Re: Stus-List solar vent wiggles, doesn't rotate
There are three screws holding the solar panel to the rest of the unit. It may take a bit of gentle persuasion to dismantle the panel/o-ring assembly because it's gooped in place with what appears to be silicone grease. This is a 6-year-old unit that I have, but I doubt they have changed it that much. You *have* to be able to change out the battery... I found out about it on one of the cruisers forums, the guy reported excellent results. It's a lot cheaper than a new vent. I just received mine along with a special Eneloop battery I found on Amazon. I JUST bought a new Marinco 4 day/night solar vent and it doesn't work?? I took it apart and found the motor and battery completely sealed...unable to service, troubleshoot, etc. Hope the retailer makes it easy to swap:) Harry Sent from my iPhone On Jul 14, 2015, at 14:19, Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote: Hi Nate, Sounds to me like one of the commutators in the motor is no longer getting current and that creates a dead spot. Re: Stus-List solar vent wiggles, doesn't rotate
That wriggle back and forth sounds like low voltage or a failed sector in the motor winding. Along with battery charging issues the low voltage could be caused by corroded connections or wires. It could also be extra load on the motor from friction but if it goes back and forth I lean towards voltage/winding issues. The company I work for does a significant amount of environmental testing on wire wound assemblies often made with very fine wire. Any chlorides (salt) present when the windings are exposed to water accelerates corrosion significantly. I am often surprised on how far the corrosion damage will work/wick into a coated or encapsulated assembly and not be visible even under 20X magnification. Re: Stus-List solar vent wiggles, doesn't rotate
Nate, I have one that is over 20 years old. Runs like a top every day. I don’t know how, but it just keeps going like the energizer bunny. It sounds like your battery may not be charging. Try checking the voltage on the battery. If it’s not, the solar cell may not be functional anymore. I haven’t heard of anyone repairing these, but maybe someone will have some other ideas.
