Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium 
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is spread almost exclusively by 
airborne transmission. Although the disease can affect any site in the 
body, it most often affects the lungs. When persons with pulmonary TB 
cough, they produce tiny droplet nuclei that contain TB bacteria, which 
can remain suspended in the air for prolonged periods of time. Anyone 
who breathes air that contains these droplet nuclei can become infected 
with TB. A person who becomes infected with the TB 
bacillus remains infected for 
years. Usually a person with a healthy immune system does not become 
ill, but is usually not able to eliminate the infection without taking 
an antituberculosis drug. This condition is referred to as "latent 
tuberculous infection." Persons with latent tuberculous infection are 
asymptomatic and cannot spread TB to others. Generally, a positive TB skin 
test is the only evidence of infection. About 10-15 million persons in 
this country are infected with M. tuberculosis. About 10% of otherwise 
healthy persons who have latent tuberculous infection will become ill

BEE-KEEPERS have been told to move their hives six miles from genetically
modified crop trial sites after shop-bought honey was found to contain GM
pollen. 
The instructions were issued by the Bee Farmers' Association and the
British Beekeepers' Association after honey bought by Friends of the
Earth was found to contain genetically modified components.
Bee-keepers are determined to save their industry and to maintain
consumer confidence in British honey by keeping the product GM-free.

They know that bees will travel up to four miles for pollen and so the
six-mile zone has been set as the safest minimum distance from modified
crops. They are seeking talks with ministers and demanding to be
consulted about the siting of GM trials. 
In particular they fear that if GM crops get commercial approval the
Government will not have to make the sites public and bee-keepers will
never know if their honey is at risk of contamination. 
Bee-keepers' associations are also calling for compensation for the extra
costs and work of having to move their hives away from the trial sites.
Liability for the GM pollution of honey is also unresolved. 
The demand for hives to be kept six miles away from modified crops is
also backed by the Honey Association, which represents packers and
importers. Supermarkets have made clear to them that they want to ensure
products are GM-free and have asked for the six-mile limit. 
The Department of the Environment said that the GM quantities involved
were minuscule and the Government's Advisory Committee on
Releases to the Environment had concluded there was no threat to human or
animal health. Friends of the Earth refused to name the beekeepers
involved. 



Beware of meddling with nature, says Prince

BRITAIN

THE Prince of Wales will today renew his attack on the potentially
disastrous consequences of modern science on the environment.

He will criticise the amount of resources being poured into GM technology
and call for more investment in traditional agriculture instead. 
In a Reith lecture broadcast on BBC Radio 4 tonight, the Prince will
claim the rush into genetic engineering means that literally
nothing is sacred and accuse scientists of treating the world as a
giant laboratory. 
The broadcast reflects a theme of Prince Charles' recent thinking - which
has included an attack on genetically modified food - but is sure to
bring him into conflict with the scientific and business communities. He
can expect to be criticised by the scientific world in particular, which
regards his thinking as worthy but woolly. 
In his attack on modern scientific methods he will say that there is a
need to rediscover a reverence for the natural world and
become more aware of the relationship between God, man and creation.

The Prince, who first voiced his concern about genetic manipulation five
years ago, wrote the 2,300-word essay during a recent pilgrimage to a
remote Greek monastery



E-mail guide to field invasion

INSTRUCTIONS to anti-GM campaigners on how to damage GM crops and take
direct action against farmers is being circulated by e-mail. 
The message describes direct action as the most wonderful and
liberating experience and suggests that one way of frightening
farmers would be to organise groups of masked protesters armed with
scythes to operate at night. It says that such action might goad farmers
into a violent reaction. 
The lengthy advice, from an unknown author, is being studied by Home
Office officials to see whether any offence has been committed. 
Some have received the guide from the e-mail address of a leading figure
in the Friends of the Earth Swindon branch. 
Jean Saunders, the branch spokeswoman, said she was not the author. She
understood the author to be an activist from Manchester who she had been
told was abroad at present. A FoE spokesman in London said it did not
advocate any direct action against crops or farmers. 
The e-mail also has tips on symbolic crop-pulling protests that
challenge the biotechnology companies by breaking down the
myth that anti-GM campaigners are vandals. Crop squats are also
recommended. 
Activists are told that if they seek legal advice, they should discuss
only hypothetical situations with lawyers. 
Tony Combes, the spokesman for Monsanto, said he had heard about such
guides. This just proves the task we are up against, he said.
Farmers are already being intimidated and we must take action to
stop it.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service was justified in
revoking the tax-exempt status of a small New York church that
opposed President Clinton's 1992 candidacy, a federal appeals
court ruled Friday.

The unanimous ruling said the revocation - history's first stripping
of a church's tax exemption for political activity - "neither violated
the Constitution nor exceeded the IRS' statutory authority."

Lawyers for the Church at Pierce Creek, in the Binghamton, N.Y.,
area, had argued that the tax agency had exceeded its authority,
violated the church's free-speech rights and engaged in selective
prosecution.

"These objections are without merit," a three-judge panel of the
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
concluded.

Federal tax law exempts churches and other charitable
organizations from taxation provided they do not engage in certain
activities, including any political campaign on behalf of or in
opposition to any candidate for public office.

The Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for
Separation of Church and State, said the ruling "slams the door on
mixing religion and partisan politics."

"This is a staggering defeat for Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and
others who want to convert America's churches into a partisan
political machine," Lynn said. "In light of this ruling, pastors who
allow partisan politicking in the sanctuary are jeopardizing their
church's tax exemption."

It was the Friday before Election Day in 1992 when the Church at
Pierce Creek and its pastor, Daniel J. Little, bought a full-page
advertisement in two newspapers urging voters to reject
Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton because of his
positions on abortion, homosexuality and the distribution of
condoms in public schools.

The "Christians Beware" ad appeared in USA Today and The
Washington Times. Americans United for Separation of Church
and State subsequently filed a complaint with the federal tax
agency.

After an investigation, the IRS revoked the church's tax-exempt
status in 1995, action held in abeyance during the legal fight. A
federal judge upheld the revocation last year, and Friday's decision
agreed with his reasoning.

The appeals court's decision focused most closely on the church's
free-speech claims, but rejected them as exaggerated.

"The church asserts first, that a revocation would threaten its
existence ... that a loss of its tax-exempt status will not only
make its members reluctant to contribute the funds essential to its
survival but may obligate the church itself to pay taxes," Judge
James Buckley wrote for the panel.

"In actual fact, even this burden is overstated ... As the IRS
confirmed in oral argument, if the church does not intervene in
future political campaigns it may hold itself out as a (tax-exempt)
organization and receive all the benefits of that status," he said.

Buckley's opinion also noted that churches can form separate,
non-exempt entities "for the promotion of social welfare," and that
those organizations can form political action committees to
participate in campaigns.

The New York church is represented by the Robertson-founded
American Center for Law and Justice.

"While we are disappointed with the ... case involving the Church
at Pierce Creek, we are encouraged that this court appears to
provide a blueprint for churches to express their beliefs in a
political context," ACLJ chief counsel Jay Sekulow said. "This is
an important development in the area of protecting the First
Amendment rights."

Sekulow said his group had not yet decided whether it will appeal
the case to the Supreme Court.

The case is Branch Ministries vs. Rossotti, 99-5097.

 What in the world is going on? Last night I ran into another CTRL email that
 froze my email. I had to go into mailstart and get rid of it after I
 identified it. I didn't note the name, but now, tonight a CTRL email froze
 me up under the name "William Shannon" --

 I must say I find it interesting that I identify the "Bill Richer" emails as
 being the cause of freeze up -- and then immediately the freeze up begins to
 happen with emails sent under other names. Again, I'm not accusing anyone, I
 just determined to get to the bottom of this strange problem. I've lost
 hours trying to determine what was happening -- and to straighten out the
 whole situation, probably days.

Since it seems to only be happening to you (I haven't had any problems, and
seemingly no one else, or at least very few), it would seem that this subject
would be better handled by taking it off-list and discussing it with your own
ISP and perhaps the ISPs of the emails you suspect are causing you a problem.

splinter group with which to worship.  Whatever qualities you may find in

IT IS THE SOURCE. I referred to the people of THE BOOK. You brought in
someone else's interpretation of that phrase which changed the meaning.

 Educators Under Armed Attack in Phoenix

 On Wednesday morning the 10th of May 2000, in a
 suburb north
 of Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. JW Zidar, and his partner,
 Dr.
 Lorraine were backing out of their driveway on their
 way to
 the airport.  They were setting off on a trip to
 Europe for
 a few days.  When, from all around them, began an
 action
 known as a "drawing down".  Men in full assault
 gear, with
 automatic weapons drawn and pointed directly at Mr.
 Zidar
 and Dr. Lorraine surrounded their automobile from
 all sides.
 Screaming for them to raise their hands, to freeze,
 to stop
 the car.  Dr. Lorraine, being in a mild state of
 shock at
 this unprecedented assault, did not immediately
 raise her
 hands, and so, two of the attackers pointed their
 gun
 directly at her head as one screamed for her to "get
 her
 hands up in the air".  At this point, Dr. Lorraine
 slowly
 raised her hands, as it dawned on her that the
 screaming she
 was hearing was directed at her.  She was later to
 remark
 that "all you see is guns.. all you remember is guns
 pointing at you."

 The attackers then removed Mr. Zidar and Dr.
 Lorraine from
 the car.  Taking one to the rear and one to the
 front of the
 automobile, their hands were cuffed behind their
 backs, and
 they were taken back into their home, where they
 were put in
 separate rooms under armed guard and interrogated,
 still
 handcuffed, for over an hour.

 No documents, no search warrants, no phone calls, no
 legal
 representation.  The assault team then held Mr.
 Zidar and
 Dr. Lorraine for eight hours under armed guard while
 they
 searched the premises.  In the exercise of any
 search
 warrant, by law, the owners of the property being
 searched
 have the right to accompany the search team as they
 conduct
 their search.  Mr. Zidar and Dr. Lorraine were held
 in their
 dining room as the searchers went through and
 removed their
 belongings from throughout their house. In all, 32
 boxes of
 their personal belongings were removed from the
 premises.

 At the end of the day, one of the federal agents
 asked Mr.
 Zidar if he had the documents which authorized the
 search.
 He replied that he had seen no such documents.  At
 which
 point, the agent, apologizing profusely, offered
 over a set
 of documents purported to be the authorization for
 this
 amazing set of events.

 Who are these enemies of the State?  Were these
 hardened
 criminals, drug dealers, or members of some Mafia we
 have
 not heard of?  Hardly.  These two, who are such an
 apparent
 threat to our government that they were drawn down
 at
 gunpoint, are teachers.

