[Desktop-packages] [Bug 602809] Re: add Mouse Click Debounce Feature?
This isn't just of value to people who happen to have a mouse that's a bit iffy, who get a bad impression of Ubuntu because the same mouse works fine on Windows (see bug #1). It's possibly also of benefit to those who have difficulty with muscle control, especially the elderly. Maybe this bug can get a raised profile if we play the accessibility card? But most likely what it takes is some capable volunteer to write the code to fix it and get a patch accepted. Few of the bugs I've marked as "me too" ever get fixed by Canonical. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602809 Title: add Mouse Click Debounce Feature? [Desktop-packages] [Bug 990541] Re: Libreoffice Writer freezes when Impress add picture dialog is open
This bug is very easy to reproduce. Here's how to do it on LibreOffice 5.1.6.2: Start LibreOffice Writer. Type a few characters to ensure it's responsive. File->New->Presentation (this starts Impress) In that new window Insert->Image... (that gives you a File selection dialog) Don't finish selecting a file, switch back to the Writer window. Try to type some characters. Fail. In other words, the LO file selection dialog is modal and blocks everything else in LibreOffice. To anyone used to using other office suites, where the word processor, spreadsheet and presentation app are all independent tasks, this behaviour is extremely unexpected, puzzling, irritating and broken. And has been broken for at least 7 years. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/990541 Title: Libreoffice Writer freezes when Impress add picture dialog is open Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Libreoffice Writer freezes when Impress add picture dialog is open. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1365393] Re: Cropping tool does not function
I've no idea what 'STRG' means. I've used Simple Scan for years. It's really handy. Really REALLY handy. My thanks to its author. Indeed it's open on my desktop at the moment, I was interspersing some scans with answering mail, and one of my mails was this bug update notification. However, I've long meant to look at the source, because it took me longer than it should have for me to figure out how to use it, and the UI definitely needs a rework (IMHO). My normal workflow: * Item in scanner, press ctrl+1, scan completes on scanner, data is still xferring. * Take item out of scanner, position the next one ready. * When data has arrived, click on Crop (why no shortcut??), slide rectangle to top left (why can't I set prefs so that it always starts at top left?), pull bottom right to fit image. * Hit Enter (I'm unsure whether I need to do this, but it's become a mantra that works for me). * Press ctrl+1 as above, repeat all above except don't need to hit Enter again. Each scan will have the same crop. * Finally, press ctrl+S and get Save dialog. Save dialog ALWAYS assumes pdf (grrr, why can't I set prefs?) although usually I want to override it and save as multiple jpg, which works provided I select jpg as file type. * Press ctrl+N to completely reset, losing the crop setting, which often I would prefer to keep. Maybe there's a less severe reset which would retain the crop setting, but I don't know of it. So that's my normal workflow, and I don't feel that I fully understand what's inside the black box, concerning cropping and photo vs text. Unlike some much more complex programs (Gimp, Office, ...) where I really feel in charge, with Simple Scan I've arrived at a method of doing things by rote which gets the job done, but which I'm fearful of deviating from. I feel that's a symptom of a badly designed UI. But since I've never invested the time to examine the source, I don't feel I'm in any position to complain about it. I'm writing the above in the hope that it helps someone else to use the program reliably and get the job done, rather than (as almost happened with me), throwing in the towel and using Gimp even for very mundane scans. I'm ever so grateful Simple Scan exists. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to simple-scan in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1365393 Title: Cropping tool does not function Status in simple-scan package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Cropping tool allows me to select area of scanend photo on page. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1132063] Re: Mouse settings missing from Mouse & Touchpad dialog
Over 18 months ago (see #35) this was assigned to Iain Lane. Why has activity stalled? 'lxinput' and/or 'xset' may be workarounds, no doubt of interest to those few who visit this report. But what about the other 99% of users who suffer but have no idea how to search Launchpad and find workarounds? The real benefit of a workaround is that it shows that the job is technically possible and now needs integrating into the product that's delivered to the masses. Being able to adjust mouse sensitivity is especially important for the elderly and others who suffer from difficulties with motor control. I teach retired beginners and this kind of accessibility issue can make the difference between a happy Linux user and a switch to Windows. See bug #1. Hello Michael, thank you, perhaps I should be pleased that someone has responded to my report. It goes like this: * a report is filed. * nothing is done about it, zip, nada, rien, not even a response. * FOUR AND A HALF YEARS OF SILENCE * "Hi, we're looking at your detailed report but we haven't made the slightest attempt to reproduce it" * 60 days pass * bug is closed, devs congratulate themselves on closing many bugs Is this really the best we can do to get the community enthused and helping one another? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/761781 Title: Gedit takes many minutes to start if there are many files in directory Status in gedit package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: gedit Gedit takes forever (many minutes) to start up if there are a lot of files in the same directory. It also takes a similar time to exit. I had about 70,000 small text files (each around 1K) in a directory. Double clicking on one in Nautilus resulted in many minutes before GEdit appeared. In contrast, other editors work instantly, e.g. nano, vim. Even Open Office opens any of these files quickly! Perhaps http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=922587=2 post #18 has a clue to why there is this horrendous delay. "I think I know why it takes so long to load: How many files/folders does the directory you are trying to load have? gedit remembers the last directory, and it could be the fact that your last used directory has a lot of files/folders to be read." Madbiologist: you write "This bug is about the default resize grab handle at window borders being too small". Can I gently suggest you read the title of this problem report? And also read the substance of post #1. It's about window borders. I'm sorry, but if you think the solution to a request for set-ability of window borders is to provide a feature in one corner of the window, I feel you've misunderstood. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
Seth, when you say 'Fix Released', does this mean that in System Settings there is now a means (using GUI tools only) for the user to modify the border width? Anything less than that is, to my mind, not a 'fix'. And I suspect many others with hand/eye coordination problems would agree it's not a fix. Ubuntu has traditionally aimed at inclusiveness, it should be striving to meet the needs of many, not just young people who are fortunate to have full health. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult
I don't even accept that it's adequately fixed in Unity (unless there's been significant progress since 14.04, for I only use LTS releases). I teach elderly users with little or no experience of computers. Naturally many don't have good hand/eye coordination, so they need to be able to adjust settings easily to make the system fit their needs. One would expect this to be found under Settings / Universal Access, but there is nothing there that addresses this issue. If you look at Windows XP (I'm not familiar enough with later versions to speak from memory) you can go into the control panel and set window borders to whatever width you want. After adjustment the result may not be as pretty, but when you're over 70 and unlikely to have a career in Hollywood, 'pretty' isn't high on your wish list, accessibility IS. Please consider addressing this. It would be a boon if you can get it done before 16.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to light-themes in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160311 Title: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult Status in Ayatana Design: Fix Released Status in emerald: New Status in One Hundred Papercuts: Fix Released Status in metacity: In Progress Status in ubuntu-mate: Opinion Status in Release Notes for Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in Unity: Fix Released Status in unity-2d: Invalid Status in light-themes package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in unity package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This bug is fixed in unity-3d since ubuntu 11.04. For Precise (12.04) this is again broken for unity-2d (as of 17.7.2012 unity-2d 5.12.0-0ubuntu1.1). Note that if the window has a scrollbar, you can grab that to resize the window. If not, you are stuck with the 1px border. Workaround: NONE KNOWN (see comment 320)? * *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04: https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection- dx-n-resizing-windows Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications; doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs. 2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize on all sides. * Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa : https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk * Workaround for Compiz/Unity: Alt+Middlemousebutton resizes a window most comfortably. Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity- theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as desired: distance name=left_width value=3/ distance name=right_width value=3/ distance name=bottom_height value=3/ Binary package hint: metacity - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity team). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1346868] Re: Canon MX310 printer hangs when printing LibreOffice Writer doc
