i686 is 32 bit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P6_(microarchitecture)

Duron is to Athlon as Celeron is to Pentium 3, that is reduced cache, and for
some models, lower bus speed, for lower price point, besides 32 bit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duron

Because a Duron is a Socket A design, you could replace it with an Athlon or
early model Sempron at MHz double or more what you have now, likely for next
to free if not entirely free but for shipping and the time it takes to locate
and replace. But, Socket A does not support 64 bit chips.

I Googled that CPU and found this:

The data width states the CPU is 32 bit.

Etch, as you know, is old. The key used to sign it is now, in all
likelihood, expired. It's probably been expired so long, that it's been
cleared out of the debian-keyring package. You should probably try and
find a source that you trust that tells you what they key for Etch was

recent version it will take) but when issuing:

root@debian:/# debootstrap --arch i386 etch /nfsroot-x86
http://archive.debian.org/debian/

I get the following error messages:

I: Retrieving Release
I: Retrieving Release.gpg
I: Checking Release signature
E: Release signed by unknown key (key id B5D0C804ADB11277)

Any ideas what is wrong? This is my first foray into this territory

And the answer is:

The drive was not recognized as partitioned and formated as two ext3
partitions of size 1.5T.
even after I partitioned it on a modern sid system.
The old debian kernel 2.6-18-2 recognized the gpt identity, but would not mount
the drive.

Oh well, I will have to take the machine down and update before backup.

Looking at the code for 2.6.18.6 it does have support for
EFI partition scheme (GPT).

To confirm if your kernel has support for it search
EFI_PARTITION in /proc/config.gz or /boot/config
to see if EFI partition is defined.

Hi,

I need to back up a lot of data from old etch system running kernel 2.6.18-6#1
System is remote from where I am. I had them connect a 3Terabyte mybook from wd.

unfortunately I am running into the fdisk doesnt work with 3T drives problem,
so i installed
parted, and old parted on this legacy system (etch) which is 1.7.1
failed to create the partitions and
confessed to me

So I had the remote people

So my question is, will the two partitions be mountable and usable on the

Etch was EOL many years ago. Lenny came next and it is EOL also.
Squeeze is current, and Wheezy will be released within 6 months or so.
Try the Squeeze and Wheezy installers.

2.6.24 is way too old for Ivy Bridge. A little Googling will tell you
that various fixes for Ivy Bridge were still being submitted in Linux
3.5, around June/July 2012 IIRC.

Apparently there are significant differences between Sandy and Ivy
Bridge. I'm not an Intel hardware engineer so I can't say for sure.
Given that Foxconn is an Intel licensee I would think you could contact
Intel engineers directly and ask this question.

What I can say for sure is that you shouldn't be working with EOL
operating systems and kernels on the newest chipset platforms. That's
always a recipe for problems.

It looks like that package is pre-lenny (probably from etch), so you
missed the step about cleaning your system of obsolete packages before
starting the upgrade.

For the archives, 'aptitude purge ~o' will purge all packages that are
not present in any repositories you have configured.

Etch Lenny Squeeze upgrades and sysv-rc

2012-03-05 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

I don't know if it is because several of my servers started out as Etch then
got upgraded to Lenny end then to Squeeze, or if it is something in the Lenny
to Squeeze upgrade but

During most of my upgrades the sysv-rc upgrade failed at first because of the
old libdevmapper1.02 package.
The solution was simple as there was already an installed libdevmapper1.02.1
version installed at that time which did not have the problem.
So just
  # aptitude purge libdevmapper1.02
  # dpkg-reconfigure sysv-rc
and the problem is gone. However, I was unable to find anything about this in
the Squeeze upgrade notes.

Did I miss something? Or is it because they started out as Etch? I am assuming
so but the funny thing is that at the start of the upgrade I did an
  # apt-get autoremove
And that did not remove the old libdevmapper1.02 which had status c at the time
of the sysv-rc upgrade.