 Teachers?  That can't be.  This is America.  We
 don't send
 assault teams to raid the homes of teachers in this
 country.
 They must be criminals.  They must be conspirators.
 They
 must be inciting some sort of cult ritual, or
 encouraging
 people to riot or commit mass suicides or something,
 or this
 could not have happened.  They are stealing people's
 money,
 or perhaps they are stealing government secrets and
 selling
 them to the Chinese.  There must be some "logical"
 explanation for the events of this past Wednesday
 morning
 that we aren't being told.  Well, that is a fact.
 There
 are.

 These two people, along with another couple, a Mr.
 And Mrs.
 John Matthews, were raided Wednesday morning by
 armed agents
 of the federal government for teaching people the
 truth.
 Mrs. Matthews was on her telephone, making some
 arrangements
 to do with an upcoming graduation when the assault
 team
 knocked on her door.  She didn't hear the knock, but
 her
 son, who was getting himself ready for school, did.
 He
 answered the door just as the agents were preparing
 to use
 the "door bar" and break it down.  As he opened the
 door, an
 agent grabbed him and threw him up against the wall,
 pinning
 him there.  The agent barked out a demand for his
 name, and
 his birth date.  At that moment, Mrs. Matthews,
 hearing the
 commotion, rounded the corner to the front hall and,
 seeing
 the agents, said to her son "You do not have to
 answer any
 questions."  Apparently, that was the wrong thing to
 say at
 that moment, for in the next instant another armed
 agent had
 ripped the telephone out of her hand and pinned her
 arm up
 behind her back.  And so it was that two families in
 Arizona
 received a brand new education into the politics of
 fear and
 intimidation.

 What are the facts and findings here?  What events
 occurred
 which led up to this bizarre tale?  Mr. Zidar and
 Dr.
 Lorraine are the educators and founders of an
 educational
 organization named the World Community Educational
 Society
 (WCES).  Mr. and Mrs. Matthews are long standing
 members of
 that society. WCES has been conducting adult distant
 learning classes and live telephone classes through
 their
 college for some time, a little over three years.

There’s a new technology that’s adding fuel to the
already fierce debate over privacy on the Internet.
It’s a piece of software called NetRadar that can spy
on groups who are using the Internet to exchange
information and to organize.

The software will be used primarily by Fortune 500
companies and local police. It will enable them to
gather information on groups such as hackers,
protestors and disgruntled employees.

The tool works by scanning public areas on the
Internet — chat rooms, bulletin boards and commercial
databases used in Web marketing — and picking out key
words and phrases. It then makes sense of this
information by drawing inferences and displaying it in
a way that’s easy to understand.

Last week, at the Internet Defense Summit in Menlo
Park, Calif., NetRadar gave a demonstration to Sen.
Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., who oversees computer-security
issues as the chairman of the Senate Committee on
Governmental Affairs. Also there were over 100
executives from various Web-driven companies who met
with industry and government security experts to
discuss and create a blueprint for security on the
Internet.

Thompson acknowledged that the software raises some
questions about privacy on the Net. “I suppose the
more proficient the technology, the more you are going
to have privacy, Big Brother issues come about,”
Thompson said. “It’s real important that we make the
point that we’re only using public sources, and we
have to decide what the trade-offs are. Is it worth
the privacy trade-offs in order to be able to
apprehend the people more easily?”

NetRadar is very similar to technology now used by the
government to obtain information on terrorists around
the world. And just last month, the FBI said it was
considering using similar technology to gather data on
virtually any American.

“It means that you can never be sure how much
information might be gathered, almost on a whim, about
you,” says Stewart Baker, former National Security
Agency General Counsel.

'Depleted uranium': A tale of poisonous denial

GENEVA - When a United Nations agency announced that NATO had officially
confirmed using depleted-uranium munitions in Kosovo, the story hit the
world's media, then quickly faded.

The agency went on record as saying that there was too little
information for firm conclusions but no cause for serious concern. The
Pentagon officially echoed this, and attention shifted elsewhere.

For those following the story, this was another episode in a game of
hide-and-don't-tell that the U.S. government has been playing for years,
both at home and abroad. But as the game continues, there is cause for
serious concern.

The U.S. government denies there is anything harmful about depleted
uranium that would prevent its use in battle situations anywhere. (The
high-density metal, a waste product from nuclear power reactors, is used
in armor-piercing shells and in tank armor.)

Numerous independent experts say depleted uranium is deadly and will
pollute indefinitely those areas struck by the munitions.

They blame it for most of the illnesses of Persian Gulf war syndrome.

The Military Toxics Project, a non-governmental organization that has
been tracking depleted uranium for years, has just published an update.
Dan Fahey, its author and the project's research director for depleted
uranium, draws primarily on declassified government documents and public
statements, building a grim indictment of irresponsibility that is
nothing short of criminal.

Since the first use of depleted uranium in the Iraq war (a use that
continues today with the bombing of the no-fly zones), the controversy
has spread into the international arena, including the United Nations.

During the Kosovo war, the Pentagon brought out a RAND Corporation think
tank study to prove once and for all that depleted uranium is harmless.
Independent experts, contesting the use of depleted uranium in Kosovo
and Serbia, protested.

Later, in a paper entitled "Fear of Falling," Fahey analyzed the study
in detail, showing it to be a sham. Yet the U.S. government still cites
it as a proof that the depleted uranium problem has been laid to rest.

But NATO's admission, even unofficial, of depleted uranium use in the
Kosovo war alarmed aid agencies operating there.

The World Health Organization was asked to investigate. The WHO,
however, has an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency
giving the latter the last word over anything touching public health and
radiation.

A fact sheet on depleted uranium announced as in the works, was
canceled.

(The Atomic Energy Agency was set up in '50s by the nuclear powers of
the time to push the nuclear industry on a public wary of living with
nuclear waste and with radiation in general. The United States plays a
dominant role within it. Holding the only mandate in the U.N. system to
promote a part of the private sector, it has been repeatedly denounced
by non-governmental organizations as incompatible with the ideals
expressed in the U.N. charter.)

An initial U.N. mission to Yugoslavia in May produced a report of
serious contamination by depleted uranium. The report's sponsor, the
United Nations Environment Program's director, Klaus Toepfer, suppressed
it - under pressure from Washington, according to inside sources. It
nonetheless eventually leaked out.

The program's Balkans Task Force brought out a major study in October,
but the section on depleted uranium had been whittled down from 72 pages
to two on orders from Toepfer, again apparently under pressure from
Washington. The task force had tried to involve the WHO, but the Atomic
Energy Agency, in keeping with the agreement, excluded the WHO from the
radiation appraisal. Measuring was done using Geiger counters incapable
of detecting the particular alpha radiation that depleted uranium emits,
and none was found.

Meantime, in August, the WHO had announced it was undertaking a
"generic" (general) study of depleted uranium, but no details were
available. In March, it became known that the study was under the WHO's
Dr. Michael Repacholi, an electro-magnetic field expert, who, it has
since been discovered, has delegated it to Barry Smith, a consultant in
England, who is a geologist.

Faced with the Atomic Energy Agency's opposition to studying radiation
and health, the WHO has opted to study depleted uranium as a heavy metal
pollutant.

This is hardly of help to those exposed to tons of virtually
indestructible radioactive dust particles, including the international
aid agencies awaiting an official pronouncement from the WHO.

The recent NATO confirmation of depleted uranium use in Kosovo, complete
with a map, should have finally sounded the alarm.

After being put on hold for six months by NATO, the task force finally
had something specific and official, but the pressure was on to play it
down.

What follows is something I have not been able to reveal prior to this
point. As I mention at the end, I am now released from my promise of
secrecy. Please forgive the length--I think you'll find it worthwhile. This
covers many months of evidence and conversations, which I've had to keep
quiet.

The House Gov't Reform Committee had retained an infrared expert named
Carlos Ghigliotti, of Laurel, Md. Carlos had been working on the FLIR for
months, and shared a lot of his results with me. I'd pass him data when he
needed it, and he knew he could count on me to keep my mouth shut. Carlos
had done a lot of IR work -- including using it to spot polluters
contaminating Chesapeake Bay, and diagnosing electronic errors (a bad
connection or phase mismatch heats up). He loved his work, and was proud of
some electronic inventions which enabled him to link together visual and IR
imaging into a single image. He got into some courtroom work--chiefly
determining if FLIR used to justify a drug search warrant was properly used
or not. He had two principles: (1) if retained, he would tell the absolute
truth as to everything and (2) he would never accept a second retainer from
a drug suspect. No matter how egregious the misuse a second time around, he
wasn't interested in being of assistance to a man who violated the law a
second time.

He'd just had a case where an attorney tried to grill him... but the
more questions the guy asked, the deeper he got into the hole, until the
courtroom security guards were all wandering in and sitting in the back,
amusing themselves at the attorney's expense. Carlos knew his stuff, and he
laid it right on the line.

I talked with Carlos over the phone a lot, and visited him in his lab a
couple of times. I now forget the first one, but the second visit was the
day Mike McNulty previewed his latest film in DC.

Thru the committee, Carlos was able to obtain a much better quality tape
than any anyone else had. He discovered that, when FBI gave out "first
generation copies," it was in fact giving out copies of a digitized
"master," not of the original analog tape. Digitization compresses the
image, and loses some of its quality. He demanded and got, thru the
Committee, a copy of the original tape, on Super VHS, with some other
tweakings to make it the most perfect copy possible. He said they brought

US Notes Possible Caspian Oil Find

WASHINGTON (AP)- The possibility of a new vast petroleum reserve in the
northern Caspian Sea near Kazakstan would, if confirmed, have an enormously
positive impact on that country and others in the region, a State Department
official said Tuesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was responding to an
account in The Washington Post, which said that initial indications suggest
that the find may well be the largest oil discovery worldwide in 20 years.

The State Department's public response was cautious, with spokesman Richard
Boucher pointing out that the claims are based on the production of a single
well. He also noted that the commercial interests involved have not made any
announcements as yet.

Boucher said the matter was one of great interest to the United States,
pointing out oil was high on the agenda of Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright during her recent trip to Central Asia.

The administration has taken a keen interest in the placement of the
pipelines that are planned or under construction for carrying Caspian oil to
European markets. Boucher said officials have ``worked very hard in a
concerted way with the people of the region'' on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan
pipeline, which traverses Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

Other officials noted that the administration wants to prevent Iran and
Russia, two other Caspian countries, from dominating the oil trade in that
region.


Putin seen pushing Moscow's role on C.Asian visit

ALMATY, May 17 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will aim to
reassert Moscow's position in the strategic Central Asian region on Thursday
and Friday when he visits the former Soviet states of Uzbekistan and
Turkmenistan.

