[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307109] Re: Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

2014-04-17 Thread Jonathan Davies
** Description changed:

I have smart card reader built-into this laptop, however, whenever I
insert a card - it'll read it for a few seconds, then the USB connection
to the reader gets powered down and thus the card disappears in the
  systems eyes.

After a few seconds, it comes back and everything's happy.

Then the cycle repeats again and again and again.
-
- I think this is more a kernel issue than a pcscd one as, going by the
- logs, pcscd appears to be doing the right thing when the card
- disappears.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307109] Re: Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

2014-04-16 Thread Jonathan Davies
OK, in comments #22 and #23, we have outputs with ccid compiled with the
patch to add some more debug in #24.

Comment #22 features a working Lenovo laptop.

Comment #23 features the HP laptop.

For some reason, the HP laptop hits the IFDHICCPresence() function's
CCID_ICC_PRESENT_INACTIVE case and drops to the else statement, while
this doesn't happen on the Lenovo.

Title:
Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “pcsc-lite” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have smart card reader built-into this laptop, however, whenever I
insert a card - it'll read it for a few seconds, then the USB
connection to the reader gets powered down and thus the card
  disappears in the systems eyes.

After a few seconds, it comes back and everything's happy.

Then the cycle repeats again and again and again.

I think this is more a kernel issue than a pcscd one as, going by the
logs, pcscd appears to be doing the right thing when the card
  disappears.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1307109] Re: Alcor Micro AU9540 keeps powering down when card is present

2014-04-15 Thread Jonathan Davies
That output above is what happens without touching the card or running
an application - it just sits there with Card present, as soon as I do
something like 'opensc-tool -l' - the card is absent and then it
eventually loops back to present.

I think this is more a kernel issue than a pcscd one as, going by the
logs, pcscd appears to be doing the right thing when the card
  disappears.

   * I have posted a sample connection created below, with username and
password keyed in manually

  $ cat /etc/NetworkManager/system-connection/example

   * I dont see any regression potential with the patch for

The /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file is a conffile, which means that packages
are not allowed to modify it.

As a result, if any package is modifying /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
on installation to set 'greeter-show-manual-login=true', will cause
users of this package to have conffile prompts on future upgrades.

It would be helpful if lightdm had some supported mechanism for

  as an /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d directory .

I'd like to upload a new unity-greeter to raring with a new feature.
System administrators have been requesting the ability to add new
custom indicators to the greeter. And to be able to control the
  greeter slightly with those indicators.

In trunk, we've added support for this in two ways:
   * Have the list of loaded indicators be controlled by a gsettings variable
under the lightdm user, which system administrators can customize.
   * Add a session DBus interface to the greeter to allow switching which user
is selected. This is only available to the greeter session bus, not on the
system bus.

Note that these features are not used by default, they'd only be used
if an administrator specifically chose to use them.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1116317] Re: Needs option to create user connections by default

2013-03-13 Thread Jonathan Davies
** Description changed:

NetworkManager needs a setting that makes it create new connections as
  user connections by default.

  org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system can be used to
allow access, however, you don't always want to have users edit system
  connections.
+
+ [Impact]
+ Before 12.04, new connections in NetworkManager were user-connections.
Organisations could use this to lock down certain connections to system
connections.
+
+ Today, non-admin users are shown a Please enter root password prompt
+ when trying to connect to an unknown (wireless) network. Which is
+ undesirable as these users may not know the root password.
+
+ A workaround is to grant the users
+ 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system' access, however
+ this may be desirable as corporate networks may be defined in system-
+ connections that adminstators may not want users to change.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Today: Connect to a new wireless network as a non-admin user, see
+ that a password dialog is displayed.
+
+ * With patch, set a PolicyKit rule of:
+
+
+ [Adding or changing system-wide NetworkManager connections]
+ Identity=unix-user:*
+ Action=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system
+ ResultActive=no
+
+ [Adding or changing user-owned NetworkManager connections]
+ Identity=unix-user:*
+ Action=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.own
+ ResultActive=yes
+
+
+ ...connect to a new wireless network as a non-admin user and see in
+ /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections that a user-connection instead of
+ system one has been defined, no root password should be requested
+ either.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ None, as we do not touch the default configuration for 12.04 LTS.

  connections.

  [Impact]
Before 12.04, new connections in NetworkManager were user-connections.
Organisations could use this to lock down certain connections to system
connections.

Today, non-admin users are shown a Please enter root password prompt
when trying to connect to an unknown (wireless) network. Which is
undesirable as these users may not know the root password.

A workaround is to grant the users
  'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system' access,
however this may be desirable as corporate networks may be defined in
system-connections that adminstators may not want users to change.

  [Test Case]

   * Today: Connect to a new wireless network as a non-admin user, see
that a password dialog is displayed.

   * With patch, set a PolicyKit rule of:

[Adding or changing system-wide NetworkManager connections]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system
  ResultActive=no

[Adding or changing user-owned NetworkManager connections]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.own
  ResultActive=yes

...connect to a new wireless network as a non-admin user and see in
  /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections that a user-connection instead
of system one has been defined, no root password should be requested
  either.

  [Regression Potential]
None, as we do not touch the default configuration for 12.04 LTS.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1130097] Re: geoclue-ubuntu-geoip doesn't support proxies

2013-03-13 Thread Jonathan Davies
** Description changed:

geoclue-ubuntu-geoip doesn't seem to support proxy settings, even when
they're set in /etc/environment or the System Settings → Network
  section.

This would be useful for corporate networks where outgoing HTTP is
blocked, except for when allowed via a proxy.
+
+ [Impact]
+ System components should respect system proxy settings.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ With non-patched packages, run: kill -9 the geoclue-master and
ubuntu-geoip-provider processes while running tcpdump on ports 80 and the port
of one's HTTP proxy server.
+
+ One will see the connections go straight to port 80 on the IPs above
+ rather than via the proxy.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ None.

  upgrade, no longer appear.)

Breaks with smart card auth with pkcs11

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
For some reason, after enabling smart card authentication with pkcs11.
gnome-settings-daemon would segfault, while looking for:

  open(/usr/lib/pkcs11/libcoolkeypk11.so, O_RDONLY|O_CLOEXEC) = -1
ENOENT (No such file or directory)

Because of the segfault, it would take up to ~15 seconds for the
desktop to load after LightDM finised.

Installing the coolkey package (in universe), fixes these problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 367175] Re: thunderbird not using indicator applet

** Changed in: thunderbird (Ubuntu)
   Status: Triaged = Fix Released

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
  thunderbird not using indicator applet

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird Mail and News:

Status in “thunderbird” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: thunderbird

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 9.04
  Release: 9.04

  $ apt-cache policy thunderbird
  thunderbird:
Installed: 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu1.9.04.1
Candidate: 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu1.9.04.1

  500 http://ftp.uninett.no jaunty/main Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

With the Upgrade to 9.04, I got the indicator applet in my task bar,
and I like it a lot. However, while Pidgin and volume control and
brightness control and such use it, my Thunderbird mail client is not
using the indicator applet. I was under the impression that this
indicator applet would show when one had incoming mail, and even show
the amount of mail you have waiting for you. This does not seem to be
the case with Thunderbird. This is a request for support for the
  indicator applet in Thunderbird.

Bug description:
At system start, when LightDM automatically places the user selection
at the user who logs in the most (or logged in last, I don't know), if
there's a list of users, LightDM goes all the way till there rapidly
changing background for each user it passes over. This seems to make
LightDM lag and also creates a confusing first look.

  Running Ubuntu 12.04.
