The code below compiles without any error using the gcc. Trying to compile this code as C++ code using the g++ always fails because the compiler always tries to use the GNU version of strerror_r() that returns an char* instead of an int. Trying to define _XOPEN_SOURCE=600 does not change anything. The GNU version is used because _GNU_SOURCE is defined. It is defined unconditionally by g++. -- .''`. Bug#436267: stuck at 2.6.21
I'm just a regular Debian user who long ago built my own kernels (for a forgotten reason) and ran into headaches getting out of sync with the official config, so for the past several years I've been using the pre-built Debian kernel images, and generally been happier. But now I have a DV video camera and the only way I know to get the data off the tapes is with dvgrab, which works on 2.6.21 and not on any later Debian kernel image (so far). I normally track the testing release, but now I'm stuck at 2.6.21 until a later release works with dvgrab. AMC -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#430449: Still seeing this one
Followup to debian bug 430449: Denyhosts on etch (2.6-1etch1) Just added a deny plugin last week. Denyhosts added one new IP but the deny plugin received 58 IPs. Note that 57 of these IPs ARE present in /etc/hosts.deny from before - but it was not the entire list - have been running denyhosts for a long time without the plugin - I have 13645 blocked hosts in total. Oddly - the single IP that is missing from the deny list is 127.0.0.1 - which is also in the allowed-hosts file - but was once blocked (the very first day I installed denyhosts). This made me wonder if perhaps the 58 IPs were ones that my system had blocked over time - the 13645 are probably mostly from the denyhosts sync. However - I seem to have blocked 248 hosts directly (going from looking at the number of IPs in the various /var/lib/hosts-* files). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Has it been used as part of a pseudo-hardware RAID set up from the BIOS maybe? Does the command line tool 'parted' show the partitions and what exactly does 'fdisk' show. Bug#491149: initramfs-tools: panic() won't print error message
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.92e Severity: normal Tags: patch If the panic() function is invoked it should print a message but it does not because stdout is not connected to the console. The fix is easy: just add a /dev/console to the echo command. I attach a patch, but it's probably easier to fix by hand. Consider changing echo $@ /dev/console to echo $@ /dev/console (I don't know if it's a good idea, but it looks better; if you don't want to protect $@ for whatever reason, $* would be philosophically better). Bug#491151: Handle webmin address using SSL by default
Package: squid Version: 2.7.STABLE2-2 Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertag: debian-edu In Debian Edu, we do some modification to the default squid.conf file to get it working in our environment. It would be great if the generic part of our changes would be included by default in squid for Lenny. This BTS report is about one of these changes. A long time ago, we discovered that the default squid configuration did not work well as an APT proxy. The cached object size was too small, thus not caching some of the big packages, and the Release and Package file did not stay too long in the cache. These are the options we configure to do this: maximum_object_size 20480 KB refresh_pattern (Release|Package(.gz)*)$ 0 20% 2880 I am not absolutely sure the setting still make sense, but if it does, please change the default squid configuration to a change to make squid work better as an APT cache. Procedural languages are used to write functions which can be called in database queries. This package was removed from Debian (see #228074, which can not be reopened because it is archived). The reason that it is RC buggy) is void because #461995 took me 1 Minute to fix (well, you can blame me for not having this done before the removal - the package was just not on my focus). The other reason few users is probably right considering popcon, but this as the only reason to remove a package is not enough. I think upgradebility from Etch to Lenny is a much higher value. Bug#452835: IPv6 in distccd
Version: 2.18.3-7.1 Hello, It seems that there is some IPv6 support in distcc, but it is broken and renders the program unusable if it is used. If no bind address is specified using --listen then distccd binds to all interfaces (IPv4 and IPv6) quite happily. However any connections coming in over IPv6 are rejected, and the following appears in the logfile: distccd[7173] (dcc_check_client) connection from 2404:130:b1ff:1:2d0:59ff:fec0:fba9:42076 distccd[7173] (dcc_check_client) Notice: ipv6 ACLs not implemented What makes this more confusing is that I don't have any ACLs set, I'm happy for any and all connections to be accepted. To make matters worse the distcc client only tries the first IP address that is returned for a hostname. I have IPv6 and IPv4 address against all my boxes. So now I need to have the IPv4 addresses for my compile hosts in DISTCC_HOSTS, not the hostnames. Bug#489340: iproute2: no error message when link up command fails.