Security concerns related to neighbouring Afghanistan are expected to top the
agenda during talks between Putin, on his second trip abroad since being
sworn in earlier this month, and the Uzbek leader Islam Karimov.

And a deal whereby Turkmenistan, which also shares a border with war-torn
Afghanistan, could supply huge volumes of gas via Russia, will be discussed
during the second leg of the tour.

``Improved Russian-Uzbek relations are mainly due to concerns over security
and the aim of strengthening the southern border of the old Soviet Union,''
said Andrei Grozin of the Moscow-based Institute for Integration and
Diaspora.

Karimov and Putin, prime minister at the time, found common ground when they
met in the Uzbek capital Tashkent in December. Both see Afghanistan as a
threat to stability in the volatile, resource-rich Central Asian region and
beyond.

Karimov narrowly escaped death when a series of bombs went off in Tashkent in
February, 1999. He blamed the attacks on radical Islamic opponents suspected
of operating from bases in Afghan territory controlled by the ruling Taleban
militia.

Putin believes there are links between the hardline Moslem movement and
separatist fighters waging guerrilla warfare against Russian troops in
Chechnya.

Russian media have speculated that Putin and Karimov may agree on military
and financial aid to Ahmad Shah Masood, the ethnic Tajik leader of an
opposition alliance fighting the Taleban but controlling just 10 percent of
Afghan territory.

CONTRAST WITH YELTSIN WILL BE CLEAR

Analysts agreed Putin would prove more assertive yet diplomatic than Boris
Yeltsin in a region whose leaders have been keen to distance themselves from
the capricious, sometimes heavy-handed, actions of Putin's predecessor.

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov welcomed the apparent change in
attitude.

``What we had five years ago, when they (Russia) forced ultimatums on us when
they wanted to buy gas, will not be repeated,'' he said on state television
on Wednesday.

The contrast in styles will be underlined by memories of Yeltsin's 1998 visit
to Uzbekistan, when a stumble followed by a curtailed stay in Kazakhstan due
to illness signalled for many the beginning of the end of his leadership.

In the Turkmen capital Ashgabat, Putin will discuss a deal for 50 billion
cubic metres a year of gas going through Russia, though Niyazov said
differences remain over pricing.

The project is seen by some as a snub to Washington, which wants Niyazov to
commit natural gas to a proposed trans-Caspian pipeline to Turkey, bypassing
Russia

Pope Reveals Fatima Secret His Way

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope John Paul II said Sunday he'd been deeply moved by
his trip to Portugal, where a day before the Vatican revealed that the
so-called third secret of Fatima involved a prophecy of the 1981 attempt on
the pontiff's life.

The pope chose the Vatican's No. 2 - Cardinal Angelo Sodano - to reveal the
vision seen by three Portuguese shepherd children in 1917. Sodano said in an
interview published Sunday that the pope had wanted to put an end to decades
of speculation surrounding the secret.

Many believers had feared the secret was about some apocalyptic end looming
for humanity.

``It seemed opportune to reveal these symbolic visions, also to show that
there wasn't anything mysterious,'' the Italian cardinal said in Rome's daily
La Repubblica.

The other two secrets - based on several visions the little shepherds of
Fatima had of the Virgin Mary starting on May 13, 1917 - had been revealed
decades earlier. The visions foretold the end of World War I and the
beginning of World War II, and the rise and fall of Soviet Communism.

The pope's third pilgrimage to Fatima coincided with the anniversary of the
May 13, 1981, assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square, in which he was
gravely wounded.

Two of the three shepherd children died of pneumonia at the ages of 9 and 11,
two years after the visions. Their cousin who also saw the visions, Lucia Dos
Santos, is now a 93-year-old cloistered nun in Fatima.

``Still strong in my heart is the emotion felt yesterday at Fatima in
beatifying the little shepherds Francesco and Giacinta Marto, who, together
with Lucia, still living, had the privilege of seeing the Madonna and
speaking with her,'' John Paul told the public gathered in St. Peter's Square
at noon Sunday for a ceremony to ordain 26 priests.

Sodano told the faithful at Fatima on Saturday that the shepherds interpreted
a vision of a ``bishop clothed in white'' as signifying the pontiff. In the
vision, the figure ``falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of
gunfire,'' Sodano said.

The cardinal said the pope had credited the Virgin of Fatima with lending a
``motherly hand'' to guide the bullet's path and spare his life.

John Paul, who turns 80 on Thursday, has asked a commission led by Cardinal
Joseph Ratzinger, his top guardian of orthodoxy, to issue a text and
commentary about the third secret.

Asked in the interview why the pope chose now to reveal a secret he learned
in 1978 in the first days of his papacy, Sodano said: ``Fatima was the most
proper place, a symbolic place in the moment in which a millennium,
especially such a tormented century so full suffering, closes.''

Referring to the atheism promoted by the now defunct Communist regimes in
Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, Sodano said Saturday that Fatima's call
``to conversion and penance, issued at the beginning of the 20th century,
remains timely and urgent today.''

The pope on Sunday encouraged prayer and penitence for the church ``for the
conversion of who those who live in sin and for peace in the world.''

Milan's daily Corriere della Sera quoted the pope's 1981 attacker, Mehmet Ali
Agca, as saying: ``I am sure a supernatural force pushed me to shoot that May
13th 1981.''

Mehmet, a Turk, is serving a life sentence in an Italian prison. However
those serving life sentences in Italy rarely spend more than 20 years in
prison before being released, and Agca has petitioned for an early release.

``If I get out of prison, I will go to kneel before the Madonna of Fatima and
I will stay there 10 days in prayer,'' Agca was quoted as saying.

Pope's Attacker Had Second Thoughts

in 1981 said Monday that he almost walked away from St. Peter's Square that
day without pulling the trigger.

Mehmet Ali Agca was interviewed on a talk show late Monday on RAI state TV
about the Vatican's revelation two days earlier that the so-called third
secret of Fatima was a prophetic vision of the assassination attempt.

The church says the prophecy was delivered to three shepherd children when
the Virgin Mary appeared to them in Fatima, Portugal, on May 13, 1917.

Speaking from his prison in Ancona, on Italy's east coast, Agca offered the
public his version of the dramatic moments during the pope's general audience

Belgian Royalty Almost Attacked

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - A former Spanish priest who served jail time for
lunging at Pope John Paul II with a rusty bayonet vaulted over security
fences and rushed at the Belgian royal couple on Tuesday. He was overpowered
by police.

Juan Fernandez-Krohn ran toward the red carpet in front of the Royal Palace,
where King Albert II and Queen Paola were awaiting the arrival of King Juan
Carlos of Spain, who was making a state visit. Fernandez-Krohn, who is
familiar to local journalists, was grabbed by police and secret service
agents some 40 yards from the royals.

Fernandez-Krohn received a seven-year sentence for his attempted attack on
the pope during John Paul's visit to the shrine of Fatima, Portugal, in 1982.
Fernandez-Krohn was freed early and moved to Belgium, where he has been in
trouble with authorities for distributing anti-Semitic tracts and fighting
with neighbors.

Witnesses said he did not appear to be armed when he was detained Tuesday. He
was shouting in Spanish as he ran, but it was not immediately clear what he
was saying.

I live in the boonies in the mountainous region of Alabama and we have a
problem here with meth  labs, too.  The latest is to use an old RV or camper
or van and drive around on secluded back roads while cooking the stuff.
Then the waste products are dumped in an obscure place.  Now we have
helicopters at tree top levels scanning for this in addition to marijuana.
Something about being scanned from above like that does not sit well. It is
a form of search of one's property.  And sometimes the labs are stationery
but the police find them while on the premises supposedly on other business.
I also wonder if that is all they are scanning for with these periodic
fly-overs.

 I am aware of this, and they also limit the sale of cough medicine that
contains Dextro Methorphan as well because it is similar to Ketamine in how
it acts on the body in higher doses.  My comment is; "so what", if you want
drugs you can get them, and ephedrine and DXM are a lot better as
alternatives to some more acceptable drugs.

May I suggest Jim, that perhaps the problem is in your machine and
not with the emails? Was it on this list the other day where someone
suggested a deep format of the hard drive should be performed
every so oftenI do exactly that...purge the junk!!!

YOUTH AND MASS MEDIA
Smoking and Advertisements in Mass Media/36

Are smokers the only real heroes?  Certainly not in
life.  But what about the movies, television or
adventure stories?  It is almost impossible to provide
precise statistics but the truth is that examples
where the main hero of an exciting story reaches for a
cigarette or a cigar in decisive moments, or has a
cigarette dangling from his lips while he calmly
solves a difficult situation, are, to say the least,
not rare.  It is, simply, a stereotype that is never
missing from a scenario and is always used very
suggestively to influence an audience.

Some might say - but it doesn't matter, in the end
smoking or not smoking is a personal affair.  Of
course it is, but the influence of some media, for
instance, television, in creating attitudes and habits
especially in adolescents, is exceptionally strong,
and this has been proved by many sociological and
psychological surveys.  What good is it if, in a
number of countries, cigarette advertising is curbed
while indirect promotion of smoking has practically no
limits.

Film and television heroes who smoke clearly have a
greater influence on the value-orientation of
teen-agers than the loudly proclaimed Barnum-like
advertisements of tobacco firms.  The problem which
for years now has been the subject of an anti-smoking
drive by doctors, teachers and psychologists in many
Western countries does not concern only films and
television but also, for instance, "comics" for
children.

The country where this problem is especially urgent is
the United States.  For years, the USA has held the
leading place in a list of countries with the greatest
consumption of tobacco products per person.
Manufacturers of tobacco and cigarettes in the United
States traditionally form an influential pressure
group and the big anti-smoking campaign has so far met
with only marginal success.

What is interesting, however, is that the seriousness
of the situation and the danger involved in indirect
promotion of smoking is beginning to be realized by
some publishers and writers of stories for children
and youth.  For example, the author of a number of
comic texts, T. Casey Brennan, began a campaign with
his friends several years ago called: Cartoon heroes
needn't smoke!  "The important thing," said Brennan,
"is protecting children.  Comic books have a lot of
influence on children.  When a comic book hero is
shown smoking, it's like subliminal cigarette
advertising."

Brennan's group has appealed to a number of public
figures, Congressmen, publicists and journalists in
the USA and abroad urging their support.  The bulletin
of the World Health Organization called WORLD HEALTH
carries information about this movement which is still
relatively small.  Only the future will tell whether
such a campaign will bring about any substantial
improvement in the situation.  But it certainly
deserves attention.

