Lenny came next and it is EOL also. Squeeze is current, and Wheezy will be released within 6 months or so. Try the Squeeze and Wheezy installers. 2.6.24 is way too old for Ivy Bridge. A little Googling will tell you that various fixes for Ivy Bridge were still being submitted in Linux 3.5, around June/July 2012 IIRC. Apparently there are significant differences between Sandy and Ivy Bridge. I'm not an Intel hardware engineer so I can't say for sure. Given that Foxconn is an Intel licensee I would think you could contact Intel engineers directly and ask this question. What I can say for sure is that you shouldn't be working with EOL operating systems and kernels on the newest chipset platforms. Etch Lenny Squeeze upgrades and sysv-rc
Hi, I don't know if it is because several of my servers started out as Etch then got upgraded to Lenny end then to Squeeze, or if it is something in the Lenny to Squeeze upgrade but During most of my upgrades the sysv-rc upgrade failed at first because of the old libdevmapper1.02 package. The solution was simple as there was already an installed libdevmapper1.02.1 version installed at that time which did not have the problem. So just # aptitude purge libdevmapper1.02 # dpkg-reconfigure sysv-rc and the problem is gone. However, I was unable to find anything about this in the Squeeze upgrade notes. Did I miss something? Or is it because they started out as Etch? I am assuming so but the funny thing is that at the start of the upgrade I did an # apt-get autoremove And that did not remove the old libdevmapper1.02 which had status c at the time of the sysv-rc upgrade. # aptitude search libdevmapper v libdevmapper - p libdevmapper-dev - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper header files c libdevmapper1.02 - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper userspace library i A libdevmapper1.02.1 - The Linux Kernel Device Mapper userspace library Nor did # aptitude purge "~c" delete that package when I ran that at the beginning of my upgrade run. So probably the libdevmapper1.02.1 was installed during the upgrade process, which is kinda funny as a default Lenny installation already has the 1.02.1 version. For whoever still needs to upgrade their Lenny system to Squeeze, now you know what it going on. I'm finished as of last week. :-) Bonno Bloksma -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Problem installing Etch using local mirror
Hi, I'm trying to install Debian Etch from floppy and local mirror. It fails with message: "The specified Debian archive mirror is either not available, or does not have a valid Release file on it. Please try a different mirror." Before I get bashed for this question, I'd like to explain that I want to install Debian on a very old laptop (Celeron 300MHz, 64MB RAM), which doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, doesn't boot from network, doesn't boot from USB and I can't remove its HDD. That's why I decided to use Etch, as it still had floppy install images. Before I tried installing it on a real hardware, I decided to test everything on a virtual machine. First I tried a regular mirror over http - failed (I understand that, etch is archived). Then I tried archive.debian.org - failed. Then I created a local mirror on my bigger Debian machine using apt-mirror. The installation failed again with the same message. During several failed attempts, I created symbolic links "stable" and "oldstable" to "etch". Then I spied a little using wireshark. The installation requests the release file "/debian/dists/oldstable/Release" - which is returned with HTTP OK. Then it requests "/debian/dists/etch/Release", which also finishes with a successful file transfer. Still the same error. No other files are requested from the mirror. I assume it's not a network or file-naming problem. What else can be wrong? Corrupted mirror? Invalid signatures? The beggining of the release file is as follows: "Origin: Debian Label: Debian Suite: oldstable Version: 4.0r9 Codename: etch Date: Sat, 22 May 2010 14:22:09 UTC Architectures: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc Components: main contrib non-free Description: Debian 4.0r9 Released 22nd May 2010 MD5Sum: 88e31747739f3ea9445fe543b21061b5 10910068 Contents-powerpc.g" I mirrored main contrib and non-free, only i386. But this is for an assessment question in a course I am doing, not for a machine in use. Installing Etch
