[slim] Lost contact to Slimserver for v.6.1

2005-04-22 Thread Tore Johnsson
Hi Dean
Is application log only in version 6.xxx or will it be even in version
5.4.1.
In that case where do I find it in the Slimserver 5.4.1. and version 6.?

I have earlier tried http://serverip:9000/log.txt but as I said when
Slimserver was crashed there were no log.
Kind regards
Tore Johnsson

Hi Tore,

Ok, I didn't realize that SlimServer was actually crashing.

There should be a logged event in your Event Viewer under the
Application log that would have details which would probably explain
the issue.

I can´t send you a log file since I don´t know how to get it out when
 Slimserver has crashed.

Is it possible that you have a firewall or blocking software that could
be preventing outgoing connections and locking up slimserver?

Windows will keep those events around until you delete them, or the log grows

 Help! I'm going nuts!!!

So I figured out that Slimserver 6 ignores protected
AAC files which accounts for 16 of the 17 additional
tracks that iTunes shows in my music library.
However, I cannot figure out the last track that is
 missing.

Is there anything that would make Slimserver not count
a track that is in iTunes besides it being a protected
 AAC?

do you have any tracks marked as disabled in itunes?

do you have read permissions for slimserver for all files?

you could try running a scan with d_itunes turned on, then compare the log.
That could get messy with a lot of files, however.

Yes, I had this - as KDF said just poke 30 into the Alien BBC Web Page
Cache and all will be well (Actually I had it with about three other
preferences, as well).

The other issue I had with MusicMagic was I missed the option to enable
it within SlimServer - As well as appearing in the plugins page, it also
puts some options at the bottom of Server Settings - one of these is
something like Use MusicMagic or similar (sorry, I'm at work and
don't have the exact message to hand) - Check this and a rescan should
initiate - on completion, songs that show as green in MusicMagic should
have a little mm next to them in slimserver. Click on this to get a
playlist.

Incidentally, you will need a key for MM (bargain IMHO) and enable the
API from the options menu in MM.

2005-04-22 Thread slimp3

There are some software-tools for ripping DVD-audio, but I have no
experience in using them so I cannot give you any advice.

For creating surround wavs yourself: Audiotools that can handle surround
(Audition for example) can export 6 mono channels (FL, FR, C, SL, SR, LFE),
then you need an encoder like SURCODE DTS to creat the special DTS-wav
format.

Just for demonstrating purposes, there are some wavs's available for
download from the swedish radio:
http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm

NOTE: playing these files WITHOUT a surround decoder results in loud white
noise hiss, so be sure you have a surround receiver attached when playing
these files!

Enjoy,

No, this is most probably a plugin you've activated _after_ the server
start, or simple a false written address. On the browser you'd receive
something like page not found

may have gotten caught up in a process for longer than you wanted? I
have set network - timeout to 300 seconds.
That might be the problem: the timeout defines the time the process should
try to finish its task. During this period other tasks will wait for the
first to finish. If you define 300 seconds, the other tasks will have to
wait up to 5 minutes - which will cause the music to stop, the player to
lose contact to the server and the display to go blank. Maybe it has not
even crashed but would work again after 5 minutes.

Reduce the timeout to 15-30 seconds and try again.

Some brief observations:
* I find that it helps to restart the server after having done a Wipe

* The server is quite good at noticing added content with a simple
Rescan, but deleted or changed content is often (always?) not spotted.
* I am sure that the '6.0.1 Trunk' version on my Linux server at home
has a scheduled rescan capability, but on the Windows version here at
home, '6.0.1 2895', I simply can't locate it! I find it a very useful

There are some software-tools for ripping DVD-audio, but I have no
experience in using them so I cannot give you any advice.

By which I think we mean that there are tools for ripping the audio
from a DVD-Video disc, rather than ripping the audio from a DVD-Audio
disc, which is intended to be extremely difficult.

The Imtoo 'DVD Audio Ripper'
(http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-audio-ripper.html) is a cheap way of doing
this - I have not used this specific tool but the other Imtoo tools
I've tried seem to work as advertised. The 'DVD Audio Ripper' is
apparently able to rip AC3 streams and LPCM.

Surcode, from Minnetonka Audio Software (www.surcode.com) is an
extremely good range of software (as are all Minnetonka's products) but
not cheap, and aimed at the professional production market.

Slimserver6/SB2 does maintain bit-accuracy end to end, so you can save
any surround-encoded stream (AC3, DTS, etc) with a lossless method (I
use FLAC but WAV obviously works) that you can decode at the other end
- this would include an MLP stream, were you able to lay your hands on
one and had an accessible decoder for it at the other end.

