I'm still learning. If you can bring your laptop near a well connected linux computer, you can set up a link over the parrallel interface with plip. You'll get 40kB/s transfer rate. You could look by some newsdealers if there is a magazine with a CD that includes the newest .deb files of XFree86. Sorry! But i can't give you a suggestion which magazine at this time has a CD with XFree86 for Debian. Timo -- Wer Käse mag, der futtert auch Füsse! :-)

I'm still learning. Do you have access somewhere else to a cd burner? I believe there is a cd image floating around of extra debs for potato, and I think this includes recent versions of xfree. See recent posts on debianplanet.org. But really, if I were you I'd give high priority to getting your modem working. I think it would be perfectly possible to download xfree even over a 28.8. Apt and other debian tools are quite intelligent in that they know if you have done part of a download and can pick up where they left off if interrupted. So you could do this in several stages. A more important question is, how expensive is your dialup access? Here in the US it is relatively cheap, but in Germany I think it will be more expensive. so maybe a CD image would be better because of that. Contact me if you think I can be of further help. This could be because /etc/X11/X doesn't exist. It seems that by default X4 lokks for the server in this spot. Try symlinking /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 to /etc/X11/X if /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 isn't there then you need to install the actual X server (this didn't happen automatically for me when I upgrade) so apt-get install xserver-xfree86 cheers Today people in droves hurry up past Heumoz to Villars on the road to the ski hills, so they can rush down them as fast as possible, so they can hurry up again in order to rush down again. Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] I thought your problem was interesting because I had not noticed any slowdowns with mp3 or netscape. In fact, I run gkrellm and I keep a close watch @ the numbers. After reading your mail, I openned top to see for myself what you are talking about and noticed that X was NI=0. But in a matter of seconds (while top was running) the value became -10! I also upgraded X, just few days ago. XFree86-4.02, a laptop and an external monitor
Hi all, I've a problem while connecting an external monitor to my laptop. I had a configuration working for XFree86 3.3.6 that allowed me to use my laptop at a 1024x768 resolution. If I connected an external monitor to it, and with the LDC-display disabled, X worked with a 1280x1024 resolution on the external monitor. I see in the XFree86.x.log that both my LCD and external display are detected (the external display gets detected first), but I can't get X using my external display at 1280x1024. I'm running XFree86 4.02 (ATI 64 driver) from unstable. Any ideas? -- Jordi
Xfree86 4.02?
Hello all, does anyone know where i can apt-get Xfree 4.02? I tried installing 4.01 however i ended up with a broken X, i believe that was due to the lack of an X_server but i'm not certain. Has anyone has previously installed 4.01 (or preferably 4.02) succesfully that can tell me how to do the same? William Leese
Re: Xfree86 4.02?
The debs are in debian/pool: you can get them by adding unstable to your apt sources list (apt-setup will do it fine for you). I did it by hand, because I didn't want to change my apt settings, the files I got are: libfreetype6_2.0.1-1.debxserver-common_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xbase-clients_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xserver-xfree86_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xfree86-common_4.0.2-1_all.deb xterm_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xfs_4.0.2-1_i386.debxutils_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xlibs_4.0.2-1_i386.deb xvfb_4.0.2-1_i386.deb I don't think that _all_ are necessary and I guess that you could add some more After you've dpkg-ed everything (or apt-ed), run xf86cfg or XF86Setup. They will probe and/or ask for your hardware and write the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. End of Plug, start of Play: I had some problems with that but it was because of the bloody nv/nvidia drivers that were rotten. I also had a problem that X4 didn't flush X3 correctly, so that startx was calling X3.3.6. Fixed it by symlinking /usr/X11R6/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86. It feels a bit dirty though. Anyway in case of problem, take a peek at /var/log/XFree86.?.log HTH Romain William Leese wrote: Hello all, does anyone know where i can apt-get Xfree 4.02?
