You said there was an ATA limit of 16 partitons on Lenny, but the HD on

Two Lenny problems

2010-03-02 Thread Cecil Knutson
Stephen,
Just finished installing Lenny on my Fujitsu which has on-board sound;
alsamixer says: PCM (100), Surround (MM), Center (MM), LFE (MM), Side
(MM), IEC958 (MM), IEC958D (00), PC Speak (100); Sound Preferences, in
the Sound Capture section, has a test sound choice which produced a
tone!; I opened up Epiphany to YouTube, made a selection and it played!
Sound works!! The lack of a PCM on the Dell seems to be the critical
error, as you said. The lspci output has the audio controller as an
Intel 82801FB and a multimedia controller as Phillips SAA7134/SAA7135HL
Video Broadcast Decoder. My brother will get another sound card soon
and I will try the Dell again just to see what difference it makes. And
Epiphany didn't hang when directed to hp.com or debian.org.

kismet & gpsd

2010-03-02 Thread Dale
Hi all,

I have a problem when using kismet 2008-05-R1-4.1 and gpsd
2.90.1~svn6819-1+b1 under Debian squeeze (testing)

When having gpsd enabled in kismet it causes gpsd to run at high cpu
usage ie 70 - 100%

Has anyone else come across this problem, and how do I stop kismet
from running gpsd at such high cpu usage? beside turning off gpsd in
kismet.

SpamAssassin not following private whitelist commands

2010-03-02 Thread Ron Johnson

Hi,

SA, which is "attached" to Postfix, isn't doing what I think it
should do. According to instructions I found on the Intarweb,
per-user whitelist addresses go in ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs with
the format:

whitelist_from f...@bar.com

(Yes, I restarted SA after adding the entries, and the machine has
even been rebooted since then.)

However, whitelisted accounts are still being scored as spam. Any
thoughts?

This is the problem. Issue an "ip -6 route del default" and you should
be all set.

I suspect at some point your host accepted an RA packet (possibly with
the 'M' flag set, which may explain the lack of an autoconfigured global
address) and set the default route to the LL address of the advertising
router.

Wow. If you haven't already, you should immediately backup the box before
trying some magic on it. It's probably located at
~/.mozilla-thunderbird/$profile/Mail/Local Folders/Inbox.

What's the size of the box? If it looks too small, open it with a text
editor or another mail agent and check if your older mails are actually in
there.

If nothing is lost, you could firstly try compacting the box in thunderbird
(right click on it, then "Compact"). That might fix the error as a
side-effect, but I wouldn't bet too much money on it.

Can't think of anything clever, maybe someone has an idea.

Bonne chance.

Apparently the newest updates have made it hard for me to run kde
effects and I suspect that it is kde effects that crashed in the first
place. I followed the advice that Thierry have and after deleting my
.kde4 folder I was able to log into kde, but of course I had to set up
the entire session again (gtk and qt co-ordination, layouts and
switching, default apps, etc), which was rather tedious. However, I am
unable to run kde effects the way I used to. When I try to enable them
through system settings, first I see that the "Compositing state" area
is grayed out and bearing the message "compositing is disabled".
Here's the relevant screenshot:

http://s128.photobucket.com/albums/p190/Bulgarian_Toothpaste/?action=view¤t=nocompositing.png

If I click on "apply" right there I'll get a message saying that
compositing couldn't be activated and the entire GUI crashes, forcing
me to either kill the X server or restart/power down with keyboard
combinations. If, however, I play a smart one and choose "xrender" in
the "advanced" tab, I'm able to start compositing. Numerous effects
don't work, though, including desktop cube and wobbly windows (I get
notifications from the kde windows manager that they could not be
started).

Now, I do realize that this is a debian and not an ubuntu list, yet I
don't see why I shouldn't be frustrated when my functionality (cube)
and aesthetics (wobbly) are suddenly broken. I can work without
effects, but why should I not have the option to use them in their
entirety?

My system runs on an Nvidia GT 220 with the latest drivers downloaded
from their website:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_190.53.html

Any information as to what might've been broken by the newest updates
would be greatly appreciated. I'm probably registering on the KDE
forum to ask the same questions as well.

Cheers,

Jason

host trying to connect using IPv6 without having IPv6 global address

2010-03-02 Thread Γιώργος Πάλλας
Hello to all!

I am having the following strange problem on a fully updated squeeze.

It sits behind an ordinary adsl router, with no IPv6 capabilities, it
gets its private 192.168.x.x address etc.