[slim] SlimServer 6.0.1 - FLAC issues

2005-04-22 Thread parkyna

Hi there,

I'm a SB user running SlimServer on a Buffalo LinkStation (thanks to
Marc D. Field for this successful project). Previously I ran
SlimServer 5.4.1 streaming only MP3s or WAV.

I upgraded to SlimServer 6.0.1 because of the in-built FLAC streaming
capabilities. This works fine with SoftSqueeze (v2.014b I believe) and
initially worked ok with SB. However, it has stopped working even
though it is a ticked supported file type in the Server Settings area
(via the web interface).

Whenever I try to select a FLAC file with the SB it finds the file,
looks like it's going to play it and then comes up with a 'Can't Open
File' error. I have made no changes other than to increase the number
of FLAC files in my collection and a couple of reboots when Wipe
Cache/ReScan didn't seem to work.

I've now uninstalled/re-installed Slim Server 6.0.1 several times and
whatever I do I can't get the SB to play FLAC (it's fine with MP3 WAV
and SoftSqueeze CAN handle FLAC files).

Am I doing anything wrong? Did I dream that I got FLAC working with my
SB in the first place? Should 6.0.1 work for a SB where SlimServer is
insalled on a Buffalo LinkStation?

I'm going to buy a SB2 in the near future anyway but I'd really like to
get this cracked with my SB in the short term if possible and to ensure
the SB has a longer shelf-life (deployed in a different room for
instance).

Sorry for the long note and thanks for any help advice you can give me.
(PS. I'm an audio enthusiast rather than a techie so please simplify
any advice/recommendations!).

He's not creating new threads; his mailer (Outlook 11) is properly

References headers; both are equally SHOULD requirements in rfc2822. It

You've installed 6.1 on top of 6.0.x running Windows?

Go to the Plugins folder and remove the ShoutcastBrowser.pm, picks.pm and

But not all of the will actually work. Eg. only two of the total four form

Plugins and Internet Radio - I think yes. The second copy on each of these

tracks that were there in 5.4.1-1 are now missing.

Can you provide any details about those songs that are missing? Are you using
itunes, moodlogic or musicmagic? Are they located on a mapped drive, local
drive. Have you checked permissions?

you may also want to consider running from the command line, adding --d_info as
a command argument so that you can see the song info extraction as you rescan.
its a lot of info, but may highlight the exact problem

Also, there have been a lot of improvements made since 6.0.1 (latest official
release) and I believe a 6.0.2 release is expected soon. You can try out one
of the nightly builds and see if this gives you better results. There are two
types of nightly builds. Stable and Developers. Stable build is what will be
6.0.2, and developers builds will be 6.1. both are located here:

[slim] Add new album to cache

Is it possible to add just a single album to the slimserver cache,

When I add an album, I'd like to be able to just instruct slimserver

Is this (or could this be) possible; or is there a better way?

--Vidur
Vidur Apparao wrote:
The behavior you describe is consistent with my speculation of what
might be happening. When SlimServer completes streaming a track to the
SB2, it should close the streaming socket for that track. This is an
indication that there is no more data for that stream (the data itself
does not contain an end-of-stream marker). If, and only if, the
streaming socket has been closed, the device sends a decoder underrun
message when it finishes decoding the audio - this can be several
seconds to minutes after the socket has been closed, depending on how
much audio fits into the SB2's input audio buffer. The decoder
underrun message is an indicator to SlimServer that it should start
streaming the next track.

I'm speculating that the server isn't closing the streaming socket for
some reason, resulting in a severely delayed decoder underrun message.
The patch with the debug output hopefully will help me figure out why.

--Vidur
radish wrote:
Thanks for looking into this Vidur. I'll have a go at applying the patch
and running another test tonight if I get time.
To answer a couple of your points:
These players were synched once, when I first got the SB2 maybe a
couple of weeks ago. It didn't work quite how I liked (when synched the
players introduced short gaps between tracks which weren't there if not
synched) so I disabled it after like 20 mins. The server has been
upgraded at least twice and bounced many times since then.
To clarify a little about what happens when the SB2 stalls - as it's
approaching the end of the track everything is normal. Then, roughly 7
or 8 seconds before the end, the display locks up but the music still
plays to the end of the track. The display remains stuck until it wakes
back up again when the SB1 changes track. If I use the remote while it's
locked I can skip to the next track manually and it works fine. But it
will lock up again at the next transition.
The network is wireless, but with good signal strength and the bitrate
is ~1mbps (FLAC).
I should also point out that the SB1 playback never has any problems,
and if the SB1 isn't playing, neither does the SB2. This only occurs
when both players are playing at once.

I have. I've also noticed that Lyrics.pm spams the logs rather
verbosely, and re-fetches lyrics all the time -- caching lyrics would
 be
 a good idea, I think.

It might be neat to have it automatically advance the lyrics, instead
 of
requiring the user to page manually with the arrow buttons.