# aptitude search libdevmapper
v libdevmapper
   -
p libdevmapper-dev
   - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper header files
c libdevmapper1.02
   - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper userspace library
i A libdevmapper1.02.1
   - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper userspace library

Nor did
  # aptitude purge "~c"
delete that package when I ran that at the beginning of my upgrade run.
So probably the libdevmapper1.02.1 was installed during the upgrade process,
which is kinda funny as a default Lenny installation already has the 1.02.1
version.

For whoever still needs to upgrade their Lenny system to Squeeze, now you know
what it going on. I'm finished as of last week. :-)

I vaguely recall that Etherboot has become gPXE some time ago.

In my experience, a floppy with gPXE installed instantly brings
the network boot capability to older hardware.

I would poke at this more closely. Why is this failing? I have a few
obsolete Etch and even Sarge machines still hitting that archive and
they are validating the archive okay. Seems to me that part should be
working and that problem is probably the root cause of your trouble.
If you figure that out you might be golden.

You should be able to point your newer machines at the archive. All
of the package versions will be older and so nothing will want to
install. But updating should validate the release signatures. You
may need to add the old key to your apt-key though. But the older
installation would already have it.

Can you debootstrap Etch? I would think that you could. It might be
another way to validate your archive. Not as an install method for
your machine but as a way to validate that you could install from your
archive. I just tried an Etch debootstrap and it worked okay for me.

Another possibility would be Syslinux. The upstream Syslinux site is
down for me at this moment making it hard for me to check docs but as
I recall it still supports floppy disk booting and has a process to
bootstrap a network boot from a floppy disk boot. And etherboot. The
etherboot howtos are available now so I will pass those along.

Note that I haven't tried it yet. I just remember having seen it.
But it looks like it might be a way for you to install over the

Problem installing Etch using local mirror

2011-09-09 Thread Lurker_pas
Hi,

I'm trying to install Debian Etch from floppy and local mirror. It
fails with message:

"The specified Debian archive mirror is either not available, or does
not have a valid Release file on it. Please try a different mirror."

Before I get bashed for this question, I'd like to explain that I want
to install Debian on a very old laptop (Celeron 300MHz, 64MB RAM), which
doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, doesn't boot from network, doesn't boot
from USB and I can't remove its HDD. That's why I decided to use Etch,
as it still had floppy install images.

Before I tried installing it on a real hardware, I decided to test
everything on a virtual machine. First I tried a regular mirror over
http - failed (I understand that, etch is archived). Then I tried
archive.debian.org - failed. Then I created a local mirror on my bigger
Debian machine using apt-mirror. The installation failed again with the
same message. During several failed attempts, I created symbolic links
"stable" and "oldstable" to "etch". Then I spied a little using
wireshark. The installation requests the release file
"/debian/dists/oldstable/Release" - which is returned with HTTP OK. Then
it requests "/debian/dists/etch/Release", which also finishes with a
successful file transfer. Still the same error. No other files are
requested from the mirror.

I assume it's not a network or file-naming problem. What else can be
wrong? Corrupted mirror? Invalid signatures?

The beggining of the release file is as follows:

"Origin: Debian
Label: Debian
Suite: oldstable
Version: 4.0r9
Codename: etch
Date: Sat, 22 May 2010 14:22:09 UTC
Architectures: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390
sparc
Components: main contrib non-free
Description: Debian 4.0r9 Released 22nd May 2010
MD5Sum:
 88e31747739f3ea9445fe543b21061b5 10910068 Contents-powerpc.g"

I mirrored main contrib and non-free, only i386.

The VM is Virtual Box, configured for 32bit Debian with floppy, small
HDD, bridged network and 64MB RAM.

My mirror machine is 64 bit Debian on Core2Quad processor - Linux
StrikeNoir 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 14 09:42:28 UTC 2011 x86_64
GNU/Linux

The old laptop is Twinhead with Celeron processor.

If someone knows how to bypass this and install Linux on this old
laptop in a different way, I'll be happy to hear that. Still, I want to
know what is wrong with my current procedure.

Please help.

Best regards,

Michal Kurowski

Thanks for the warning, Boyd. But this is for an assessment question in a
course I am doing, not for a machine in use. The questions centre on X and
Etch, and given how much methods of dealing with X have changed between Etch
and Squeeze, I thought that it might be nice to do at least some of it on
the "right" version.

