[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu login screen never appears when using the Nvidia driver (and setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it)
Wayland is not fully functional or compatible with Ubuntu 18.10 yet. So why use wayland in a full new distribution, and cause problems? It wasted 8 hours of my time to find the solution. Just because of 1 line in a gdm3 conf file. 1 wrong line in a config line, and Ubuntu fails. Ubuntu needs essential conf and system protection, so that 1 little change cannot derail the entire OS, or deleting or installing cannot remove essential files necessary to run the OS. After this many years Ubuntu is still incredibly easy to break. [Bug 1079953] Re: Main Menu Editor alacarte is Completely Broken in xubuntu 12.10
when ubuntu went to "Unity" (actually should be called "Chaos and Confusion"), and then lied about how happy users are about it, they destroyed everthing else easy. Such as the Main Menu. It can no longer be edited to users satisfaction. True it took hours to make my own appnames, to sort them to my own directories, just as I wanted; (because they refused to simplify them and just make them menu text files, that could easily be moved, copied, deleted, backed up, and especially renamed and re-iconed. But atleast I could personalize the menu and thereby streamline my activities.) Now, I am chained to the whims of the programmers, Linux masters, and just as I feared, IT'S REALLY JUST ALL ABOUT MONEY AND POWER, NO open NO freedom! FIX the MENU, I know YOU can, IF you wanted to! [Bug 12040] Re: GNOME "Main Menu" panel applet slow to open on first click (NOT compiz related)
Interestingly, in natty-alpha3 & newer, the gnome-panel Main Menu comes up instantly, scrolling works well, only editing remains tedious. Of course natty uses the unity-panel-desktop-and so on. & may not be fully integrated with natty? So gnome-panel must be added to auto-start, & then add the menus and applets of ones choice. [Bug 727823] Re: Enable Gnome-Control-Center in Unity, and add "System Settings" link to the session indicator menu
Frankly, I have no idea how unity works, or how it should work, especially where the settings are to adjust or enhance unity. Perhaps unity was introduced before its time or maybe I am just getting too old to keep up with the Linux masters? - [By the way, Is Mark Shuttleworth left handed?] - Unity has great possibilities, if windows decoration & functionality remains a user's choice. So far, windows loose their headers far too easily when unity fails. - Naked windows are like chickens without feathers. - Unity must become 'un-crash-able'. A right click menu like gnome-panel, with many options, would help. Still, I prefer a panel on the bottom of the desktop, it is more comfortable, & easier for me to work with. So, I simply auto-start gnome-panel, which appears on the bottom, & gives me many choices, including The familiar Main Menu. Yes, this main menu needs some tweaking, however, I discovered, that under natty there is no delay in using the menu, & scrolling works as well, under maverick these functions where a problem, natty somehow fixed it. Sure, if unity had right-click functions, & a Menu that is easily configured & customized, would make unity far better than gnome-desktop & gnome-panel. Just an open source thought. [Bug 12040] Re: GNOME "Main Menu" panel applet slow to open on first click (NOT compiz related)
Apparently I made somebody angry, because they subtracted from karma, which I do not believe in, in the first place. - Open source should also allow for open mind. I believe in fast & stable apps & intelligent, logical programs. The Main Menu in Ubuntu has way to many flaws, & that for many years now. It has not kept up with modern improvements, as the rest of Ubuntu. - Examples: 1.) It takes longer to open, then log-out, log-in, or warm boot back to Maverick. - Main Menu should auto-start, & be ready to use as soon as the desktop is fully on the monitor! 2.) "Edit Menus" function is unbelievably slow, awkward, agonizing & archaic, only one item at a time can be moved, some items refuse to move all together; icons are missing at times, & can take many minutes to manually find, since someone has removed the icon viewer which was a wonderful app. 3.) The more one tries to edit the Main Main, the more does the program fight one, until it totally refuses to work correctly. 4.) One finally gives up, & ends up with sky high menus, which when they get too high must be scrolled, except, that the items on the bottom of the scroll cannot be selected, unless one presses & holds the key & uses the mouse at the same time. Main Menu does not just have bugs, it really needs to be replaced to become an easy, modern app, that will improve the Ubuntu experience, a really open & friendly menu that will snap to the needs of the modern user. [sorry, but no attachment or patch can truly fix the archaic Main Menu, I stand by my comment of 2011-02-13.] I have confidence, that the Ubuntu Masters can revolutionize a menu better then any other OS. I have been reading 100s of e-mails and shaking my head. This "left, right buttons" issue is turning into a war over trifles. The Ubuntu Developers have a right to develop Ubuntu anyway they like (within reason). YOU (plural) develop new themes and offer them to the users. The users can make choices with their open-licensed *individual copy* of the OS: They can accept or reject any theme, any option, any choice on their own private PCs. There is no need to argue over individual tastes. - I like blue, you like red, so, I make mine blue, and you make yours red. - Ubuntu gives individuals the greatest amount of choice of most OSs. - I can compile my own kernel, I can create and alter themes, boot-up, wallpaper, screen-savers, etc., I can choose any of tens of thousands of programs. There are more options than most users know what to do with. - Thank YOU for YOUR innovations and imaginations and YOUR Linux expertise! Keep up the good work, and continue to offer us your best and newest art and innovation. It is YOUR right, after all, it is YOUR baby (as long as it does not turn evil and hurts people - leave that to Microsoft). [Bug 482948] Re: OS powers down without mouse or keyboard input and has to be rebooted
