[CGUYS] Internet Web Cam
OK to all you gadget gurus out there. My daughter is getting married this fall. My in-laws (Most of my wife's family actually) live in the northern reaches of Ontario and are showing a reluctance to traveling this far south. They wondered if I their techhy son-in-law could set up a laptop with a web cam and broadcast the wedding via the Internet so they could watch it live instead of being there. (My preference is them be there) I remember someone like Linksysy at one time had these and marketed them, but I do not know if they are still out there and I have no idea how well these work. To me it seems like a whole lot of work just to please some people who do not like to travel. (long history here) Anyone have any ideas? How much am I looking at to get this setup and make it work? The church has high speed Internet so that will not be a problem. Stewart Rev. Stewart A. I don't think you will find a web cam that will give you a decent wide angle shot in the lighting you are likely to have. They really are designed for more intimate purposes - web chats, etc., not live event feeds. Matthew On Jan 17, 2008, at 3:40 PM, Rev. Stewart Marshall wrote: OK to all you gadget gurus out there. Re: [CGUYS] Internet Web Cam
For better picture quality and light sensitivity, for the web cam you could substitute a digital or analog video camera, possibly a video capture card or other interface device and ICQ or Netmeeting etc but, it would still not be a full screen image and it would probably be realistically too complex for the average joe to set up on both ends. It would take some time to work out the wrinkles and would have to be done in advance or you would end up with nada... Probably wiser to stick with the best web cam you can get if you do it all all... A while back someone recommended one model as being particularly good but I can't remember the name of it... db Rev. That sounds almost like what I will need. I am aware of the limitations this will be an almost type of setup. There is no way with my limited budget etc. to be able to set up and broadcast a movie quality cam of the event. (No matter what they show in the movies) I plan on recording it and making a DVD of it, but they want to be able to watch it as it happens. This is a poor excuse for not being there honestly. thanks for the advice. Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
You mean that all of the sudden in Maryland there is now a 6% tax on computer consulting earnings? How, btw, is this even considered a sales tax? That is not how a sales tax works. You just add 6% at the bottom of the bill and collect it. From time to time you send the money over to the government. It only becomes a problem if you fail to collect it. Then you get to pay the tax, plus fines, with your own money. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? For better picture quality and light sensitivity, for the web cam you could substitute a digital or analog video camera, possibly a video capture card or other interface device and ICQ or Netmeeting etc Apple's iChat works with FireWire cameras. The best video cameras use FireWire so that would give you better results. it would still not be a full screen image and it would probably be realistically too complex for the average joe to set up on both ends. Apple's iChat supports 640 x 480, which is the maximum you can get out of a video camera. To get that you need a Mac with at least a 1.93 MHz Core Duo processor and a 900 kbps Internet connection. It automatically adjusts to the best your equipment will support. Apple's iChat works with AOL's free AIM system so that going to be easy on the setup on the other end of the line. It also does ICQ, etc. I suggest borrowing a Mac laptop to make the whole thing very easy. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Time Warner pay based on Data Usage?
Time Warner is floating a plan to pay for Internet based on usage in this Marketplace story: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/01/17/timewarner/ Text follows below. Richard P. Thursday, January 17, 2008 Time Warner Cable plans to test a system in which Internet subscribers would pay for the amount of data they download. That's not good news for anyone who likes watching movies and music videos online. Ashley Milne-Tyte reports. TEXT OF STORY TESS VIGELAND: Most of us get billed the same amount every month for our Internet connections, no matter how much or how little we surf the Web, but Time Warner Cable is looking into a new business model. The country's second biggest cable provider says it's planning to test a system where Internet subscribers pay for the amount of data they download. Not good news for anyone who likes watching movies and music videos online. Ashley Milne-Tyte reports. ASHLEY MILNE-TYTE: Time Warner Cable starts testing in Beaumont, Texas later this year. Company spokesman Alex Dudley blames a small number of bandwidth hogs. ALEX DUDLEY: Less than 5 percent of our users are at times using up to 50 percent of our network. Which means that they are negatively impacting on the experience for the rest of our customers. He says the trial will tier customers based on how many gigabytes of data they download each month. He says the company hasn't decided how much each group will pay, but Porter Bibb of Media Tech Capital Partners doesn't believe light Internet users will pay any less, and he says Time Warner will charge heavy users a premium. PORTER BIBB: And that's simply not going to fly. It's as nonsensical as saying if you have cable television and you don't watch much television you're going to pay less than someone who watches 24/7. Bibb says this is just a way for cable companies to get an early piece of the online video pie, but Declan McCullagh of CNET says Internet service providers need to try new pricing models, because all that video clogs their pipes. DECLAN McCULLAGH: It's very expensive to build new pipes, so what do you do? I think we're going to see experimentation. We're going to see some ISPs try to charge. We're going to see other ISPs, and Comcast is already doing this, trying to throttle. That is, slow down the speed of the connection for those who use a lot of bandwidth. He says U.S. consumers may have got used to all-in-one pricing for Internet use, but he says bandwidth could eventually be like any other utility, where the free market dictates how much we pay. In New York, I'm Ashley Milne-Tyte for Marketplace. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
So if a client is going to pay, say, $50 an hour, I need to add 6% onto that for this tax? Who does it actually cover? The term computer consultant seems pretty vague and broad. Wouldn't call what I'll be doing that, though maybe someone else would. http://www.opednews.com/articles/2/opedne_mark_cri_080116_what_to_expect_from_.htm Mark Crispin Miller's piece was posted recently about recounts in NH. You don't have to buy his thesis about the rigging of any particular election, but his point about the fact that the company programming the voting machines in NH also has a data mining business is rather important. Re: [CGUYS] Time Warner pay based on Data Usage?
Time Warner is floating a plan to pay for Internet based on usage in this Marketplace story: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/01/17/timewarner/ I heard it and am tempted to write to Marketplace about a very poorly researched story. The assertion that there is a shortage of capacity is false. One of the two experts she interviewed was actually just another reporter.
How could it be that the concept of a sales tax escapes you? Do you live in New Hampshire? You just put a line at the bottom of the invoice MD Sales Tax 6%. Is that so hard? Hairdressers have to charge the tax too. Taxes are the fee we pay for civilization. It is a bargain. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Internet Web Cam
Tom has more to do with unavailability. No one in my congregation has a Mac laptop (I have one member that has Mac's all desktop units) I don't know anyone with a Mac laptop so I have to make do with what I have. What I was thinking about doing though is to get a firewire card for my laptop and hook up the Firewire from my nice Panasonic Video recorder and using that as the cam. Not a religion, but facing reality! Stewart At 08:32 PM 1/17/2008, you wrote: Not going to happen, thanks for the advice though. Be glad yours is only 6 in TN we paid 9.75 on everything (including groceries) and here in Alabama we pay 9 on everything. Oh and in Alabama churches are not tax exempt! Re: [CGUYS] What to charge for contract to develop web content?
Okay, but when the state of MD has this set amount of $ to pay for this contract and we are talking about getting paid X dollars per hour for a certain period, don't think they are thinking they have pay this extra 6%. But first I'll have to verify if this type of service would even be covered. That would jack up the price for $50/hour fee to $53. Good point, why would the state tax the same state? Randall On 1/17/08, Rev.
