Neither. "paride" is for an IDE adapter connected to the parallel
port, if I remember correctly. And XT is the old pre-IDE adapter used
back in the days when 8086 and 80286 were common and 386's were around
but rare, and expensive (I may be a bit off on my timeline, but it's
OLD technology and VERY rare these days). So, unless you have a really
old system, you won't need them. I do believe the IDE support is built
right into the installation kernel so you won't need to load a module
for it if you are using IDE disks, which is what you're doing with the
menu you're in. It's pretty rare to have to load a block device
module during the installation.

The usual answer in Free Software Projects is:
When it is ready, no sooner, no later.

Our plans strive to have a new version ready in 3-4 month.
Please have a look at the lists archives of debian-devel-announce.
Or if you want, update to unstable.

Do you use LANG or LOCALE?

I have a similar problem here with java ICQ.
If I use LANG=de_DE some fonts are not displayed. But I can't edit

Legal advise is fundamentally an opinion about a particular situation, so no
:) However, the usual way of doing this is instead of talking about hte actual
facts, to propose a hypothetical situation and discuss the legal principals
which would govern it.

Once it stands in court and wins, you've already lost--defending these is
expensive even when you win, and you don't get attorney's fees in most US
jurisdictions.

I would say yes...but...thats me...
My views tend to disagree strongly with lawyers, politicians, judges, etc
I tend to care more about the morality and intent of issues than the
"legal side"

> But this sure depends on good wording and might have to stand in

Yes true...it doesn't matter what it means in the real world...it matters what
it means in that weird universe known as "court"where things like
truth and justice takeon some really twisted meanings

..sigh...life would be so much simpler if people didn't feel this perverse
need to have laws and government. At least it is comforting to know that
lawmakers, lawyers, etc will be "the first ones up against the wall when the
revolution comes" (no empire lasts forver...I just hope the current ones don't
last much longer)

it is so silly to think that someone can, in good faith, try to help people out
by compiling information for them, can do this without being asked, for
free...and can be sued for it by some ingrateful slime

am I the only one who sees the sad irony in that?

on a more practical note
I have to wonder, are there any cases where someone wrote something like this,
and distributed it freely to anyone who wished to have it, for no charge (not
necissarilly on the net but preferably) and been sued for bad legal advice?

Moreover have any of these disclaimers seen all over the internet on pretty
much every document, ever been "tested in court". I ask mostly because courts
tend to be very weird in that all of the "legal analysis" in the world really
tends to mean jack shit until a real case comes up and it happens in court.

I guess keeping that in mind...if this specific case has not been "tested in
court" then the person writting it and putting their name on it should
be prepared to have to test it (tho personally I doubt it would happen)

course...I supose now it might be too late for it to be published
anonymously? sigh...is there anything now that is as good as anon.penet.fi used
to be a coupla years back? (of course that all assumes the person intending to
write it was willing to not put their name on it..I forget who started
this threadbut...thats probably what I would do if it came down to it)

then again...it would probably be best done that way...and to just find some
apropriate place to ask users to publicly post recommendations for additions
..that way they can't ask you directly for clarification (which woul dbe that
much more so legal advice)

actually..thats not true...if it were _ME_ I would just write it and releace
it and say "screw the law". I tend to just live my life and do what I do, if
what I do is "legal" fine...if not...thats fine too...cuz I don't care
I care more about moral than legal

(as it is I have a web page in my name even with my adress on it, where I
openly admit to having done things, some of which are illegal...including
drug use, attempts to grow marijuana (been away from that stuff for a while
but I left it on the web page even tho I don't do it anymore). Also on
one of the pages I am most proud of giving tips on how to disrupt the
operations of the DEA (for fun...I myself never did any of them)
and the "disclaimer" I have was written almost exclusivly as a joke because
I thought it was funny) ...I have never been sued or had any legal actions
brought agaisnt me whatsoever

(BTW what´s DA?)
Can you get around this hanging sword above ones head, by expressing ones
opinion?

You can at least get around to be sued because of offence (or insult),
by expressing your opinion:
If you say "This boy is an a**hole!", you sure commit an offence.
If you say "I think he behaves like an a**hole!", you express your
opinion and get around.