Hi,

It was a three-page BLACK MISTRESS 
story and it appeared in 1979's TARA ON THE DARK CONTINENT # 2. I don't 
have FEMFANTASTIQUE #'s 1 or 2 yet, so I didn't realize that the Phantom Lady

Castle Mirage - The Prelude: Conjurella

This is the story of little mice.  David Ferrie's mice.  No, this is the story of Conjurella, and her daughter, Glinda; they were both there when I first met David Ferrie in Ohio, at the Old Covered Bridge; so were Mama and Daddy and Uncle Johnny.  Everyone is dead now, except me, and, I think, Glinda, so there is no one to ask.  But I think it must have been the summer of 1953.  I started school in September of 1953 at Swamp School on Bricker Road in Emmett, Michigan; a one-room school on a gravel road which boasted my late mother as the CEO of its Board; it was sometime around then that the meeting at the Old Covered Bridge took place.
It looked something like a covered wagon, over a small stream through a narrow road cutting through fields and brush that stretched on forever.  This was 1953.  The only war we might have lost had been over for less than a decade.  Oh-ess-ess was a whisper that lingered in the air; a song that was over, yet the melody haunted us.  War measures meant many things to those caught in the web of that whisper, oh-ess-ess, so softly spoken, a love song, a lullaby, a death threat.  I don't remember, but I think that whisper was in the air when we first met David Ferrie.  Uncle Johnny helped arrange it; Uncle Johnny said he was a finder.  Daddy and Uncle Johnny park the car right on the bridge, and get out "to take a walk" -- there is something on the car radio, or maybe Daddy and Uncle Johnny tell us, about "two escaped convicts" believed loose in that area.  Mama and Conjurella get in the front seat.  Glinda and I are in the back seat.  Has MK-ULTRA begun yet?  They must have given me some of the amnesiac hypnotic drug that Dr. E, the hypnotist whose work formed the basis for Mama's obsession with hypnosis as noted in Castle Mirage, would later fore on me in a more conventional setting.  Glinda is my age, she is five.  she sees the Perfect soldier, David Ferrie, standing guard.  Everyone has told me: "Don't see that soldier," but Glinda says, "He sees that soldier."

I also had this problem a few times.  It hasn't happened to me since I switched
ISPs back in February.  I use Netscape under Win95.  It seemed to happen
whenever someone emailed an article as an large attachment.  I wonder if it's
the mailer.  Both BR and WS use AOL 5.0 for Windows.  I've also had problems
with posts sent by MS Outlook on a Russian list.  The Cyrillic coding would come
out garbled and freeze my Netscape.

"The Awful Truth" vs. "Jesus": God Help Us, We're
Back on Bravo Tomorrow Night!

Dear friends,
TV sucks.

It really sucks.

No, I mean it. It sucks so bad that I am ready to join
my wife and start reading books.

So, you ask, what the hell am I doing producing a TV
series? Good question. I am convinced that I will pay a
heavy price on Judgment Day.

   God: "So, you made TV shows?"

   Mike: "Yes, but...

   God: "Don't worry, it's a dry heat. Next!"

Of course, God will never admit to what really ticked him
off -- that I put my TV show on opposite... "JESUS"!

No, it won't matter to him that some heathen scheduler
at the Bravo network placed the debut episode of our
second season on tomorrow night (Wednesday, May
17) at 10pm -- right smack dab in the final hour of the
hit CBS mini-series on the life of His Son.

He'll just be steamed that I had the audacity to even
show up to work on "His night." (Brits will not find
themselves with this theological problem, as our show
airs tonight --Tuesday--at 11:30pm on Channel 4).

He will demand to know why Americans were even given
a choice.

   "Hmm, let's see what's on tonight, honey. There's uh,
   something called "The Awful Truth," and then
   there's...whoa! "JESUS!" I say let's go with our Lord and
   find out what happens to Him in the final hour!"

Hey, I think everyone knows what happens in the final
hour. But if you are one of the few who have been living
under a rock for the last 2000 years and don't know
what happened to Jesus at the end of his life, well, here
goes - I'm just going to give the ending away:

THE ITALIANS KILL HIM!

Then a lot of weeping and forgiving and spearing goes
on, a couple days later he comes back to life, and the
first person he sees is a prostitute. He then hangs out
for another 40 days, getting his 11 buddies ready to go
out and love their neighbors, and after that he flies up
to heaven -- where he's been pulling a 90 share in the
ratings, in all demographics, ever since!

There. That's the story. You don't need to watch
"Jesus." Trust me, he ain't watchin' it either.

So, now, after having risked the eternal fires of the
bottomless pit for the above screed, I want to
encourage you to phone the neighbors, fax the
relatives, alert your friends, and e-mail all the ships at
sea because WE'RE BACK TOMORROW NIGHT!!

"The Awful Truth," our Emmy-nominated television
series, returns for a second season tomorrow night,
Wednesday, at 10pm and 1am ET on the Bravo cable
network, (check your local listings).

On the premiere show, you'll notice right away that I'm
back on the street in Times Square to do the series. No
more stage! No more live audience! Just the bums and
low-life who still havent' gotten the message that Times
Square is now DisneyWorld North. As many of you
remember, we used the middle of Times Square as the
set for our show, "TV Nation." Now the place is overrun
with network morning shows, MTV, ESPN, and so many
billboards it's like one big advertisement for Corporate
America.

Just where we wanna be, in the belly of the beast.

In the first episode, we take off after this year's
candidates for President, trying to force them in to a
mosh pit. Then we take a 7-foot gun into the national
headquarters of the NRA.

Karen Duffy and Ben Hamper, are returning as
correspondents, and the head writer from the second
season of "TV Nation," Jay Martel, will also be doing
some reporting.

I know a lot of you don't have cable. But for this show
to exist, uncensored, it has to be on a network with the
guts to withstand any kind of pressure from the
powers-that-be. That narrows the choices down to but a
few, and none of them are on free TV. As the man once
said, our "free press" is for them that own the presses.

Being on Bravo is a blessing. Intelligent, creative
people who give us the space to make the kind of show
we want to make.

I do promise you that both seasons will be available on
home video, with the first season going on sale in a
couple of months (details to follow).

The reviews are already coming in for our new season
and we are overwhelmed with the response once again
("Entertainment Weekly" gave it an "A" this week --
where were they when I needed them in high school?!).

So that's the news. PLEASE send this e-mail to people
you know who would like to watch some provocative,
subversive television that respects their intelligence (if
you have unintelligent friends, send it to them, too,
'cause we have stuff for them also).

And Jesus, if you are reading this (and knowing you,
you aren't using Satan's ISP, AOL!), please forgive me
for going head-to-head with you on that other network.
If we had our way, we'd go over there and change the
ending so that you get to stay on Earth a little longer.

In light of the former Soviet Union's costly and deteriorating weaponry,
Russia has proposed reducing by half the number of warheads that may be
deployed by the U.S. and Russia under the START III agreement.  This
proposal would limit the number to 1,500 warheads for each side.

The U.S. has balked at the proposal, arguing that this low number would
jeopardize nuclear deterrence.  However, the more likely reason has to do
with Washingtonís plan to go ahead with its National Missile Defense
program, a plan that most NATO countries perceive as inherently
destabilizing. The U.S. is capitalizing on Russiaís weakened defense
posture to pressure them into accepting modifications of the 1972 ABM
Treaty which would allow the U.S. to go ahead with the NMD program without
violating the ABM Treaty.

The Monsanto corporation now has its sights set on the very
foundation of life, the world's water.  Over the past five years Monsanto
has developed quite a hold on seed agribusiness as they bought up over half
a dozen major seed and biotechnology industries. Now Monsanto is seeking
out the same opportunities with the accumulation of ample world water
sources.  Monsanto now sees it's chance with the emerging water crises in
India and Mexico.  These developing shortages are being exploited by the
multinational corp. as a business opportunity in what they perceive as a
'several-billion-dollar market.'  Monsanto's recent interest in water is
the compliment to earlier seed co. acquisitions to contract a
'consolidation of the entire food chain.'  The Indian MAHYCO Co., EID Parry
and Rallis have already been bought by Monsanto as vehicles for
'[penetrating] the Indian agricultural sector in a big way.'  Over
population and subsequent strains on the world's natural resources will be
a focus of big business in the years to come.  So control over these
resources is a "guaranteed source of profits." With control over water
Monsanto intends to strengthen its stance in aquaculture.  Eventhough
aquaculture has been proven to be "highly unsustainable" and Monsanto (by
their own words) being "a life sciences company committed to delivering
food, health and hope to the world" they will continue the nonsustainable
industry with attempts to privatize it and the world's water resources.
Converting the world's water into a private business is privatizing the
basis and the right to life.  For Monsanto this is quite the business
opportunity at the right price.

I have never had any CTRL email freeze my mail system, but the one from William Shannon that you mention got stuck in my new mail folder.  I couldn't delete it even with a hard reboot.  I had to figure out which one of the .pmm files referred to it and delete it through Explorer.  This has happened occasionally with mail from other sources as well.  I don't think it's anything other than an electronic hiccup.

Is there really a 'euro dollar'?

Many of you know that in an effort to unify the European continent, eventually 
becoming a United Countries of
Europe, the first step was to have a single currency.  Such a plan was advanced and 
adopted, to be based on the "euro dollar."  The policy
was implemented and the change-over was January 4, 1999.

Most of the currencies of the world are referenced against the U.S. dollar.  
In the case of the euro, it debuted at $1.17 and has now

This is a 24 percent decline to purchasing power for the member nations.  No one knows 
quite why the euro has fallen so, but they are not
happy about their money (purchasing power) being devalued 24 percent.  As to be 
expected, not all European nations joined;  England
specifically stayed out.
So the English pound has increased in value against the euro if only by default, and 
thus British and American travelers are bargain
shopping in Europe.

To start with there are no euro bills or coins in circulation, even though all 
the banking in the subject
countries is in euros.  For instance, their bank statements, telephone bills and 
electric bills are all in euros, but they pay in the
existing currency of their country (marks, francs, lire, etc.) at whatever the 
exchange rate is for that country against the euro.

So the question is why hasn't euro currency - bills and coins - been 
introduced into circulation to replace the
individual currencies?

For two years now the introduction has ben repeatedly postponed, which doesn't 
add confidence to the project.
Therefore. this past weekend, it was with more than passing interest that while dining 
out, I overheard a conversation at the next table
about the weak euro and other problems.