I need to install Etch (or Etch-and-a-half). I have CD 1. In order to install a fully working Etch I need more than that. So, how can I get: a full set of DVDs, a full set of CDs (ouch) or a working sources list? I have googled, but can get nothing about installing Etch, now it is already off the cliff. I try to time limit, but Google brings up things, that it claims were posted only 3 days ago, that talk about the change from Sarge to Etch. :-/ I did myself ask a related question on this list a while ago, but I can't find that either. Etch is likely to be growing a number of security issues, since it hasn't had support for about a year. I wonder if you are using a vulnerable version of exim that exposes you to direct "rooting" from anyone that can connect to your SMTP server. Your kernel (even if it is the Etch-and-half version) probably has some locale privilege escalation attacks, which could be important depending on who other service you provide or vulnerabilities you suffer. Don't do anything with this system until you upgrade it to Lenny, at least. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Of course I'm no one to tell you how to support your product but wouldn't it be easier both from the technical standpoint and from the commercial one to stick to the policy saying "my product will be supported on a Debian version for as long as that version is supported by Debian itself"? I think that's a clear and understandable policy for the user, easy to track, since Debian development is fully publicly avaliable, and with enough maneouvre time, since there's one support year from a version being declared Stable and the time support is dropped for the last but one on which to plan a migration (i.e.: you knew Etch support was to be dropped by 14/FEB/2010 since 14/FEB/2009 and you already know Lenny support will be dropped around the last quarter of 2011)? Re: Upgrading from Etch to Lenny ends in SSH problems
Hi! Well, maybe something happened to passwordless authentication - did you try to connect using password, not RSA key? To do so, you can simply move ~/.ssh/id* somewhere and try to connect. You should be asked for a password that time. I'm not sure about that, but hope that helps. -- Regards, Alexander Batischev 1024D/69093C81 F870 A381 B5F5 D2A1 1B35 4D63 A1A7 1C77 6909 3C81 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

World Cup, Adobe and upgrading from Etch to Lenny
Hi folks, I'm trying to steam World Cup games, which I've been doing fine until now. But CBC our national broadcaster has switched streaming systems and now requires that I upgrade to Flash Player 10.1 on Etch. I don't think it's possible. Leave it to a non-free package to screw up my system. I'm not ready to upgrade this system yet to Lenny, so I'd like to keep it in Etch if possible. I can't seem to install Flash because of unmet dependencies. I've tried forcing (-f) and using backports.org with apt but no joy. I wonder if someone can tell me if it's possible to install Flash Player 10 on Etch? Basically, all attempts give me an output similar to this: # apt-get -t backports.org install libpango1.0-0 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done libpango1.0-0 is already the newest version. You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies. adobe-flashplugin: Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.20.0) but 1.12.4-3 is to be installed Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch10+b1 is to be installed Depends: libcairo2 (>= 1.6.0) but 1.2.4-4.1+etch1 is to be installed Depends: libfreetype6 (>= 2.3.5) but 2.2.1-5+etch4 is to be installed Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0) but 2.8.20-7 is to be installed Depends: libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.20.5) but 1.14.8-5+etch1 is to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try ‘apt-get -f install’ with no packages (or specify a solution). Usually apt is one of my favourite tools. But not today. Any ideas? Is there a way to back out of this and start again? Suggestions so far: 1. Install linux-image-2.6.-$arch. You probably already have this installed; on Etch it is the 2.6.18 kernel plus some backported fixes. 2. Use Etch backports. Note that using Etch backports at this point means you might not have a clear upgrade path to Lenny without also including Lenny backports. Also, backports isn't (yet) an official part of the stable infrastructure. 3. Upgrade to Lenny. It is (well past) time to consider this. Security support for Etch has run out or will run out very soon. Lenny has been "stable" for quite some time now; in fact a freeze for Squeeze is currently in the works. Waiting for Squeeze to become stable doesn't save you any work, either -- a Etch -> Squeeze upgrade isn't supported; you'd have to do an intermediate upgrade to Lenny anyway. My suggestion: Install linux-image-2.6-$arch-etchnhalf. During the lifetime of Etch, the release team admitted that 2.6.18 was simply not new enough even for Debian stable, at least for some users. Because of this, they provided "Etch-and-a- half" kernels that are 2.6.24, but did not bump linux-image-$arch, since that would have "forced" a kernel upgrade on users that were satisfied with 2.6.18. Upgrades from -etchnhalf kernels (to Lenny, which has 2.6.26 in linux- image-2.6-$arch) are supported, but the -etchnhalf kernel may need to be manually uninstalled after the upgrade completes. An -etchnhalf kernel is a temporary fix. It is likely that your current Etch installs have known security vulnerabilities that will not be addressed by Debian. You should upgrade to Lenny, ASAP. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

