[david@walluck skel]$ find /etc/skel -name Templates /etc/skel/.kde/Templates find: /etc/skel/tmp: Permission denied If "Templates" should be in ~/Desktop, then etcskel needs to be fixed. However, if ~/.kde/Templates in the correct location, it is not reflected in the current KDE packages, because I still only see "Folder" under new files types, so kdesupport still needs to be fixed. By the way, in there any way to update existing users home directories after a new etcskel RPM is installed? This is meant for new users, so existing users don't see the benefits of this. I realize we probably do not want to overwrite existing files, but if there is a fix to etcskel, existing users never see it. -- Sincerely, David Walluck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

(enlightenment complained at me that i needed to fix my $PATH, but it was too stupid to know the real cause of the problem. windows tries to blame you after you get a BSOD and then restart it too, come to think of it.) i concluded that mandrake _really_ wanted me to use kde, so i switched over to that. the terminal program is crucial to us geeks. if something so obvious as a desktop icon is broken, other parts of the software must be broken too. -- bd

For backgrounds, use Eterm-0.8.10-3mdk.i586.rpm or Eterm-O.8.10-4mdk.i586.rpm (uploaded in few hours). Warning: if you have Eterm-0.8.10-3mdk.i586.rpm, don't download Eterm-O.8.10-4mdk.i586.rpm. This one fix only a little typo. Hello! --- Chmouel Boudjnah <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> a écrit: > > -rpmdrake is confusing to me (how do I install packages from the > > CDROM?) and there's no Help in the menu... > what problems excatly ? Well, I'm just saying that it is not entirely intuitive to install packages from the CDROM using rpmdrake (or the other package software). I tried adding the CDROM location but can't seem to make the available packages on the CD-ROM appear in the tree. I'm also confused by the fact that DrakConf links kpackage instead of rpmdrake. Are they or aren't they the same thing? Personnally, I usually do this at the command-line, but it is not really something acceptable for some of my friends - so I'm trying to find out about the GUI way. > > -balsa, gnome-xbill and perhaps other appears in the Gnome and X > apps > > submenu but are not installed. Hmmm... Again, I'm confused: how is the quantity of apps related to the facts that some items in the menu are missing icons or are not actually installed? > > -Linux-mandrake should have a bugtracking software such as the one > > RedHat has... Hmmm... So should I start reporting bugs/wishlist stuff to that bug tracking system instead of polluting the mailing list? There doesn't seem to be any variable related to which version the user has (RedHat keeps track of rawhide beta bugs thru their bug tracking system). > > -initial window size for ktop doesn't let you see the % in the > > Performance meter. > hugh, take your mouse an resize the window ? no ? sorry. Funny guy, hey! Just something I thought for new users who don't usually read the documentation and can't know they have to resize it to see the whole information. Isn't there a way to specify a larger initial window size? Anyway, I know it's an extremely minor thing - just nitpicking so that the next version of Mandrake is perfect ;-). > what do you call menu structure. Well... I too find the lack of menu items a tad confusing at times. But then, it forces us to learn, no? hehehe One thing i hate, is how it won't let me add to the KDE menus using the KDE menu config tool. Only to the Gnome menu ("personal" menu) Another thing I found odd... right clicking on the desktop allowed me to make a folder, but not a kdelnk shortcut. Took me a minute to figure out how to make a folder make a link inside it.. copy the link to the desktop. and delete the original folder. Quite the silly work around. But sure to get tech support calls... no doubt! :-) Lou Guerriero --- -licq is installed but appears neither in the KDE Internet menu or the X apps Internet menu. While I'm at it, why not make a single menu for both GTK, X and KDE apps? I mean, separating them is artificial at best and may confuse new users.
[Cooker] Usage report on Oxygen...