 - Marc

I did consider caching, but I guessed that most people are on
broadband, and that the server would only be hit once-per-song
(approx.), so I thought it would be more trouble than its worth.

Agree about the log spamming - I should turn it off by default.

As for auto-scrolling the lyrics, I don't know how you would work out
the timings - do you have any ideas?

Kipper,

With all of the useful, specific diagnostic information you've
provided I'm sure everyone will be jockeying for position to help you

You might get better results if you could provide information about
the files that are missing. There's probably something common to all
of them (tag issues) that is causing it but without that information
everyone will just have to guess why you are having issues. If you
could make one of the files available (preferably a small one) by
attaching it to a bug (http://bugs.slimdevices.com) then we can get
the ball rolling!

Re: [slim] OGG Files Skipping?

2005-04-22 Thread Aaron Zinck
If you have your player set to no limit then OGG is being streamed as FLAC
so it's likely that either your 802.11b network can't handle the much higher
bandwidth requirements of FLAC or, if you're running this on a real old
computer, it may not be able to keep up with the transcoding from OGG to
FLAC. I'd put my money on the bandwidth issue since most folks have
reported fairly low processor demands for the transcoding.

If it is the bandwidth then you'll need to work on improving your wireless
reception (perhaps an upgrade to G is in order?) or you could turn on
bitrate limiting and suffer a (slight) loss in audio quality by
recompressing to MP3.

2005-04-22 Thread kipper

5.x had a few quirks from my point of view

I just upgraded to latest version of 6 to find that although the
overall numbers of files found seems to be right, songs and artists
that I KNOW are in there do not show up.

Search can't find 'em, and browsing to some albums will show that some
tracks that were there in 5.4.1-1 are now missing.

downgrading to 5.4.1-1 has resurrected those files, but I'm certainly
no longer considering getting any more squeezeboxes/squeezebox2s as the
software seems to be getting worse.

I can't fully appreciate the scale of the problems as I don't have the
time to examine the nearly 15000 files to see exactly how many aren't
showing up, but I hope that the problems are addressed soon

[slim] improved equalizer?

2005-04-22 Thread Super-Gonzo

Is there any chance that the new sb2 will, in the future, include
improved equalizer functionality?

A built-in 30-band graphic equalizer would be pretty slick :)

(..and definately give me a reason to upgrade from my sb1)

I have. I've also noticed that Lyrics.pm spams the logs rather
verbosely, and re-fetches lyrics all the time -- caching lyrics would be
a good idea, I think.

It might be neat to have it automatically advance the lyrics, instead of
requiring the user to page manually with the arrow buttons.

I have just downloaded and installed the latest version of the lyrics
screensaver. When I tried to run it, it crashes my slimserver.

I believe that earlier versions required XML::DOM, but the latest
version claims to have removed the dependency on this (I do not have
this installed as I don't know how!)

Does the latest versions still require this component? If it does,
 how
do I go about installing it on a Windows system? if it doesn't, can
anyone suggest why it might be crashing my system?

 Cheers,

 Bob

I've just uploaded version 0.4 of Lyrics.pm that might solve some of
these problems. Give it a go and let me know how you get on.

Oh yes it is - but on very long timescales!

I've just uploaded version 0.4 Lyrics.pm that should fix the SlimServer
6 compatibility problems. Download it from
http://slimlyrics.sourceforge.net and let me know if there are still
problems with it.

[slim] Environmental Sounds?

2005-04-22 Thread Michael Haan
My new SB2's arrived today. First things first - nice job. Makes me wonder what the SB3 will do.

So, I read that the alarm clock can play environmental sounds - what's that all about?

[slim] Re: What is the status of 6.01

2005-04-22 Thread Dan Sully
* relen shaped the electrons to say...
* I find that it helps to restart the server after having done a Wipe Cache.
This has been fixed in what will become 6.0.2 6.1 - ie the nightly builds.
* The server is quite good at noticing added content with a simple
Rescan, but deleted or changed content is often (always?) not spotted.
Deleted and changed content is lazily removed. This will be actively removed
in a future verison.
* I am sure that the '6.0.1 Trunk' version on my Linux server at home
has a scheduled rescan capability, but on the Windows version here at
home, '6.0.1 2895', I simply can't locate it! I find it a very useful
feature, and have it set to do a rescan at 5am, by which time I hope I
will not still be awake ripping my CD collection!
It's under Settings-Plugins, which is not the most intuitive place. A
rework of the
Rescan/Wipe settings will likely move the scheduled rescan functionality into
that setting pane.

it can play anything you like, as long as you have a playlist for it. This is
the current state of play, but there is a lot more to come. Some of it has
been mentioned as you now know, but the full details haven't come out just yet.
 Stay tuned for the announcements.