Then I got pig-headed when I was failing. I can be quite stubborn about not
giving up.

Using the DVDs would presumably also work.

Thanks all of you for all the help.

For Free Software:
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian etch main

For Sources
deb-src http://archive.debian.org/debian etch main

Getting contrib, non-free, and their corresponding sources is left as an
exercise for the reader.

Note that Etch has a number of known, unpatched security vulnerabilities and
receives no real support from the Debian project. Moving to Lenny should be
made a priority; any time spend working with Etch should be (at least) matched
with the same amount of time pursuing an upgrade to Lenny.

(Even Lenny is "oldstable", but at least you should get 10+ months of security
support on that and it's the first step in upgrading to Squeeze anyway.)

Installing Etch

2011-03-28 Thread Lisi
I need to install Etch (or Etch-and-a-half). I have CD 1. In order to
install a fully working Etch I need more than that.

So, how can I get: a full set of DVDs, a full set of CDs (ouch) or a working
sources list?

I have googled, but can get nothing about installing Etch, now it is already
off the cliff. I try to time limit, but Google brings up things, that it
claims were posted only 3 days ago, that talk about the change from Sarge to
Etch. :-/

I did myself ask a related question on this list a while ago, but I can't find
that either. My Google-foo has clearly gone AWOL.

So, again: how can I get one or all of: a full set of DVDs, a full set of CDs,
or a funtioning sources.list?

Etch is likely to be growing a number of security issues, since it hasn't had
support for about a year. I wonder if you are using a vulnerable version of
exim that exposes you to direct "rooting" from anyone that can connect to your
SMTP server. Your kernel (even if it is the Etch-and-half version) probably
has some locale privilege escalation attacks, which could be important
depending on who other service you provide or vulnerabilities you suffer.

Don't do anything with this system until you upgrade it to Lenny, at least.

physical, boot the vm with a live cd, dd the image from the network to the
vm's hdd. reboot. should work just fine. if the mac address is physically
defined (don't think debian does this like rh does) you might have some
network issues. also, don't bring the physical up while you're doing this or
you'll be missing messages on the spool.

the other thing that might work is to take it down to single user mode,
reconfigure your network, boot the virtual into the live cd, and copy the
contents over. then run grub-install and reboot (if you've got partitions,
make sure you mount them as appropriate on the virtual and turn on the boot
flag).

this is a mail server, so you'll probably also have to do some minor
reconfig on your network as well.

You can use debian archive.
http://archive.debian.org/

I discovered Debian Etch server recently somewhere in server room, so I'm
gonna use it.

Sources for Debian 4.0 Etch

2010-09-17 Thread Ed Curtis

Hello all,

Call me crazy but I'm still using Etch on my server. It's very stable
and does everything I need it to do so I'm sticking with it. My problem
is I can no longer get packages for it because it is so outdated the
apt-sources list is no longer current and doesn't work. Where can I get
packages for Etch? I've tried using
http://www.backports.org/debian etch main contrib non-free in my
apt-sources file but it too gives errors on updating apt. I realize I no
longer get security updates but that's fine too.

Thanks,

Ed

Of course I'm no one to tell you how to support your product but wouldn't it
be easier both from the technical standpoint and from the commercial one to
stick to the policy saying "my product will be supported on a Debian version
for as long as that version is supported by Debian itself"?

I think that's a clear and understandable policy for the user, easy to track,
since Debian development is fully publicly avaliable, and with enough
maneouvre time, since there's one support year from a version being declared
Stable and the time support is dropped for the last but one on which to plan
a migration (i.e.: you knew Etch support was to be dropped by 14/FEB/2010
since 14/FEB/2009 and you already know Lenny support will be dropped around
the last quarter of 2011)?

Cheers.

Why? ... anyway

> Thanks for your pointers in advance!

This may involve some library backports etc so it may not simple.

Few things before trying it yourself. It may be done. Check old archive for
backports.
apt line: http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/ etch-backports main
URL:
http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/dists/etch-backports/main/

If not, you can extend tricks described in "2.7.10. Porting a package to
the stable system" of Debian Reference.