The story I heard was that the German government was to be responsible for 
making the currency engravings and
coin dies.  They did this.  They got the best engravers available, made the plates and 
printed a small press run so that each bank could
have one sample bill and a front/back photograph of each denomination to used for 
reference in spotting counterfeits.  This was all done
with the expected high German efficiency, quality workmanship and proper security.  
Transportation was by train with armed guards.  As
expected, everything was done to perfection.  The final part of the German assignment 
was to deliver the plates to France.  They were
delivered to the French government representatives, all duly accepted and signed for.  
The the German couriers and security went back home.

The problem appears to be that after the French government took possession, 
the plates are now missing, gone,
as in stolen, which is, in fact, why the bills are not in circulation and time is 
running out since replacement was supposed to be completed
by this summer.  There is no money yet;  it is all on ledger sheets.  And with the 
plates missing, you can't just make new ones.  Obviously
the design needs to be changed.  But to do that it must be acknowledged the plates are 
missing.  Not likely.  They still need bills of a
different design so the native currency can be replaced.

To keep this in perspective, I have no idea if the missing plates story is 
true.  But I was surprised to read
in Monday's 'Orange County Register'  http://www.ocregister.com/  that the euro was 
taking another hit and that, in fact, there are no euro
bills of coins in circulation.

I remember when all this came to pass and the nationalist battles that took 
place.  Some of the one-worlders
here even wanted the U.S. to turn in our money too, as well as make our Supreme Court 
subject to the World Court.
Hopefully neither idea will come up again before the next century.

ELIAN'S OPERA ISN'T OVER UNTIL NEARLY EVERYONE SINGS
Elian: The Opera

As our story begins, a 6-year-old boy, whose mother has perished at sea, is
saved by dolphins, who tuck his little legs back into his inner tube and nudge
him toward a fishing boat. "Not Since Moses," an opening aria by the first
dolphin (Peggy Noonan) indicates that there may be something unusual about the
lad. Other warbling dolphins (Dan Marino, Don Shula) point out Elian didn't
have a sunburn, an obvious religious omen of some kind. Besides, the fish is a
traditional Christian symbol, and dolphins, though mammals, are sort of like
fish.

At dockside, a lusty chorus of underemployed TV reporters join the aria,
singing "Not Since Di and JFK Jr.," thus indicating group yearning for a truly
meaningful news event. Soon all of South Florida is on stage singing "Not Since
Moses, Di, JFK and the Bay of Pigs."

A tense confrontation pits a group of principled conservatives shouting "Family
values!" against a clump of principled liberals chanting "The child's best
interests!" A government emissary bounds onstage to announce that little Elian
is too young for asylum, despite being interviewed by Diane Sawyer, and
therefore must be reunited with his father in Cuba. Both groups are stunned
into silence, then each starts singing the other group's song. The
conservatives musically insist that family values can't be all that important
if they make the local commie dictator look like a winner.

The liberals, never secure about family solidarity if a child-liberation suit
can be filed, and never quite sure why families need fathers at all, sing with
newfound emotion over the powerful father-child bond. Both groups rush
offstage, leaving behind the boy's savior, a brave camera-ready fisherman (Kato
Kaelin). He sings movingly about how Elian likes to lick his face.

Act II, which many critics consider dramatically weak, features Attorney
General Janet Reno (Dan Aykroyd) sitting motionless for five months while
pondering what to do. Every few weeks she moves a few inches, usually to phone
President Clinton (John Goodman), but all she hears is a recording, singing
"I'm not here, Janet. You're doing just fine." Narrative drive in Act II is
provided by Al Gore, who races back and forth across the stage, exposing a wet
finger to the wind.

Act III opens with a festive, circuslike atmosphere. Elian's grandmothers
arrive from Havana, allowed out briefly by Fidel Castro (Woody Allen). One
granny playfully bites Elian's tongue, unzips his pants and makes proud
comments about his private parts. A Justice Department pediatrician (Robin
Williams) is doing magic tricks. One trick is diagnosing psychologically
endangered children around the country whom he has never met, including Elian.
The crowd applauds and calls him "Carnac." Only one man in this merry crowd is
sad. He sings a bitter song -- though he lives only two miles from Elian, he
hasn't yet been invited on either "Larry King" or "Geraldo."

Brushing away cobwebs with a firm hand, Janet Reno swings into action. She
sends gun-toting agents dressed like Darth Vader to invade the house. One, who
had missed media training, poses for a photographer with a massive gun in the
boy's face. To correct the erroneous impression that the boy was somehow
terrified, the government releases a happy father-and-son photo, which the
Miami relatives say is a doctored image, since Elian's hair is too short and he
is smiling.

The conservatives rush back onstage and sing the popular aria "Jackbooted
Thugs," from the 1993 opera "Janet Does Waco." Liberals reappear too, led by
the jubilant Justice Department dancers, who sing "Finally Janet comes out
ahead/Her first raid that didn't leave everyone dead!"

Elian's sexy cousin, the 21-year-old Marisleysis (Jennifer Lopez) sings her two
big numbers, "Federal Child Abuse!" and "Don't Cry for Me, Little Havana."
Alarmed that Marisleysis has been able to weep on cue for 145 consecutive TV
shows, the government sends out Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder (Eddie
Murphy), who announces that he held Janet Reno in his arms as she wept over
Elian. A chorus of reporters smack their foreheads in unision and sing, "You
did what?"

Sen. Trent Lott (Lyle Lovett) sings the powerful closing aria, "From November
to November," pointing out that little Elian was saved from the sea in November
1999, and will be saved from the Democrats on Election Day in November 2000.
All it will take, he explains, is six months of congressional hearings. A group
of reporters, all of whom have already filed 249 stories about Elian so far,
faint together. One sings that he would rather become a gravedigger or a house
cleaner than go through more of this.

On cue, the brave fisherman, who has been out of the spotlight for more than an
hour, moves center

  Today, schools and courthouses in eastern
  Kentucky are taking down displays of historical
  documents -- including the Mayflower Compact
  and the preamble to the state's constitution -- in
  compliance with an order from Federal District
  Judge Jennifer Coffman, who said the displays
  are a violation of the First Amendment.

  Set up over the course of last year in Harlan
  County schools and the courthouses of
  McCreary and Pulaski counties, the displays
  have the effect of "conveying a very specific
  governmental endorsement of religion," says
  Coffman's order.

  Beginning as postings of the Ten
  Commandments, the exhibits were augmented
  to include historical documents that show
  America's reliance on Judeo-Christian value
  systems in civic life.

  According to Coffman's ruling, issued May 5,
  the additional documents were added by the
  schools and counties who "conceded that they
  did so in an attempt to bring the display within
  the parameters of the First Amendment and to
  insulate themselves" from a lawsuit filed by
  American Civil Liberties Union in November of
  last year.

  The judge claimed, however, the revised
  displays still do not pass constitutional muster,
  as they were specifically designed to promote
  Christianity.

  Displays contained the following documents:

   an excerpt from the Declaration of
   Independence, saying, "All men ... are
   endowed by their Creator with certain
   unalienable Rights, that among these are
   Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
   Happiness";

   the preamble to the Constitution of
   Kentucky, which states, "We, the people of
   the Commonwealth of Kentucky, grateful
   to Almighty God for the civil, political and
   religious liberties we enjoy, and invoking
   the continuance of these blessings, do
   ordain and establish this Constitution";

Christian Coalition Grills Judicial Candidates
The Idaho Christian Coalition's religiously based survey of judicial candidates
is an "outrageous stunt that smacks of the Inquisition," according to Americans
United for Separation of Church and State.
The Coalition, the state affiliate of TV preacher Pat Robertson's political
group, has distributed a 31-question survey that asks candidates for the Idaho
Supreme Court where they stand on religious and political issues.
Said the Rev. Barry Lynn, Americans United executive director, "This is an
outrageous stunt that smacks of the Inquisition. Judicial candidates' personal
religious beliefs are nobody's business. In America, the Constitution forbids
religious tests for public office."
Lynn was equally incensed by the Coalition's attempt to pressure judicial
candidates to take stands on issues that might come before the courts.
"This misguided crusade strikes at the heart of judicial impartiality," said
Lynn, an attorney as well as a minister. "Judges are supposed to weigh issues
and then apply the law of the land, not take purely political stands during
election campaigns. The Christian Coalition is way off base here."
Lynn noted that the American Bar Association Model Code of Judicial Conduct
says judicial candidates should not take stands on issues that are likely to
come before the courts.
Despite this ethical code, the Christian Coalition's Idaho questionnaire asks
candidates their positions on abortion, gun control and other controversial
matters. It also asks about the candidates' stands on "God's law."
Specific questions included:
Do God's Laws or Natural Laws have a high [sic] authority than laws enacted by
the United States Congress or the Idaho Legislature?
Do you agree that the United States Constitution is Christian-based?
Does hell exist as described in the Bible?
Do you believe in the fact that God created all the heavens, earth, creatures,
plants and man?
Do you believe that God inspired the writing of the United States Constitution?
Vis-á-vis abortion, are you "Pro-Life"?
Will you approve the displaying of the Ten Commandments in your court room?
Concluded Lynn, "Pat Robertson's true colors are showing. He and his group want
an America where their fundamentalist viewpoint is enforced by the courts. All
Americans ought to be outraged."

While I am as curious as anyone as to why this is happening to your email, I
suggest you get a yahoo! or other free email account just for CTRL. I have
never had a problem with the CTRL mail via yahoo (except for the fact that
their quota is a bit low.)

Attached are my internal notes from the meeting yesterday in
case they are of any value to you.



I attended the meeting at Exxon yesterday. There were
approximately 40 people in attendance--I would guess
representing 15-20 companies. Most were from the oil  gas
industry, although Texas Utilities and Simpson Paper were
represented, and Bernie Allen (Dow), Steven Cook (Lyondell
Petrochemical), Mark Bryson (Alcoa), and myself were there from
the chemicals industry.

Exxon and Amoco made the presentations, with occasional
contributions from Marathon. It was a very strange meeting to
me in that the approach of the presenters was pretty much like,
"This is the way it's going to be--do you want to get on board
or not?" The feeling of at least three of the chemicals folks
there seemed to be 'Not". I'll try to explain. Conoco will, I'm
sure, make their own decision as to whether or not they will
participate. A "delcaration" (sic) letter will be mailed out
with the meeting minutes/materials, Please let me know who in
Conoco would like to get copies of this information.

PROCESS:

The draft concept paper (attached) was developed by a very
small (2-3) group of companies from upstream oil  gas. Amoco
presented the paper to the group at the meeting as something
that has been agreed to at high levels and was not subject to
change. After a number of protestations from around the table,
Exxon moderated that stance somewhat by saying that good ideas
for change/additions could be considered. Amoco basically said
that they had better be real good ideas.

