[Desktop-packages] [Bug 362359] Re: Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

2020-07-01 Thread aaronfranke
I just experienced this behavior with Ubuntu 20.04 (Gnome, X11, Nvidia
GTX 1070). Only one window had focus. Some windows appeared in front of
the focused window, but I could not click on them - clicking on them
only sent mouse clicks to the window in the background. The "dots" in
the dock that show what applications are open all disappeared, and if I
moved my mouse over the apps then they became highlighted and wouldn't
un-highlight. This is the first time I've experienced this issue, I've
been using Ubuntu 20.04 since release, and 18.04 before that since its
release.

Title:
Focus gets stuck to a window - impossible to select other windows

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Alright, terribly annoying bug that gets me to reboot several times a
day, but very hard to understand how to trigger it.

What happens: after some time of usage, you get "stuck" in a window. Idem
est, you can not select another window.
You can still click, select and drag in the window that has the focus, but
clicking on other windows, or on the panel, just doesn't work.

  Notes:
  - With window I don't mean "application window". For example it can only be
the page view in firefox, and you won't be able to click the buttons or the
URL field. It can also be the main text window in xchat, and you wont be able
to click in the user list or to change the chatroom.
  - The click seems to be grabbed by the window having the focus, even if you
click outside of it. For example, using xchat, if the main text window has
focus, clicking and dragging in the user list will actually select text in the
main text window.
  - Using xev, it seems that clics do not get passed to the correct window at
all (nothing received)
  - I have no idea what triggers this as sometimes it will trigger alone - pc
works, I leave it for an hour, I come back, the problem is triggered
  - Curious effect now: dragging and dropping to another window gives focus to
the window, and seems to be the only way to do so. For example if in firefox
the main page view window has the focus and I cant click the buttons, drag and
dropping text to the buttons gives the focus to the buttons, and I can't clic
the page view window anymore. Drag and dropping a button to the page view
window gives it its focus back

  Additional info:
  * Compiz disabled
  * Intel graphic card
  * Ubuntu jaunty - latest patches
  * Using a laptop, with an USB mouse

HAL, xserver, I have no idea where to file this bug into. I hope it will be
fixed before the release, it is really terribly annoying :s
Please tell me if there is any other detail I can provide.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1762310] [NEW] Upgrade the Mono version to 5.x

2018-04-08 Thread aaronfranke
Public bug reported:

It appears that the Mono version included in Bionic Beaver is `4.6.2.7
+dfsg-1ubuntu1`. This is a fairly outdated version considering that Mono
5.0 stable was released about a year ago. Many new Mono programs require
a Mono version that is 5.x. For example, Godot states that they require
Mono 5.4.

Without upgrading the Mono version, users of new Mono applications will have to
manually add a repository to get the latest Mono.
http://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/#download-lin-ubuntu
This is not ideal, we should upgrade the Mono version in the Ubuntu repos.

I had this bug happened to me. Opened GIMP, but couldn't save a file to

Launching the same program from the GNOME interface or the Terminal
  works fine.

Tested on Ubuntu 17.10 64-bit Beta2 Artful Aardvark.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1722003] [NEW] Some free (gratis) packages require logging in with a Snap Store account

2017-10-07 Thread aaronfranke
Public bug reported:

https://i.redd.it/ellp7c7yggqz.png

Some free (gratis) packages require logging in with a Snap Store account
in Ubuntu/GNOME Software.

This is, quite frankly, ridiculous. I should not need an account to
install any software. Neither should anyone else. These packages are
available via package managers with no account required, therefore the
GUI front end, this Ubuntu/GNOME Software app, should not require an
account either.

** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1566411] Re: bamfdaemon keeps crashing, crashing x

2016-09-17 Thread aaronfranke
I have this issue as well. My ~/.xsession-errors.old file contains this:

openConnection: connect: No such file or directory
cannot connect to brltty at :0
upstart: bamfdaemon main process (2855) terminated with status 1
upstart: bamfdaemon main process ended, respawning
upstart: bamfdaemon main process (9791) killed by TERM signal
upstart: Disconnected from notified D-Bus bus

Sometimes, I'm kicked to the LightDM login screen, as what happened this
time and is what the error here is showing. Other times, Xorg crashes
entirely, leaving me unable to get to the terminal sessions on
Ctrl+Alt+F1-6, and I get this error after rebooting:
https://i.imgur.com/JEveI1z.png

The crashes always seem to happen for me when I put my GPU under load,
such as when playing a game, when I was editing an image in GIMP, and
when I was watching Netflix in Google Chrome. I do not crash under
Windows 8.1 (dual-boot).

I have an Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M running the 340.96 drivers from
nvidia-340 (proprietary, tested) and Xubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit is my OS.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1572871] Re: gnome-software (ubuntu-software) doesn't install third party applications

2016-07-08 Thread aaronfranke
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1573408 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573408

I can't believe that such a critical bug was allowed in an LTS release
and has remained for months and months. This needs to be fixed before
16.04.1 LTS.

I really don't understand why they didn't just continue including the
ubuntu-software-center package instead, as it works much better than
this broken tool.

Executing should be the default behavior. The fact that it's not
possible to execute at all except by opening the Terminal is insane.
