Kghostview is very useful, the way it can watch a file and refresh its display if the file changes. If the file changes kghostview doesn't refresh for a few seconds. Re: OT: don't understand something about xpdf
cutting and pasting from a pdf - both text and image - is fairly easy using the tools/utils from xpdf. Under X I can drag my mouse over the _text_ in a pdf file. Then in an xemacs window I can double click and the text is pasted in there. (A very useful facility.) How come ? Surely the text in the pdf file is not ascii ? Surely even the text is stored as a graphic in the pdf file ? I am obviously misunderstanding something. Joe Mc Cool -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: playing midi with timiditySOLVED
Please note I have started another tread re timidity and rosegarden4. It has nothing to do with this one (different machine), and largely sussed. The timidity in debian is supposed to have working alsa support. Heck, I use it... It is supposed to have both alsa output driver support (play to an alsa device), and alsa *sequencer* support (which is what -iA enables). Debian timidity alsa-sequencing by default uses -iA -B2,8 -Os as paramenters. It is controlled by /etc/default/timidity and /etc/init.d/timidity. I'll confess, at this stage, I have googled so much and tried so many things that I am really rather tired, confused and frustrated and my poor old brain is just about frazzled ! Sorry, I don't know what iec958 is. I have used alsamixer and muted all the inputs I can. Essentially my perl script is: system(timidity -L /usr/share/timidity -Ou -o$au_file $midi_file /tmp/timidity 2 /dev/null); system(play -v $volume $au_file ); What is the reason for sending the output to a file and then playing back the file instead of letting timidity send the output directly to the audio device? A mixture of ignorance and laziness. This script has been working for years under a 2.20 kernel. There was no need to change it. issues there. If the file is being played back as it is being created that could lead to some oddities, but would then lead to a question of why does it work with an older kernel using the OSS driver and not with the 2.6 kernel using the alsa driver. I create the midi files using abc2midi. But I have tested using midi from other sources as well and the result is the same: awful, hardly recognisable sound. I normally do not pipe to timidity. I've tried it and the result is again, almost unrecognisable sound quality. This is a pretty standard set of modules. I've used Ensoniq based hardware in the past and currently have one system with an Ensoniq chipset for the onboard audio. I have had issues with static in the audio when the capture level is not set at a low level and the iec958 stuff is not muted, but that doesn't account for bit of the file being played again. If I revert to a 2.2 kernel and use the oss drivers, everything is fine. This leads to the question, if you use the 2.6 kernel with the OSS driver does it work then? Don't have the available. But with 2.6 and alsa I can use mplayer and listen to BBC Radio 3, no problem. This just seems odd. What about audio in other applications? If it only sounds bad with Timidity while using your script that would seem to indicate the issue is in the Timidity configuration or in the script. My hunch is that it is my Timidity configuration, or possibly the age of my box. It is an old PII. But I would have thought that Timidity could have been configured to perform even with that vintage of hardware. My /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg contains: ### ## If you have a slow CPU, uncomment these: opt EFresamp=d #disable resampling opt EFvlpf=d#disable VLPF opt EFreverb=d #disable reverb opt EFchorus=d #disable chorus opt EFdelay=d #disable delay #opt no-antialias #disable sample anti-aliasing opt EWPVSETOZ #disable all Midi Controls opt p32a#default to 32 voices with auto reduction opt s32kHz #default sample frequency to 32kHz opt fast-decay #fast decay notes ### I have tried pmidi, it just hangs. I have reinstalled both timidity and alsa. I have pulled down the timidity source and compiled it afresh. I have tried runing timmidity as a server. The effect is the not always the same, but the end result is always - very badly distorted, repeating sound. Thanks a lot. Re: playing midi with timidity
Please, when I try to play sound with alsa under a 2.6 kernel, the quality is awful, the system seems to repetitively play little snatchs of my tune over and over, superimposing some of the sound on top of what it has already played. Essentially my perl script is: system(timidity -L /usr/share/timidity -Ou -o$au_file $midi_file /tmp/timidity 2 /dev/null); system(play -v $volume $au_file ); lsmod | grep snd: snd_seq_oss34656 0 snd_seq_midi8576 0 snd_seq_midi_event 7680 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi snd_seq53872 6 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event snd_ens137124932 0 snd_rawmidi25124 2 snd_seq_midi,snd_ens1371 snd_seq_device 8200 3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi snd_pcm_oss55080 0 snd_mixer_oss 20096 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm98728 2 snd_ens1371,snd_pcm_oss snd_page_alloc 11752 1 snd_pcm snd_timer 25732 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_ac97_codec 69988 1 snd_ens1371 snd57156 13 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq,snd_ens1371,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec soundcore 10336 1 snd gameport4704 1 snd_ens1371 If I revert to a 2.2 kernel and use the oss drivers, everything is fine. confused on mailman
Please, sarge, mailman, exim4: all I wish to do is set up a simple mailing list for family use. Any family subscriber can post a message and any family subscriber can respond. Much like debian-user. so far I have: apt-get install mailman I've read: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/108 and carried out all the instructions except adding the following lines to my apache config file: Alias /pipermail/ /var/lib/mailman/archives/public/ Alias /images/mailman/ /usr/share/images/mailman/ 1. I don't know where the apache config file lives and 2. I don't want the mail list archive to be public I've added the aliases (manually - newlist does not add them) to /etc/aliases and I have run newaliases. I have restarted mailman and exim4. I can send mail to the list: ls | mail -s test sheep and no errors are returned similarly (as joe): ls | mail -s subscribe sheep-subscribe returns no errors. But I get no acknowledgement and subsequent mails to sheep are not mailed to me as a subscriber. Confused :-( I need an idiots guide. I can run X ok and startkde, but I need kdm to provide user logins a la kde. A line in /etc/init.d/kdm features the debug level. I uncommented this and now kdm presents a login fine (irrespective of kernel), but very, very slowly. But - wait for it - I re-commented the bebug line and kdm still works, and still very, very slowly. Strange ! At least I am making progress. Thanks for a super system. All of kdm's internally generated messages (i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*. A grep for kdm in /var/log/* reveals nothing bar the messages above in syslog. Note that I can start X ok and run ordinary applications like xterm, kde etc. in /etc/init.d if I try ./kdm start it tells me that kdm is already runing and a ps -ef | grep kdm confirms this, but I have no kdm login. If I try ./kdm restart it reports that it has restarted, but the ps -ef | grep kdm reports on kdm processes running and again, no kdm login. All I am stuck for is the kdm login. thanks a lot.
