I tend to agree with Stephen. With IRC, I think there is an assumption that
people know what it is and how to use it.

If I had to choose, I would be +1 to Slack from my own personal experience of
both

I am a strong -1 on maintaining multiple formats for this

Dublin conference

2015-06-16 Thread Giles Sirett
All

ACT NOW: submit a talk for CCC

We've had a very poor response to the CFP for CCC Dublin on 8-9 October. I
understand that there has been a lot of CFT emails flying around because of the
change of conference format this year. However, we want the Dublin event to be
the "goto" event for this community this year

Without your input as speakers, we do not have an agenda and without an agenda
we cannot get sponsors to pay for the event

I know the event seems a long way off, but if anybody on this list is thinking
of attending, please consider submitting a speaking proposal.

The CFP formally closes *tomorrow* , but likely we will hold it open for a few
days yet

Kind Regards
Giles

CCCEU15 - call for volunteers

2015-05-22 Thread Giles Sirett
Excuse the cross -posting

On 8-9 October, we will be having a 2 day CloudStack Collab conference in
Dublin.
As this will be the only Collab conference this year, I do hope that as many of
you as possible will attend (although don't forget the upcoming CloudStackDays
in Tokyo and Seattle)

www.cloudstackcollab.org

I have a number of appeals for help with this event.

1. Register
please try and get to the event. The more of this community can be there, the
better the event will be. Encourage your friends and colleagues to attend

2. Submit your talks
We rely on submitted content to be able to put together the agenda. Last year
in Budapest we had a fantastic agenda - because people submitted talks. Please
consider submitting a talk on whatever you fancy (as long as its kinda
Cloudstack related :)).
We really need to get an agenda published ASAP (it helps drive the sponsors),
so please, please get some talks submitted ASAP

3. Reviewing papers
I have also been coerced into coordinating the submissions. So, I'm also
looking for some volunteers to help review papers and choose which to accept.

4. Sponsorship
Like any conference, we rely on sponsors to be able to put on a great event.
I know most people on these lists wont directly hold sponsorship budgets, but
it would be great if you're able to see if your organisation may be prepared to
sponsor.

Theres more info on the website, or put your people in touch with Kevlin Husser
kev...@linuxfoundation.org - he's the guy
coordinating the sponsorship

Kind Regards
Giles

Although I am a fan of the 1 day cloudstackdays format, it did mean that we
didn’t have a natrual point for the community to meet. I'm very much hoping
that as many of us as possible can get together now 7-8 October

Cloudstack and guiness - whats not to like ?

RE: ACS 4.5 Release [URGENT]

2015-03-10 Thread Giles Sirett
All
I've just pinged private@ for view from other members of PMC on this, but
personally I do agree with people here that we should not ship something with
such a glaring known defect (especially seeing its able to be fixed quickly)

From a "constitutional perspective" I think this is a unprecedented situation
,and I'm not sure how it can be handled (i.e. we need to effectively cancel the
results of a vote)

I'm also not sure what wheels have been set in motion in terms of
announcements, etc but IMO those wheels should be paused

If people are generally in agreement, I suggest that somebody calls an
unorthodox [cancel release] vote ASAP (I'll leave it to somebody more active
on dev). I know that’s unprecendented and not sure how it fits the bylaws, but
at least we have an audit trail of the desire to do this

We can then spin RC5 with this patch and then vote on that afresh

Thoughts?

Giles

Cross posting to marketing & dev

I had the displeasure of reading this article this morning
http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2015/02/23/openstack-vs-cloudstack-the-platforms-and-the-cloud-apis/

Initially I thought it was an old article that had been re-hashed, but then I
saw his reference to our downloads page:
http://cloudstack.apache.org/downloads.html

which clearly says “Apache CloudStack's most current release is 4.4.2”. Hence
this article citing it as our current release (yes, theres other badly
researched “facts” in the article also)

Obviously, this had just an oversight during the 4.3,4.4 releases and I
understand when everybody is trying to get a release out of the door, updating
the website isn’t always going to be the top priotiy

This leads me to ask: have we, as a community, got some form of checklist for a
release ? I’m thinking about all of the tasks (such as updating the website)
“around” the code release, however I could ask the same question for the actual
release itself

The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache CloudStack has asked Erik
Weber to become a committer and we are pleased to announce that they have
accepted.

