amd64 install hangs installing base system

2009-06-04 Thread gcrimp
Hi,

I'm trying to install 5.0.1, amd64 to an MSI motherboard with and Athlon 64
processor. I get as far as installing the base system, then at 27%,
"extracting login" the system hangs. Any thoughts?

The iso image passed and md5 check sum, and I tried burning it three times,
so I'm pretty sure there are no problems with the installation media.

Any suggestions as to the cause or how to work around it will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

g

Hi list,

I am using SID and I ask myself if there is a script or something to
list all critical bugs from all installed packages. Maybe a script
using apt-listbugs which retrieves bug reports on all packages present
in /var/cache/apt/arhives ? Or using the script smxi?
The purpose is to be notified when critical bugs are reported after I
have done an upgrade of a package.
Thanks in advance for any idea.

That's just it. There's no reason to work with them as with files, so
there's no reason to have them on filesystem.

Re: Date always wrong after reboot. [SOLVED]

2009-06-04 Thread Nuno Magalhães
Solved it...

This wasn't related to the clock at all. I do cut power to the PC when
it's off and began wondering if that hat drained the CMOS battery, but
that would make BIOS settings reset, not advance the OS clock by one
hour. The CMOS time is correct in the BIOS.

While checking another issue (swap wouldn't mount) i discovered a lot
of programs, hwclock included, had 000 permissions in /sbin. Problem
solved. I believe it was Bastille leftovers.

Thank you for your rapid suggestions and time.

Your system is operating. You start to get either SMART indications
that the drive is dying or errors (e.g. retries, times-out, etc) in
syslog. You add a drive to the system at least as big as the failing
drive. You make it a physical volume for LVM, and add it to the VG of
the failing drive. You then tell LVM to remove the failing drive from
the LV. LVM will migrate the data, extent by extent, from the old drive
to the new drive, all while the system is still active. Its all in the
LVM-HOWTO (tldp, in the doc-linux-html package).

I put /tmp on tmpfs, with encrypted swap (so that /tmp ends up encrypted
also). Yes, /usr (4G) , /var (4-6G, depending ), and /home (encrypted)
are on separate LVs. Sizes depend on what I'm doing. /usr mostly holds
instaled packages so 4G is fine for my desktop system.

I also have /var/tmp and /var/local as separate LVs, encrypted. I keep
my backups in /var/local. KDE keeps lots of otherwise private stuff in
/var/tmp.

info on network-connected web cameras, esp. config. and access protocols?

2009-06-04 Thread Barclay, Daniel
Does anyone here know of good articles/site about network-connected
web cameras, in particular, what protocols they use (what interface
they provide) for configuation and for access?

In particular:

For configuration, do they typically use an operating-system-independent
interface such as a built-in web server and web application (like an
HTML/HTTP-configured router), or do they use an operating-system-system
setup problem--oops, I meant to type "program," but "problem" fits too
well to correct with no comment first...--?

For access, what's their interface? Is it just a server for some
video streaming protocol? It is also an HTTP server serving an HTML
page that contain some object that refers to the video server's
access point?

Thanks,
Daniel

I did:

 # aptitude purge mplayer

Does this mean that not *all* the configuration stuff was removed, as supposed

All _global_ system configuration was removed (residing in /etc). Debian
(or aptitude in this case) will *never* remove anything from your /home.

You should do something like 'rm -rf .mplayer' yourself (or move the
folder to the trash, or ...)

That's because bash reads the completion code only once, when it starts
up. Try starting a fresh shell, e.g. with "exec bash".

1. Read 'man 1 rc-alert'. Clearly, you can include/exclude distributions.
Unless you are running a mixed or out-of-date system, that should be enough
to filter to bugs that affect your system.

2. Read 'man 1 apt-listbugs'. Clearly, you can limit the serveries of the
bugs reported and, using either the 'apt' or 'list' command, control exactly
which packages/versions are scanned for bugs.

This *might* do what you want:
aptitude search --disable-columns -F '%p/%V' '~i' | \
xargs /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs -s critical list

Please, the documentation wasn't made just to keep developers busy, read it
sometime.

Memory failure?

Do a memory test, and check your hard drive using any tool you may have.

Also try using a live CD to disgard any issue with hardware compability.

I suppose you meant 'wrong'. What is the correction? How about the
following?

~$ cat /etc/apt/preferences
Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 200

and to use "-t" with the package I want.

Would this work in tracking the newer version of the kernel package from
unstable once I install it using -t?

Yes. Once you installed kernel with -t from unstable aptitude will tracking
any upgrades to this kernel. It will stop if the kernel migrates from

So the mouse is /dev/input/event0. That probably means that the
event3/event4 double keyboard occurrence in your Xorg.0.log is not
necessarily cause for concern. Also, google turns up a number of xorg
log files with the same double entries. (I suspect that event4 is
related to the multimedia key on the keyboard.)

Unfortunately, no clue here, either.

Earlier you mentioned that the problem started after a system upgrade.
Was the keyboard working with the evdev driver before, or was that
driver introduced for the first time during the same upgrade? Which
options did you have in the keyboard section of xorg.conf when you used
this keyboard with the "kbd" driver?

