Bug#284090: gnome-session: Also happens here with 2.12
Le mardi 28 mars 2006 à 22:54 +0200, Manuel Bilderbeek a écrit : Package: gnome-session Version: 2.12.0-4 Followup-For: Bug #284090 I also have this problem after a fresh Debian etch beta 2 installation and then doing the following: 1) login 2) open 3 (this is what I did, didn't try for another amount) gnome-terminals 3) log out, with Save Session on 4) log in What then happens is that the login happens normally, but the splash screen 'hangs' at the GNOME terminal 'phase'. After clicking it, it's gone again indeed, but that's a annoying. Waiting about 1 minute also makes the splash screen disappear. And indeed, as reported eariler, one cannot directly log out after logging in, while the splash screen is there (or was just clicked away). A certain time out needs to be awaited. Does it still happen with gnome-session 2.14 ? I think there are issues with registering multiple terminals to the session, but this bug shouldn't occur anymore. Bug#402179: tar: FTBFS: race condition in test-suite
This bug seems to only occur for the posix format tar archives. It's repeatable outside the tar test suite by doing: #!/bin/sh export TAR_OPTIONS=-H posix --pax-option=exthdr.name=%d/PaxHeaders/%f echo hello file1 echo goodbye file2 while :; do tar cf archive.1 file1 file2 tar cfT archive.2 /dev/null tar rf archive.2 file1 tar rf archive.2 file2 if cmp archive.1 archive.2 /dev/null; then echo -n . else echo -n + fi done The output should be all dots if the assumptions of the test are correct, but I get: +...+..+ ..++.++. .+.. ...+ .+.. ...+ .+.+ Which is to say it fails about 3% of the time on my system (stable over about 2000 iterations). I'd say that warrants downgrading this bug from serious. The fundamental problem seems to be that the POSIX format tarballs include the atime of the files in the archive (which may change between adding the file to the first archive and the second), and the mtime of the archive itself (which likewise may change). I don't see any way to work around that, though -- --atime-preserve helps (by eliminating the atimes), but that still leaves it failing around 1.7% of the time (when the mtimes don't match, presumably). If the test is run on a filesystem that preserves timestamps to the nanosecond (or possibly even the microsecond?), this test will always fail. Cheers, aj signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Severity: serious why? I checked into debian-policy 10.1 : http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html For this reason, it is recommended to support the standardized environment variable DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS is a recommendation of policy, not a requirement. I also found out that debug is not in the list of options. See http://bugs.debian.org/157131 I will update that to 'noopt' admitedly, but that's not wrt the name of the option, It's just that thtis is the sole way to have a debug build of mplayer, that is more than useful to generate useful backtraces and debug informations. you can feel free to consider this bug is not worth investigating, but I may also consider that generating useful backtraces for you is not worh the effort, and for the next bugs I'll just send stupid mails mplayer segfaults on foo and let you deal with that alone. I do not care about the debug version a lot, I just wanted one with debug symbols unstripped. But you're correct, you do not support nostrip/noopt at all, and that's RC ! good catch. attach is the relevant build log part. the build was done on an x86 box (not the one I report the bug from). I cannot rerpoduce this (and I tried on AMD64) maybe because, If you had read the bug report, you would have seen that the machine I did the report from was not the machine I built the package on. I did a build of the last package, with an x86 box. not an amd64. givent that it's a register allocation failure it seems, that's no wonder it works on amd64 that has plenty of'em available. -- ·O· Pierre Habouzit ··O[EMAIL PROTECTED] OOOhttp://www.madism.org pgpfpHpwS4hwC.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#402949: missing dependency against lsb-base
Package: wifi-radar Severity: serious Tags: patch Hi dude How is your trainee program going, hope you are doing well :) I am sorry, but I am filling a serious bug against your package, because it misses a dependency against lsb-base. Bug#325551: How to handle filename conflict aleph (Packages aleph, tetex-bin, texlive-bin)?
