Leaving aside the KMix issue, the other problems described above all seem
resolved for me in 9.1 Final so probably this bug report could be closed now.

I just installed Mandrake 9.1 RC1 and sound is terrible with my Hercules Game
Theater XP. Volume is very low and when playing anything it crackles a lot and
there is a lot of hiss. I tried adjusting volume in mixer but I couldn't get
sound to normal. Sound worked just fine in Beta 3.

Well, the final straw was the stuttering/jumping of mp3 playback when I did nothing
more then press PageUp or PageDown within my editor. I decided to revert back to 9.0
and now my sound system is all completely back to normal - no changing of settings, no
jumping, no stuttering, no KMix problems. Hopefully all of this information might
help someone cleverer than me work out what's wrong with sound in 9.1RC2. I can't
work without decent mp3 playback :-D

I'd like to add just one more comment, I'm not sure if it's specifically Game
Theater XP Related so apologies if I'd posted this inappropriately, but...

I've been using 9.1RC2 and the new kernel as described above for a few days now
and use XMMS for mp3 playback.

On 9.0 I never noticed any interruption in mp3 playback unless I was doing some
Java compilation. Now, I get clicks, stutters, jumps and so on sometimes even if
I just switch desktop or ALT-TAB to switch windows. Sometimes it stutters even
if I'm not touching the keyboard. It seems mostly OK when _using_ an
application, but when I switch to do something else it's really noticeable, and
very annoying!

My CPU usage doesn't look high. artsd and xmms maybe about 2.5%.

I have out-of-the-box sound system settings in KDE, out-of-the-box XMMS etc.

Could this be driver related like the original problem appeared to be, or is it
worth posting a separate bug report?

I _do_ have a Game Theater XP. I'm looking at it right now, it's got Game
Theater XP written on it ;-)

I did update to the new kernel and that definitely improved things a lot but the
other problems still stand.

KMix volume control applet does not control the volume.

The mixer controls sure look duplicated to me, I have two master volume controls
for example. The volume slider is really odd too because from 0% to about 60%
there is absolute silence, then sliding up from 60 to 99% seems like an
exponential increase in volume and there's some really bad distortion at about 95%.

But to be honest, I'll accept what you say about KMix because my bigger problem
is the choppiness and stuttering of mp3 playback using XMMS. If I alt+tab from
one window to another the playback invariably stutters then jumps.

In one of my earlier posts I said on switching to the (black-listed) OSS driver
most of the problems went away.

On 9.0, everything just worked (really!).

Thanks!

I downloaded kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm and installed it over RC2.

The sound quality problem does indeed seem fixed, so thanks for the info.

The only downside is the remaining problem of KMix. The tray applet volume
control doesn't control the volume level, and there are still duplicate controls
when you open up the mixer itself.

At least I can play mp3's again.

This happens for me with my Game Theater XP on 9.1 RC2 too.

I managed to find a temporary workaround which is to use draksound to
choose the OSS cs46xx driver instead of the auto-detected ALSA snd-cs46xx
driver.

On making that change, the sound seems OK.

However, you get a warning that the cs46xx driver is black-listed and
snd-cs46xx is restored on reboot.

Additional info that might help someone fix this, if I use draksound to choose
the snd-cs46xx driver I get this error message (I have tried to make sure I
closed all applications that may be using the sound card):

[begin quote]
cs46xx: Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.11mdk/kernel/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz:
init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.11mdk/kernel/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod snd-cs46xx failed
insmod'ing module snd-cs46xx failed at /usr/lib/libDrakX/modules.pm line 61.
[end quote]

I find it strange that it says no such device when it seemed like the OSS driver
could see the device without any problem.

Output from lspci shows this:

[begin quote]
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 [IGD4-1P]

[end-quote]

And finally, here is the last bit of output from dmesg:

[begin-quote]
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0a.0

Sound Fusion CS46xx soundcard not found or device busy
Sound Fusion CS46xx soundcard not found or device busy

[end-quote]

...and then it sounds terrible again.

In addition, if you open up KMix and then choose show mixer window, you get
about 30 mixer controls (seems like a lot of duplicates) when the sound is bad
rather than the 8 or 9 you usually get when everything works properly.