Erik is doing a great job on helping the community thru the mailing list.
He helped a lot on testing and troubleshooting new releases of CloudStack as
well as contributing to the documentation. Thanks Erik and Congrat!

Being a committer allows many contributors to contribute more autonomously. For
developers, it makes it easier to submit changes and eliminates the need to
have contributions reviewed via the patch submission process. Whether
contributions are development-related or otherwise, it is a recognition of a
contributor's participation in the project and commitment to the project and
the Apache Way.

Please join me in congratulating Erik

RE: [DISCUSS] Automatic usage reporting / call-home for CloudStack

2014-12-12 Thread Giles Sirett
Hi Wido

I recently had a thought on this.

Although I would be loathed that anybody has to "register" ACS when they use
it, it would be good if we could differentiate between production deployments
and lab/bench deployments.
From the marketing perspective, we've got this crazy situation where we KNOW
that there are many 100's of people running ACS but still only 70 people told
us about their use in the last survey.
The problem is, if we don’t differentiate between prod/lab - then the data you
collect will be padded with people running it in their home labs.

I'm not sure how we can go about doing this. The simplest thing would be a
global setting, but where would the incentive be for people to change that
setting when they put something into production ?

Another approach, which some may think controversial, would be that we do an
"about" screen/page that allows people to change this setting.
This screen could display a summary of version, #pods, clusters, etc (all the
standard stuff people need to find out about their system) - so it would be
useful for people
It could also contain info on how to join/access the community/ML's for support
and (most controversially) it could give people the option to put in some
basic company information if they wished.
I totally understand that the last bit may be a thought too far some some people

[CFP] CloudStack Day Brazil

2014-12-05 Thread Giles Sirett
All

Marco & Cyrano are organising a "CloudStack day" in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 12
February 2015.
Format will be single track (maybe 5-6 talks) ,no "pay to play" talks , target
300 attendees.
There will be sponsors, but the event will be run on a non-profit basis

The University of Sao Paulo have kindly donated a venue
http://www.bbm.usp.br/node/19

If anybody is interested in speaking at this event, please let one of us know.
I understand that it is a long way for many people to travel, but the fact that
Carnival starts the next day may help persuade a few of you!

As per our byelaws, we should make an open offer to anybody in the community to
be involved in the selection of talks. If we actually get enough volunteers to
fly to Brazil (and have more talks than slots) - then we will do exactly that.
However, I anticipate that we may not actually get to that point.

Also, if any companies are interested in sponsoring the event, please let Marco
know - he will be working with a local events organiser who will be handling
sponsorship

RE: CloudStack Job offering @exoscale

2014-11-27 Thread Giles Sirett

But being such a small community right now, I think its great to see Exoscale
creating developer roles around Cloudstack and agree, right now, that this is
the most sensible place to post them - really good news Antoine.
At the same time its worth mentioning that ShapeBlue have a number of
Cloudstack dev & Engineering positions open
Shapeblue.com/careers
And, yes, Interoute are also hiring Cloudstack people

As the jobs market around Cloudstack is clearly developing (what a fantastic
sign), long-term, nobody wants to see our dev list getting spammed by
recruiters, etc - but I also do think it is useful for people in our community
to see that, if they want, they can develop their careers around ACS
May I suggest that we encourage people going forward to use the various
Cloudstack linkedin groups for these sort of subjects - that would keep these
out of the dev list

Thoughts ?

