Starting a SIG for package reviews
For a while now I've wanted to get some sort of package review SIG going. The package review process hasn't really evolved much since it was instituted way back when, and now it (and the portion of the sponsorship process it overlaps) has become a major bottleneck in one of the main ways of getting new contributors into the project. I'm (once again*) looking for a few good volunteers to get the SIG off the ground. In the past every discussion about starting this SIG has sidetracked off into grand discussion about tools that can take care of the process, but at the start I'd like to focus on organization. How many people can we muster? Do we need to have some sort of regular IRC meetings? How can we best attack the ever-growing review queue? Once we have some basic things figured out and reasonable-sized group of people involved, we can move on to the big issues of policies, modifications to the process, working with FESCo and, yes, tools. So, if you want to help out, feel free to reply. Add yourself to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Package_Review#Members if you like. If you have ideas, add them to the brainstorming section there as well. *) Yes, I've tried to do this before, a good three years ago. It didn't get off the ground then, but it's never too late to try again and the need for this SIG is, I think, more pressing now than it's ever been. - J< -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

[Test-Announce] Fedora 16 branch today
Just a heads-up to let everyone know that Fedora 16 is now branched from Rawhide. This means that we're now into the phase where pre-Beta requirements for updates apply (see https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Updates_Policy): updates-testing is in effect for F16, so if you're running F16, remember to start firing up Bodhi and fedora-easy-karma and submitting karma from now on! Noone has asked to "hide it". :-) The proposal here is that both paths are included in $PATH by default. Your personal preference won't be hurt. The XDG spec found here: http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.html makes no reference of ~/.local/bin (or any other directories under ~/.local). FYI, I've just yum-updated my rawhide VM to the latest (but not from the console) and was surprised to lose the connection while it was happening. Again. It happened to me last week, too. I got back in via the console and tried to reinstall it via "yum reinstall openssh-server". That failed (sorry, didn't record the diagnostic). Just dug a little and found this was reported a week ago: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/722625 To fix it, I did this (from a console, of course): yum -y remove openssh-server && yum -y install openssh-server && service ssh restart -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

That argument seems like a straw man, considering that the file to be tested for was provided by the previous version of mysql-server, and that the test would only be made when we know we are upgrading (not freshly installing) mysql-server. It's hardly likely that anyone was providing a conflicting version of it. Moreover, what's the downside if someone did? His sysv-based boot configuration would get migrated to systemd. Not exactly fatal, I think. > Please read the link I posted to Ville's message instead[1]_. Thanks, but I do not intend to make it my job to do extensive testing of someone else's scriptlets. This work should have been done by the systemd team before foisting a poorly-thought-out upgrade process on the rest of us. On balance I still think that Michal's solution is the least risky. As Michal said in his post, the %post that he uses is problematic if someone has installed a package with sysv init scripts for that service. Please read the link I posted to Ville's message instead[1]_. Ville wrote his proposed scriptlets with awareness of that problem and, in his testing, they are able to deal with the problem provided that your old package used service instead of calling the init script directly ("service mysql condrestart" rather than "/etc/init.d/mysql condrestart"). He also proposes some scriptlets to address the init script case. No ones tested them on the FPC but Ville himself has done testing of them. Not sure if related, but during rawhide acceptance testing, it was found that generic-release was being favored instead of fedora-release. This was resulting in fedora-release-rawhide not being installed on the system. A recent update to the generic-release package has resolved the problem, and fedora-release* should now be installed. User-level instance of /bin in PATH
Hi. Since F15 ~/bin has been added to PATH, and commands that are supposed to run user scripts will work without changing into that directory. Meanwhile, ~/.local/bin isn't used. I'd like to propose that it is also added because technically it is ~/bin's brother. Yes, user scripts can be kept in ~/bin for editing purposes. I prefer to edit them where I run them, in a terminal, especially when using the machine remotely. And it would be nice for those who want to move scripts out of the way so these don't get deleted accidentally along with some user stuff. It takes some time to write a script and only a second to delete a bunch of files. -- Best regards, Misha Shnurapet, Fedora Project Contributor Email: shnurapet AT fedoraproject.org, IRC: misha on freenode https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/shnurapet, GPG: 00217306 -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

If at that point its all fairly minor only then review and see what it would take to push back into F-16. A rushed effort will only cause chaos right when we're suppose to be tightening and stabilising the release. If java se 7 was going to be in F-16 there should have been RCs in there for some time, the rough date for release has been known for some time and it should be planned. orphaning / looking for new owner for monkey-bubble
Hi, I've been thinking about orphaning monkey-bubble for a while now, mostly because it is dead upstream and it is using various obsolete gnome technologies (esound, libgnomeui, bonobo). Yesterday it came to my attention that monkey-bubble also contains at least 1 sound sample which we should not be re-distributing, as well as various sound samples from unclear origin. This has helped me make up my mind, and unless someone else jumps in to take it over (and fix the sound sample situation) I'm going to orphan it. So anyone want to take over monkey-bubble? There have been several Features over the past few releases that FESCo has decided on late. Those things were sometimes made into features only after prompting by people who realized that the changes were unannounced features. Things that require coordination between maintainers are a feature and FESCo has a right to veto them whether the authors of the feature have followed the feature process or not.
