Re: WIKI is in read-only mode?

2013-03-17 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff

Hi Radek and everybody,

But one day your GTA02 will stop working - it might fall on the floor or
whatever. GTA04 is only replacement - that's why it's important to support
GTA04 - either by donation or buying the device.

how it connected with the subject?

This is not a reason to move the wiki or close it. This is an open
source project, the marketing stereotypes (that the new generation
hardware is the better replacement for old one) just not applicable.
Just because that targeted to stimulate consumer market for sales, but
not to give ability to people to create whatever they want.

The potential of the hardware is not equal to the formal functionality
of device. I plan to use the GTA02 as a core for robotic system, for
example. Someone else maybe create something else with it (whatever it
could be). It's logical to keep all data in one well know habitual
knowledge base. And it's logical to keep it open for new supplements.

Maybe i am wrong but openmoko as company is for years dead and nobody of the
old admins is willing to spend much time on maintaining the infrastructure. I
guess the number of spammers is now 1000x higher the number of contributors,
that's why it's readonly. And it's no wonder that GTA04 has separate wiki
because of these reasons.

I'm as a user of wiki just don't care whether it contains some spam or
not. I have a will to clean it if I found it, or doesn't if I'm lazy (or
whatever). This is totally not a point.

Honestly I don't understand the reason to close the access for users
(who are main audience of the recourse) just to avoid the spam. It's
ridiculous.

WIKI is in read-only mode?

2013-03-15 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff

Hi list,

I just found that I'm not able to write to wiki today. And I see that
some time ago there was discussion regarding of possibility to switch it
to read-only mode or even move somewhere else.

IMHO this is a wrong idea. Wiki is an open platform by its nature. So
the volume of spam -- is just a result of that

1. visitors don't clean the spam when they found it
2. there is no capcha or any relevant mechanism to prevent robo-spam
posting

And another theme I was alerted by: this is a splitting of wiki for
GTA02 and GTA04. I honestly don't really like that idea not even because
I still use GTA02 and have no plans to reject it just because more
powerful device is on the market, but also because a I'm not really love
idea of "buying new gadget just because it has more powerful processor".
I love idea of keeping old hardware living for maximum long time, for
reusing it and for improvement of functionality in the frames of given
power. And I believe that a lot of people support my point of view.

So, please don't archive old wiki and don't make it read-only. This is
wrong way IMHO.

And the main question. How to get access to the wiki eventually?

thank you in advance,
Dmitry

generally not bad. after 3 years of using original one (and when it

Note that this battery have other protection module and not able to

However, the other idea is to purchase some more-less similar (by

2012-12-23 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff

BTW, the bass rework looks very similar to what i was doing, i wonder
who did that :) too bad it looks like i didn't warn everyone strong
enough (though i did put a big fat warning on the rework page) when i
discovered the shield must be additionally insulated after the rework,
i apologise for that :/

heh, that thing flicked in my head when I solder capacitors, but I just
give it up and limit the protection with tiny piece of sticky tape.
Which is obviously was not enough :)

Can you share the technique you used to desolder it?

with hot air soldering station. but actually I fount that temperature is
not enough (and I was a bit afraid to overheat PCF50633). So eventually
I pick it out with the pincer helping myself with classic soldering iron.

this is result of procedure
http://www.shalnoff.com/pics/freerunner_desoldered_inductor.JPG

Taking a closer look at the schematics and the PCF50633 datasheet i
see that this inductor is part of the main step-up/step-down auto
converter with an output current as big as 1.1A. It works at 1.7MHz
frequency (the irc log i found appears to be unrelated). As far as i
can tell that's unrelated to the self-resonance frequency of the
inductor (that's always much higher for the modern parts). I'd get the
one with>1.1A rated current, and on 1.7MHz all of those having
self-resonant frequency of 50MHz should work decently. I do not
understand much in EE though so probably you'll want some quick advice
from those who really knows inductive step-up/down converters.

aha... everything is clear. I'll try one and report the result.

I never removed LCD too, and everything was fine. It's shielded from
the heat by the PCB itself, and i doubt you could have heated it up
too much.

it gives the hope :) will see.

GTA02 power death

2012-12-22 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff

Hi everybody,

The situation:

I've use for a couple of month this battery
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Battery-Cell-Fit-RoHS-Garmin-GPS-Mobile-10-GPS-Mobile-10x-GPS10-/300575864789?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item45fbb7b7d5

yesterday my device accidently start switching off (after night
recharging) and make some strange buzzing on power on without any
visible activity (screen was kept black). So I decide that is a known
"complete battery drain" problem and try to animate the device with
external power.

However, after several attempts I've got it booted. The screen picture
was surprisingly inverted (!) but after sleep and awaking procedure it
gets normal.

After that, I've got idea to measure the battery voltage and found that
it is 4.1 v (instead normal 3.7). Eventually I deside to leave it as is
and try to find the cause at morning. I switch it off and go to sleep.