Now the problem is that it tries to connect to hosts returning quad-A
records using IPv6, but it has no IPv6 global address. Ifconfig shows
only the normal 'link' IPv6 address. So, eventually it does not connect.

For example, using the browser I can't go to http://www.ipv6.org

Aptitude update stalls, writing:

84% [Connecting to security.debian.org (2001:610:1908:a000::149:225)]

Or even:

$ telnet security.debian.org
Trying 2001:610:1908:a000::149:225...

I would appreciate any help, because this problem starts to get me!

Below, in the bz2 file, I give a transcript of various useful command
outputs, if someone bothers to dive into it! I include a telnet strace,
netstat IPv6 output, ifconfig, my IPv6 routing table, and other things.
Something I suspect is this entry in my routing table:
::/0   fe80::4432:f215:1283:2320  UGDAe 1024
090 eth2

should that be there?

Thanks for any help,
Giorgos

OK, first of all, there's obviously a bug somewhere.
But the machine not powering off is no big deal. Once it halts you
simply turn it off. But losing hyperthreading is obviously not good.

Well, you could try using APM instead of ACPI, if your BIOS supports it.
That might get you an automated power-off. But probably not
hyperthreading. Probably not worth it.

But there are newer kernels in Sid that you can try, such as
linux-image-2.6.32-2-vserver-amd64 and linux-image-2.6.32-3-vserver-amd64.

2010-03-02 Thread campbell mcleay
Hi,

I am running 64-bit Debian Squeeze with kernel
linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-vserver-amd64, and when
I initiate a shutdown to halt/poweroff the system, either within a
Gnome session or on the console,
it reboots instead of powering off. I can see what looks like a kernel
oops error message at the
very end of the shutdown process, and then it reboots (it is too quick
for me to see the exact error).
My suspicion was that ACPI was the issue, so I disabled it at boot
with 'acpi=off', and indeed it no longer
reboots when I issue shutdown to halt it, but I lose hyperthreading
and it won't power off at all. I have
used Ubuntu 9.04 and 10.04 (which uses 2.6.32 kernel) to test the
hardware as well, and these shut
the machine down with no issue. I would use another linux-image
package, but there seems to be only
one for Squeeze (aside from a vserver image).

Any suggestions on a way round this? I don't want to boot with
'acpi=off', as it won't shutdown and
hyperthreading won't work.

Hardware is dual Xeon x5550 with 6GB ram and SSD hard disk.

Cheers,

Campbell

Hmm, I think I misunderstood your original comment, let me retry:

With the same amount of resources (the same number of DDs), but less
time of course you have to cut somewhere. One possibility would be
reducing the amount of new features, as in not package the absolutely
latest version of softwares, but focus on versions that are already
known to be stable.

It seems though that the lenny -> squeeze migration will not be the
easiest as there are several major changes that you just can't avoid
(ex. KDE3 -> KDE4) and probably this is why the freeze date has been
postponed.

What I'm trying to say is that, yes it seems like the Release Team is
pushing a bit to *freeze* as soon as possible, but I do trust them to
not release squeeze until ready.

Andrei

Hey,

Yes, I think it would, the versions you installed would be very old, for
example, ia32-libs is on version 2.7 even in lenny, compared to version 1.19
that the site has listed.

Grab the newest versions of the libs which match the version of debian you
are running from http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages and give it another
go ;)

(Note, I am assuming you grabbed the listed version of the package rather
than the newest version, if this is not the case and you got the newest
version, then I apologize for my mistake.)

Angus

The most of the packages at debian-multimedia are free (as in free
speech), but they *might* cause troubles due to patents. That's why
mplayer in Debian main is compiled differently and some things like lame
are not available at all.

Hello,

though I'm mainly talking to myself here, I got some updates.
I manually compiled/installed the vim versions 6.4, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2.
Running version 6.4 and 7.0 with a slightly modified vimrc from the etch
version (vimrc.dpkg-old) (leaving out some debian specific things), I
get back the bash script syntax highlighting I was used to in sarge and
etch.
However vim versions 7.1 and 7.2 seem to have changed. I get different
results with both. I don't know if this is caused by the sh.vim or the
actual vim code, but however it does not seem to be a debian specific
problem, as far as I can tell.
Guess I need to find the time to talk to the people in the vim mailing list.

Good day

Mart

Another way of doing that is:

  mv /etc/issue /etc/issue.original
  clear > /etc/issue
  cat /etc/issue.original >> /etc/issue

Then the console will clear when /etc/issue is read.

Although I do not usually change my shell so while I think it is a bit more
portable if you use something like csh, etc. I am not absolutely positive.