CloudStack repos

2014-10-28 Thread Giles Sirett
Hi All

ShapeBlue is now publicly hosting CloudStack APT/YUM repositories and SystemVM
templates for everyone. To know more about why we did this please read our blog
post: http://shapeblue.com/apache-cloudstack/cloudstack-packages-repository/ ‎

We have committed to doing this going forwards for the project. The underlying
infrastructure is kindly provided by BT Cloud Compute

ShapeBlue’s CloudStack packages hosting aims to deliver a reliable and trusted
source of getting Apache CloudStack 4.2.0 and above builds that are GPG signed
with information on releases such as release notes, install and admin
documentation, api docs etc all at one place. We also provide a choice of
repositories such as upstream (built out of voted/tagged Apache CloudStack
release), main (built out of official CloudStack releases with any patch/fixes
by ShapeBlue with separate release notes if the build differs official
CloudStack release) and testing (unstable/untested nightly builds). All APT/YUM
repository packages are noredist builds that means you get all the components
and features CloudStack has to offer.

For more details on using ShapeBlue CloudStack packages hosting please visit:

Kind Regards
Giles

CloudStack adoption survey

2014-06-27 Thread Giles Sirett
[cross posting]

All

We have just launched two new things on the Cloudstack.org website.

a) A list of known users of Cloudstack
(http://cloudstack.apache.org/users.html)

b) A survey of cloudstack adoption for users of the software to complete
(http://cloudstack.apache.org/survey.html)

As those of you who follow the marketing list will already know, Sally has been
working really hard to try and establish our known user base.
Getting people to complete this survey is a REALLY important element in that:
it will help Sally get the marketing message on ACS out.

The plan is to use the survey data to add and augment the initial user list
published

So please help us out:

1. If you're using cloudstack at your org (I guess most of us are :) ) -
TAKE THE SURVEY

2. If you're friend at work is using cloudstack in the org: get them to -
TAKE THE SURVEY

3. If you buy instances from a provider using cloudstack, get them to -
TAKE THE SURVEY

4. If you know customers or others using cloudstack. Get them to TAKE THE
SURVEY

5. Please get busy on twitter, linkedin ,blogs, etc - encourage people to
- TAKE THE SURVEY

6. If somebody you once met at a conference is using Cloudstack, call
them up and get them to - go figure

Please please get involved in helping to promote this. Don't leave it to others
- get involved !

Kind Regards
Giles

[Announce] New Committer: Lucian Paul (Nux)

2014-04-07 Thread Giles Sirett
The Project Management Committee (PMC) for Apache CloudStack has
asked Lucian Paul (Nux) to become a committer and we are pleased to announce
that he has accepted.

Please join me in congratulating Nux!

Per our project bylaws, we are changing our project's chair today!

Over discussions during the last month the PMC had reached a consensus to
recommend to the ASF board that Hugo Trippaers be accepted as the next Apache
CloudStack PMC Chair / VP of Apache CloudStack. As of today's ASF board
meeting, this has been accepted and made official.

Please join me in congratulating Hugo in his new role!

It's been an honor serving the project as it's chair over the last year, and
although I regret that my recent contributions have been diminished due to a
change in $dayjob, I'm exceptionally proud to be part of this community. Apache
CloudStack is amazing software, and the community that has formed around the
code since it's donation to the ASF is nothing short of remarkable.

RE: CloudStack implementations

2014-03-18 Thread Giles Sirett
Wido
+1 on that idea

I know many people get nervous about such things for a FOSS project, so we
would need to make sure that anything is transparent, is VERY careful about
data and gives people the option to opt-out

The simple fact is that we don't currently have any idea how many production
deployments, their scale,etc

We did a survey last year and got c.270 responses - but we had to promote the
awareness of that surevey and there were plenty of ACS sites I know of who
just didn't respond. There will be many others that I don't know of

What differentiates ACS from other similar techs IMO is the number of
production deployments. If we cant quantify that, it sounds like a lot of hot
air.