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_porting_a_package_to_the_stable_system
(This document assumes squeeze is already released since it is meant
for squeeze release. We need to waitfor it. But you get the idea.)

It is essentially:
# apt-get update # in sarge
# apt-get install fakeroot devscripts build-essential
$ apt-get build-dep foo # this is from lenny
$ apt-get source foo
$ cd foo*

Some basic packaging skill is needed. So read old (lenny) version and
new (squeeze) version of maint-guide. Newest vesion on the is on the
web:
  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/index.en.html

If all these are too much, hire some one if it is for your work. If it s your
privte system, think about upgrading to lenny.

I actually wonder why the problem didn't hurt you before that. If you
had a bad host key for so long, you must have recieved some
warnings/errors about it from some ssh clients.

Ok, so apparently the problem had all sorts of things to do with the host
key being blacklisted, and therefore labeled as 'compromised'. Of course one
can't SSH in anymore in such a situation.

How to prevent it? Well, I probably should have checked with ssh-vulnkey
before doing the upgrade.

Re: Upgrading from Etch to Lenny ends in SSH problems

2010-07-08 Thread Alexander Batischev
Hi!

Well, maybe something happened to passwordless authentication - did you try
to connect using password, not RSA key? To do so, you can simply move
~/.ssh/id* somewhere and try to connect. You should be asked for a password
that time.

I'm not sure about that, but hope that helps.

Upgrading from Etch to Lenny ends in SSH problems

2010-07-07 Thread Wouter van Vliet / Interpotential
Hi All,

I've just been attempting an (more than just slightly) overdue upgrade from
Etch to Lenny on a machine I don't have physical access to. At first,
everything seemed to work fine. But after a while my connection (over ssh)
was dropped and all my box returns now is 'connection closed' when I try to
reconnect. It gives me this:

wou...@wouter-desktop:~$ ssh -vvv r...@www.#.nl
OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu4, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config

debug1: identity file /home/wouter/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
debug1: identity file /home/wouter/.ssh/id_dsa type -1
debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.1p1
Debian-5
debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5 pat OpenSSH*
debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0
debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu4
debug2: fd 3 setting O_NONBLOCK
debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent
debug3: Wrote 792 bytes for a total of 831
Connection closed by ###.###.###.###

Of course I've already activated customer support, hoping that my hosting
company is willing to physically go to the server. But I was hoping that you
might have some suggestions on what I might be able to try. Though I know my
options are limited :(

And at the same time I'm wondering what's causing it, and how I could have
prevented it. I upgraded with a simple: apt-get dist-upgrade

Thanks!
Wouter

First, copying/pasting the exact error messages would be of great help to us,
so we can then help you.

Is this a workstation or a server? Does it run an NFS client or NFS server?
Can you give us a brief history of this machine, what it's used for?

What happens when you execute "aptitude install nfs-common"? If you get an
error, please paste it here, in its entirety.

What happens when you execute "aptitude install portmap"? If you get an
error, please paste it here, in its entirety.

portmap error during upgrade from etch to lenny

2010-06-26 Thread Charles Blair
I tried to upgrade to lenny using an ethernet connection. The
process stopped when the monitor displayed "trying to update portmap 5-26"

After a few minutes, I pressed control-C and the upgrade seemed to
continue. The resulting system seems to work, but when I try to use
aptitude to get new software, it again freezes with a complaint about
portmap. Perhaps related, it says I need to install "nfs-common".

I read that portmap has something to do with RCS servers. I don't
know what that is!

Thanks for patience with questions from an unelightened user.

You want "exec startxfce4" in your ~/.xinitrc. On Lenny (possibly also
etch) you can make this global with update-alternatives --config

Live media (runs from RAM)? If so, look into Debian Live:

Etch, IIRC.

Customized instalaltion? Look into preseeding.

have e.g. gparted.

Thanks. If anyone else is having this problem....

I installed Lenny on another box with IceWeasel3 and FlashPlayer10.
This now works.

Etch and IceWeasel2 and FlashPlayer10 only partially works. It
will play canned downloads but not the live streams. IceWeasel2
is too old to work with FlashPlayer10 as Etch can't meet its
dependencies. The live streams require the later versions found
in Lenny.