This is true only for the root user. If you logout from a virtual
terminal as a normal user, the screen clears. If you logout from
a virtual terminal as root, the screen does not clear. That's because
root does not have the standard .bash_logout file. It's easy to fix.
Just copy it from your non-superuser self. For example, if your
normal user account is "carlos", then issue this command as root:

   cp /home/carlos/.bash_logout ~

I can't remember if it takes effect on the logout from this session,
but it will for sure on logout after the next login.

Hey,

Well, really it allows a quick and easy way to move back and forwards
between nv and the nVidia binary driver.

The reason its so large is that it does ATI/nVidia free and non free drivers
for multiple distros.

But really its just there to make life easier ;)

Hey,

As far as I know, Lenny and squeeze do not have the newest nVidia binary
driver packaged, and I think you need the newest ( 19X.XXX ) driver to use
that card, I cant check because nVidias website seems to be down at the
moment though.

There is two ways to install the nVidia driver the "nVidia way" rather than
the debian way.

1) The easy automatic way, with sgfxi:

http://techpatterns.com/forums/about933.html

2) The Manual "nVidia" way:

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/debian-linux-help/113053-apt-get-older-versions-applications.html#post548590

I
use #1 without any problems.

(note this email assumes you are looking for the nVidia binary driver,
though sgfxi can also install and setup the nv free driver as well, read the
page)

Well, you did *not* purge the exim4 packages if these files exist.
Run "dpkg --purge exim4{,-base,-config,-daemon-light}" and see if
anything is left then.

See my earlier reply on why this might not get all the exim files. Summary:
Most of the files aren't in a package called "exim4".

Use (aptitude search '~c') to see programs in the "Configured" state --
removed but not purged. Use (aptitude purge '~c') to remove those confiles.

It's been a while since I've used the installer (I preseed my installations at
the office), but isn't there a point in expert mode where you can select
individual packages? Could you select 'postfix' and unselect 'exim4' at that
point? Or is that after the base system install?

You could always reinstall choosing the most basic system, than carefully
choose only the applications you actually want ands install them one by one.
And you could do aptitude -s before actually installing anything, so things
won't get pulled in that you would rather not have! You ought then to be
able to have a system pure/clean enough to gladden the heart of the most C of
OCD Linux administrators. ;-)

Those are both the same protocol has far as what's "on the wire". As a KMail
user, I'd never use "IMAP" it has minimal caching so a server round-trip is
required for most operations, including reading mail. It would only be
appropriate for a computer on the same LAN as the server, and even then only
if the client could not spare the disk space for the cache.

"disconnected IMAP" has some problems as well, but they aren't chronic the way
the performance issues are with "IMAP". Sometimes the caches/indexes get out
of sync, but there are way to fix that from the GUI.

Is the exim4 daemon still running? Try this (as root):

# /etc/init.d/exim4 stop
# aptitude purge exim4

Maybe there are files that can't be purged if the daemon is still running.

It's nothing to do with the order your installed packages. It is the
difference between removed and purged. Confiles -- files where changes by the
local administrator are preserved when upgrading -- are kept after removal.
While this category covers files that are just configuration, it also covers
init scripts and cron jobs. Confiles are not deleted when the program is
removed -- so the configuration is preserved if this is just a temporary
removal (required for some complex upgrades). Confiles are deleted when the
package is purged.

Files that are created by the program at run-time, like logs, databases, and
documents aren't tracked by the package management system, so they must be
deleted manually if you want to get rid of them.

I don't use kmail, but AIUI, it should only be loading the email
_headers_ and not the entire emails. It should only load the email
when she tries to view it. That said, if there are a whole lot of
emails, it could still take a few seconds to load all the headers. But
unless we're talking thousands of emails and a slow connection, it
should still only take a few seconds. Iwould look at kmail and see
whether it's pulling only headers or the entire emails.

disconnected IMAP might help because it would have a local copy to
load, speeding the process. But I suspect that's not really the
problem.

BTW, what do you mean by "forever?

Yes I understand now but as I stated before that installing Postfix,
Sendmail, or any other alternative MTA has no impact on the real
problem at hand. What ever MTA you choose to install, APT auto removes
Exim but leaves tons of files and directories behind. For some this is
no big deal but when you're an OCD Linux administrator, any rogue or
orphaned files like this drive you crazy.