Latest on gnome-power-manager: I thought, that the bug was fixed, but realized, that another power- manager, guidance-power-manager along with xscreensaver 5.10 were actually active. I adjusted this power manager, within xscreensaver settings to 1440 minutes each. I deleted gnome power manager, which is still as useless as it was ever since Karmic. I auto-start xscreensaver, and I can now safely watch & download TV & movies, without the PC causing a video signal loss, due to gnome- power-manager. Since no one is really willing to fix this horrific bug, I recommend to just shelve the gnome-power-manager, and install KDE's guidance-power-manager in consort with xscreensaver 5.10. Update on the power-management / ACPI problem: CTR Monitor I use, is DELL 15 inch E771a. ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mobo, Intel (82)G35 chipset, integrated X3500 Graphics Media Accelerator, Intel Core Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.2GHz, 2 GB DDR2 800MHz Memory, Intel ALC883 HD audio. AMI 8MB BIOS - Power management works great under Win XP & Vista. Under Karmic, when I push the sleep button (suspend) on my Logitech Media Keyboard, the OSD notifier tells me: "Action disallowed" "Suspend support has been disabled". This confirms my settings, that I do not want the PC to go to sleep, nor the monitor to go to sleep. Yet, Karmic still puts the Monitor, and then the PC to sleep, within 10 minutes, with regularity. Eventually video signal is cut, audio signal is gone, keyboard & mouse fail to awaken the PC or the monitor, suspend button fails. Evidently power-management or what ever program regulates ACPI fails to respond to the settings, & powers down. I do not know how to get the attention of the developers, to fix this Critical error! Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager CRITICAL ERROR! I only assume it has something to do with the power-manager, but I really do not know. When watching a movie or when not using input devices Karmic powers down. First, the screen goes black, and most of the time it awakens when keyboard or the mouse is pressed or moved. Goes black again, every 10 minutes, for 3 or 4 times. Then usually the 4th or 5th time of going black, video signal is lost, sound stops, keyboard, mouse, suspend button are useless. The PC has to be rebooted to function again. Its like a silent crash, with no warnings, no crash report. Power settings are on "Never" put computer to sleep, and "Never" put display to sleep. Screensaver is not activated, setting is on maximum 2 hour setting. The PC and the Monitor should stay powered on indefinitely. But Karmic not only powers it down regardless but fails to re-power. THIS IS A VERY CRITICAL AND SERIOUS FAILURE!! This is without a doubt one of the most frustrating bugs in any reputable OS. I was about to recommend Karmic to some clients. [Bug 428477] Re: Display configuration: a new version of displayconfig-gtk is necessary
Today's (Wed. Oct. 14, 2009, ~lunch time) upgrade / update for Karmic beta (re)installed an applet under Accessories called: "Resolution Switcher." It can reside on the panel just like the "Display" applet. A left click opens resolution options & a "Configure Display Settings." That is a move into the right direction (I believe previous Ubuntus had similar applets.). To fully benefit from this option, it would be nice to tie this applet into the main resolution & refresh engine, to be able to manually choose from higher resolutions & refresh rates beyond the limitations set by the video drivers. A fail-safe is already in place, in case the chosen refresh frequency or resolution is beyond the true capabilities of the Monitor & Graphics card. If the hardware is unable to handle the settings it will reset in 20 seconds via the "Resolution Switcher," & 30 seconds via the "Display" applet. To somewhat limit the absolute maximums, "inf" like scripts from the OEMs could be plugged into these applets or the video engine (which I know are already in existence for most major brands). Ubuntu .conf scripts will do. To have automatic probing of acceptable settings is great but to be able to tweak these for maximum performance for gamers & others requiring higher settings is superb. You're probably saying: "You are preaching to the quire." - I wish I had the skills & ability to help with this. Alas, I am no mathematician or computer science master. [Bug 428477] Re: Display configuration: a new version of displayconfig-gtk is necessary
I whole heartedly concur with this group. One of the things that kept me from Ubuntu for years, was the lack of good graphics / video capability. Graphics / video has got to be one of the three most important issues in the use of most computers. The visual sense is more needed and relied on then any other. One of my biggest struggles with Jaunty and now Karmic is resolutions, refresh rates and video speed. Why even bother to upgrade to Karmic if video / graphics are not improved. I have lost anything over 1024x768 dpi and 75 Hz refresh rate. I can actually see my monitor flickering at 75 Hz, which not only hurts my eyes but also makes me tired, causes me to slow down in my work on PCs. Most other OSs get me to 1600x1...@60 1024x...@85! I have yet to see a bug report or answer that would resolve this extremely important issue. Literally 1000s of Ubuntu Jaunty and Karmic users are affected.