Are you running a 32 bits system?

If yes, you could first try the "easy" path:

1/ Download Flash Player from Adobe site
http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash

2/ Unpack the "tar.gz" file and put the "libflashplayer.so" into your "~/
mozilla/plugins/" folder (if not present, just create it).

3/ Launch Icewasel and test.

Note: This should work on Iceweasel 3.0.x releases, I have not tested
with the older ones (2.x).

Note 2: Remember that you can also download the latest version of Firefox
from Mozilla site (usually no installation needed, just "click&run").

Greetings,

World Cup, Adobe and upgrading from Etch to Lenny

2010-06-12 Thread Bill
Hi folks,

I'm trying to steam World Cup games, which I've been doing fine
until now. But CBC our national broadcaster has switched streaming
systems and now requires that I upgrade to Flash Player 10.1 on
Etch. I don't think it's possible. Leave it to a non-free package
to screw up my system.

I'm not ready to upgrade this system yet to Lenny, so I'd like
to keep it in Etch if possible. I can't seem to install Flash
because of unmet dependencies.

I've tried forcing (-f) and using backports.org with apt but no joy.
I wonder if someone can tell me if it's possible to install Flash
Player 10 on Etch? Basically, all attempts give me an output similar
to this:

# apt-get -t backports.org install libpango1.0-0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
libpango1.0-0 is already the newest version.
You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
adobe-flashplugin:
Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.20.0) but 1.12.4-3 is to be installed
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch10+b1 is to be installed
Depends: libcairo2 (>= 1.6.0) but 1.2.4-4.1+etch1 is to be installed
Depends: libfreetype6 (>= 2.3.5) but 2.2.1-5+etch4 is to be installed
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0) but 2.8.20-7 is to be installed
Depends: libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.20.5) but 1.14.8-5+etch1 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try ‘apt-get -f install’ with no packages (or
specify a solution).

Usually apt is one of my favourite tools. But not today.
Any ideas? Is there a way to back out of this and start again?
To get Flash 10 installed on Etch?

Suggestions so far:

1. Install linux-image-2.6.-$arch.  You probably already have this installed;
on Etch it is the 2.6.18 kernel plus some backported fixes.

2. Use Etch backports. Note that using Etch backports at this point means you
might not have a clear upgrade path to Lenny without also including Lenny
backports. Also, backports isn't (yet) an official part of the stable
infrastructure.

3. Upgrade to Lenny. It is (well past) time to consider this. Security
support for Etch has run out or will run out very soon. Lenny has been
"stable" for quite some time now; in fact a freeze for Squeeze is currently in
the works. Waiting for Squeeze to become stable doesn't save you any work,
either -- a Etch -> Squeeze upgrade isn't supported; you'd have to do an
intermediate upgrade to Lenny anyway.

My suggestion:

Install linux-image-2.6-$arch-etchnhalf. During the lifetime of Etch, the
release team admitted that 2.6.18 was simply not new enough even for Debian
stable, at least for some users. Because of this, they provided "Etch-and-a-
half" kernels that are 2.6.24, but did not bump linux-image-$arch, since that
would have "forced" a kernel upgrade on users that were satisfied with 2.6.18.
Upgrades from -etchnhalf kernels (to Lenny, which has 2.6.26 in linux-
image-2.6-$arch) are supported, but the -etchnhalf kernel may need to be
manually uninstalled after the upgrade completes.

An -etchnhalf kernel is a temporary fix. It is likely that your current Etch
installs have known security vulnerabilities that will not be addressed by
Debian. You should upgrade to Lenny, ASAP.

You have three main options:

(1) Upgrade Etch to Lenny. Follow the upgrade instructions in the
release notes for Lenny.

(2) Install Lenny over the top of your Etch system, formatting the
partitions during the install. Obviously you will lose all files
on the partitions that you format when you do this, so think carefully
before you do this. At a minimum, you should have /home on a separate
partition and not format that partition, so that you don't lose user
files (except files belonging to root).