I have the MX310 printer on loan again for a short time. I suspected that the behaviour, with the printer hanging up and requiring the power plug to be pulled to recover, while Ubuntu was fine, is perhaps due to a firmware error. After all, no matter what one throws at the printer, it shouldn't lock up, right? But I've downloaded the firmware update program (Windows and Mac only, grrr) using XP and found that the firmware is already at 1.040, Canon's latest version. A short letter prints to completion as far as the computer is concerned and is removed from the print queue. The printer prints the full text but does not eject the page, and the display shows PRINTING The paper has to be manually pulled out of the printer and it has to be power cycled to resume normal operation. I will attach the document used. I've turned on the error log, but it's about 14MB, rather large to upload. I'll be returning the printer today, and travelling for perhaps a week, but after that I'm keen to resume investigation, though this is my first time with a printer problem so I'll be appreciating any guidance. In contrast, printing from Firefox and Gedit have not shown any problem. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1346868] Re: Canon MX310 printer hangs when printing LibreOffice Writer doc
Thanks for quick response. I did follow as much of that as seemed relevant to me. Can you be more specific? By the way, I had difficulty following the instructions to turn on the error log. The gear icon in 14.04 has no 'Printer' in its menu (and 12.04 has 'Printers', not 'Printer'). Though once I explored 12.04 and realised that the intent was to use the standard dialog in System Settings, I got past that. It's a wiki, but it's an immutable page, so someone needs to fix it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1346868 Title: Canon MX310 printer hangs when printing LibreOffice Writer doc Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: New Linux user reports problem printing letters from Lenovo T60 with Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) on Canon MX310 printer using LibreOffice 4.2.4.2. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode
This one has always irritated the heck out of me, because I often don't know in advance of starting Nautilus that I'm going to want to change something in a root-owned file. But I've been resigned to it because I imagined there was some insuperable difficulty in implementing it. And when my students hit this problem I get a little defensive and tell them it's not the developers' fault, it's due to the restrictions in Linux that prevent processes gaining root, which would create a security risk. I've recently switched to Crunchbang. Imagine my surprise when I found the file manager there can do what I want! The file manager is Thunar. So I googled for 'thunar privilege escalation' and found an interesting article: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/file-browser-privilege- escalation-done-right/ More than 9 years since this serious usability bug was filed. Almost 7 years since that psychocats article. The wonderful thing about open source development is the speed of progress, the way that problems are fixed quickly and systems are updated. @supersasho: Since it's (allegedly) trivial, how about you propose a patch to fix it? Or find someone else to help you create such a patch? It's open source. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 912597] Re: nautilus doesn't delete files on USB sticks eject
On the contrary, why isn't it a good thing having a trash folder, instead of immediate delete? If you consider the trash folder for your main drive is good, why not for a usb drive as well? Behaviour should be consistent, so that's it's easier to learn, easier to predict. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/912597 Title: nautilus doesn't delete files on USB sticks eject Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Confirmed Status in Nautilus: Expired Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Hi! Nautilus, when working on files within connected USB memory stick /flash or hardrive/, when a folder/file is selected and delete key pressed, files aren't deleted but moved into hidden .trash directory- which isn't deleted when drive is unmounted- also those hidden files occupy space on drive, which isn't visible when you choose still visible files /just to know, how much space is left etc/. that can cause a confusion /yes, i know you can manually delete .trash folder from usb drive, but- why?/. proposed solution? if device isn't locally connected /but is usb or esata etc/ than files should be deleted permanently- i.e. user should get a warning like you are going to delete your files permanently. you won't be able to recover them. continue? y/n. also, those memory sticks should be connected with sync option- so manual unmounting /i.e. with mouse, not via command/ them wouldn't be that necessary /it would shorten the time for 'ejection' of disks mounted/. bet regards simon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/912597/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1004994] Re: Firefox sub-menu initial letter shortcuts don't work in Unity
I've found that in 12.10 Alpha1 I can restore the correct operation by disabling Global Menu Bar integration 3.2.4pre add-on (which I never installed, so presumably came as part of 12.04). I don't know whether I'm losing something else as a result of disabling this add-on, but everything seems to work ok. Besides which, typical users are familiar with using the numeric keypad for this in other applications, such as Firefox. Repro'd using 12.04 daily build 2012-04-07 i386 with a UK keyboard layout. Also verified on 10.10 i386 using a US keyboard layout.
