.

Check the dipstick.  In the area above the level of the oil.  Assuming it
isn't stainless - Is there rust?  This would again show signs of moisture
in the crankcase.

Must of the time you're not going to find anything out of the norm... But
if you don't look or know what to look for then you won't see it when it
happens.

There is also guidance in the manual for some of our engines which
addresses the angle at which they are mounted.  For this reason the high
and low mark on the dipstick may not be accurate to your installation.
Adjust as necessary.

Agree it pays to check oil level regularly.  Another cause for oil increasing 
is mechanical fuel pump diaphragm leaking diesel into the oil. (Got the t 
shirt)  apparently is not an uncommon issue with Yanmars

Here is a very simple way to prevent early engine death – Check the oil 
frequently and especially after the boat sits. If the level starts going UP do 
not start the engine! There is water in the sump lifting the oil. I had a ski 
boat that would gain a few quarts of water sitting for a week and we put a pan 
under the engine and drained the water out before we started it. Running it 
makes an oatmeal mush that does not really lubricate and wrecks the engine.

Have used the 2 liter version of this many years on our Yanmar 3GM.  Works 
fine.  Best if oil is worm.  Biggest issue is getting tube to aft corner of pan 
so get out all the oil as engine is tilted aft.