The belief was clearly communicated at the meeting that this
industry group was going to be in the leadership role in
transforming the concepts into a program that would be approved
by the Governors Office. The term "TNRCC" did not even appear
in the overheads that were used in the meeting. There were
references to TNRCC participation ranging from "participate
with us" to "call them in as a resource."  My input was that
this is neither a desirable nor a realistic approach. [House
Bill] 3019 clearly gives responsibility for development of this
program to the TNRCC and I believe that the commissioners take
that legislative mandate quite literally. I told the group that
I believe that TNRCC will be in the lead on this very soon.
Clearly, the "insiders" from oil  gas believe that the
Governors Office will "persuade" the TNRCC to accept whatever
program is developed between the industry group and the
Governors Office. I don't believe that will be the case.

There was some discussion about public input and support. The
concept put forward was that the industry group and the
Governor's Office would develop the program, then take it to
some broad-based group, including public representatives, who
would then tweak it a little bit and approve it.  I told them
that this was dreaming in today's

[CTRL] How Congress and DOD Screw Guardsmen

I can't believe this one.

Some 200 guardsmen from Tulsa and Oklahoma City are being
assigned to Bosnia for 9 months under 3 different sets of orders,
each assignment lasting 179 days.  That is one day less than the
180 days necessary to qualify for VA benefits.  The first 179 days
are being called "Active Training".  (Personally, I find Bosnia a
rather strange and inappropriate place to conduct training
exercises.)  The Guard Commander says his hands are tied - this
is mandated by Congress and DOD, and he has no choice in the
matter.

To make matters even worse, it appears this deceitful practice
began as far back as Viet Nam.

These people will be away from their families and civilian careers
for 9 months, but if any of them step on a mine and lose a leg, or
sustain any serious injury, there will be no VA medical benefits to
take care of the situation.  The individual will have to hope he has
private insurance coverage.

No wonder recruitment is at such low levels!

If you want a car, you buy it. Or, if you are a thief, you steal it. Business
is business. And crime is crime. We presume everybody understands that. It
seems fundamental in a real world.

 And what about public positions? If you want to be a judge, you, or your
friends, buy the job. Or, if you and your friends are crooks, you procure the
judgeship by blackmail. Yes, there are honest judges in America, but they are
an endangered species. [And we have to someday post a story just about that
and how some judges in really important matters have been murdered and the
Establishment does not deal with that.]

 As a court reform group, Citizen's Committee to Clean Up the Courts, we
have been greatly interested in two topics for more than 40 years. (1) How
does one become a judge? and (2) In the court rulings that we suspect are
tainted, "bought", or just plain crooked, one of the tip-offs is the judge,
or panel of judges, issues a ruling containing judicial perjuries, that is,
lies they insert based on supposed "facts", not in the record, but made up by
the Judges out of the air. [A Chief Federal Appeals Judge from Chicago that
does that is the subject of a previous story of mine. See "Chief Crook in
Microsoft Mess".]

 Starting about 1966, from various sources, we made up a list of "prices"
to procure a judgeship in a major venue, like Chicago. To become a state
judge in the local court, such as Cook County [or Crook County] where Chicago
is. The price at that time was 50 thousand dollars reportedly donated to a
key and appropriate official of the Chicago Bar Association, the lawyers
mafia union. [Now the filling of vacancies on the bench, temporary or
otherwise, leading later to permanent positions, is done through a Judge on
the Illinois Supreme Court, the state's highest tribunal. More about that
later.]

 To "buy" a chair in the U.S. District Court, such as in a sizeable town
like Chicago, in 1966, was 250 thousand dollars, "donated" or "contributed"
to the Senior U.S. Senator from Illinois who makes the pitch to the President
who generally appoints according to such an order from the Senior Senator,
especially if it is from the same political cabal.

 For a judgeship on a federal appeals court, like in Chicago, that covers
appeals from federal district courts in Wisconsin, Illinois, and
Indiana---well, the price was a million dollars or then and now, "sky is the
limit". Now those were 1966 prices, and the "costs" have gone up plenty since
then.

 Why would someone, or his cronies for him, pay 50 thousand dollars to be
a local state judge? First of all, it beats trying to make a living in the
law factories (that is what we call them) and running up and back to the
different courthouses and courtrooms. But more to the point, it enables the
would-be judge to take care of his political and financial confederates. And
since all too often, justice is for sale in America, it enables a person to
become a judge and live above his regular income, through pay-offs of some
kind, whether in cash or property, perhaps offshore. [At the time of

Suppose there were no morality, no laws against thievery and corruption.
There you are, the Judge. You are sitting at a table, or Bench, and on the
Bench is a matter awaiting your handling, worth a half a million dollars. So
what if 25 thousand dollars, or less, falls off the table, into your
suitcase. In business, it would be called a commission, a finders fee, or a
referral fee.

 The really big bucks cases are in the U.S. District Court, such as
Chicago, Los Angeles, New York. It would not be unusual for a multi-million
dollar matter to be on the docket of such a Judge. In the federal courts, you
are appointed for life. Federal Judges "shall hold their Offices during good
Behavior" so says the U.S. Constitution, Article III, Section 1. For many
years it was up to the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee what was "goo
d Behavior" to be determined, rarely invoked during the history of the nation
by way of Articles of Impeachment. That power has now been unlawfully
delegated to be determined by a "club" of judges called the Judicial Council
of the Circuit. That is, the appellate circuit encompassing the particular
U.S. District, such as 7th Circuit, Chicago headquartered.

 In recent years, the different Judicial Councils referred matters for
impeachment to the House Judiciary Committee, against basically honest judges
who by their rulings, angered America's secret political police, the FBI, the
Immigration and Naturalization Service, and CIA.For similar reasons, two
black U.S. District Judges were removed by Impeachment, one in New Orleans
and another in

IN CREATING HYSTERIA,JOAN ACO-cella

relates the modern history of mul-tiple

personality disorder (MPD), which

is now known as dissociative identity

disorder. Acocella asks why the diag-nosis

of MPD exploded from 1985 to

1995, then fell suddenly to the level of

an unusual, rare disorder. At the risk

of revealing too much of the plot, I will

summarize the chronology of this medi-cal,

psychological, and sociological

thriller:

1957: Corbett H. Thigpen and

Hervey M. Cleckley publish The Three

Faces of Eve. The Academy Award-winning

movie comes out the same

year, and "Eve White," "Eve Black," and

"Jane" capture the interest of the Ameri-can

public.

1962: C. Henry Kempe and col-leagues

publish the famous article "The

Battered Child Syndrome" in JAMA.

1974: Flora Rheta Schreiber pub-lishes

Sybil, the account of Dr Corne-lia

Wilbur's diagnosis and treatment of

a woman with MPD. Dr Wilbur thinks

that Sybil's condition was caused by

physical and sexual child abuse. The

Emmy-winning television movie ap-pears

in 1976, and Sybil becomes the

most famous psychiatric patient in his-tory.

In 1998, however, psychologist

Robert Rieber asserts that Dr Wilbur in-duced

Sybil to have MPD using hyp-nosis,

sodium penthothal, and thera-peutic

suggestion. Rieber bases his

conclusion on long-forgotten audio-tapes

of conversations between Wilbur

and Schreiber.

1980: Lawrence Pazder, MD, and

Michelle Smith publish Michelle Re-members,

a mass-market book that kicks

off the epidemic of satanic ritual abuse

allegations. The MPD and ritual abuse

movements overlap because many pa-tients

have complaints attributed to

both. The same year MPD is specifi-cally

listed as a diagnosis in the Diag-nostic

and Statistical Manual of Mental

Disorders, Third Edition.

The Rise of MPD: 1980-1995: After

Sybil, the diagnosis of MPD changes

from a rare to a commonplace event,

with seminars, conferences, hundreds

of scientific articles, and two compre-hensive

textbooks on the topic. Aco-cella

attributes the increased diagno-sis

of MPD, especially among women,

to the interaction of several factors. First

are factors related to therapy by well-meaning

but misguided clinicians, eg,

psychotropic medication, especially

benzodiazepines; hypnosis, "one of the

central pillars supporting the MPD

movement"; and guided imagery. Sec-ond

are the media: magazines, news-papers,

and television talk shows pro-mote

"utterly unskeptical stories about

MPD." Third are ideas with particular

appeal to women: that unhappiness can

be removed by making the right diag-nosis

and recalling traumatic memo-ries

and that revealing the abuse of fe-male

children and addressing it would

help promote political solidarity for

women. Acocella also mentions the re-covery

movement, the New Age move-ment,

religious fundamentalism, popu-lar

psychology, and the Internet as

influences on the popularity of MPD.

1984: The new MPD enthusiasts

found the International Society for the

Study of Multiple Personality and Dis-sociation.

Its journal, Dissociation,is

published for several years.

1988: Ellen Bass and Laura Davis

publish The Courage to Heal, and four

years later Renee Frederickson pub-lishes

Repressed Memories: A Journey to

Recovery From Sexual Abuse. These self-help

books are extremely successful.

They present symptom checklists for

readers to use in determining whether

they were abused, even if they cannot

remember abuse. They encourage thera-pists

to use a variety of techniques-

such as suggestion, hypnosis, dream

work, and guided imagery-to help cli-ents

recover their memories of abuse.

1989: Frank Putnam, MD, pub-lishes

Diagnosis and Treatment of Mul-tiple

Personality Disorder, and Collin

Ross, MD, publishes Multiple Person-ality

Disorder: Diagnosis, Clinical Fea-tures

and Treatment. Both theorize that

MPDis caused by trauma, usually child

abuse, usually including sexual abuse.

Both recommend the use of hypnotic

techniques, such as hypnotic age re-gression,

to flush out the alters. Dr Ross

sometimes identifies hundreds of al-ters

or personalities in a single pa-tient.

The Fall of MPD: According to Aco-cella,

the MPDcraze started to fizzle be-cause

of several forces: public educa-tion

through grassroots organizations

like the False Memory Syndrome Foun-dation,

criticism by professional orga-nizations

and senior mental health pro-fessionals,

and huge lawsuits against

therapists for iatrogenic MPD.

1992: The False Memory Syndrome

Foundation is established by Pamela

and Peter Freyd, whose daughter claims

that her therapist helped her recover

memories of childhood abuse.

Still Dreaming of the Third Temple


Why won't the messiah make up his mind?

 JERUSALEM — Anyone wandering about the Jewish Quarter here comes across
a startling poster displayed in various gift shops: a photo of modern-day
Jerusalem with all the Muslim holy sites excised.

