Jim Getty's BOF has been for me one of the most instructive ones at Debconf and I wasn't there by hazard - Who are interested to develop tailored Debian Edu for OLPC-machines? I think that at least the D-I (D-I==Debian Installer for people outside Debian) team should have some of its members getting a close attention on that OLPC project and, given that we find someone interested, one member of the D-I team should get the specific job of being responsible for all actions/changes/developments done for the installer to properly run on OLPC hardware. Can someone please speak with Frans, and ask him to stop humiliating me ?
Hi, ... This is not going to work, i have played nice, as Christian noted on saturday during the meeting, but over this past week, i got at least 4 different humiliation attempts from Frans, which are not waranted. I don't want to make a mess about this again, but this is not going to work under these conditions. Frans, if you want respect from your team members, humiliating them at each minor occasion is not going to do it, sorry, and respect has to be earned, not beated in like you are trying to do. Anthony, you said last week that you would try to mediate this issue again, and solve it in such a way satisfactory to all, but Frans is putting evident bad faith in this, and i don't see why i should take this longer. I did nothing technically wrong, that he needs to review all my changes, even those he has no clue about, and on the social side, he is clearly as much to blame than me. So, i will not make a long issue about this, i think i raised the issue enough last time, but i am trying to do productive work, and Frans is deliberately trying to stop me on this, and everyone should know about this. Bug#375505: yaboot-installer: generated yaboot.conf is broken on IBM POWER hardware ...
Package: yaboot-installer Version: generated yaboot.conf is broken on IBM POWER hardware ... Severity: important When installing on IBM JS21 blades, as well as on the augsbourg quad-power5 machines and p505 boxes, the install failed on yaboot-installer. After investigation, three issues appeared : 1) There was a device= line, with nothing behind it, which yaboot failed to parse at boot time, and thus rejected the config file or entries. The device = line is not really necessary, since yaboot is able to recognize the device from the OF chosen nodes. Removing this line by hand worked just fine. 2) the magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot, and this is the one which caused yaboot-installer to fail. ybin doesn't support a magicboot line with a raw install, that is in a PReP boot partition, as is used on IBM POWER. Removing this line by hand eliminated that problem. 3) These machines use a virtual serial console, namely /dev/hvc* (hvc0 on the blade center, but hvc1 on the augsbourg virtual partition). yaboot-installer needs to add the correct console=hvc* into the append line, in order to get a console after the reboot. Here's some more hopefully constructive feedback. Some day I'd like to be able to recommend Linux to my mother-in-law :-) No, in all my wanderings I didn't find that page. It's for the development version, so maybe I shouldn't expect it to be very friendly, but it would really help someone like me if at the top of the page it had a brief description of what the page and/or Installation Guide was all about -- one or two sentences, so we'd know whether we found what we were looking for, or should move on and keep looking. Something like The Installation Guide provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for downloading and installing Debian. It comes in different flavors for each architecture, release, and language. As it is, the description at the top of the page seems more suited for people who already know what the Installation Guide is, and quickly jumps into status and changes, which may be what developers want to see, but it doesn't give much indication about whether someone like me has come to the right page. Now, you could say that I shouldn't be installing testing unless I know what I'm doing and can deal with things like this, but for someone wandering through the site, even for someone like me who's been running Linux for 13 years and Debian for 8 (although I've run off my unstable installs, from floppy/network, for the last 6 years so I haven't been to the site to pick up a new distro for a while), anyway, for someone wandering through, it's hard to tell whether we need to deal with things, or whether we've found the cookbook, or whether we need to keep looking, or whether we maybe need to use the Ubuntu install although I'd prefer raw Debian. I eventually installed the stable version. I still wasn't sure whether installing from the binary-1 CD was correct, but the install itself went reasonably enough, and after fixing the resolution of my X server, the system is about 95% working and I'm using it right now. Re: RFC: partman-auto-crypto