But this sure depends on good wording and might have to stand in
court.

I think it´s at least worth while to collect some (meta-)information
in a copyright howto.

1. Access to peripherals, etc., is via "special" files for devices,
like /dev/ttyS1 for the second serial port and /dev/hdc for the
first IDE or ATAPI device on the second controller. A modem device
is a character special file because I/O is generally a character at
a time. A disk device is a block special file because I/O is
generally in blocks (of e.g. 2 sectors = 1024 bytes). There are
   good hysterical reasons for this.

2. If the CD is on the first IDA controller it's probably /dev/hdb; on
the second it's probably /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd. Use the appropriate
device name instead if /dev/cdrom. The Debian-supplied kernel
automatically recognises ATAPI CD-ROMs, so type "dmesg | less" to
   see where it is.

If you really want to use /dev/cdrom, do something like
  "ln -s hdc /dev/cdrom".

I also recommend you do a "chgrp cdrom /dev/hdc" so that you can put
trusted users into the cdrom group (see the adduser man page) and
give them access to the CD-ROM audio with cdplay, workman, etc.

You could check on http://www.debian.org/ under the Packages link and
see what the latest listed version is there. If you've got the latest
and it still has the bug, check under the Bug Tracking link to see if
it's been reported. If it hasn't been reported, use the "bug" program
to do so.

Check the HOWTO or the mailing list archives for libc6 before trying
to install the latest TeX packages.

It is a ATAPI drive, you just select IDE/ATAPI driver.
For accessing the iso9660 filesystem on CDs, you need the isofs filesystem
support.

The official debian latex package is tetex. Which packages did you d/l?
Without the version of the package, we can't tell you more.

I don't really know, but I believe you need to create a configuration
file specifying where jobs can come from (and other info), make it
available using TFTP, and let it know where it is with BOOTP or DHCP.

I've never had to do this; but IMO LPRng would be the right package
for implementing it, as it was developed at least with this in mind.

(Re-reading this reply, I'm thinking maybe I should just keep quiet
about things I know nothing about... Nah.)

Look at what the command pon does:

cush:~$ which pon
/usr/bin/pon
cush:~$ cat /usr/bin/pon
#!/bin/sh
if [ -r /etc/ppp.options_out -a -r /etc/ppp.chatscript ]; then
/usr/sbin/pppd connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp.chatscript" `cat
/etc/ppp.options_out`
else
echo "You do not have permissions to access /etc/ppp.chatscript or
/etc/ppp.options_out"
fi

As you can see, pon is just a little shell script that calls
/usr/sbin/pppd with the following arguments:
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp.chatscript"
and whatever is in /etc/ppp.options_out

So to find out more, look at the manpage for pppd.

Yes. That is, there's a more up to date jdk package (with a different
and to my way of thinking better organization) in hamm, and last I
checked Sun wasn't releasing any java stuff for linux - the linux-java
things are ported from the Sun reference implementation. This means
there is always a delay beyond the normal packaging delay as a new
release is first ported to Linux, and then packaged for Debian.

By the way, the hamm jdk package installs and runs just fine on my
all-libc5 (bo) system.

Do you have your host's name specified in /etc/hostname?

setting up pcmcia - hostname(none)- problem

1997-12-24 Thread Marc Fleureck
Hi,

There has been a great amount of progress since I have tried to
configure my pcmcia card (3c562) thanks to great help I received from
people on this list. Thanks !
However, there is still a problem. I get the following errors at boot
time:

> > hostname: can't open '(null)'
> > SIOCSIFADDR: no such device
> > SIOCSIFNETMASK: no such device
> > SIOCSIFBRADDR: no such device
> > SIOCADDRT: network unreachable

/etc/hosts is OK, /etc/pcmcia/network.opts too. No error messages in
/var/adm/messages, except maybe the following indication :

Linux PCMCIA Card Services 2.9.12
Kernel build: 2.0.32 unknown
etc. etc. (no errors)
loading device 'eth0' ...
eth0: 3com 3c562, .. irq, base address, etc

Regards,
marc

Probably not. It is most likely a result of your system running
/etc/cron.daily/find, which updates the database used by "locate"; this
update is done as "nobody" for security reasons.