 The shrines — the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque — have been on the
Temple Mount along the eastern wall of the Old City for 1,300 years.
Replacing them in the doctored aerial view is a "third temple" built on the
site of Herod's temple. Razed by the Romans in 70 A.D., it replaced the first
temple —Solomon's, which was destroyed in the 6th century B.C.

 In the poster, the new, white marble temple is surrounded by courtyards.
One shop, Levi's Gift World, sells the posters for a few dollars. A sign
reads: "Buy now before the Temple is rebuilt and prices go up."

 For many people, a third Jewish temple ranks on the same level as the
lost continent of Atlantis: wildly improbable and almost certainly the stuff
of legend. But for the devout, the 35-acre Temple Mount on Jerusalem's
eastern edge is the world's most hotly debated piece of real estate, from
where some Jews and many Christians believe the Messiah will someday reign.
'Center of universe'

 "This place has been sanctified by God from the beginning of time," said
Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute. "The foundation stone underneath
the Dome of the Rock was the center of the universe. Here Jacob laid his
head. Here Abraham tried to sacrifice Isaac. The heart of the Garden of Eden
is here. Adam's altar was located here."

 To this day, Jews do not walk on the site because the Holy of Holies —
the temple's inner sanctum —was there. Only the high priest was allowed
inside and the profane were not allowed near it. Because no one is sure where
the Holy of Holies was located, Jewish law bans the faithful from the area,
lest anyone should accidentally step on the spot.

 Muslims believe the site marks the spot from which the prophet Mohammed
ascended to heaven from a large rock — hence the name Dome of the Rock, for
the golden dome that covers a rocky area the size of an Olympic-sized pool.
Islamic tradition says the prophet's footprint is embedded there, along with
the handprint of the angel Gabriel.

 Although Israeli soldiers guard the Mount, a Muslim political-religious
trust called the Waqf administers the area. It allows non-Muslims there for
very limited amounts of time — mainly early mornings — and forbids Christians
and Jews to pray there. The Waqf has been accused of destroying artifacts
from pre-Islamic times.

Christians also interested

 As for Christians, they believe the entire area was much loved by Jesus,
who frequented its precincts 2,000 years ago. The New Testament (Matthew
24:15) suggests a third temple must be in place before the Second Coming.

 Barbara Ledeen, executive director of the Independent Women's Forum, a
Washington-based neo-conservative women's organization, remembers being a
staff writer at the Biblical Archeology Review when the magazine published an
article in the early 1980s about the location of the Holy of Holies. What
astonished her were the calls from Christian readers.

 "I was amazed Christians were remotely interested," she says. She and
her husband, Michael, ended up writing more on the matter in a 1984 article
in the New Republic.

 "What's happening is there's a fight for position around the Temple
Mount," she said. "Jews have been buying up property from the Arabs so their
access to the Temple won't be blocked. The tinderbox is right there. In order
to understand what the fight for Jerusalem is all about, you have to
understand the Temple Mount.

 "The secular Jews aren't reliable about it, either," said Mrs. Ledeen,
who attends a conservative synagogue in Chevy Chase. "[Former Israeli Defense
Minister] Moshe Dayan took control of the Temple Mount during the [1967
Middle East] war, but gave it to the Waqf because he's a secular Jew. He
didn't want to deal with it."

Earlier temples destroyed

 The first Jewish temple was destroyed by the Babylonians on the ninth
day of the Jewish month of Av, which works out to Aug. 10, 586 B.C. It was
partly rebuilt by Jews from Babylon 70 years later, starting in 516 B.C.

 Another more resplendent version was built by King Herod starting in 22
B.C. Built by 10,000 laborers over a 46-year period, this temple was known
for its magnificent white-marble walls and gold and silver plate exterior.
The glittering vision inspired worshippers arriving for the three major
feasts of Passover (Pesach), Pentecost (Shavuot) and Tabernacles (Sukkot).

 Herod's temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D., again on Aug. 10,
and only one wall, the famous "Wailing Wall" remains. It was renamed the

PARIS (Reuters) - The world's leading industrialized states, struggling
against Love Bug-style computer attacks from the most unexpected places,
opened a cybercrime conference on Monday with a call to prevent lawless
``digital havens'' from springing up around the globe.
French Interior Minister Jean-Pierre Chevenement, addressing officials from
the Group of Eight (G8) nations and private industry, urged countries to
agree on a world convention on cybercrime and harmonize their laws to crack
down on hackers, virus writers, software pirates and other Internet
fraudsters.

Governments and high-tech companies should develop a ''co-regulation'' of the
Internet, he told the three-day conference aimed at launching a dialogue on
computer security between the public and private sectors.

(Requires Yahoo! Messenger) Drawing a parallel to international measures
against tax havens that hide hot funds and launder money, Chevenement said a
cybercrime convention being drawn up by the Strasbourg-based Council of
Europe should become a global treaty.
``The idea is to produce a global text so there cannot be 'digital havens' or
'Internet havens' where anyone planning some shady business could find the
facilities to do it,'' he said.
Countries also had to make clear to their citizens that the Internet was not
a lawless zone, he added.

``An adolescent should know that, even if he is very gifted in computer
science, the tricks he can play on the Internet could be serious crimes that
land him in prison. Internet isn't a toy anymore.''
The high-tech blitz that flashed around the world in an e-mail entitled
``ILOVEYOU'' this month showed how vulnerable computer systems are to attack
from anywhere. Unlike earlier viruses from the United States and Canada, the
``Love Bug'' was launched from the Philippines. The Paris conference, part of
longer-term efforts by developed countries to fight cybercrime, brought
together about 300 judges, police, diplomats and business leaders from the G8
states -- the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and
Canada plus Russia -- and private high-tech firms.

G8 leaders will take up its recommendations at their annual conference in
July in Okinawa.
Chevenement said he hoped countries such as India, China, South Africa,
Israel and the East European states would join in the effort. In his speech,
Chevenement highlighted the transatlantic gap by rejecting the idea of an
international ``cyberpolice'' supported by U.S. officials eager to crack down
quickly on computer crime.

``Nothing could be more wrong,'' he declared. ``Sovereign states can develop
the capacity to act, first at home and then in international cooperation.''

French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said in a message to the conference that
``freedom is the most precious gift the Internet brings us.''

All states should ``fight the digital divide'' between high-tech haves and
have-nots, he said, but at the same time ''restrain the excesses of an
unfettered freedom.''

Cybercrime has risen rapidly in recent years as the World Wide Web lives up
to its name.
A recent survey showed total losses to U.S. companies last year more than
doubled to over $266 million.

Chevenement said France registered more than 2,500 Internet-linked crimes
last year ``but that figure surely does not cover all big or small
infractions.''

Experts say high-profile attacks like the ones which paralyzed major
commercial sites like Yahoo! and Amazon.com in February are likely to
multiply as online services migrate to new platforms such as mobile phones.

 OTTAWA (CP) -- There's a massive government database that tracks the lives
of ordinary Canadians -- a Big Brother that wasn't supposed to exist, the
federal privacy commissioner revealed Tuesday.

 Bruce Phillips sounded an alarm bell in his annual report to Parliament,
warning Canadians that the Human Resources Department database is "tantamount
to a citizen profile" and vulnerable to misuse.

 The "extraordinarily detailed database" holds a dossier on almost every
person in Canada with as many as 2,000 pieces of information about each
person's education, marital status, ethnic origin, mobility, disabilities,
income tax, employment and social assistance history.
Concerns raised by privacy commissioner
-- Existence of federal government computer database with as many as 2,000
pieces of information about each Canadian.

 -- Government should be cautious about releasing confidential data from 1906
and 1911 census records because it could diminish confidence in government
promises.

 -- An updated Privacy Act, which applies to the federal public sector, is
needed. The act hasn't been revised for 20 years and is not as rigorous as
the new bill that applies to the private sector.

 -- Commissioner disappointed the government rejected a recommendation from a
Commons committee to put in law who may use information from a person's
Social Insurance Number and for what purposes.

 -- Commissioner expressed concern numerous projects to collect, share and
use personal health information are proceeding without action on promises to
protect the privacy of patients.



 It's all in a single, permanent database that tracks Canadians from cradle
to grave.

 "Successive privacy commissioners have assured Canadians that there was no
single federal government file or profile about them," Phillips said in his
report.

 "We were wrong -- or not right enough for comfort."

 The information on 33.7 million people, dead and alive, is taken from income
tax returns, child tax benefits, immigration and welfare files, the National
Training Program, Canadian Job Strategy, employment services, employment
insurance, job records and the social insurance master file.

 The only government department which regularly gathers such comprehensive
information -- Statistics Canada -- operates under strict laws with penalties
for those who misuse information.

 There are no similar laws regulating the use of the Human Resources database
and that "poses significant risks to our privacy," said Phillips.

 The database is "always open to misuse or abuse unless there are legislated,
legal restraints on its use," he said in an interview.

 While the Privacy Act allows collecting personal information for research,
this database raises concerns because it's so comprehensive.

 If the information was divided up, there would be "lower risk of
indiscriminate collection, unrelated uses and improper disclosures," Phillips
said in the report.

 The department, which has been attacked for months in the Commons for
mismanaging grants, says it's not breaking the law and it relies on staff
professionalism to prevent misuse of the database, created in 1985 and
continually updated.

 "All the information is secure, it's encrypted," said Human Resources
Minister Jane Stewart. The data is used to ensure government programs are
working, she said.

 Phillips is recommending a fixed shelf-life for data, penalties for misuse,
strict control on collection and legislative changes to set out the research
mandate of the database.

 Pippa Lawson of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre is worried that personal
information could be sold.

 "History has shown governments can go off the rails," she said in an
interview.

 "There's a huge market out there for personal information, for marketing
purposes in particular. We've already seen municipal and provincial
governments selling databases."

 Earlier this year, reports indicated Ontario's Transportation Ministry sold
personal information to private companies.

 A research database could also "be retrieved in unforeseen ways -- by
disabilities or ethnic origin, for example -- to the detriment of individual
rights," said Phillips, who noted the information is never purged.

 "Without an end, the temptation is to subject everyone to unrelenting
information surveillance. This database needs limits."

 The database is virtually invisible, although it's on a government database
list and the Human Resources Web site.

I find it interesting that AFTER the Pope has "forgiven" the Jews
and claimed that they were not responsible for the crucifixion of
Jesus, we have a wildly popular miniseries (not to mention the
claymation version), capable of displacing "Who Wants to be a
Millionaire" which portrays the Jews as responsible for demanding
the death of Jesus in spite of Pontius Pilate's disinterest in the
project.

Hmm..

