Bug#357207: xkb-data: does not work at all after upgrade

2006-03-16 Thread Andreas Kroschel
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After upgrade to 0.8-1, keyboard layouts in xkb-data do not work at all.
It doesn't make any difference whether they are configured in xorg.conf
or in a setxkbmap command, neither does it matter whether I set a
symlink from /usr/share/X11/xkb to /etc/X11/xkb, as described in the
README file, or if I start the X server with the option “-xkbdir
/usr/share/X11/xkb” and an equivalent XKBPATH environmant variable.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get setxkbmap to say more than “Error loading
new keyboard description”.

Dear Friends!

My computer is an Asus notebook V6800V with a 15' LCD SXGA+
monitor, a Synaptics V5.9 PS/2 Port touchpad, a graphics card
ATI Mobility Radeon X600.

During basic installation I was asked for
the resolution - 1280x1024,
the graphics card - radeon,
the mouse - I used the hardware test.

In xf86cfg I could move the cursor, but not open anything, so no
remedy was possible.

The log file is added.

If you cannot help me I have to throw away Debian.

Hi, this report (actually these two reports, 355710 being a duplicate of

consider that X failing to start is a bug, but it's actually normal as
the X driver you seem to use (radeon) does not support your video card
in Sarge.

If you can justify why this bug would be valid, please reopen only one
of the reports, ideally #355709.

The us_intl layout was not present in 0.6-2, it was replaced by

In 0.8-1, a compatibility rule had been added, but you should really
migrate to the settings above. Anyway there is another problem,
files have been moved to /usr/share/X11/xkb and X server has not been
updated yet, see /usr/share/doc/xkb-data/README.Debian.

That's too bad, because there are people out there that can't move to
anything newer than 6.8.2, at least for xserver-xorg. Me beeing one of
them. However I'd really like to use xkb-data because it has support for
all those fance multimedia-keys I regurlarly use on my keyboard. Of
course I can just patch xkb from xlibs-data, but I may have to do this
after every xlibs-data update...

OK, but if this is a fault of xorg 6.9, xkb-data should depend from
 xserver-xorg =7.0.x, shouldn't it?

No, because one may use xkb-data without an X server, for instance I
believe that the console keyboard driver for the Hurd uses those
XKB files. This dependency would then be harmful to them.
Xkb-data may conflict with xorg 6.9, but xkb-data is in experimental
and will be available in unstable along with xorg 7.0, thus I believe
that this conflict is not needed. Of course I am not happy with
the current situation, breaking XKB is no fun for users.
If there is a note in /usr/share/doc/xkb-data/README.Debian about
xorg 6.9, do you believe that this is enough to close this bug report?

cxkb does the same thing for the Linux console.

Maybe you could add a postinst script that creates the symlinks. IIRC
the old README.Debian said that one should use the -xkbdir Option to
X11 to specify the xkb-data directory. This worked without a problem
here, so I wonder if you just need to create 2 symlinks in
/usr/share/X11/xkb-data for compiled and xkbcomp in a postinst script
if the xserver-xorg Version is 7.0 (or some such).

Then the README.Debian should point out both possibilities, i.e. using
-xkbdir and moving /etc/X11/xkb out of the way to make place for a
symlink.

Just my 2¢ however.

Wonderful to hear on both counts! I'd put it in branches/modular/data,
which is alongside xkb-data-legacy. The xkb-data-legacy is still named
xkb-data after upstream's convention, but I'll rename it to prevent
confusion.

THis is an important change, XKB files have been moved into
/usr/share/X11/xkb. Until all applications are fixed, the easiest
way to have a working environment is to set a symlink /etc/X11/xkb -
 /usr/share/X11/xkb.

Cool, thanks for doing this!
