Hello,

Looks like the new efl is sometimes writing outside of the build dirs.
We have a pattern to fix this, but unfortunately it will require source
uploads. I'll start preparing these.

Bug#892802: transition: efl

2018-03-13 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: transition

Hello,

I'd like to request a transition for efl from experimental -> unstable. This
release takes over a few other source packages. It also reverses some
Debian-local ABI & soname deviations from the upstream releases.

The status of affected source packages is as follows:

e17
  - 0.17.6-1.1+b1 builds successfully
edbus
  - 1.7.10-1+b2 builds successfully
elementary
  - deprecated, integrated into efl
evas-loaders
  - deprecated, integrated into efl
exactimage
  - 1.0.1-1+b1 FTBFS: #878572, https://phab.enlightenment.org/T6247
intone
  - 0.77+git20120308-1+b3 builds successfully if built after edbus
libdbus-c++-1-0v5
  - 0.9.0-8.1 builds successfully
terminology
  - 0.9.1-1 builds successfully

I haven't done a transition before, so I'm not sure all is in line. Please let

Bug#892657: enlightenment should be built with Wayland support and enable x11 or Wayland selection for GDN login

That's correct - I'd like to support Wayland, but so far I've been unable to
get a Wayland enabled build working with X11.

A work-in-progress patch is in #891392. Fixes welcome!

This is the approach in the patch mentioned above.

It requires the version of efl in experimental. The last issue blocking
an efl transition has a workaround as of yesterday. So I'm hopeful that
enlightenment won't be out of testing for long.

The Debian package for enlightenment is not currently built with Wayland
support, though EFL is. I began work, but ran into two problems:
1) it broke X11 support for my own setup.
2) I couldn't test Wayland since I depend on multihead support.

If you have time and interest, WIP patch is attached. Fixes welcome!

I'm not able to reproduce. This could be related to your video drivers.
But since Enlightenment in buster is old an unmaintained, nothing can be
done to fix it.

The current Enlightenment release is available in Debian experimental -
I'd encourage you to try that version instead.

Thanks,
Ross

I compared to fvwm, mwm, twm, sawfish, and i3 - none had Depends or

Thanks for the feedback. I've fixed these issues, but kept the
transitional package for libelementary-dev. stable & sid have it,
but it comes from the old separate elementary source.

All pending updates plus an upgrade to 1.20.5 have been pushed to:
https://github.com/rvandegrift/efl/tree/debian/experimental

I've tested upgrades from current sid & experimental, including
replacing old -dev packages. Ready for review when you get a chance.

(mentors isn't accepting my upload right now, I can try again later if
you'd like to see a built package.)

I have, it does, and that's a reasonable reluctance. But I don't see
anything there that would tell a new contributor about the intended

It could be that this bug would be better filed against Developer's

Well yes, but this bug is about the first issue only. If they can't be
separated, or if there's no concensus regarding purposes for
d/changelog, this should probably be closed.

Software X11 support is included, but upstream has dropped the engine
headers. I asked for more info on this issue.[1] They report that this
was intentional, but that they'll begin installing these headers again.
Details are in the thread.

Bug#878967: debian-policy: clarify purpose of debian/changelog

2017-10-18 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: debian-policy
Version: 4.1.1.1
Severity: normal

Section 4.4 explains quite a bit about debian/changelog, but doesn't really
explain its purpose. I took its purpose to be recording history and driving
automation - which led to some mistakes that might've been avoided. During a
recent thread on mentors [1], I learned that the purpose is to provide a human
readable list of changes between released versions of Debian. This came as a
surprise.

I'm not sure how this should be worded best, but I found a number of the
comments on the thread to be helpful, especially [2].

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#878584: [Pkg-e-devel] Bug#878584: [libevas-dev] Missing dependency for libecore-dev

On Sun, Oct 15, 2017 at 01:20:05PM +0200, Andreas Metzler wrote:
> Ross, could you apply and push the attached patch?