Another approach, may be to put a "showcase" area on the website where people
can submit their own sort of case studies

Giles

[promote] CCCNA14

2014-03-17 Thread Giles Sirett
All

Don't shoot me for cross posting this, I feel the whole of our community should
be aware of CCCNA14 and the need to promote it as a community effort (and I'm
sure dev@ will welcome a break from 4.3 vote threads :) )

CCCNA14 is 3 weeks away and we need to try and encourage as many people as
possible to register and come along to, what looks like, a great conference.
The Linux foundation guys are doing a great job, but WE are the people who use
& develop Cloudstack: we are the people who need to get involved.
In order to do that we, as a community, need to make some noise about the
conference.

So, please get busy on social media, write some blogs (just doing mine now) ,
contact your colleagues, friends, customers, etc
Hashtags #CCCNA14
#Apachecon

If you're speaking: why don't you promote your own talk?
If you've got a colleague speaking: why don't you promote their talk ?
If theres a talk on the schedule that youre interested in - why don't you
promote it ?
If you know anybody whos using Cloudstack (or integrating with it) - make sure
they know about this conference (don't assume they'll know already)
If you're sponsoring, make sure you tell the world that you are

BTW: is anybody on these lists based in Colorado ? (I know the Solidfire guys
are) . For CCCEU13, we got quite a few local technology people to come along.
Would be great to repeat that.

I see target attendees falling into the two following categories:

1. Cloudstack folks who we may persuade to come to Denver for the
conference

2. People attending ApacheCon the days before who we can convince to stay
on and check out cloudstack

The speaker lineup looks great.

RE: 4.4 Feature Freeze

2014-03-04 Thread Giles Sirett
I'm coming in late to this debate, but have been watching closely.

I am -1 on moving the freeze date
To put it more generally: I am -1 on ANYTHING that will have a potential impact
on quality right now.
Whatever anybody says, I can bet that a shorter code freeze (even temporary)
will have an impact on quality

I am not a developer, but I see the downstream fallout of features being rushed
in with the users of this software

>From my experience in the field: customers (users) do not rush to upgrade ACS
>anyway. Most of the orgs I know would accept a 3 month delay if they knew the
>quality was going to be, on average, higher (obviously, we all have that one
>feature that *we* want and think is low risk - but I'm generalising here)

We've already got a pretty frequent release cycle . This will be frustrating
for some of you guys I know (understand many people working like crazy to build
new features) , but we all know the release cycle, we all know the code freeze
window.

I fully understand that 4.3 has been a pain to get out of the door and is the
root cause of this situation. If we have less time to test 4.4, we run the risk
of having the same happen again.

If that means that 4.4 needs to ship with fewer features. So be it

Why the rush ? if it's not done, it's not done and will get in later. Why rush
to merge code that you know will have bugs ?

I think we're having this discussion after every release because
we're beginning to realize that a four-month release cycle has not
been very realistic for us yet.

The main issue I encounter is our month-long RC cycle where I spend
a bunch of time validating the RC and (during that timeframe) less
time developing for the next release as I had initially planned.

Perhaps instead of extending the cycle we could consider ways to
actually meet the schedule on a consistent basis. That would be
 fine, as

RE: Blacklists for passwords

2014-01-22 Thread Giles Sirett
I would +1 Demetrius' initial suggestion, however its not just blacklists, its
masking to make sure that the pwd's are of sufficient strength

I expect some form of password strength control in every aspect of IT these
days and I shudder when I type Root and "password" into our labs builds !

I (as a guy in an enterprise evaluating ACS) would expect to see some form of
validation.

+1 to Daan's idea: it needs to be configurable. Different environments will
have different complexity requirements.

I would *guess* that there's some standard password masking code out there
somewhere ?

Further more it should imo be configurable as to what the format must be that
the password adheres to.

Hope this spikes some opposition,

RE: DR as a service in CloudPlatform?