Hello! A few things I've noted while using Oxygen: -Kdevelop: the number one KILLER APP! (or rather, killer app maker ;-)) Missing sgml2html and ksgml2html... Should be added as dependency to KDevelop 1.0 as everything would compile without warning with it... While creating the normal project template: Can't locate Ast.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /var/tmp/kdelibs-build-root/usr/share/kdoc /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005 . /var/tmp/kdelibs-build-root/usr/share/kdoc) at /usr/bin/kdoc line 17. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/kdoc line 17. And compiling: undecodable token: \1b[36l The only other thing missing is the C/C++ Reference provided at www.kdevelop.org. -All that software and no ncftp !!! Isn't it the best command-line ftp client? Ok, ok... I should be using gFTP anyway ;-) -rpmdrake is confusing to me (how do I install packages from the CDROM?) and there's no Help in the menu... -clicking on the Doc link on the KDE desktop pops up an empty kfm. Upon investigation, the alias is to an alias (no, not a typo!) to /usr/doc/mandrake/ru/mdkuserguide/index.html. Hmm, looks wrong... -nmap: what I'd consider an essential part of a Network Management workstation... -balsa, gnome-xbill and perhaps other appears in the Gnome and X apps submenu but are not installed. Is the menu static or custom generated?? -Many menu program are missing icons - it does not look very professionnal. Is this the way they are or is this a bug? -In kpm, if the CMDLINE is too long, the display is screwed (CMDLINE content word wrap but in a single line table cell!) -Linux-mandrake should have a bugtracking software such as the one RedHat has... Perhaps with an extra KDE app to submit bug reports with full hardware specs and software configuration from the desktop. -According to KDE help : "5.3 Using Templates to access Applications and Devices One of the folders KDE places on your desktop when you log in the first time is called Templates. It holds a number of files with a .kdelnk extension (not shown). These kdelnk files are used to represent the following in KDE: " Now where's the Templates folder? Is it possible it disappeared when I rm -fr ~/.kde/ ? Isn't it suppose to be that I right click on the desktop and I can put a "New" Application? While I'm at it, why not make a single menu for both GTK, X and KDE apps? I mean, separating them is artificial at best and may confuse new users. -Sounds is ok now, plays stereo both from VMWARE and KDE. Slight problem in VMWARE: speaker sometimes seems to "blow up" when a sound clip starts. -initial window size for ktop doesn't let you see the % in the Performance meter. -playing a *single* mp3 clip with kmpg creates the following weird thing (multiple instances, incredible but not actual memory usage): USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND rngadam 22810 0.0 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:00 kmpg /share/Elvis rngadam 22811 0.0 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:00 kmpg/share/Elvis rngadam 22812 0.0 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:00 kmpg /share/Elvis rngadam 22813 0.0 0.5 1600 752 ?S08:25 0:00 tplay-yaf -a rngadam 22814 0.0 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:00 kmpg /share/Elvis rngadam 22815 0.4 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:00 kmpg /share/Elvis rngadam 22816 0.0 0.8 1904 1024 ?S08:25 0:00 splay-yaf -a rngadam 22817 0.0 0.5 1600 752 ?S08:25 0:00 tplay-yaf -a rngadam 22818 0.0 0.5 1600 752 ?S08:25 0:00 tplay-yaf -a rngadam 22819 2.0 5.5 10312 7044 ?S08:25 0:04 kmpg /share/Elvis rngadam 22820 0.0 0.8 1904 1024 ?S08:25 0:00 splay-yaf -a rngadam 22821 7.5 0.8 1904 1024 ?S08:25 0:15 splay-yaf -a rngadam 22822 0.7 0.8 1904 1024 ?S08:25 0:01 splay-yaf -a Is this normal? Perhaps they all share the same memory but I'm left to wonder why exactly kmpg does this. -Eterm appears in the menu structure but is not installed. Once installed, I can't seem to make it do interesting stuff (transparency, backgroud pixmap) from the menu. -Some programs should only run with an su first (logview, ksnuffle, SysV init editor, GnoRPM, etc) when started as a regular user: they are actually in my menu but when I start them now I only get errors messages instead of the kde su popup. -Most script-fu fonts needed by Gim