Hmm, two concerns about this solution:

1) lintian finds a circular dependency
  libecore-dev libector-dev libeet-dev libeeze-dev libeina-dev libemile-dev
libevas-dev
I don't know for sure that it's a problem here, but in the past the team
has worked hard to avoid cycles.

2) Upstream doesn't really support builds against part of EFL (and
hasn't since the library merge before 1.8). I think we generally ought
to avoid supporting scenarios that upstream doesn't.

Instead, what if all of the -dev packages were merged into
libefl-all-dev? Sample patch is attached. It's mildly tested:
enlightenment from experimental builds, and the resulting Depends look
correct. What do you think?

I've pushed the accumulated fixes to:
https://github.com/rvandegrift/efl/tree/debian/experimental
I've added this patch at:

I've tested anatoly's patch, and it seems to work well. I can once

The --system workaround is not very good, since it breaks on other
platforms. This prevents us from having cross-platform scripts that use
--target.

Please consider applying, even though upstream is working to make --user

Yep, if I downgrade to a kernel before 4.9.25-1, the display works as expected.

Bug#863257: gdm3: stretch - login box displayed off-screen

2017-05-24 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: gdm3
Version: 3.22.3-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

After upgrading to stretch, I cannot see gdm3's login box, only the
background. If I press enter and type my password, I'm logged in correctly.
So I think the login box is being displayed off-screen.

My system is a ThinkPad T450 in a dock. The lid is closed, and two external
monitors are attached. Under jessie, gdm3 displayed the login box on one of
the external displays.

Thanks,
Ross

Isn't it too late in the stretch freeze? If not, and it can be fixed,
great! Otherwise please consider, as cloud-init will be broken in
stretch.

If it's more acceptable, the FAI built cloud images could include
net-tools even though it's optional.

Bug#850572: linux-image-4.8.0-2-amd64: Performance regression in 4.8

2017-01-07 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.8.11-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Hello,

I recently upgraded to linux-image-4.8.0-2-amd64 and hit a performance
regression in some steam games. On 4.7.0-1 the RimWorld title screen
renders at 60fps. On 4.8.0-2, it renders at 30fps with noticable input
latency. So far I haven't found a microbenchmark that demostrates the
issue.

The problem appears in 4.8.0-rc1 and is still present in 4.10-rc2. I
tried to bisect v4.7.8..v4.8.0-rc1, but after a few iterations the
kernels lock hard very quickly after bootup.

The only clue I have: my laptop has Intel and nvidia GPUs. The problem
affects both. The above tests were performed on Intel.

Let me know if I can provide any additional info,
Ross

Bug#848370: terminology crashes when creating new tab

2016-12-16 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: terminology
Version: 0.9.1-1

When built against efl 1.8 (currently in sid), terminology crashes when
creating a new tab. This is fixed in newer efl (currently in experimental),
but due to abi changes, will require a rebuild to use the newer libs.

Here it is, this time just adopting and fixing the security issue:

No problems with creating new tabs. Updated changelog:

 * Fix for "CVE-2015-8971: Escape Sequence Command Execution vulnerability"
backported from upstream rev b80bedc. (Closes: #843434)

That's a bummer. I can reproduce the click New segfault, not the other
issue. It doesn't occur when used with new EFL from experimental.

So I'll prepare another version that consists only of the security fix
backported to jessie. The new version will wait for experimental.

Bug#843073: dpkg-shlibdeps: broken on i386 with merged /usr

2016-11-03 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.18.10
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

debootstrap 1.0.85 began deploying with --merged-usr by default in
response to #839046. On i386, this causes dpkg-shlibdeps to fail on
(some?) shared libraries.

An example error:
dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for
/usr/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (used by
debian/libevas1/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libevas.so.1.18.2)
Hint: check if the library actually comes from a package.