From Paul's comments, it seems to me that there is no need for the current Aleph it's been replaced, and it's three years old. I have no opinion about whether it ought to be dropped from Debian. Paul also explains that AFNIX replaced Aleph, and should not be thought of as just a new version with a name change. I had misunderstood. Given his explanation, we should think of AFNIX and Alpha as two different entities I think. That means that Paul should continue with AFNIX, I think, and continue learning; there isn't any hue and cry I know of asking for AFNIX to be in Debian right away, so I see no reason he shouldn't just continue as he has been. This however does not solve the name clash with Aleph. So I think there are three possibilities (repeating here what Frank already said somewhat): 1) Leave things alone, and ignore the problem. This, it seems to me, requires some kind of go-ahead from the release team. 2) Drop aleph. This would be warranted if it were of no use any longer, or if it were buggy. But the *only* bug against Aleph is the name clash with TeX, so there is no independent reason to prefer this solution. The question remains, however, whether the current version has any use, and I simply don't know the answer to that. If it does, then, as I said, I'm happy to maintain it. 3) Retain aleph, and change the name of the binary in one package or the other. If we don't do (2), and the release team is not happy with (1), then this is obviously the right course. I don't care at all which program's name is changed or what it's changed to. Ralf G. R. Bergs wrote: Package: sqwebmail Version: 0.47-4sarge5 Severity: wishlist I feel that choosing to build with auto-renaming the sent messages folder is undesirable, because hardly anyone deliberately would organize their sent messages this way. People who use IMAP *and* webmail have a strange mixture of sent messages in the flat sent folder, plus the messages in the expanded folder structure SqWebMail creates, like: Sent 2006 11-Nov So, could you please build with --disable-autorenamesent enabled in the future? Bug#401570: Processed: Re: Bug#401570: libswt3.2-gtk-jni: apt-get upgrade fails
On 12/12/06, Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ... I don't see any conflicts between the -java packages, only the -jni packages. I guess the -jni packages do need to conflict with each other then, if they have file conflicts. Thank you for bringing to my attention that only the -jni packages conflict. The fundamental reason the two packages conflict is that they provide exactly the same libraries. So, to close bug #376672 (libswt-gtk-3.1-java conflicts libswt3.1-gtk-java) it occurred to me that libswt-gtk-3.1-java could depend on libswt-gtk-3.2-jni | libswt3.2-gtk-jni. The catch is that both JNI libraries are somewhat misnamed, because version 3.2-1 of both packages provided the soname libswt-gtk-3232.so, whereas version 3.2.1-1 of the packages provide the soname libswt-gtk-3235.so. If 3.2.2-1 is also released under the package name libswt3.2-gtk-jni (likely), it will not be suitable to provide the needed dependency (namely, libswt-gtk-3235.so). So, I need to depend as an alternative on libswt3.2-gtk-jni ( 3.2.1 3.2.2). How do I accomplish this? So far I have... Package: libswt-gtk-3.2-java Depends: libswt-gtk-3.2-jni (= ${binary:Version}) | libswt3.2-gtk-jni ( 3.2.1) One solution would be for both libswt-gtk-3.2-jni and libswt3.2-gtk-jni to provide a pseudo-package libswt-gtk-3235-jni and depend on that. The only downside is that both SWT packages have to be modified to support this mechanism. Cheers, Shaun -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Severity: serious why? I checked into debian-policy 10.1 : http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html For this reason, it is recommended to support the standardized environment variable DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS is a recommendation of policy, not a requirement. I also found out that debug is not in the list of options. See http://bugs.debian.org/157131 I will update that to 'noopt' admitedly, but that's not wrt the name of the option, It's just that thtis is the sole way to have a debug build of mplayer, that is more than useful to generate useful backtraces and debug informations. sole way? did you try compiling it with '-g' instead of '-g3' ? if you have a amd64 machine handy , did you try debugging on it? you can feel free to consider this bug is not worth investigating, but I never said that I actually immediatly started compilation of a debug compilation takes 20minutes after 20minutes, I sent you a some gdm info , and proposed a quick hack to avoid any security risk then you come pissing me off saying that I do not want to address your bug I may also consider that generating useful backtraces for you is not worh the effort, and for the next bugs I'll just send stupid mails mplayer segfaults on foo and let you deal with that alone. I just downgraded this bug because it is not a requirement of the policy I do not care about the debug version a lot, I just wanted one with debug symbols unstripped. But you're correct, you do not support nostrip/noopt at all, and that's RC ! good catch. I do care about debugging issues. no it is not RC. RC is what the policy mandates, not what the policy recommends. attach is the relevant build log part. the build was done on an x86 box (not the one I report the bug from). I cannot rerpoduce this (and I tried on AMD64) maybe because, If you had read the bug report, you would have seen that the machine I did the report from was not the machine I built the package on. I did a build of the last package, with an x86 box. not an amd64. givent that it's a register allocation failure it seems, that's no wonder it works on amd64 that has plenty of'em available. this said, I still cannot reproduce it . So , please give me some time to find a way to reproduce it. And that means tomorrow evening. I cannot access an etch/i386 today a.
