So I hear that there has been a lot of recent discussion about our status
change at gene...@incubator.apache.org, which I was unaware of. I was not
subscribed to that list, and had accepted Grant's assessment of our status
change. We'll have to see where it leads now.

Karl: sounds good. I'll commit this part shortly, but leave this issue open
until we are happy with CHANGES.txt

I'll look at the wiki page and see if theres anything that comes to mind, good
idea.

Robert,
I'd be more than happy to write the "upgrading" section, although technically
we have no releases yet.

Why don't you go ahead and commit, and I'll do the rest?

As far as JIRA process is concerned, I usually do request that bug finders
create their own tickets, short-circuiting this process only in the case of
truly nasty problems. ;-) I also try to discourage "Omnibus" tickets, because
those can't readily be dealt with by any straightforward process I am aware of.
I've been toying with writing up ticket guidelines in the "How to contribute"
wiki page for some time - if you have any thoughts about this, love to hear
them.

Karl, OK: i looked at Solr's CHANGES.txt for their first release, and indeed
there is a 'upgrading from previous versions' section (to guide users that were
using trunk copies before release or whatever)

So I think it would be good to just add an 'upgrading from previous versions'
section and add things like the name change?
I'd feel more comfortable if you wrote the text for this! I could commit this
as-is, or you could modify the patch, either way.

I don't think we should retroactively create any new JIRA issues for things
that have been done. but related to the topic i had a few ideas in general
regarding JIRA (not trying to suggest any hard-and-fast rules either):

If a user reported something on the user list (strange behavior, bug, api
problem, javadoc typo, whatever) that inspires a code change, i think we should
always open a jira ticket, no matter how trivial. this way its easy to give the
user credit for contributing.

Along with the previous, its also good to suggest users to create their own
tickets in JIRA if at all possible. This gets them sucked into signing onto
JIRA.

Finally, for issues that might require a lot of fairly mechanical/simple
changes like the name change issue, we can always open an issue: this gives an
opportunity for additional contributors to do some of the work. A good example
of this is LUCENE-1257, which was generification of Lucene API for 3.0. Lots of
people stepped up and contributed help, even risking code reviews from our
picky Generics Policeman.

I'm probably that last person that should be suggesting these things, but it
was just some general ideas that might invite more contributions.

I certainly have no problem committing this as-is.
The name change, however, is indeed official. We did finally conclude that
we'd change all the package names and class names that had LCF in them to ACF
as well. If you think there should be a ticket that covers that work (which
has already been committed), just let me know.

Karl, thanks for taking a look.

I see the name change is still a bit up in the air... if there is no problem
committing this as-is, I can do it later, and we could add docs/JIRA issue for
this afterwards (whatever the name turns out to be)?

Looks good so far.
I'd also consider adding something about the change from LCF to ACF, and the
associated package changes, since that will invalidate people's setups.