If you did any kind of install, Exim is installed and when you attempt
to install any alternative MTA, APT will auto remove Exim but leaves
you with clutter. Also if you decide to 1st manually remove Exim from
Debian using the '--purge' option, it still leaves behind all this
mess.

debugging the problem and was able to identify the culprit:

~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals

If I remove the file I can log in normally. Unfortunately, the problem is back
once kde recreates the file. So I have to delete the file again before the next
login. So far I was unable to nail down exactly what the problem is or how to
permanently fix it.

Historical reasons, often. Most of these users and groups are expected
to exist on a Unix system. Besides, the list of static system users and
groups is really append-only: base-passwd must not remove a user or
group from existing systems for obvious reasons, so a UID or GID that
has been given out once cannot be reallocated ever.

If this were to be redesigned today, I suspect that users like news,
uucp, www-data or list would be allocated dynamically.

This is not really a very good example, because the ssh group is only
created when you install the openssh-client package. The static groups
can be seen in the file /usr/share/base-passwd/group.master.

Of *course* it doesn't (on the contrary, if I may add).
It simply means that you "can't increase the amount of donated labor at
will", since, in donated labor, payment -- and thus the possibility of
hiring any number of additional programmers when needed -- is out of
the equation.

It happens when i am outside of my lan which has a router DLink as
gateway, when i test it at inside, i recieve only 1 key for Slackware,
OpenBSD and Lenny.
Checking rsa ids, they are the same in both cases.

Could somebody please tell me what could be wrong, or if it is normal?

Thanks in advance.

Users and groups that are not created on package installation are
documented in the base-passwd package. For example, for the ssh group
you mention it contains the following information:

ssh: ssh-agent is setgid to ssh in order to prevent ptrace attacks.

Hello! /etc/group in default debain installation contains dozens of

package did some specific group came from? What purpose does it serve?
It's not very convenient to search info about group XXX in every
installed package documentation. And I didn't find corresponding info
in Debian Reference either. And even if you know the package group is
bound to it's purpose isn't completely clear.
For instance: there is an emtpy (no users) ssh group on my Debian Box.
It's clear that it's being used by the ssh package. But how? I wonder
if I can use it for AllowGroups in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. I mean will
interfere with something?

IMAP timing issue

2010-03-02 Thread Paul Cartwright
I'm not sure what to do about this, maybe I am doing something wrong..
I setup my wifes account as IMAP so she could read her email from home(Kmail)
& work (using web mail). The problem is, at home, on our debian box, she runs
Kmail. When she clicks on the inbox it takes forever to bring in all the
messages, and if she clicks on another folder NOT in her inbox, next time she
goes back, it starts over again with zero messages, retrieves them all, and
it takes forever. Part of the problem is people that send monster ( OUTLOOK)
messages with megabyte attachments..
What can I do? I'm not that familiar with IMAP, would disconnected IMAP be
better? filtering all email larger than 1Mb to her local inbox?
other ideas?

I think it depends on whether the release goal is considered RC (release
critical) or not. Even if you freeze the software versions, the release
team can still grant exceptions in such cases and even without timed
freezes, if a release goal is not ready it is not ready (dependency
based boot for lenny, just to name an example).

I don't think this is a fair comparison. Yes, it is free donated labor,
but it doesn't mean that it's worth $0!

They sure help here, otherwise the fan makes it sound like my Sun U30.

If "failing to set sensor limits" is what I think it is, then it's no
joke. You should check whether this means that your thermal trip points
are messed up (or absent altogether); if they are, your laptop may
eventually overheat and die. (However, your fan being so loud is
actually a good sign.) The *passive* trip point is particularly crucial
in this context. I jotted down some indications about trip points and
such on the website you'll find in my signature (once there, look for
the heading "Laptops In Heat").

You can either create a new user to see what happen, or move away your .kde
and .kde4 folders, and see if it works.
Then you will have a starting point to analyze the problem.

KDE session dead

2010-03-02 Thread Jason Filippou
Hello list,

After updating my debian squeeze box yesterday I'm having trouble
logging into my KDE session. More specifically, after I choose "KDE"
from the available sessions from kdm, the kde splash screen begins
loading but then I get a white screen followed by a completely black
screen, with which I can't interact, since it's all, like, black. The
"logged in" music tune plays just fine though, which makes me feel
there's something wrong with a KDE update as far as the desktop
display's concerned. I had KDE effects turned on, if that's helping
towards the right direction.

Currently posting from a GNOME session. Anyboy with a problem similar
to mine after recent upgrades? Anything I can do to revive my KDE
session?

Thanks,

Jason

This is probably a result of me installing postfix without uninstalling exim
first. It's surprising that the apt scripts that installed postfix and
removed exim left all this other stuff which can't possibly work now without
that exim binary being present.