Bug#393079: savedefault still a problem on RAID systems
Hello, just to add to the mail from Otavio on Dec 5th: this is still a problem with the current etch version of grub, haven't tested sid's version. My setup: 2 HDDs, 3 partitions each sd[ab][123], 3 RAID1-Arrays md[012], root-Filesystem and also /boot on /dev/md1. Using title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-3-k7 root(hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-k7 root=/dev/md1 ro md=1,/dev/sda2,/dev/sdb2 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-3-k7 the system boots fine, if I add a savedefault entry below the initrd line (as update-grub does by default), I get Error 15: file not found. Which is especially fun if this is a remote system where I have means to interactively edit grub's menu at boot time. ;) While trying to figure out the problem, I did the whole setup once more in a VMware-Installation, same result: savedefault breaks the boot process, without it I can boot just fine. So I guess it's not really hardware dependend. Kind regards Wolfgang Karall -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is because sympa processes run as sympa user. The configuration process itself suffers this problem reporting errors probably due to this. In fact '/etc/sympa/data_structure.version' is owned by root and this make the configuration process fail. Moreover the entire '/usr/lib/sympa/' directory is owned (according with postinst script) by root. I fixed setting up user and group to sympa:sympa on that subtree. /usr/lib/sympa is owned by root on purpose, the data directories for sympa are within /var. Bug#379564: How to handle filename conflict aleph (Packages aleph, tetex-bin, texlive-bin)?
Thomas Bushnell BSG [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 1) Leave things alone, and ignore the problem. I don't know an answer, either - but popcon gives some hints: 18170 aleph-emacs 23 0 0 023 (Debian Qa Group) 21858 aleph-doc 12 0 0 012 (Debian Qa Group) 30097 aleph 3 1 2 0 0 (Debian Qa Group) 37868 aleph-dev 1 0 1 0 0 (Debian Qa Group) the 3's are the area of the not in sid packages, in other words leftovers that have never been upgraded or removed. That's not a strong argument to keep it... 3) Retain aleph, and change the name of the binary in one package or the other. If we don't do (2), and the release team is not happy with (1), then this is obviously the right course. I don't care at all which program's name is changed or what it's changed to. What are the pros and cons? I'm against changing TeX's aleph. It would be against the upstream decision. And knowing the information Paul gave, I suggest not to rename to afnix, but to something like aleph-runtime or similar. Today linux provides several governors, in particular powersave, performance and ondemand. Bug#402953: tetex-doc: Wrong section of doc-base registration

As there is another section Tex it should probably go there. Are you sure? On my system, the only package registering to TeX was tetex-bin, and considered this a bug, because the doc-base documentation says , | Section | | Section where the document belongs; this should follow the | sections outlined in The Debian Menu sub-policy. ` I think this is a bad decision, because documentation for non-menu things won't fit in well there. But if we have to choose, Text is the proper place for TeX things, I guess. On the other hand, it's not uncommon in Debian to change things by just doing it differently, so we could as well use TeX. Bug#397945: File type detection is broken and annoying (cannot open FOO)
reassign 397945 shared-mime-info retitle 397945 Javascript code misidentified as C code thanks Le vendredi 10 novembre 2006 à 11:07 -0500, Anthony DeRobertis a écrit : Routinely I get dialogs that read along the lines of: Cannot open FOO.js The filename FOO.js indicates that this file is of type JavaScript program. The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type C source code. If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system. Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for C source code, then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file. This is not the most absurd one I've gotten. Once it decided that a WAV file — that's right, a binary file — is plain text! And then refused to play it... 1. This file doesn't look like C code, at least not any more than any other JavaScript code. Currently, it is available on the web at http://asurvey.net/ccsfagent/media/survey.js. 2. It might present a security risk to the system about as much as, say, a meteor. A meteor could hit the system. A C file named FOO.js is probably no more likely to present a security risk when passed to gvim. 3. The suggestion to rename it is, of course, silly because it's been misidentified. 