Try changing the log level in cupsd.conf to debug and follow the log while
printing. You may also turn on debug logging by running

sudo cupsctl --debug-logging

wt...@dj:~$ sudo cupsctl --debug-logging
cupsctl: Unable to connect to server: No route to host

It seems that might be why the error_log doesn't show any error. The
user account can't get to the cups server. Now to figure out why!

I'm going to start a root X session and see if the X apps will print.
That should narrow down the problems if that works.

Will report back when I get more data.

Thanks again!!

No offense, but you've misunderstood how it works:

Pressing the TAB key produces the same error as above. All the keyboard is
altered under that Grub prompt: e.g.: if i want to type `-' I have to type `?'
on my keyboard. So the problem *might* be that the TAB key is associated to
something else. *Might*, and it's impossible to me to find what.

yes I know, I read 'man rc-alert' before asking this question.
Indeed, the reason of my problem is that sometimes I have an out-of-date
system. That's why I can't use 'rc-alert -d U'.
Your solution is what I was looking for.
Thanks

AltGr broken in GTK apps (?) since yesterday's upgrade

2009-06-04 Thread Davide Mancusi
Running Sid. I upgraded some 400 packages yesterday and since
then the AltGr key has stopped working in some applications, notably
Iceweasel and Claws Mail (i.e. the applications I use 90% of the
time, of course). Specifically, when I press AltGr + any key, nothing
happens. Note that neither Iceweasel nor Claws were upgraded. Could it
be related to GTK?

Has anyone experienced the same behaviour?

Cheers,
Davide

leonardo,

As Rob said, your questions are not very clear. You original post is
probably not getting much action because 1) it's not clear and 2)
configuring Postfix is such a basic/normal thing that it has been discussed
like crazy.

A simple google of 'debian postifix' lead to many, many, many how-to's,
manuals, general docs . . . the first of which is
http://wiki.debian.org/Postfix

Your freeBSD posts are very well recieved for the same reasons.

3) it hijacked another thread.

4) there are manual pages, there also is the package 'postfix-doc' with
all the documentation. Please, the documentation wasn't made just to
keep developers busy, read it sometime.

Note, that there is a wikipedia page on what a MTA is and does, and
another one about postfix, including links to basic configuration.

You could try to use this configuration again, provided that you still
have the xserver-xorg-input-kbd package installed. In that case you
should furthermore add

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
   Option "AutoAddDevices""off"
   Option "AllowMouseOpenFail""true"
EndSection

to /etc/X11/xorg.conf to disable the HAL device discovery mechanism.
(You will probably also have to add a section for the mouse again.)

Another thing that might give us a clue is taking a closer look at the
second keyboard-type device (event4) that is mentioned in your Xorg log.
Please post the output of:

lshal --show $(hal-find-by-property --key "input.device" --string
"/dev/input/event4")

Now I understand what you mean. So basically you do lvm on raid5 to get
a balance between storage space and redundancy.

So you use LVM on raid to help you better cope with hard drive failures.

I understand now.

gnome accessibility update

2009-06-04 Thread Jude DaShiell
I just managed to install gnome-orca again and gnome-accessibility too and
in a little bit I'll find out how nicely they'll play together. Two notes
though on these recent updates for the package builders. 1) The
gnome-accessibility package is an essential prerequisite for gnome-orca
without it gnome-orca goes silent. 2) in one of the package's
installation scripts the command print-installation-architecture was
found. That is now an obsolete command and ought to be changed to
print-architecture or so debian squeeze tells me at installation time.
The command I used to do all of this is essential to know; aptitude
install gnome-audio gnome-accessibility gnome-orca -r. was what got it all
done.

I'm just curious about how many users will "fall" for my
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_bug From what I've seen, about half the

the other half don't. When I ask the half that do if they noticed

so I'll ask this list instead. Of course I wouldn't put such a header on
this message, lest I DOS attack myself (as there are many lurkers using
other leading brand MUAs...). I only put it on when there is some old
professor who hasn't replied to my mail for a long time, and I want to
be sure he is still ticking. By the way, I would post to a more

You don't need to do all that roundabout nonsense. Just use lspci -v and look
for the device in question and look for the "Kernel driver in use"
line. Note that
a few devices, notably the video card, will not have a driver listed
even if working.

An example from my computer:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device d701
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at e032 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities:
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

The last line says "Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel". That means that the kernel
sees the device and that the HDA Intel driver has been loaded for it.

Not to be disagreeable, but I had a bad experience with memtest86+ when
I added a second 2x2GB set to my first 2x2GB set. The memtest86+ would
fail with all 8GB inserted, but would pass with either 4GB set inserted.

I tried an alternative, memtester, and it ran through all of the 8GB it
could access just fine. I've been running 8GB on this desktop for over
a year with not problems at all, so it was just a bug in memtest86+ ...
no doubt related to some hardware incompatibility with my particular parts.

The experience you are describing sounds quite similar, so I hope your
conclusion that you had bad memory was correct!

At least the first time, Outlook will ask before sending a "read
receipt", but the same dialog box also has an "always" checkbox, so if
you check that receipts will be sent without you knowing.

As far as I can tell, mutt doesn't have any support for this, but I
think I could make something up using colors and macros ;)