Why? This seems like a really bad idea to me, and none of the callers in iproute benefits from this as far as I can see. Just ripping out the errno == 0 special casing looks like and option to me, unless anyone can find a reason for it. NLMSG_ERROR with errno == 0 is a netlink ACK message. (It'll give an error message and an error exit code! The message will be strange, but lets blame the kernel for that cosmetic issue. Atleast the user got some kind of notification.) Moving the return 0; inside the if (answer) would be another (atleast for iproutes callers of the library functions)... To me it looks like the problem is in the kernel sending back a NLMSG_ERROR with errno of zero. Some code path isn't setting it up properly. None the less, it would be be good if the application wouldn't poop it's pants when it can be avoided - broken kernel or not. The fix in this case is to propagate the return value from dev_change_flags(). rtnetlink: propagate error from dev_change_flags in do_setlink() Andreas Henriksson [EMAIL PROTECTED] reported that unlike ifconfig, iproute doesn't report an error when setting an interface up fails. Bug#491158: grep: grep -i fails on glibc 2.8
Package: grep Version: 2.5.3~dfsg-5 Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: ubuntu-patch origin-ubuntu intrepid Hi, When building the current grep package on glibc 2.8, the configure check for glibc's regex will get confused since it does not define _GNU_SOURCE. As a result, it builds the package with the internal copy of the regex library, which seems to be seriously broken (e. g. grep -i does not work any more, see https://launchpad.net/bugs/241990). I worked around this by explicitly configuring with --without-included-regex. Upstream should fix their configure test to define _GNU_SOURCE (and maybe also their internal regex lib), but as a distribution the configure argument suffices for now. Bug#491159: spamassassin: sa-learn tries to read a message from stdin if given an empty message/folder list
Package: spamassassin Version: 3.2.5-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch $ sa-learn -f /dev/stdin /dev/null Learned tokens from 1 message(s) (1 message(s) examined) I call sa-learn in a script, and give it a list of messages that I know are ham or spam, using -f. Sometimes the list is empty, and to my surprise sa-learn always reports that it has learned from 1 message. The problem is that on line 379, sa-learn decides that if its list of targets is empty, it must be reading a message from stdin. But that's not true if it's been given an empty list of messages. Hmm, there might be other changes in the new udev that are needed by bits of d-i, such as the fix for #488394. I fixed this one as well (OTOH, the fix may have introduced new bugs). FYI. I have tested the new udev in installs for i386, amd64 and armel and not seen any really strange problems. There was one bug due to udevd not being cleanly stopped before shutting down the installer (#490924), but that should be fixed now. On IRC Marco and I discussed that some files included in the current version are not needed for D-I [1] and I expect those will be dropped with the next upload. Bug#489340: iproute2: no error message when link up command fails.
On Thu, 2008-17-07 at 02:31 +0200, Andreas Henriksson wrote: Why? Thats just how it rolls. This seems like a really bad idea to me, and none of the callers in iproute benefits from this as far as I can see. The receiver(kernel in this case, but it could be some other user space user) returning a zero means success. Essentially zero is an (Positive) ACK. The receiver returning a non-zero implies a failure. Essentially a N(egative) ACK. In the case of a NACK, the kernel must return you the original message header you sent (similar to the way some icmp messages behave). The returned error code is a standard errno - if you sent a bad config you may get an EINVAL back. The sender combines the errno + the header to figure out what went wrong. Does that make sense? So the kernel fix is required (as Stephen noted). cheers, jamal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#358070: clisp: FTBFS/please support mips64: includes mips(32) file
Hi Martin! I asked the CLISP-devel mailing list about this bug [1], here the answer. On Tue, 15 Jul 2008 15:58:31 +0200, Sam Steingold wrote: src/makemake.in detects mips64, so it creates arimips64.c (as is clear from your log) not arimips.c. please try to run in full 64-bit mode or full 32-bit mode. Maritn, can you confirm that in full 64-bit mode *and* full 32-bit mode CLISP correctly builds? In that case, I guess that CLISP on the third MIPS ABI (a 64-bit kernel with 32-bit userland) would be an upstream wishlist bug :-) Thx, bye, Gismo / Luca Footnotes: [1] http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.lisp.clisp.devel/18516/focus=18582 pgpoxFSgoz2AS.pgp Description: PGP signature

Hi, OTOH, in a 2.4.1-6 sid chroot it does not work and Mechtilde tells me she just installed 2.4.1-6 on a lenny system so it can't be some library in lenny either. - I think the closing with 2.4.1-6 was correct. Bug#489900: Cleanup in .orig.tar.gz or debian/rules?
Philipp Matthias Hahn [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: 1. Only in the final debian/jspwiki/ tree (but build with the original .jar files) 2. Each time during the debian/rules run 3. Once in the .orig.tar.gz (the download is only availabe as .zip) You can either modify the .orig.tar.gz not to include the jars, or, IMO a better choice, modify the building process to use the Debian provided jars. I personally prefer keeping the orig.tar.gz as close to the original as possible (for JSPWiki all the Debian package does is repackage the zip as a tar.gz). This process produces a nice and clean build process with the existing debian/rules file. the files in lib/ are. I'm not aware of any other Debian package shipping them also, so is it okay to include them in jspwiki only or do I need to split them into their own packages? If you are planning on doing a NMU then you need to split those out and package them separately. All Debian packages must contain buildable source for all code, and considering the JSPWiki package doesn't contain source for the extra libraries, it is far better to package them separately. If those libraries really aren't included in Debian, 2.6.3 won't be packaged very soon by me. Also, if I strip those .jar-files from the .orig.tar.gz, do I still need to keep their copyright and license-info in debian/copyright? No. -- * Sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology (T.P) * * PGP public key available @ http://www.iki.fi/killer * -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#489955: ImportError: dynamic module does not define init function (initgtk)
I just stumbled over this bug report... What this error message is telling you, is that python tries to import a module called gtk, but can not find it's init method (something like the main function of a C program), which is called initgtk. This can happen, if there is somewhere a library called gtk.so in the python path (even in your private python path), which is not a python module, or if there is somewhere a copy of _gtk.so, but it has been renamed to gtk.so. So, you might want to check that there is no file called gtk.so anywhere in your python path that erroneously gets imported. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#491179: Provide mnemonics for the upgrade options in the upgrade dialog
Package: synaptic Version: 0.62.1 Tags: patch When packages can be upgraded, I usually try a smart upgrade. If that would remove packages that aren't obsolete (e.g., if a new architecture-independent package is available but the corresponding architecture-specific package isn't and they must have the same version), I try a default upgrade. While there are obviously bigger improvements that could be made to this workflow, one small but helpful improvement would be to provide mnemonics for the Default Upgrade and Smart Upgrade buttons in the upgrade dialog. Bug#491180: release-notes: Document the switch of default system log daemon from sysklogd to rsyslog
Package: release-notes Severity: normal Hello, Recently the default system log daemon was switched from sysklogd+klogd to rsyslog[1]. I think that this is worth mentioning in the release-notes, even though it doesn't affect upgrades to lenny but only fresh new installs. I don't know current practice regarding the documentation of changes of Debians defaults, but personally I'd prefer to have such changes documented somewhere at a central place, so I can follow Debians best practice if I want. And I don't know any better place than release notes for changes related to new releases. greetings jonas [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2008/07/msg00493.html -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.25-1-amd64-resivo (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#489687: dvb-apps: contains /usr/lib/libdvbapi.a which is also in me-tv
I want to support this bug report with additional information. Besides the conflict message, this bug causes a further problem. Me_tv should be using files provided by dvbapps to scan for available TV stations in the user's area when me_tv is first used. Background: In order to scan for local TV stations upon first use, me_tv recommends the obsolete dvb-utils package which contains out-of-date files for use by (dvb-utils) scan when constructing a valid channels.conf for me_tv. The correct (up-to-date) files are in dvb-apps, which replaces dvb-utils, but dvb-apps conflicts with me_tv (as this bug reports). Example: I tried to scan for Sydney TV stations using me_tv, but I couldn't find any Seven Network stations (a digital TV in my house can receive these stations perfectly well). I checked the file used by (dvb-utils) scan (/usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/dvb-t/au-Sydney_North_Shore) and it had a wrong setting for the Seven Network (the value 2/3 should be 3/4). When I checked the equivalent file (/usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/au-Sydney_North_Shore) in dvb-apps, the setting for the Seven Network had been corrected. Using the corrected setting found in dvb-apps, scan and me_tv found all the Seven Network stations in the Sydney region. So: me_tv currently relies on an out-of-date package (dvb-utils), and conflicts with the up-to-date replacement package (dvb-apps). This results in some stations being incorrectly scanned during first use of me_tv. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#420556: #420556 partimage-server: server crashes with multiple clients

The problem could be fixed with 0.6.4-17 and the available thread-privilege-fix.patch http://partimage.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/partimage/trunk/partimage/patches/thread-privilege-fix.patch?view=markuppathrev=30 The patch is included in 0.6.7-1 so the bug could be marked fixed for the version in lenny and sid. I need to stay on 0.6.4 for some more time because of the clients so I built 0.6.4-17 with this patch and got partimage running on lenny again without this problem. Bug#490847: [pkg-nvidia-devel] Bug#490847: nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx init script not removed on uninstall
On Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 12:16:58PM -0500, Steven Rosario wrote: Package: nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx Severity: important I recently upgraded my system from an nvidia card needing legacy drivers to an nvidia card that uses the current drivers. After doing apt-get remove nvidia* to remove the legacy drivers, and installing the nvidia drivers through module assistant, I faced a mystery problem where X would start directly after install but would freeze with a black screen before loading after reboot. I traced the problem to nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx leaving its init script in /etc/init.d in spite of uninstall, such that after the new nvidia-glx init script would create symlinks to the proper glx driver, the leftover legacy script would recreate non-working symlinks that would cause X loading to fail at GLX initialization. Config files are left behind on remove. They are removed on purge. That is normal behaviour. Now perhaps the init script doing anything if the package is removed is a problem. To fully remove something either use apt-get remove --purge or use dpkg --purge -- Len Sorensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#169948: zope-formulator with no user base in Debian?

I hope not to tip onto the toes of all the arch fans - I'm just to old to learn another Vcs every second month, but with some help I might manage. In the Debian Med team we have a policy document which explain the basic steps very simple. I think I remember pkg-zope had something similar. Any links? Kind regards Andreas.