I wonder just how long it will be before Jews are back in the ovens
(although the powers that be will be kept busy for some time with a
few other very large ethnic groups). They will keep stirring the pot

over, regarding the size, that the size of these emails have been very, very
small. You do suggest a good thought though, I can switch to my other
provider and see if the problem stops. If it does, I'll gladly offer profuse
apologies for bugging the list about it. However, this still would leave me
wondering why only CTRL emails (thus far) have caused the problem. Jim

 I also had this problem a few times.  It hasn't happened to me
 since I switched
 ISPs back in February.  I use Netscape under Win95.  It seemed to happen
 whenever someone emailed an article as an large attachment.  I
 wonder if it's
 the mailer.  Both BR and WS use AOL 5.0 for Windows.  I've also
 had problems
 with posts sent by MS Outlook on a Russian list.  The Cyrillic
 coding would come
 out garbled and freeze my Netscape.

One hopes that it would not sit well with anyone, but there is scant little you can do 
about it.  Remember the court ruling which said it was perfectly fine for police to 
scan your home with infrared scanners in order to detect plant lights used to grow 
pot, and that they need not have a warrant since this was not "unreasonable".  Well, 
it's unreasonable to me, since what would stop them from watching you, you would be 
visible, since you give off heat, and you having sex, or doing other private things 
would show up just fine on their little scanner.  Gotta love those police, just out to 
protect us, and the judges interpreting the ol' Constitution to make sure we don't 
have TOO MANY rights (since it is such a big responsibility they are doing us a favor 
after all.).

 contains Dextro Methorphan as well because it is similar to Ketamine in how

Dear Dano -- Thanks for the suggestion, --- I just had my windows and whole
computer reloaded a few months ago --- since which time I've had no problems
except this email freeze up business. ALso, the email freeze ups happened
before and after the reload -- or does "deep reloading mean something

This sounds like it is a mail reader problem or something to do with your ISP.  IF, 
however it starts to spread and others start ohave a problem with it then please let 
us know about it, otherwise please try to handle this off-list, okay?

 I also had this problem a few times.  It hasn't happened to me since I switched
 ISPs back in February.  I use Netscape under Win95.  It seemed to happen
 whenever someone emailed an article as an large attachment.  I wonder if it's
 the mailer.  Both BR and WS use AOL 5.0 for Windows.  I've also had problems
 with posts sent by MS Outlook on a Russian list.  The Cyrillic coding would come
 out garbled and freeze my Netscape.

I send this out to you with a sick feeling in my stomach. It’s the old
story of the main problem ultimately being “false opposition” – betrayal
from within. The report is filed with Newsmax by Jack Thompson.

I could be wrong, but a believe Jack Thompson, or his brother, is a
longtime crusader against computerized votefraud in Miami. Thompson
refers below to his efforts 13 years ago to stop Janet Reno.

In 1996 or 1992 I was on a radio program out of Florida via telephone.
During the breaks, I could hear the commercials. It was during election
season, and I heard an ad by a candidate named Thompson exposing the
unverifiable computerized elections in Miami, Florida.

Anyway, if anyone in Florida or in the Cuban American community can shed
any light on the below, it would be greatly appreciated. I have been
unsuccessful so far in contacting anyone in Miami who is a real player
in the unfolding events. My worse fears are coming to pass as portrayed
in the below Jack Thompson column, as carried on Newsmax.com – for
follow up on what former Judge Andrew Napolitano wrote in the Wall
Street Journal about the “tissue of lies” upon which the

Ten days ago Andrew Napolitano, former New Jersey State Supreme Court
Justice and constitutional law professor at Seton Hall, penned an
article for The Wall Street Journal making this point: The government
raid seizing Elian Gonzalez was built upon "a tissue of lies." Its
illegality provided a basis to challenge its results in the 11th Circuit
Court of Appeals on May 11.
Judge Napolitano also indicated that respected Miami lawyer Richard
Sharpstein (whom he mentioned and quoted by name) had just been brought
onto Elian's legal team to do just that.

NewsMax.com has reported in the last week that once it became clear to
Kendall Coffey, head of the legal team, that the focus would be and had
to be Reno's illegal acts and that his political benefactor, Reno, would
be embarrassed by the arguments, with substantial fall-out in the
Democratic circles in which Coffey travels, Sharpstein was told that his
lengthy brief, which was already prepared, would not be filed.

Sharpstein's rebuke by Coffey prompted this writer to write Coffey a
letter that was also provided to our readers at this news site (i.e.
newsmax), which prompted a face-to-face meeting Wednesday between this
writer and Armando Gutierrez, spokesman for the Miami relatives and
close friend of Kendall Coffey.

The meeting was not exactly a love-fest. As this writer entered the room
to meet him, Gutierrrez wheeled in his chair, before introductions could
be made ,and said: "You have written a letter very disrespectful of Mr.
Coffey.”

I said, "Nice to meet you. What in the letter is false?"

Gutierrez: "Kendall Coffey has been working very hard on this case.
Where were you five months ago when we were all trying to help this boy?
You are full of s---."

I: "I was raising my own son at the time, who is seven. And as to the
charge of my being disrespectful, let me note that you're the one using
four-letter words to describe me. But let me ask you and Kendall this:
Where were you guys 13 years ago when I was warning this city, and then
the nation, that Janet Reno was a person to be feared?

“I'll tell you where Kendall Coffey was in those 13 years. He was
raising money for Janet, taking the U.S. Attorney's job from her as a
payoff, and now he is afraid to criticize her even in a court of law.
Yes, Coffey is indeed working very hard on this case, but not in a way
to help this little boy."

Armando was somewhat startled by the response. He left the room saying
he had to make some calls and then called our host from his cell phone
(apparently he had left without saying goodbye) to let us in the room
know that he was setting up a meeting among all the lawyers as well as
the clients.

Finally, Richard Sharpstein would be allowed to meet the clients, his
clients, and explain what should be done to help Elian.

Not so. The meeting with the clients never happened. Coffey intervened,
allowing only a meeting among the lawyers, with no clients in

  Have you noticed that almost every "fresh" fruit and vegetable juice
you consume is no longer fresh, does not taste that good, and is
absent of most of its nutrient value? They look fresh! But they have
been pasteurized or irradiated under the mandates created by health-
department officials to eliminate microbes. Health officials are
pushing to mandate that all fresh produce be irradiated in the name
of food-safety. What does that mean to us as consumers?

  Let's take a look at a different  view on food-safety that will come
as a paradigm-shift for most of you. It is likely to change your
perspective on nature, the environment and life. . Hopefully, you
will develop a new trust and faith that relaxes and eliminates fears
that have been conditioned into most of us since birth, extolled by
theorists to academics, and on to the media and government.

The birth of food-safety.
  Around 1890 Louis Pasteur made it popular to blame molds and
bacteria for disease because he proved that heat-processing slowed
food-spoilage and lengthened shelf-life. This concept became an
economic boon for the food-industry. During the following century,
as a direct result, the prevailing medical theory was that bacteria and
viruses were the cause of disease.

  Since then, besides pasteurization other methods have been
developed to annihilate microbes in food. These methods include
irradiation, freezing, chemical additives and washes, such as
ascorbic acid, chlorine and hydrogen peroxide. All of these
processes slow food-spoilage for particular foods and give them
false appearances of freshness.

  Now, over a century later, we continually wage an immeasurable
war against bacteria and viruses in our kitchens, bedrooms,
bathrooms, restaurants, schools, supermarkets, clinics, hospitals,
pharmacies, and inside and outside of our bodies. Naming only a
few, we use antibacterial mouth-washes, soaps, douches. air-
fresheners, dish cloths, towels, diapers, treated toys, and rugs.

  It's time to evaluate the results and cost of this continual, and
continually escalating war.

  The estimated cost for antibacterial products per household is
$3,000 per year. In the battle against bacteria, federal, state and
county agencies in the U.S.A. spend an estimated 4 trillion dollars
per year (estimates I gained from Center for Disease Control,
federal and county figures published currently on the internet).
That's approximately an astounding $10,000 for every American
household. This figure, combined with the average expenditure per
household, raises the total household expenditure for social bacterial
warfare to $13,000 yearly. Many families could pay their mortgages
in a few years with that money.

What is food-safety?
  In the broadest sense, it is the ideal that food is not only health-
giving but also harmless. To health-officials it means food without
"pathogens" (def: any agent capable of producing disease).

Does food have health-giving properties?
  Many scientists, famous and not, have proved that vitamins and
enzymes are paramount to proper bodily functions and good health,
and that deficiencies manifest in diseases.

Does using antibacterial technologies interfere with the health-
giving properties of food?
  Research throughout the world shows that heat-treatment of food
alters, damages, or destroys many vitamins at the standard
pasteurization-temperature of 161° F. (65° C.). Also that all
enzymes are destroyed at 122° F. (50° C.). Furthermore, the actual
temperature that cripples some vitamins and enzymes is as low as
104° F. (39° C.) The loss of mineral-utilization due to cauterization
(burn-sealed) by heat-treatment is significant. Many scientists have
proved that heat-processing renders toxins from proteins and fats in
food, such as heterocyclic amines (caustic compound) and lipid
peroxides (oxidizing compound), which have been observed to
cause cancer in laboratory animals. Therefore pasteurization can be
said to actually destroy many of the health-giving properties of
food.

  Research demonstrates that exposing food to high intensity gamma
radiation affects the activity of key enzymes and causes the
depletion of radiation-sensitive essential nutrients such as: the amino
acids l-cysteine, l-histidine, and l-tryptophan. Other nutrients such as
vitamins B1, B 2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, vitamin C, E, K; the
omega-3, 6 and 9 unsaturated essential fatty acids are affected.
Some irradiated minerals in food actually become toxically
radioactive. Radiation destroys the health-giving properties of food
as well as its use being a cause of public hazard.

  My laboratory and practical experiments proved that ascorbic acid
can cause irritability and depression. The lab-technician with whom

Dear Mr. Neal:
  
I
  want you to know that I am deeply concerned about the failure of President
  Bill Clinton, who is an active member of the Arkansas State Bar, to
  live up to the letter and intent of the U.S. Constitution and the laws
  of our nation. 
In
  light of the Independent Counsel’s Report and the contempt of court
  ruling by Judge Susan Webber Wright, I urge your committee to investigate
  the outrageous conduct of lawyer Bill Clinton. Lying under oath in a
  court of law and encouraging others to do the same are serious allegations
  which undermine the public trust in our system of laws and in the legal
  profession. 
Please
  make every effort to quickly and fully examine the charges in the Southeastern
  Legal Foundation complaint and begin the procedures needed to remove
  Bill Clinton from the rolls of the Arkansas State Bar.