(3) Install a newer kernel from Etch backports.

There is actually a fourth option, namely installing a kernel from
Lenny on your Etch system, but I don't recommend that.

Etch is now the "oldstable" release, so I recommend options (1) or (2).

You could install a package like:

linux-image-2.6-

what this does is depends on the latest Linux kernel 2.6 and modules.

In other words if you have this installed it will always have the latest
kernel there too.

You might not want that.

How to make php5 package under Etch have https under registered PHP streams

2010-03-30 Thread Marcello Di Marino Azevedo

Hello people.

I'm very puzzled about this. For some reason php5 package under Etch
only has "zip" as Registered PHP Streams. But I noted php5 under
Lenny has "zip, php, file, data, http, ftp, compress.bzip2,
compress.zlib, https, ftps".

I'm having some problems because of that. I'm still stuck under Etch due
to some application issues.

Anyone knows why is that and how to add more registered PHP streams for
php5 under Etch?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

though I'm mainly talking to myself here, I got some updates.
I manually compiled/installed the vim versions 6.4, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2.
Running version 6.4 and 7.0 with a slightly modified vimrc from the etch
version (vimrc.dpkg-old) (leaving out some debian specific things), I
get back the bash script syntax highlighting I was used to in sarge and
etch.
However vim versions 7.1 and 7.2 seem to have changed. I get different
results with both. I don't know if this is caused by the sh.vim or the
actual vim code, but however it does not seem to be a debian specific
problem, as far as I can tell.
Guess I need to find the time to talk to the people in the vim mailing list.

Good day

Mart

Trimming it down more:
var[0]="\"foo bar\"" is valid on a line for itself.

But:
if true; then
echo "\"foo\""
var="\"foo bar\""
var[0]="\"foo bar\""
fi

the 'echo' and the 'var=' escape well, but the 'var[0]=' array member
assignment fails.

I accidentally stumbled upon a solution to this problem with Lenny
and a CS4237B sound chip on my IBM ThinkPad 600 laptop. It involves
modifying the boot scripts to add a particular "cat" command.
Don't ask me why it works, but it does. I don't know if it will work
for you in your situation, but you can give it a try.

Here's the link --> http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/tp600.htm

Good luck.

Hello again,

I've tried to look up this problem with vim syntax highlighting a bit more.
It seems to me that escaping (single|double quotes?) in any loop
statement does not work.
So I've to correct my first report, those escaping problems lead to the
result, that all following code is formatted as it was inside quotes
(not rendered as error, like the [[:digit:]] string).

So this one:
for tmp_content in ${str_attr_val}; do

RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\""
done
needs a `"' (double quote) added, to become valid for vim (while
becoming invalid in case of shell syntax).
Same thing inside an if statement:
if true; then

RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\""
fi
while inside a case statement it remains rendered valid.

And this one:
[[ $x = *\'* ]] &&
needs `' ]]' to become valid for vim.

I guess that could be fixed by modifying
/usr/share/vim/vim71/syntax/sh.vim - but I'm lost on how to.
It all worked out of the box on sarge and etch.
Most of the work I do on linux is write bash scripts with vim. This is
now messed up since the upgrade to lenny.
Any hints? Please anyone?

Best regards

Mart

after upgrade etch -> lenny, problem with vim syntax highlighting in bash scripts

2010-02-28 Thread Mart Frauenlob
Hello,

after I upgraded from etch to lenny a few days ago (new config files
have been installed for vim), I noticed that syntax highlighting for my
bash scripts is not working as before.

There are some things i've noticed, where of the first is worse to me.

1: If I put the following statement onto a single line, it does not
cause problems:
RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\""

But as soon as i put it into a for loop:

for tmp_content in ${str_attr_val}; do

RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\""
done

Everything from the 'done' word is marked with as syntax error, making
the whole file unreadable (could turn of syntax highlighting).

2:
if [[ $1 = +([[:digit:]]) ]]; then
...
fi

is good, but with:

case "$1" in
+([[:digit:]])) :
;;
esac

the last 2 `]]' are shown in red background (syntax error).

