Why? It's saying that you can't translate shared-mime-info there because
upstream is not using launchpad, which is true.

The issue is not so black and white as that (per my understanding).
There are sync issues that block the translations coming upstream. It is
up to translators to get translations upstream. It would be fantastic if
Launchpad had an easy way for GNOME to pickup translations when we want.

PS. I am not on the Launchpad translation team, but I do hack on
Launchpad Answers. Ubuntu *does* want it's translations going back to
GNOME, our favorite desktop.

Thats nonsense. If Ubuntu are not feeding their translations back
upstream, they are effectively forking the project, for translation
purposes. Saying "if everybody came to use our closed-source
collaboration tool the world would be a better place" is not a valid
excuse.

Translation Project Robot should automatically send PO files to
maintainers after the syntax check (for example, the Italian translation
for shared-mime-info I sent -using my other address- this morning was
accepted by Robot, and should be bounced to you).

The shared-mime-info product itself is not translatable[1] 'cause you
are not using launchpad to manage it.

The Ubuntu package (maybe with patched/added/changed strings), instead,
is translatable[2], but only for Ubuntu releases, not for upstream. You
can browse and download them at [3], but manually.

PS yes, sometimes launchpad it's a mess. And note that often anyone can
translate: this is good, but sometimes very bad (imagine anyone could
add patches... brrr..)

PPS you could also set up a custom Web2.0-style translation system. See
aNobii[4] :-)

And why aren't those translations getting back upstream, where they

There is also Launchpad.net from Canonical/Ubuntu to manage
translations, see https://translations.launchpad.net/+about and
https://help.launchpad.net/FeatureHighlights/SoftwareTranslation

Just a note: the FAQ[1] says Launchpad translations are under BSD
licence, the TermOfUse page says that submitted translations are under
the same licence as the software.

Chris Neumair and Christophe Fergeau are the official maintainers. I'm a
bug and release monkey :)

I have no idea how to interact with TP, and people have been sending
updated translations directly to me, to the list, or committing
themselves if they have access.

Bastien (you are maintainer, aren't you?), please note that the latest
translation template officially sent to Transation Project was the
0.17!! See [1]

IMHO is better send new template to TP, wait for updated translations,
relase 0.22 with those and make GNOME depend on it (as recommended
version, of course)

PS maybe fd.o should switch to a custom and automated translation
framework: fd.o stuff's translations (HAL, gst*, shared-mime-info...)
are always outdated.

I guess it depends a bit on what we want to achieve with this list of
external dependencies. I understand the "minimum version" column as a
checklist for
"can I build 2.19 on this machine ?" - for that, any version of shared-mime-info
will do.

Not a killer feature, but support for more formats is always nice. Look
at the number of changes I made to add rarely used formats in
shared-mime-info for Totem to use.

I second using the latest version as the recommended version, although
I'm not sure who wouldn't update to the latest version when updating all
the other packages.

I think we probably just want to raise the recommended version to be the latest.
The minimum version does not really make that much sense for a pure

shared-mime-info minimum version update

2007-06-11 Thread Lucas Rocha
Hi,

I'd like to propose to raise the minimum version of shared-mime-info
from 0.19 to 0.21 for GNOME 2.20. Basically, this would solve bug
#408591. I guess other modules would benefit from this update as well.

Cheers!