4. The suggestion to use Open With is silly because you have to do that each and every time; there is no way to say no, you idiotic nautilus, you're wrong, it's a damned javascript file, shut up. If you have both /dev/bus/usb and /proc/bus/usb that is a bug in your system config and can trigger this. udev will start two processes, one tries the /dev/bus/usb device, one tries the /proc/bus/usb device, and the one who can claim the interface wins. remove either /dev/bus/usb or /proc/bus/usb or edit the openct udev script in /lib/udev to ignore requests for one of those two. but for most users it is not important at all which reader has their smart card (e.g. if you use opensc-pkcs#11 and the application simply looks at all slots), so this is a minor problem from my point of view. still for low level tools like openct-tool, opensc-took, pkcs15-init etc. you need to enter the reader number, so it might be annoying. This is an annoyance because my ssh-agent gets confused across unplug/replugs when the card changes identifiers, and i have to reload the keys for it. Bug#400624: dsniff: urlsnarf should sanitize sniffed requests
severity 400624 important thanks Since urlsnarf is usually used on a terminal to have a look at requested URLs in real-time, a malicious attacker could use requests with escape sequences to execute arbitrary code. By this reasoning, cat would have a grave bug for allowing users to send untrusted files to the terminal without escaping. If a terminal can be exploited to cause arbitrary code execution through control sequences in a file being displayed, we should consider this a bug in the terminal. I don't see any reason that dsniff should be picked on here just because the untrusted data it's displaying comes directly from the network. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Package: xen-utils-common Version: 3.0.3-0-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch When shutting down xen domains with '/etc/init.d/xendomains stop' most of the time not all domains are stopped when the script finishes. I suspect this happens when xen is busy (e.g. with shutting down domains). I have patched xendomains with a wrapper around 'xm list', in order to retry when it returns 'Usage ...' instead of the normal list of running domains. Bug#402975: debian-policy: Introduce a requirement for internationalisation of debconf templates
Package: debian-policy Version: 3.7.2.2 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch This should probably have been done for a long time but better late than never. The gettext-based system for debconf templates internationalisation is now mature enough (it appeared immediately after the release of woody). The i18n contributors have made big efforts last years to enforce i18n using gettext for debconf templates and all packages which lack this feature have been provided (and are still provided) with a patch to help their maintainers doing the switch to po-debconf. So, I think it's now time to enforce this and do this as soon as possible in the etch-lenny release cycle. Attached is a first draft of a patch that would turn the use of a gettext-based system in packages which use debconf into a requirement. I'm perfectly aware that this introduces a must without doing it a should before, which is probably not very common practice. However, given the low impact of this change after two NMU campaigns on existing packages to make them switch to po-debconf, this would indeed be possible, in my opinion. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-2-686 Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to fr_FR.UTF-8) -- no debconf information --- policy.sgml.old 2006-12-13 22:24:05.534361649 +0100 +++ policy.sgml 2006-12-13 22:26:52.159683953 +0100 @@ -1221,6 +1221,13 @@ /p p + Packages which use the Debian Configuration management + specification must allow for translation of their messages + by using a gettext-based system such as the one provided by + the packagepo-debconf/package package. + /p + + p Packages should try to minimize the amount of prompting they need to do, and they should ensure that the user will only ever be asked each question once. It might be a bit annoying because when you left-button click over a file the 'Open with' menu shows a lot of apps to do this task, if you have installed many packages that can handle this file format. To reproduce this bug follow this steps: - Left click over a file, let's say an MP3 file - Select 'Properties' - Go to the 'Open with' tab - The 'Remove' button is disabled This button should only be disabled if there's only one program to open the file.
