[Cooker] 7.0 Updates Location
I don't know whether this is the right place for this. If not, my apologies >From the web site, - February 5 2000 - New ISO image available Due to a bug in the installer that caused problems when resizing certain FAT partitions and some additional smaller issues, a new Mandrake 7.0 ISO image called mandrake70-2.iso is available for download at the usual locations. If you have the previous ISO image, just replace your Mandrake/RPMS/draxtools-1.0-43mdk.i586.rpm package by drakxtools-1.0-44mdk.i586.rpm, upgrade to the new boot images and use them exclusively. -- --- There is an inconsistent treatment of "updates" at present. The update to draxtools is in the main RPMS directory and not in the updates area, while the updated boot images are in the updates area and not in the main ISO area. Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!
You make it sound as though I was dealing with beta software. I was commenting on the inadequacy of a released product ( http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/announce-air.php3 ) to deal correctly with my data (I got it 3 days after it was released), when there was no mention anywhere of any problems re partitioning. In fact, Mandrake use this as a big marketing tool with no mention of any problems anywhere on the site There is still no reference to 7.0 in the updates area of the site. Problems with partitioning on install have now been acknowledged as have other install problems. There are just too many problems with 7.0 for it to be considered release quality. Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!
This idea didn't work for me. Here's what happened I went to install MDK7.0 on an 8 GB disk with WIN98 on it. Told partitioner to give 2 GB to Linux (leaving 6GB for Windows) After it all went horribly wrong and I ended up with a corrupt Windows that wouldn't boot, I started from scratch. I deleted the Linux partition (and swap) using the MDK 7 installer, rebooted to DOS, ran fdisk, deleted and recreated my DOS partition. This said everything was fine and showed an 8GB partition. I reinstalled WIN98 (and all my apps), only to find it thought I had a 6GB drive still. Partition Magic 5 fixed it, but only after I resized the Win98 partition to 6GB, then back to 8GB. So, after a day of re-installing, the cost of Partition Magic 5, I would concur that these sorts of problems should have been cleared up before release. On my second machine, which has had about every prior release on Madrake on it without a problem, the install problems are different but just as bad. It's a P120, 32 MB RAM, 1X6 and 1X2GB drive, 6XCDROM, Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro. After numerous attempts where the graphical installer wouldn't work, I finally got it going with the text installer. The text installer is not as good as what was there. It would not allow individual package selection. So finally, I'm up and running. But no mouse. Mouseconfig had linked /dev/mouse to "ttyS0". After manually linking it to /dev/ttyS0, i got my mouse. How basic an issue is this Now to configuring sound. Whereas the sound card (SB16 equivalent) had been picked up by previous versions of MDK, 7.0 did not configure it correctly. Had to manually set the DMA to the correct setting. A minor issue, but I'm curious as to why. Next, KDE. I chose the video card, monitor and setting the same as they've been in the past and it said it coudn't do it. By this stage, I'm fast losing confidence in MDK. Simple things that worked in the past now don't work. Re: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed!
Thank you, Corrupt Windows partition is what I ended up with. using such a CD to start the installation may result in some cases in corruption of your Windows partition if it is resized during the installation. Ron Stodden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 31/01/2000 12:19:53 PM Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mandrake Cooker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> cc: Subject: [Cooker] 7.0 release delayed! All, There are new floppy images in the updates/7.0 directory of the mirrors. Included is README.img, which I include inline below. Note particularly (and with great joy and relief) the final paragraph (). - The following files are boot images which correct a problem in the ISO image mandrake70.iso dated Jan 12, 2000: cdrom-2.img: install from CD-ROM hd-2.img: install from hard-disk network-2.img: install from ftp/nfs/http pcmcia-2.img: install from pcmcia devices If you intend to install Linux-Mandrake from mandrake70.iso on a machine that already has Windows installed, you must start the installation process with a bootable floppy disk created from cdrom-2.img, as described in the files INSTALL and install.htm. Although a CD created from mandrake70.iso is bootable, using such a CD to start the installation may result in some cases in corruption of your Windows partition if it is resized during the installation. To use the boot floppy: 1. Place the floppy in your first floppy drive (A:) and reboot your machine. The installation procedure will be started from the floppy. 2. If prompted, select your CD-ROM drive from the list provided. 3. When prompted, insert CD #1 and continue the installation. Note: On some systems you will need to insert both the floppy and the CD together and reboot. In this case, be sure that the install starts from the floppy and not the CD. A new ISO image mandrake70-2.iso correcting the problem will be available shortly. Keeping its dedication to quality, MandrakeSoft has chosen to postpone the commercial release of its Linux-Mandrake 7.0 distribution to ensure a maximal quality for this product. --- -- Regards, Ron. Re: [Cooker] mandrake70.iso
Reasoning to go to 7.0 1. New PC - SoundBlaster live 2. dual CD's ( one a Ricoh 7060 SCSI). Supermount sounds useful. 3. Partitioning tool to help set it all up 4. Every previous version of Mandrake loaded successfully, so why not 7.0 5. It's released. After my problems (on my old faithful as well as my new box), I looked through alt.os.linux.mandrake There are numerous other issues with the installaiton. Any advice greatly appreciated. I don't mean for this to sound accusatory, but I thought this would have been tested a bit more thoroughly before release. This seems to be a problem that unfortunately occurs more and more regularly regardless of distro. BTW: What was the reasoning for making the leap to 7.0 from 6.1?

Same problem here on two different machines. Is this being worked on / fixed ? At present I have Mandrake 7 CDROM which is totally useless.