2014-01-08 Thread Giles Sirett
Hi Octavian

The closest thing in CloudStack that I know of is probably GSLB - but it won't
start individual VMs up in a different zone but transfer the traffic to a
different zone if 'primary' zone fails

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/GSLB+%28Global+Server+Load+Balancing%29+Functional+specification+and+Design+Document

WRT Citrix Cloudplaform : this isn't really the right place to ask about the
Citrix roadmap. You should ask your Citrix rep that

I am a big +1 for literally forcing devs to submit docs for user facing
features, otherwise the feature does not get added.
Just like unit tests. No unitests, no commit, no docs, no commit.
The devs are the best to write the docs of their own feature.

cloudstack usage survey

2013-05-31 Thread Giles Sirett
All
Over on @marketing, we've been working on a user survey. This will hopefully
give us a much better view of the current CloudStack User base
The survey is here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/28BV97D

We need to try and get as many cloudstack users as possible to respond.
So, I'd appreciate as much support as possible: I need people to speak to
users, to tweet, to mention at meetups, etc, etc
I'm conducing the survey on behalf of the community. The questions have been
discussed by the @marketing list. The data is to be treated confidentially and
will be analysed by myself and Sebastien. The results will be anonymous/summary
only. The source data will be destroyed and a copy help only at to

"This listing does not represent official endorsement by the Apache CloudStack

Inclusion of a book in the listing would be done via a vote on the marketing@

As a quick summary, alternatives to this proposal were to:
1-not do anything
2-list the books on the wiki

A few of us have already expressed their opinions and discussed the

Vote will be open for 96 hours (To accommodate Memorial day in the USA).

Hugo - I think that's a very pragmatic approach. Whilst it would be great to
upgrade any version to any other version, I think most people are used to

Subject: [DISCUSS] Backwards compatibility

Hey all,

We have invested a lot of effort in creating upgrade paths from older releases
to the latest version. As a sysadmin this is one of the things I value
CloudStack for.

However as a developers there are some drawbacks to this. It means every time
we release a new version we need to QA the entire upgrade path to check if
users can upgrade to this new versions. With the speed and features we are
picking up, I'm expecting this to become a large burden in the near future. My
proposal would be to draw a line somewhere. Personally I think it would be ok
to say to a user that wants to upgrade from version 2.2.14 to 4.2 to first
upgrade to version 4.0.x en than upgrade to 4.2.x. For our code it does not
really matter that much, but it does matter for QA and packaging.

For QA we can safely assume that the upgrades from 2.2.14 to 4.0 are covered by
the 4.0 release. If we run into trouble, we release a maintenance release of
that version. QA for new versions should focus on a stable upgrade path for one
or two recent versions and can "ignore" old versions in the process. With only
a few versions to test against we could also automate parts of this.

For packaging it is also great. Especially with the current changes in naming
(from cloud to cloudstack) and potential future changes to integrate better
with distributions it becomes handy to be able to have short upgrade paths.
How reasonable is it to have an upgrade path for 2.2.14 in the RPM when that
rpm is built for RedHat 7.

I would be in favor of supporting upgrades from the first major release in any
series. For example 4.1, 4.2 and 5.0 should have a tested upgrade path from
4.0. 5.1 would have an upgrade path only from 5.0.

What do you guys think?

Cheers,

Hugo

P.S. ignore the version numbers, just used some random version numbers to
illustrate my ideas.

RE: [DISCUSS] Should we be releasing -beta releases?

2013-05-14 Thread Giles Sirett

It would be much easier for planning purposes if we had target dates for betas.
That would allow us to say to our user community "hey, we've got something new
for you to test, come and get it" - instead of people having to stay up to date
with the development and then choose when to start to test

Noticed Daan's point about the overhead & burdon, which is true, but I still
think it would be better this way

Yes to beta releases. I know that users could test at any time, but we need
explicit targets for users that say "now is a good time to test this and give

Hi,

Just a quick question here.

Once you've spun up a VM or created a data disk, is it possible to change the
characteristics of said VM or data disk (like give more RAM to the VM, increase
the size of the volume, etc.)?

Thanks!