3: This one causes everything after the `'' (single quote) to be
rendered as error:
[[ $x = *\'* ]] && ...

this is my .vimrc:

set ts=4
set sw=4
let g:is_bash= 1
let sh_minlines= 500

Any ideas how I could get that fixed?
Many of my scripts are garbled now. they are more readable without
syntax highlighting.

Thanks a lot

Mart

Any change should be explained and documented in "/usr/share/doc/djbdns/

Trouble with djbdns on upgrade from etch to lenny

2010-02-17 Thread Hendrik Boom
djbdns doesn't seem to be working properly. It's not recognising queries
form one of my interfaces, but is selective about queries from another (A
but not MX). Since the interface it's refusing all requests from is my
PPP connection, maybe it's possible that it started before that interface
existed.

But in that case, how do I restart it? There's no /etc/init.d/djbdns
file any mopre, although there wa in etch. So I can no longer do
   /etc/init.d/djbdns restart

Why no /etc/init.d file? What is to be done instead? Just how *is* it
started now?

Upgrade freeradius etch to lenny.

2010-02-05 Thread Account for Debian group mail

Hello,

On one of our radius servers we upgraded from etch to lenny which means
the freeradius server software was upgraded from version 1.1.3 to 2.0.4.
This is a big upgrade for FreeRadius.

I've managed to get most of the freeradius server working properly except
the accounting part. I see in the "radius.conf" file that the accounting
is turned on and the accounting directory is still the same one used in
the version 1 software. But still the accounting is not logging the
information as it should, and I see no errors about it.

Anyone know what I have to do to get the accounting working?

Thanks,

Ken

shortly:
1. instal it.
2. creating keys. Read the readme at /usr/share/doc/openvpn, and man openvpn
3. writing server.config and client.config; here you have a chice
between tun0, client to server; and tap0, bridge between 2 gateways.

Be a bit more specific about the problem you are facing with openVPN
(installation, connection, setting up, issues at client or server
side...) so someone who uses it can have an idea on what you need to look

Greetings,

Hi,

http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/howto.html#examples

on this link you can found a two esample for configure openvpn,

one for the server end one for the client.

That configuration file is work under GNU/Linux and windows .

Re: how to force removal of etch-backport trac after upgrade to lenny

2010-01-09 Thread Guy Marcenac

I have many times been asked off list if I found a fix.

For myself, I simply disabled the test for old files in /usr/bin/pycentral.
I commented out the following code
if found_old_base and found_base2:
raise PyCentralError, \
'shared files found in old (%s) and new locations
(%s)' % (old_shared_base, shared_base2)
But I might have a problem with the next update.

I think you will find more useful and debian standard suggestion in
the "Broken Upgrade Path for trac from etch-backports to lenny" thread
in the backports-us...@lists.backports.org

Thanks for pointing that out. I meant to write "included" instead of
"supported" with respect to the kernel of the Debian installer. Sorry
for causing any confusion.

Good.

This is neither true, nor desired. Any module meeting the kernel ABI is
supported by the kernel. Debian currently also distributes non-free firmware,
which could be considered part of the driver, that can be loaded by the
"Debian installer kernel" even if they are not part of the Debian OS and do
not receive the same level of support.

The proprietary video drivers for NVidia cards are supported by the Debian

It just adds one example to the use cases, where a netinstall via wired
network does not work, because the manufacturer just specifies wireless,
but no wired connector. I guess that the number of devices of that
category are increasing, even though over the past 10 years they were
the exception.

Do you really think you are the one to decide 'what counts in this

It is customary on this list to trim messages. I don't think that I
unfairly cut too much context.

- From Debian's web site: "Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your
computer. " Debian's social contract further details that only 'free'
software as in liberty, not just beer is allowed in Debian. If there are
still any non-free drivers present in debian's kernel, those will be
removed. Some/many non-free, non-GPL or similar drivers are available
for Debian, but they are not released by Debian. They are not part of
the Debian OS. They are not supported by the "Debian installer kernel".
They have to be installed *seperately*.

Your statement was about a driver being part of Debian. I thought it was
obvious to the readers of this very list, that non-free drivers might
work with debian machines, but are _not_ part of the Debian OS.
