If you hit CTRL-ALT-BKSP, the shutdown takes over (it is in progress) and opens the bootsplash screen as it should have done to start with. This works correctly if MdkKDM is used as the display manager. It also works on systems which aren't using the bootsplash. It appears to be a race condition between GDM and the bootsplash code.