Today I repeat operation with all similar symptomes (noise on power on
without any other reactions) but without any success. Contrariwise,
after several iterations of unsuccessful tries, when I power it on with
battery and original USB adapter, it suddenly turned on for the second,
then screen start gets brigther and finally I feel sweet smell of
burning isolation :) I immediately remove all power sources, disassemble
the device and found that I've burned some tiny IC near the PCF50633HN.

The question:

I digg all internets regarding the PCB layout but can't find anything
relevant (there is no PCB layout on the wiki?). I suppose that was
RT9013 (at least that only component in this schematic block that has
similar package) but I'm not sure. Could anybody help me to identify
this component?

here is HiRes picture of the patient
http://www.shalnoff.com/pics/freerunner_pcb.JPG
You easily find it by burning fume around it :)

except of that would be intereting to get some hints what the real
reason cause this situation. And why LiPo battery can start to show
4.1v? I suppose that has some connection to the charging procedure (I
use QTmoko without the non-original battery patch).

Thank you for any hints in advance!
Plan to purchase and resolder it.

battery with replaced protection circuit module

2012-08-30 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff

Hi colleagues,

I've got the idea to get the circuit form my old GTA2 battery and solder
it on the new LiPo (non original) battery to get back full functionality.

I've learned the circuit scheme and data-sheet
http://people.openmoko.org/tony_tu/GTA02/hardware/GTA02/CT-GTA02.pdf
and found that there are no special requirements concerning the battery
itself. S8211CAB-I6T1G data-sheet has nothing like this too.

The questions are:
1. is it possible theoretically replace body of the battery and resolder
the old protection board on it?

2. is anybody had this sort of experience ever?

thank you in advance for any hints.

But, is there any method to switch charging indicator off? and, maybe,

As I know, the power control daemon turns charging and discharging on

Is there a gpsd running on the FR?

Hi,
the postinst rule has wrong directory (Applications instead of games). You can
solve this easily by installing some other game and it should appear.

Or you can do this command from terminal:

qcop QPE/DocAPI 'scanPath(QString,int)' /opt/qtmoko/apps/Games/ 1

or you can reinstall fixed version (working on it now, it should be there
soon).

general SD card read/write problem

2011-06-02 Thread Dmitry Shalnoff
Hello Everybody,

I have a periodically appeared problem with SD card writing/reading
functionality. I has several cards to try and found some correlation with size
and speed type of the card. '

Problems are appers when I'm trying to write intensively on the card. Usually
on the next boot I found filesystem corrupted and cant' mount card anymore till
I fsck it (with predictable files damage) or reformat.

generally it's looks like 16GB cards almost 100% cases have problems.
and as I suppose 4 class cards more prone to problem than class 6.

Question is simple: Is my suspicions are correct (concerning class and card
size)? what is general recommendations? Who has any good/bad experience with
different types of cards?

I know about this topic http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Supported_microSD_cards ,
but it's doesn't looks like relevant tutorial to buy fail-safe SD and obviously
this problem doesn't rely on brand name too.

thank you beforehand for any help,

Well, I'm plagued by the same issue. Here where I live, all connectors are
Ø3.5mm while the FreeRunner has Ø2.5mm.
I talked with Nikolaus about this topic already, and it's not that easy.
The board wouldn't fit into the case anymore,

that understandable reason, but ... I see simple compromise, which is,
to my mind, quite suitable for device audience and relevant to the
spirit of the project... this is not a big difference with 2.5 and 3.5
socket pads. why not make just a bit wider pads under the socket to give
a possibility to solder other jack for the people who would like to do
that and ready to drill case hole to make it wider.

If I don't mistake ther is enough space over the socket in the case and
even if not, the case easly can be modified by little filing.

at least (even if it stay in current status), what would be good to take
into account this is the order of pins in the socket. Current GTA02 jack
have non standard punout where is a 3 contacts jack just short one
channel and to get normal stereo you need to get 4 contact jack and 3
pins socket and resolder it by youself (that what I did, for example)

this adapter (which has similar order of contacts on the both sides)
didn't work
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-5mm-male-to-3-5mm-female-adapter-cable-white-14-5cm-23191

so you would have need for a new one too...
Good thing is, that we also are already planning the gta05, and there I'm
organizing an amazing, cool and totally innovative new chassis in addition.
Can't tell too much as long as the specs are not CC-License, but:
It's TOTALLY cool ;-D

Heh :) that's sounds promising. would you like to make it public on
early stage? it's open hardware project. let people to get involved.

Just one last think... it's about the case and screen size. I totally
like current form-factor and, as designer, I found it very interesting
and relevant to the idea of the project. I really like that hole and
that's difference from hundreds of other mass-market pocket bricks. But
the big minus of the current case that a limitation of the screen size.
Probably, would be great to focus on form-factor "flexibility" and
modularity of the hardware (as I suspect, you, probably, already
planning something in this way).

Ideally that could be really great to have a chance to repack all
hardware in selfmade case with _other_screen_ and other set of
peripheral devices. (is LCD have a standard interface?) It would gives
dramatically new abilities for individuals and small design companies to
create customised portable devices.

anyway, thank you guys that you continue the project. I reckon that it's
just a beginning of the big movement which eventually changes our
understanding of the market and design of things.