On Sun, Jun 25, 2006 at 05:05:01PM +0200, Max Vozeler wrote: Last night I completed two test installs using the SVN version (r38313) and both worked flawlessly. One was using the All in one partition scheme, the other the /home, /usr, /var, /tmp scheme. The system was a VMware instance with one 2GB virtual SCSI disk attached. Only one thing surprised me: The /boot partition ended up with a size of ~250 MB when using the All in one scheme, which seems very large. Maybe this is not specific to crypto though, and it doesn't seem very important. This is from the partman-auto-lvm scheme, there is already a bug filed against partman-lvm which mentions this (#342234, which is quite messy, I'll file a separate wishlist report against partman-auto-lvm). Have you had a chance to test on a system with multiple disks attached yet? Yes, it makes no difference since partman-auto-crypto, like all partman-auto packages only support a single disk to work on. 1) Some comments exceed 80 characters. This makes it a bit ugly to read on normal terminals. I've fixed the ones that are in the code I've added, I wont change the code I haven't changed since it'll make it harder to share common parts later. 2) You can drop Standards-Version from debian/control. It does not apply to pure-udeb packages. Done 3) Please add some information about authorship of the code to debian/copyright. I realize this is tricky as other partman-* packages are not very clear on copyright. It would already help to say which code -auto-crypto is derived from and which parts you hold copyright on. Done 4) Some comments that originate from -auto-lvm no longer match the code, which is a bit confusing. e.g. This variable will be used.. zero it in automatically_partition/ some_device_crypto/do_option. It would help maintainability if you could go through all comments and check whether they still make sense. I've removed that comment, couldn't find any other 5) Minor: There is modprobe $foo 2/dev/null 21 || true in automatically_partition/.../do_option. This is not really important, but it seems we either a) expect modprobe can fail - in this case perhaps wrap it in log-output? Or we expect it not to fail, which means the || true could be dropped. Also the comment there, Be sure modules are loaded is not really true if we don't check the return code of modprobe. /nitpick Same here as for the first note, I won't change the code which is suitable to be shared later. There are currently two items on the todo list: o Support loop-AES as well as dm-crypt (this mostly depends on partman-crypto getting encrypted-root-via-loop-AES support) I'm hoping to work on this after my vacation (ie. in about two weeks time). For now I actually think we can consider the non- availability of loop-AES support an advantage, as we don't have to think about how to present the choice of crypto system to users in a non-confusing way. :-) Yes, considering that we just changed the default in partman-crypto to be dm-crypt, perhaps we shouldn't even offer the choice between the two in partman-auto-crypto... None of these items seem to be a reason to postpone the use of partman-auto-crypto, and code sharing is hard to implement before both packages are in the source tree proper. I agree and would like to add my support for moving the partman-auto-crypto package to trunk/. Cool, and thanks for the review. Bug#342234: summarizing the reported problems
Ok, let's summarize the issues reported in the provided links: Already fixed = o Partman allows you to modify a partition which is already allocated as a lvm PV (this has been fixed and the partition will now be locked against changes) o Some LVs are not assigned a filesystem type (this has been fixed) In other bug reports o Boot partition created was 256Mb which seems a bit big (bug #375544) o Creating a LV called lv-var/log failed (this is a limitation in the naming of lv devices, see bug #375161) o Resizing a LVM PV doesn't work (bug #375545) o Resizing a LVM LV doesn't work (bug #375545) o The failure message upon resizing was unhelpful (bug #375546) Not fixable/reproduceable = o The boot partition was 16Mb after being told to create a 20Mb partition (this is a limitation of how disks are paritioned in terms of cylinders and not fixable) o Resizing the boot partition to 20Mb failed (the help text now says that 20.2Mb is the smallest partition size allowed) but resizing to 50Mb and then to 20Mb worked (I can't reproduce this, resizing to 21Mb directly worked for me). As all open issues in this report is already reported as separate bugs, I'll close this one in a week or two unless someone objects. Kind regards, David Härdeman

Package: busybox-static Severity: normal Hi, when I try to install busybox-static, then the already installed package busybox gets removed. This is ok. But: all packages depending on busybox also get removed (e.g. initramfs-tools) - even if this should not be necessary - right? One solution would - of course - to change the dependencies of initramfs-tools (and other packages). But as busybox-static really has the same features as busybox, a Provides entry should be more appropriate. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: tasksel Version: 2.28 Severity: normal Tags: patch The attached patch modifies existing language and language.desktop files with the following rationales: -all currently existing kde-i18n-* and koffice-i18n-*packages are added to language-desktop (this will localize KDE which is installed by the desktop task) -all currently existing myspell-* packages are added to language-desktop (myspell is used as spellchecking basis for openoffice programs which are installed by the desktop task) -all currently existing gimp-help-*, mozilla-firefox-locale-* and openoffice.org-l10n-* packages are added to language-desktop (gimp, mozilla-firefox and openoffice.org are installed by the desktop task) -all currently existing aspell-* packages are added to language When the relevant task does not exist yet, it is then created with the newly added package(s) alone. When this leads to a language-desktop task to be created *WITHOUT* existing language task, this language-desktop task then depends only on desktop and however uses Test-lang: code. This avoids adding fake language tasks. (this is slightly different from what I initially proposed in -boot) Besides this language-env is removed for languages it does not support. The rationale for this is having small tasks ready for all future supported languages as well as tasks which could be easy to install from aptitude even for languages we do not support in D-I. I will then later setup some automation to periodically check for new packages in the above lists so that we can maintain these language tasks up-to-date. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-1-686 Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to fr_FR.UTF-8) Versions of packages tasksel depends on: ii aptitude 0.2.15.9-6 terminal-based apt frontend ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.58 Debian configuration management sy ii laptop-detect 0.12.1 attempt to detect a laptop ii liblocale-gettext-perl1.05-1 Using libc functions for internati tasksel recommends no packages. diff -Nru tasks.old/afrikaans-desktop tasks/afrikaans-desktop --- tasks.old/afrikaans-desktop 1970-01-01 01:00:00.0 +0100 +++ tasks/afrikaans-desktop 2005-08-26 23:01:31.0 +0200 @@ -0,0 +1,13 @@ +Task: afrikaans-desktop +Depends: desktop +Section: l10n +Test-lang: af +Description: Afrikaans desktop + This task localises the desktop in Afrikaans. +Key: +Packages: task-fields +Packages-list: + mozilla-firefox-locale-af-za + openoffice.org-l10n-af + kde-i18n-af + koffice-i18n-af diff -Nru tasks.old/albanian-desktop tasks/albanian-desktop --- tasks.old/albanian-desktop 1970-01-01 01:00:00.0 +0100 +++ tasks/albanian-desktop 2005-08-26 23:01:36.0 +0200 @@ -0,0 +1,10 @@ +Task: albanian-desktop +Depends: desktop +Section: l10n +Test-lang: sq +Description: Albanian desktop + This task localises the desktop in Albanian. +Key: +Packages: task-fields +Packages-list: + mozilla-firefox-locale-sq-al diff -Nru tasks.old/arabic tasks/arabic --- tasks.old/arabic2005-08-26 20:14:25.0 +0200 +++ tasks/arabic2005-08-26 19:57:57.0 +0200 @@ -6,8 +6,7 @@ documentation that makes it easier for Arabic speakers to use Debian. KDE is installed because I chose the Desktop task. However, it does not install kde-i18n-fi, although I chose country and language as Finland and finnish. The only language available in KDE is english. Gnome works in finnish. Bug: X Window keyboard is USA. Finnish keyboard works in console, but X Window uses USA keyboard. X Window configuration went OK, except it did not ask what keyboard I want. I used the default level for questions. These lines are in /etc/X11/XF86config-4: Option XkbRules xfree86 Option XkbModel pc104 Option XkbLayout us For finnish keyboards, there should be pc105 and fi. Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments and ideas you had during the initial install. Other finnish users have wanted fi_FI.utf8 as default finnish locale. I use that too, but change the locale with dpkg-reconfigure locales. Some typos and bad wording in finnish texts, but I'm one of the finnish translators so those I have to fix myself. There was one user who specifically says the finnish translation is good. PS Bug: The gdm login screen was in finnish and even after a reboot I'm almost sure it was in

Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: tasksel Version: 2.44 Severity: wishlist Hardinfo is both a gtk2 and text program that shows all the hardware on the system. The gtk2 version is placed under system tools menu in Gnome, as is very slick, simple and effective. I find it easier to understand, and better than ubuntu's equivalent. A gui program like this is very important in the desktop-environment task, I think, because the #1 question users have when some hardware isn't working is, but what hardware do I have?. Using this program, they don't have to learn the more exoteric lspci and lsusb commands. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (600, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-k7 Locale: LANG=pt_PT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=pt_PT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages tasksel depends on: ii aptitude 0.4.1-1terminal-based apt frontend ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.1 Debian configuration management sy ii laptop-detect 0.12.1 attempt to detect a laptop ii liblocale-gettext-perl1.05-1 Using libc functions for internati tasksel recommends no packages. -- debconf information: tasksel/title: tasksel/first: tasksel/tasks: ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: tasksel Source-Version: 2.49 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of tasksel, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: tasksel-data_2.49_all.deb to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel-data_2.49_all.deb tasksel_2.49.dsc to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.49.dsc tasksel_2.49.tar.gz to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.49.tar.gz tasksel_2.49_all.deb to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.49_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached.
