Bug#230205: kdebase-kio-plugins: Please extend package description

2004-01-29 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: kdebase-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.1.3-1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

I upgraded from KDE 2.x konqueror to KDE 3.x konqueror by running
apt-get install konqueror
Unfortunately I could not view thumbnails, and since I am on dialup I
cannot randomly try out various packages but rather look at package
descriptions to see if a certain package fills my need.

kdebase-kio-plugins currently says:
Description: KDE I/O Slaves
 KDE I/O Slaves
 .
This package is part of the official KDE base module.

This is not very descriptive and did not lead me to the solution
that I need this packet. Especially it repeats the Short description
in the long description. I would suggest somthing like
Description: KDE I/O Slaves
This packet contains various internal helper tools for many KDE
programms, like e.g. konqueror. If you need to access e.g. zip-files
transparently or view previews, you have to install this paket.
 .
This package is part of the official KDE base module.
 .
KDE is an advanced desktop environment.

Possibly even the Short description should be reformulated to give
a novice an idea.

I mark this as a bug, because policy 3.4 says:
The description should describe the package (the program) to a user
(system administrator) who has never met it before so that they have
enough information to decide whether they want to install it. This
description should not just be copied verbatim from the program's
   documentation.

And as a user/system administrator I might know what KDE is (though it
won't hurt to explain that as well, suppose I just learned Gnome
coming from e.g. another common OS and now start to explore my
system), but not even having a full sentence specific to the package,
and KDE I/O Slaves which contains two acronyms and one technical
term is not descriptive to someone who has never met it before (and
I have used KDE 2.x, so I even heard about I/O Slaves, just I did not
know that I needed them in konquerer as I could see the images just
fine when clicking on them).

Bug#230209: kdeprint: Can't add printer using printmgr, printer driver can't be found.

2004-01-29 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: kdeprint
Version: 4:3.1.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

I am not able anymore to add a printer from kcmshell printmgr using
the Add Printer Wizard:
- Next
- Network printer (TCP) or Network printer w/IPP (IPP/HTTP) (doesn't
seem to be important) then Next
- Enter printer address and Next
- FIRST ERROR: clicking on Postscript printer brings the error
Unable to find the Postscript driver (no error message on stdout).
- alternatively, select any Manufacturer and Model and Next
- select any driver (Driver Information works, though the information
dialog is too high for the screen, scrollbar would be nice).
- Next
- error dialog appears:
Unable to load the requested driver:

Unable to create the Foomatic driver
[HP-LaserJet_8000,Postscript]. Either that driver does not
exist, or you don't have the required permissions to perform
that operation.

I modified the script /usr/bin/foomatic-ppdfile (aka foomatic-datafile),
in order to let it output its command line, and get the following output
on stderr when starting the printmgr from a console:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = us,
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = en
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C).
-t cups -d Postscript -p HP-LaserJet_8000
Unknown option: t

Looking at the Foomatic manpages, it appears as well that the -t
parameter is unknown to this utility, probably the reason for the
failure. Fact is, I'm unable to add new printers using the Print Manager.

Versions of foomatic packages:
ii foomatic-bin 3.0.0-20040114-1 linuxprinting.org printer support -
transition package
ii foomatic-db20040114-1 linuxprinting.org printer support -
database
ii foomatic-db-engine 3.0.0-20040114-1 linuxprinting.org printer support -
programs
ii foomatic-db-gimp-print 4.2.5-6 linuxprinting.org printer support -
database for Gimp-Print printe
ii foomatic-db-hpijs 1.5-20040114-2 linuxprinting.org printer support -
database for HPIJS printers
ii foomatic-filters 3.0.0-20040114-1 linuxprinting.org printer support -
filters

I'd be happy if you could fix this. I'd say the problem appeared
sometimes during January, not much before.

Thanks, Eric

KDE 3.1.5 Status Update - 20040129

2004-01-29 Thread Chris Cheney
KDE is still not anywhere near ready to go into sarge. Most of it is
caused by the buildd admins. You can see the dates of last state change
on the various packages, many of them have been stuck for over 2 weeks!

BTW - KDE 3.2 is nearly ready to go into sid now.

I propose that the initial upload of KDE 3.2 be made to experimental rather
than unstable. Anyonw who is tracking sid ought to be able to figure out how
to get 3.2 from experimental. This would allow some initial testing to be
done on the packages to make sure there aren't intractable bugs that will
keep them in unstable for months, while also giving 3.1.5 time to make it to
 sarge.

With KDE not even being built on various archs while in sid already,
what makes you think uploading to experimental will help find bugs on
other archs? If you didn't know already experimental isn't built by
buildds at all. And at the current rate that the buildds are retrying
KDE 3.1.5 it will be months before it goes into sarge as well.

I then went back to Woody and stuck with stable but thought I'd go with

Things seemed to look good, got the KDE choose language, look etc, and even
the KDM login screen. But after doing so all I get is the Debian logo
desktop with no toolbars or other usable functions.
I jump to another tty and being a newbie try to restart X (all this as root -
yes horribly inproper I know but until I work out how to give a user a bit
more power that's what I'll stick with) and get the following error;

xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up
Xinit: unable to connect to X server
Xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error

I have attempted to serach for answers on the internet, but being a newbie
I'm lost and now ask for some easy to understand help.
I'm not a big one for tar balls and stuff, prefering the apt-get way so any
thing in that domain to help me get X 4.3 with KDE and Woody going would be
most appreciated.

A while I'm at it, is it at all possible to have Sarge and KDE? From what
I've read, it seems not, instead I have to go to sid.

Geoff Maclean

The undeniable fact that other parts of the project are making it harder for
sarge to be release-ready is no reason for you to make it harder for sarge to
be release-ready.

If KDE was actually ready to go into sarge except for buildds (which it
isn't), I would happily and loudly nag the buildd maintainers on the grounds
that they were the last people holding up an important release goal. I don't
feel I can legitimately do that yet. :-(

  What next?

As you may have already guessed, you should fiddle around with your
config files under ~/.kde/share/config. I'd start by mv'ing
~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc somewhere else, and see if the
 situation improves. Also, ~/.kde/share/config/konq*, and/or
 ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/*.

That's what I wanted to know - a list of files to poke around at.
I'll do that over the next couple of days...pretty swamped at work
right now.

It may or may not be worth the effort, depending how much do you
value your KDE configuration. But as a very last resort you can
 always rm -rf ~/.kde.

hrmm...I'd like to help root cuase the problem since it seems konqueror
controls the validity of the config files, not me. I don't muck with
them by hand. I don't think I have anything special outside of the
history (helps me find sites instead of bookmarking them all)

thanks,
grant

The only part of KDE that wasn't 100% ready to go into sarge was kdebase
due to dependency on lm-sensors. I uploaded a fixed kdebase 3.1.5-2 so
now there is nothing left holding it back.

Get to naggin ;)