You have three main options: (1) Upgrade Etch to Lenny. Follow the upgrade instructions in the release notes for Lenny. (2) Install Lenny over the top of your Etch system, formatting the partitions during the install. Obviously you will lose all files on the partitions that you format when you do this, so think carefully before you do this. At a minimum, you should have /home on a separate partition and not format that partition, so that you don't lose user files (except files belonging to root). (3) Install a newer kernel from Etch backports. There is actually a fourth option, namely installing a kernel from Lenny on your Etch system, but I don't recommend that. Etch is now the "oldstable" release, so I recommend options (1) or (2). -- .''`. I'm still stuck under Etch due to some application issues. Anyone knows why is that and how to add more registered PHP streams for php5 under Etch? Hello, though I'm mainly talking to myself here, I got some updates. I manually compiled/installed the vim versions 6.4, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2. Running version 6.4 and 7.0 with a slightly modified vimrc from the etch version (vimrc.dpkg-old) (leaving out some debian specific things), I get back the bash script syntax highlighting I was used to in sarge and etch. However vim versions 7.1 and 7.2 seem to have changed. I get different results with both. I don't know if this is caused by the sh.vim or the actual vim code, but however it does not seem to be a debian specific problem, as far as I can tell. Guess I need to find the time to talk to the people in the vim mailing list. Good day Mart -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? It seems to me that escaping (single|double quotes?) in any loop statement does not work. So I've to correct my first report, those escaping problems lead to the result, that all following code is formatted as it was inside quotes (not rendered as error, like the [[:digit:]] string). So this one: for tmp_content in ${str_attr_val}; do RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\"" done needs a `"' (double quote) added, to become valid for vim (while becoming invalid in case of shell syntax). Same thing inside an if statement: if true; then RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\"" fi while inside a case statement it remains rendered valid. And this one: [[ $x = *\'* ]] && needs `' ]]' to become valid for vim. I guess that could be fixed by modifying /usr/share/vim/vim71/syntax/sh.vim - but I'm lost on how to. It all worked out of the box on sarge and etch. Most of the work I do on linux is write bash scripts with vim. This is now messed up since the upgrade to lenny. Any hints? Please anyone? after upgrade etch -> lenny, problem with vim syntax highlighting in bash scripts
Hello, after I upgraded from etch to lenny a few days ago (new config files have been installed for vim), I noticed that syntax highlighting for my bash scripts is not working as before. There are some things i've noticed, where of the first is worse to me. 1: If I put the following statement onto a single line, it does not cause problems: RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\"" But as soon as i put it into a for loop: for tmp_content in ${str_attr_val}; do RESULT_ARR[IDX++]="[$((m_count++))]=\"${str_attr_name}[$((opt_idx++))]=\\\"${tmp_content}\\\"\"" done Everything from the 'done' word is marked with as syntax error, making the whole file unreadable (could turn of syntax highlighting). 2: if [[ $1 = +([[:digit:]]) ]]; then ... fi is good, but with: case "$1" in +([[:digit:]])) : ;; esac the last 2 `]]' are shown in red background (syntax error). 3: This one causes everything after the `'' (single quote) to be rendered as error: [[ $x = *\'* ]] && ... this is my .vimrc: set ts=4 set sw=4 let g:is_bash= 1 let sh_minlines= 500 Any ideas how I could get that fixed? djbdns doesn't seem to be working properly. It's not recognising queries form one of my interfaces, but is selective about queries from another (A but not MX). Upgrade freeradius etch to lenny.
Hello, On one of our radius servers we upgraded from etch to lenny which means the freeradius server software was upgraded from version 1.1.3 to 2.0.4. This is a big upgrade for FreeRadius. I've managed to get most of the freeradius server working properly except the accounting part. I see in the "radius.conf" file that the accounting is turned on and the accounting directory is still the same one used in the version 1 software. But still the accounting is not logging the information as it should, and I see no errors about it. Anyone know what I have to do to get the accounting working? If there are still any non-free drivers present in debian's kernel, those will be removed. Some/many non-free, non-GPL or similar drivers are available for Debian, but they are not released by Debian. They are not part of the Debian OS. They are not supported by the "Debian installer kernel". They have to be installed *seperately*. > It seems pretty darn > clear. Your statement was about a driver being part of Debian. I thought it was obvious to the readers of this very list, that non-free drivers might work with debian machines, but are _not_ part of the Debian OS.
