Upgrading from 3.1.0 to 3.1.1: fonts messed
Hi! I got a strange problem when uprgading KDE from 3.1.0 to 3.1.1. I'm using packages for Woody from: deb http://ftp.du.se/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/3.1/Debian stable main No text is rendered, instead everything shows up as straight horizontal lines. All the dialog boxes are very wide, apparently the character dimensions seem to bee something very odd. I had this problem before, that time it was solved by pulling the qt3 from unstable. This time it didn't help :( The log file doesn't show anything useful. The problem appears with other QT3 applications (e.g. qtella) as well. Anybody having similar problems? Here's a list of packages that QT3 depends on: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ for i in `ldd /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 | cut -d ' ' -f 3 | xargs dpkg -S | cut -d ':' -f 1 |sort | uniq`; do apt-show-versions -p $i; done libaudio2/unstable uptodate 1.6-5 libc6/unstable upgradeable from 2.3.1-3 to 2.3.1-16 libfreetype6/unstable uptodate 2.1.3+2.1.4rc2-4 libpng3/unstable upgradeable from 1.2.5-8 to 1.2.5-10 libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2/unstable upgradeable from 1:2.95.4-15 to 1:2.95.4-17 xlibmesa3/unstable upgradeable from 4.1.0-16 to 4.2.1-6 xlibs/unstable uptodate 4.2.1-6 zlib1g/unstable upgradeable from 1:1.1.4-8 to 1:1.1.4-11 If this is not the right forum then please point me to one! -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Kyyhkysmäki 9 A 5 02600 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---
3.0.2 Slowness
Hi! I experienced a noticeable slowdown on my machine (Athlon [EMAIL PROTECTED] w/ 128M of RAM), when upgrading KDE from 2.2.2 to 3.0.2. I'm using woody, with some unstable packages. Is the amount of memory an issue here? For example, the KDE startup takes something like 1m30s to a full session and starting KMail 30s alone. This can't be normal, according to what I've read. What are the key issues here? My hard drive has UDMA/100 configured and working. -- Jaakko Kyrö
PNG trouble?
Hi! I'm running unstable. After last update today kmail and knode ceased working, crash with SIGILL before anything shows. From the backtrace I could see that it originated from libpng, which is the newest version. Konqueror works fine, though. Anyone else experiencing this? -- -Jaakko Kyrö

It seems to crash somewhat randomly and it seems to happen upon clicking the OK button on the error dialog. Happens with http://www.keltainenporssi.fi too. Hotmail doesn't work at all. Could this be a transparent proxy problem? I haven't checked whether konqueror actually tries to contact those addresses. And, everything works fine when set the proxy manually. I don't like it though since I have a fast connection. -- -Jaakko Kyrö
konqueror problems
Hi! There are problems with some sites, for example hotmail and http://www.mbnet.fi When I try to access the site, konqueror either cant' get there at all or crashes after a few "Can't connect to..." dialogs. This applies only, when I don't use a proxy. But, I guess my ISP has a transparent one. Netscape has no problems though. I have an account at the local university, so I got things working with konqy by using an ssh tunnel to their proxy thus avoiding the ISP:s proxy. Could this be a problem with my ISP, broken proxy? Again, netscape has no problems. When I don't use the tunnel, I get following errors in my .xsession-errors: kio (KRun): ERROR: ERROR 23 www.hotmail.com and kio (KRun): ERROR: ERROR 23 netpool.adhostcenter.com Konqueror and the libs are version 2.1.0.1 for sid. I don't know much about proxies, though. I checked the kde bug database and this looks very much like bug #13965 or #11620 (which actually was maked done). -Jaakko Kyrö

Should I try and reinstall something? I have generally used old configuration files upon installation. I can't remember if there were any concerning kde. -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Pengerkatu 24 A 3 00500 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---
image rendering
Hi! I have a strange problem with konqueror. If i click on an image, it gets loaded but not rendered. If I just visit the previous page, by pushing back & forward buttons, the image is OK. Happens with at least GIF and jpeg image formats. Here is a snippet from my .xsession-errors: ---8<- fatal parsing error: unexpected end of file in line 1 fatal parsing error: error while parsing prolog in line 1 Parsing error kparts: WARNING: Part 'child view' has a widget view widget with a focus policy of NoFocus. It should have at least a ClickFocus policy, for part activation to work well. ->8--- Viewing with kview works. Versions of kdelibs and related stuff are newest possible 2.1beta2, downloaded today. -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Pengerkatu 24 A 3 00500 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---

Does anybody know if this is kde or qt bug? IMHO, printing in general hasn't got too much attention from the kde/qt folks, considering how important the functionality is to a desktop user. -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Pengerkatu 24 A 3 00500 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---
kpat dependencies
Hi! The new KPat is most impressive. Thanks for the effort! However, I think you should add kdewallpapers to the KPat Depends. Didn't work for me without them. I'm using potato 2.1beta2 debs. -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Pengerkatu 24 A 3 00500 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---
Printing from kde
Hi all! Anybody else had problems with printing from KDE apps? I use A4 papersize and every time I print something is missing from the top of the page. Happens at least in kword, kspread and konqueror. This might be a kdelibs bug? Affected versions are 2.0.1 and 2.1beta2. It's not my printer/spooler since the ps previewer shows it too. I have already filed this in bugs.kde.org, I'm just curious. -- --- Jaakko Kyrö, University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science Pengerkatu 24 A 3 00500 Helsinki tel. 040-5960945 ---