In this case:
# ls -l /usr/lib/ld-linux.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Oct 18 21:10 /usr/lib/ld-linux.so.2 ->
i386-linux-gnu/ld-2.24.so

To workaround with a pbuilder chroot, when creating, supply:
  --debootstrapopts --no-merged-usr.

I'm not sure if this is a debootstrap or dpkg-dev issue. Apologies in
advance if I'm incorrect. The same underlying problem was reported
against usrmerge in #810499. For some reason, debootstrap does not
create this symlink on amd64.

Ross.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the detailed info on this issue. I just tested enlightenment

logging in, I see the following:

$ echo $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

Am I right in thinking that is the desired behavior?

Thanks,

Bug#770790: linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64: display corruption on 3.14 with radeon RS880

2014-11-23 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.5-1~bpo70+1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Hello,

3.16 from wheezy-backports causes video corruption on my radeon rs880.
During updates, flickering multicolored lines move down my screen. It
is probably too quick to get a screenshot. Larger updates cause worse
problems. Sometimes, the display will go blank for a few seconds, and
then return on its own. Nothing shows up in Xorg logs or dmesg.

This didn't happen in 3.2 from wheezy, 3.14 from wheezy-backports, or
3.14 upstream.

All of the following were affected:
3.15-rc1, upstream
3.15, wheezy-backports
3.17, experimental
3.18-rc6, upstream

I tried to bisect 3.14 and 3.15-rc1, but couldn't get a kernel stable
enough to load an X desktop.

Bug#759481: tinyca: No support for SHA2 as a signature algorithm. SHA1 gets deprecated in 2016.

2014-11-01 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: tinyca
Version: 0.7.5-5
Followup-For: Bug #759481

Dear Maintainer,

Attached is a patch to add support for SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, and
SHA-512. It also makes the default digest algorithm SHA-512. I've run
it though very basic server cert testing.

The patch is on top of the Debian local changes. I couldn't find an
upstream. If it exists, I'd be happy to help push it up.

This was a common workaround back in the late 0.17 era. I don't have a
great reference, but there's some discussion here:

Bug#707586: emacs24: Frame size set via geometry off by one

2014-10-12 Thread Ross Vandegrift
On 10/10/2014 02:55 PM, Rob Browning wrote:

results in a frame that is 79x76. If I change that to 81x78, then the
frame is created 80x77, as desired.

The behavior is the same when geometry is specified on the command-line.
 No similar problem with positioning.

I just tested emacs24 and emacs24-lucid on a relatively current jessie
system under Gnome 3, with emacs -geometry 80x77, and I ended up with
 a frame that would hold M-x 80 x x's.

So I wanted to check to see if this was still a problem for you.

I hadn't tested how many characters could be displayed in a line - I was
trusting the geometry displayed by the window manager when resized.

So the issue appears to be a display problem: emacs -geometry 80x77
creates a frame that is 80x77, but when resizing, the reported sizes are
off-by-one. I've reproduced that behavior on current jessie Gnome 3 and
on Enlightenment 0.18 - so it seems independent of window manager.

emacs23 from wheezy does not have this behavior - the geometry seen by
my window manager matches the number of characters I can display on one
line.

Bug#764495: evolution-ews: log spam fills all disk space

2014-10-08 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: evolution-ews
Version: 3.12.6-1
Severity: important

Today, I exited evolution and unplugged the ethernet cable from my
laptop. evolution-calendar-factory, running in the background, started
outputting the following message 8000 times per second:

org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.Calendar4[1345]:
(evolution-calendar-factory:1989): libeews-CRITICAL **:
e_ews_notification_get_events_sync: assertion 'notification-priv-connection
!= NULL' failed

Please disable this logging, or at least rate limit it to something
sane.

This bug is important because in a default jessie install, this output
go to syslog - thus, they quickly filled up my root partition, rendering
the system inoperable.

I'm not sure why ~/.xsession-errors is being redirected to syslog - I'll
track that down next and file a second bug against the responsible
package.

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#719329: vlc: Crackling sound at the begining of anything that VLC plays.

2014-05-12 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.3-5
Followup-For: Bug #719329

Hello,

This problem is reproducible on my laptop with vlc 2.0.3-5. Like the original
poster, vlc is the only software affected. Unlike the original poster, the
crackling only lasts a few seconds. I've attached the log from vlc
--extraintf=logger --log-verbose=2147483647 --logfile=vlc.log test.ogg

I tried vlc 2.1.2-2+b3 in a jessie chroot. There is a new kind of artifact at
the beginning of playback, but this problem is gone.

Python implementation of the Sane API (using ctypes) and abstration

The code is divided in 3 layers:

Sane API and try to avoid possible misuse of the Sane API. When

Emacs*.geometry:80x77

The behavior is the same when geometry is specified on the command-line.

Bug#706399: gnumeric: does not handle UTF-16 encoded CSV

2013-04-29 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: gnumeric
Version: 1.10.17-1.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

gnumeric 1.10, in wheezy, fails to correctly open UTF-16 encoded CSV
files. They open as a jumble of non-sense characters. LibreOffice Calc and
gnumeric 1.12, in sid, both open the same files correctly.

Bug#694982: libreoffice: automatically raises windows upon receiving focus

2013-03-23 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: libreoffice
Version: 1:4.0.2~rc1-1
Followup-For: Bug #694982

This bug still exists in the current 4.0 from experimental. There is an
option to disable mouse positioning at: Options - LibreOffice - View
- Mouse - Mouse positioning. This option does not work.

Looking through the LibreOffice source, there's a ton of weird input and
focus manipulation happening in vcl/unx/generic/window/salframe.cxx.
The comments indicate that much of that code is *designed* to break
window manager focus handling - features like focus follows mouse are
mentioned explicitly. Seems like quite a bit of effort went into making
this reliably break window managers - I doubt it'll ever be fixed.

Bug#698006: sendmail: Makefile fails to update submit.mc on starttls.m4 change

2013-01-12 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: sendmail
Version: 8.14.4-2.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

/etc/mail/Makefile does not list tls/starttls.m4 as a dependency of
submit.mc. Thus, if the TLS config changes, submit.cf will silently
contain the old values.

Not sure what the best fix is - adding the dependency to the Makefile
works as expected, but that might not be desirable for non-TLS sites.

Bug#679052: ifupdown: IPv6 looback config broken (and unnecessary)

2012-06-25 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.7
Severity: normal

Hello,

interfaces(5) entails that the following is valid:

iface lo inet6 loopback

But such an interface always fails:

$ sudo ifup lo
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Failed to bring up lo.

But it isn't necessary anyhow:
$ ip addr list dev lo
1: lo: LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
inet6 ::1/128 scope host
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

Changing the interface back to inet from inet6 fixes the issue, and
gets the exact same config as above.

Bug#678517: fonts-liberation: Liberation Sans does not display u correctly at all sizes

2012-06-22 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: fonts-liberation
Version: 1.07.2-3
Severity: normal

Hello,

Today I noticed that some slate.com headlines started to look very weird
in iceweasel. Bolded renderings of the letter u do not have the same
thickness as the other letters. If I change the font to DejaVu Sans,
the text looks correct.

The issue seems to only affect the bolded typeface, when scaled to
certain sizes. Slate's CSS for the problematic text is
font: bold 1.384em arial,sans-serif
I can fix the issue by adjusting this with firebug. Removing bold fixes
it, as does adjusting the size. Seems like bold at 18px is the culprit.

This is probably similar/related to #616620. Below is a minimal HTML
example which demonstrates the issue.

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#674903: texlive-math-extra: concrete breaks itemize lists

2012-05-28 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: texlive-math-extra
Version: 2012.20120516-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

The recent TeXlive upgrade from 2009-10 to 2012.20120516-1 broke
documents that use the concrete fonts and the itemize environment. I've
included a minimal example that works without \usepackage{concrete} and
breaks with it. I'll also include the recorder output and the logfile
in the other files section.

Thanks,
Ross Vandegrift

Bug#613752: Registers itself to open PDF and PostScript; ends up as the default

2011-12-26 Thread Ross Vandegrift
I recently hit this bug after an upgrade pulled in Gnome 3. Very
annoying. Though I agree that this should be changed, see here for a
workaround that's better than nothing:

Bug#651721: bash: M-f, M-b, M-Bksp broken on upgrade

2011-12-11 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: bash
Version: 4.2-1
Severity: normal

Hello, I upgraded to the most recent bash package from 4.1-3 and
discovered that the M-f (forward word), M-b (backward word), and M-Bksp
(kill previous word) shortcuts had broken.

I know there was a new /etc/bash.bashrc installed, but reverting to my
previous version (which only globally enabled bash_completion) did not
fix the issue.

This looks like a more-than- or something-other-than- bash bug. I
manually reinstalled 4.1-3, but the issue was not fixed. The other
packages upgraded at the same time do not appear obviously relevant (the
list is included below), so I think I need some help troubleshooting
the issue.

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#651721: bash: M-f, M-b, M-Bksp broken on upgrade

2011-12-11 Thread Ross Vandegrift
On Sun, 2011-12-11 at 13:30 -0600, Jonathan Nieder wrote:

What terminal do you use? What happens when you type ^V M-b?

gnome-terminal, version 3.0.1-1. ^V M-b has the same effect as M-b - it
enters a b at the prompt. Interestingly, ^V M-Bksp enters the delete
control code. It looks like bash isn't getting the meta modifer, though
it works in all of my other apps.

I never use xterm, as the bash/readline navigation keys have long been
unusable under xterm. I just gave xterm a shot - M-b in xterm enters a
â at the bash prompt. (I suspect this xterm issue is #574396, but it
seems much older than May 2010 to me.)

Does downgrading bash to 4.1-3 allow you to return to the old
 behavior?

Nope. This is why I'm thinking the bug is more complicated than a
straightforward bash problem. I just couldn't see anything else in my
aptitude log that seems even remotely possible.

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#633979: gnome-terminal: exits with error code on success

Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 3.0.1-1

Whenever I close the last open gnome-terminal window, gnome-terminal
exits with a non-zero error code. This casues window managers that
look at the error code to inform the user that gnome-terminal reported
and error. There is no problem and gnome-terminal should report success
on these exits.

Bug#611826: Failed to load terminal capabilities from '/etc/termcap'

2011-06-27 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: libvte9

Followup-For: Bug #611826

I also just hit this bug after upgrading libvte9 from 0.24.3-2+b1 - 0.28.1-1.
However, the workaround provided by Christopher Baines isn't a complete fix.

After making the symlink he suggests, my gnome-terminal works again. However,
I cannot switch between open tabs with Ctrl-PageUp.

Ctrl-PageDown work, however.

  No
difference. I am running Xorg from experimental and have NOT tested
  rolling back to wheezy packages.

The version number above and the X log below don't seem to point at
 experimental Xorg. Which is it?

Tonight I updated to the latest bits from experimental and ended up
with a broken X setup. I removed my pin file and downgraded all X
related packages to wheezy. The original issue reported in the bug is
gone. I wonder if I somehow ended up with a mostly-working mix of
package versions.

If I have some time next weekend, I'll try upgrading and reproducing
the issue again.

Some info might have been saved in /var/log/kern* maybe? Otherwise,
you might want to look into using netconsole to send logs (almost) in
 realtime to another machine.

I configured netconsole, regenerated my initramfs to enable kernel
modesetting, tested, and nothing - it all works now. Removed
netsonole, tried again, it still works. So it's fixed!

I notice that today I pulled in an upgrade from initramfs-tools 0.98.2
- 0.98.4. 0.98.3 began conflicting with usplash, which I had
installed.

So my guess is usplash was causing the problem, and the
initramfs-tools upgrade that forced usplash away was ultimately the
cure.

Sorry for the noise,

2010-02-28 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: azureus
Version: 4.3.0.6-1
Severity: normal

I recently upgraded to 4.3.0.6-1 from 4.3.0.0-1 on testing, and azureus
now fails to start every time with the same Java traceback. I have
downloaded the official 4.3.0.6 and it does not exhibit this issue. I
have confirmed that there is no copy of the software running, no
existing JVM, and have even logged out and rebooted. Both the Debian
package and the official release are using the same JVM.

Traceback is below. I can reproduce 100% of the time and am happy to
provide any additional information.

Thanks,

Upgrading from 0.49-1 to 5.0 today broke a number of applications of

Providing TFTP_OPTIONS=--secure in /etc/default/tftpd-hpa is
sufficient to fix this issue. It seems that this should be the default
to preserve old behavior?

Bug#566208: linux-image-2.6.26-2-486: e_powersaver causes constant lockups

2010-01-21 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-486
Version: 2.6.26-19lenny2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After upgrading linux-image-2.6.26-2-486 from 17lenny1 to 19lenny2, I
started experiencing 100% reproducable system lockups on a VIA C7
system. No errors in the logs, no oops, no BUG, nothing - just a hard
lock. No keyboard LED response and no sysrq functionality worked.

Sometimes the system wouldn't complete the boot process without
freezing. Sometimes it would last three minutes or so before
freezing. I could reproduce the lockup with cat /dev/zero file.
Every time, within 10 seconds, the system would freeze.

After a lot of trial, error, and searching, I discovered that the
e_powersaver module was being loaded and the lockups went away if I
unloaded it.

The kernel build help text indicates that the module shouldn't ever be
used, and is highly dangerous:

This adds the CPUFreq driver for VIA C7 processors. However, this
driver does not have any safeguards to prevent operating the CPU out
of spec and is thus considered dangerous. Please use the regular ACPI
 cpufreq driver, enabled by CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ.

I have blacklisted this module and suspect that it should be
blacklisted by default. It seems possible that Debian bug #563941 is
related to this issue as well, but there's not enough info in the
report for me to be sure.

Thanks,
Ross

Bug#560238: netbase: racoon is also broken by net.ipv6.bindv6only change

2010-01-07 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: netbase
Version: 4.40
Severity: normal

Hello,

I recently had a VPN break and have traced it back to the
net.ipv6.bindv6only change. When racoon initiates IKE, I can see the
response packet from the IPSec responder but racoon never receives it.

I disabled net.ipv6.bindv6only and rebooted. Now racoon is able to
bring up my VPN as previously.

Bug#560371: snmp: MIB loading seems broken

2009-12-10 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: snmp
Version: 5.4.2.1~dfsg-3
Severity: normal

In 5.4.1~dfsg-12, I had /usr/share/snmp/mibs setup with lots of MIBs
that I use all the time. After upgrading to 5.4.2.1~dfsg-3, the default
MIBDIRS changed to /usr/share/mibs. This broke a number of application
and doesn't appear to have been documented in the release notes.

I moved all of my MIBs from /usr/share/snmp/mibs to /usr/share/mibs, but
I am no longer able to resolve them:

rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$ MIBS=all snmptranslate -On CISCO-VTP-MIB::vtpVlanName
No log handling enabled - turning on stderr logging
Cannot find module (CISCO-VTP-MIB): At line 1 in (none)
CISCO-VTP-MIB::vtpVlanName: Unknown Object Identifier

I can do it, but I have to explicitly add /usr/share/mibs to MIBDIRS:

rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$ MIBDIRS=+/usr/share/mibs snmptranslate -On
CISCO-VTP-MIB::vtpVlanName
No log handling enabled - turning on stderr logging
Cannot find module (NET-SNMP-VACM-MIB): At line 2 in (none)
.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.46.1.3.1.1.4

This doesn't seem right - if that's the default, why does it need to be
set to take effect?

Yes, I do - I am using an E17 theme that creates custom cursors. I've

Yep, it looks like you pretty much hit the nail on the head. After
disabling custom cursors, Xorg's RSS is at 33MiB after being left all
night.

It sounds like the fix is known, and I'm just waiting for 1.7 to
bubble into the distro. Is there any reason you are interested in the
valgrind output? I'll leave the cursors disabled for now.

Thanks for the tip,

I just started hitting this - on every reboot of my box, sshfs complains

If fuse and udev need to be started in the opposite order, or if udev
needs to learn about fuse coming up, that should be the fix. Not to
restart udev and fuse all the time.

Bug#552994: mbrowse: Input handling prevents typing some characters

2009-10-28 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: mbrowse
Version: 0.3.1-8
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since the GTK 2.x upgrade, mbrowse has become totally unusable - typing
certain characters into the text input fields is impossible. This
prevents me from entering certain hostnames or community strings.

1) If I type e: mbrowse exits
2) If I type g: mbrowse trys to GET the currently selected item
3) If I type w: mbrowse trys to WRITE to the currently selected item

Please revert to the old GTK 1.x version of this application, which had
none of these problems.

Bug#539752: emacs installs, but installs emacs23-nox

2009-08-18 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: emacs
Version: 23.1+1-2
Severity: normal

I updated my installation yesterday. I've had the emacs and emacs22
packages installed. The following happened:

malaclypse:~# grep emacs /var/log/aptitude
[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] emacs23-bin-common
[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] emacs23-common
[INSTALL, DEPENDENCIES] emacs23-nox
[UPGRADE] emacs 22.3+1-1.1 - 23.1+1-2

This breaks my emacs in X, which isn't tragic (I can workaround it), but
is quite confusing! I've added this to this bug report since it seems
likely that this is related to dependencies that aren't installable,
though my system had no problem installing emacs23-common.

Bug#539752: emacs installs, but installs emacs23-nox

FWIW, I could reproduce this in a Squeeze chroot, although I had
emacs22-nox installed there. But AFAICS this is not a bug in emacs which
 depends on emacs23 | emacs23-gtk | emacs23-nox.

But shouldn't emacs pull in the X version if I don't have any emacs*-nox
installed? Especially if the action replaces the default emacs
command with a non-X version.

It's probably not that the dependencies aren't installable (try
aptitude install emacs23 to find out -- it would have worked for me),
but rather that aptitude chose a solution that does not involve
installing additional packages (the emacs23 package has more
 dependencies than emacs22).

You're correct, it is installable (I was responding to the previous
comments). I fixed my installation by installing emacs23 and things are
working fine.

BTW, how did you upgrade? I did with aptitude safe-upgrade, it is
possible that aptitude full-upgrade or aptitude install emacs would
 have had a different outcome.

I did aptitude safe-upgrade.

A final tip for you: install emacs23-gtk instead of emacs23, GTK+ is the
preferred toolkit by upstream (see #539800).

Okay, cool - I'll check that out.

Bug#534588: gnome-mount: Unable to umount USB mass-storage device

2009-06-25 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: gnome-mount
Version: 0.8-2
Severity: important

Hello, after updating my squeeze installation, I am no longer able to
umount USB devices using gnome-mount. If I attach my USB device,
nautilus automounts the device just fine.

However, when I try to unmount the device, gnome-mount responds:
An application is preventing the volume 'COWON' from being
unmounted.

But there are no processes with open fds on the volume:

rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$ sudo fuser -m /media/COWON/
rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$

If I log out of my X session, and SSH in remotely, I can sucessfully run
gnome-mount --unmount --device /dev/sdb1 and it correcly unmounts the
device.

  Severity: important

Hello, after updating my squeeze installation, I am no longer able to
umount USB devices using gnome-mount. If I attach my USB device,
nautilus automounts the device just fine.

However, when I try to unmount the device, gnome-mount responds:
An application is preventing the volume 'COWON' from being
  unmounted.

But there are no processes with open fds on the volume:

  rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$ sudo fuser -m /media/COWON/
  rvandegr...@malaclypse:~$

If I log out of my X session, and SSH in remotely, I can sucessfully run
gnome-mount --unmount --device /dev/sdb1 and it correcly unmounts the
  device.

Then there was a process blocking the umount. Did you also check with lsof?

Imho not a bug in gnome-mount. Just try to find the process.

I just checked that. lsof finds no open files under /media/COWON (the
mountpoint in question):
malaclypse:~# lsof +D /media/COWON/
malaclypse:~#

Checking the open fd links in /proc also shows that there are no
processes keeping such files open:

malaclypse:/proc# ls -l /proc/*/fd/* | grep COWON
ls: cannot access /proc/3150/fd/255: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access /proc/3150/fd/3: No such file or directory

Not sure, but maybe gnome-vfs/gvfs/fuse/nautilus is blocking the umount.
You could try to kill the processes step by step to find the culprit.

I'm trying some other ways to umount this, and I now think Hal is the
culprit. gnome-mount's error checking is just relaying the status it
gets from Hal. But I can get Hal to throw a
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Busy with other ways.

So I think I need to dig into Hal and not gnome-mount.

Thanks,
Ross

gvfsd-trash is the culprit. I'll take it up with gvfs.

Sorry for the noise!

Bug#519970: Nautilus fails to browse SMB share with nautilus-cd-burner running

2009-03-16 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.20.0-7
Severity: normal

Previous to the release of Debian lenny, I was able to browse Windows
file shares from my workstation by opening a nautilus window and browing
to smb://domain%3busern...@hostname/share. After the release, the
nautilus window freezes when connecting via this name.

Using strace, I determined that nautilus was stuck waiting forever in a
futex call. No other nautilus processes were running (I don't use
Gnome), but it looks like nautilus-cd-burner was running.

On a hunch, I killed it. After killing nautilus-cd-burner, I can browse
Windows shares normally.

Bug#512428: gnome-control-center: gnome-keyboard-properties re-enables Mouse Keys

2009-01-20 Thread Ross Vandegrift
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:2.22.2.1-2
Severity: normal

Sometimes, gnome-keyboard-properties turns on Mouse Keys. As far as I
know, I have never used this feature. When this happens, I go into
gnome-keyboard-properties and disable that item. Somehow, it randomly
comes back.

I don't know whether it indicates anything, but the Allow to control
the pointer using the keyboard is in bold text.

The backend access shared libs are linked into bind. If the backend
code were statically linked, that would be sufficient reason to reject
 things out of hand.

With the change, 9.4.2 Depends on:
   libbind9-30, libc6 (= 2.7-1), libdb4.2, libdns32, libisc32, libisccc30,
   libisccfg30, libldap2 (= 2.1.17-1), liblwres30, libmysqlclient15off (=

which is much too heavy weight for the stock package. so the question
becomes, do we want to have one bind9-dlz package that scrapes all
those dependencies in, or do we want to additionally have some subset
that only scrape in certain pieces? (many admins have issues with that
 other SQL implementation, for example.)

In all honestly, this isn't too relevant for me anymore - my
installation is on a long-term track toward powerDNS. DLZ isn't too
long for my world :-)

I reported this bug a few years back and stumbled across it today.
This is long since outdated, and if the bug was not closed
automatically on Nov 12, please feel free to close it.

Current builds of iceweasel and iceape all work fine however I have my
pointer mapped.
