[slim] Ouch! My aerials broken!

2005-09-25 Thread DrNic

Hi
Thanks to my lovely little 2 year daughter, I now have a broken aerial
(Wi-Fi!) on the back of my SB1!!
It still works (slightly lower signal strength as its too poorly to
stand upright now) but of course it would be nice to have a healthy one
again!!
Does anyone know where I can source a *black* Wi-Fi aerial from with
the same gain/spec as the SlimDevices one?
Or do the Slim boys have any spares for me?

Thanks

Not to take any wind from Ultra's sails (no pun intended) - The Infrant

needed something sooner than was coming from Ultra, and the Infrant fit

Perhaps I should have added that I am in the UK. Looking at the Slim

Can anyone duplicate or confirm this issue for me. I have a Squeeze Box

[slim] 6pin - 4pin Firewire/1394 cable???

2005-09-25 Thread oli

Hi all

Looking to bolster the meagre (40gb) storage on my Dell Inspiron 5150
in preparation for an SB2, and the Maxtor One Touch II 300gb external
USB/Firewire looks good. However, both my USB ports are already in use,
so I'd like to use my 1394 port. I think it is a 4 pin input (how can I
verify this?) but the cable supplied with the Maxtor is a 6pin to 6
pin. If it turns out that my 1394 port is indeed a 4pin, could I use a
6pin to 4pin cable from the Maxtor, or would this not work/adversely
affect performance?

Cheers!

2005-09-25 Thread Michaelwagner

I never knew this before, but it seems to be true that at least some
hospitals run on 207V. I found mention of it in several articles after
searching in Google. Hospitals have special designated outlets in each
room, coloured differently, that survive power failures.

About the only clue I could find is that 207V is 10% down (acceptable
lower limit for voltage drift) from 230V.

Maybe something about the emergency power supplies?

2005-09-25 Thread DrNic

Don't worry about it too much!
Laptops generally have the smaller (4 pin) firewire ports, whereas
desktops and add on cards have the 6 pin jobbies!
AFAIK the 4 pin connectors can't/don't supply power to the device (ie
your iPod wouldn't charge) but that won't be an issue for the hard
drive as it has its own power. There isn't a difference in data
throughput.

Most larger businesses run higher 240 voltages, because they use
3-phase power. 3-phase is far more efficient for large amperage

is a no-brainer for generator motors, due to the 3 poles on such

I'm no longer working with electrical engineers all the time, but
I think MrC has the concept right, but the numbers wrong. Or I could
be wrong.

I think 240v is standard one phase, two leg power, which most of the US
has in their house. Common 120v is one leg, to ground. Dryers
and air conditioners use both legs and see 240v.

208v is three phase. And it is way more efficient for motors, etc.
Some industrial/commercial lighting is 177v because that is
what you get when you tie two of the three phase legs
together.

Hospitals also use lots of 120v circuits with special and
expensive outlets. The key is that they are designed to
avoid sparks, which is important since oxygen is everywhere
in most hospitals and other explosive gasses (used for
anesthesia, etc.) are also common.

Audiophiles buy the hospital grade outlets to improve the
sound of their systems. Some audiophile vendors take
normal $30 hospital outlets and put them in nice boxes
and sell them for $100. Nice mark up.

[slim] Re: Displaying album artwork only partially works

2005-09-25 Thread DrNic

Nico
Did you ever get to the bottome of this?? Is it working properly for
you now?
I'm ashamed to admit it, but on my slimserver (ah hem - 5.3.1!) I have
exactly the same problem!
Embedded artwork *and* cover.jpg files in the folder of MP3's are
displayed, but cover.jpg in FLAC folders do not show up...

I know that general consensus (almost knee jerk?!) would be to upgrade
to the latest server version, but before changing what essentially is
not broken (excepting my artwork problem!) I want to know if this is
rectified in the latest versions.

Thanks
Nic

nico Wrote:
 Hi,

I've started adding album artwork to my music DB but have run into a
problem with the Browse By Artwork feature (in both Default and
 Fishbone skins).

In my collection I have about 30 MP3 tracks, each which have artwork
embedded as a ID3 tag. Then I have about 30k FLAC tracks. The artwork
to each of these albums is in a single folder:
 artfolder = /terrabyte1/ro/images/slimdevices

I have specified variable filename patterns:
 Artwork: %ALBUM_ARTIST_full.jpg
 Artwork Thumbnail: %ALBUM_ARTIST_thmb.jpg

 Look For Artwork is enabled.

The problem is that when I Browse By Artwork, I only see thumbnails for
the artwork embedded in the MP3 files. None of the FLAC artwork shows
up. I have rescanned the lib from scratch several times.

The curious thing about this is that both full-size and thumbnail
artwork for my FLAC files DOES show up in the Default Fishbone skins
when I am browsing via alternate methods. For example, if I Browse By
Album and choose a flac album that has artwork, the full 300x300 image
will show up in the browse panel. Then if I click on the album to play
it, the smaller 100x100 thumbnail will appear in the player panel.
Turning on d_artwork confirms the pathnames for the full thmb jpegs
 are being found and loaded.

Anyone have any idea why Browse By Artwork is only displaying the
artwork embedded in my MP3 files?

 TIA,
 Nico

[slim] Re: Squeezebox firmware update using Sony remote

2005-09-25 Thread Dave Edwards

Just to let everyone know - I have managed to get the firmware upgrade
procedure to work with a Pronto learning remote.

I was originally using the JVC code for brightness and this did not
trigger the firmware upgrade.

I have now programmed a new button with the learned code for
brightness from the original Slim remote.

If I hold this new button down for a few seconds, then the firmware
update process kicks in. Interestingly, the update does not happen when
a macro is set up to repeat the button a number of times - I'm not sure
why. Anyway, at least this proves that the upgrade can be performed
from the Pronto.

For those that are interested, the IR code used is 900D 006D 0002
6E91 20DF 6E91 20DF.

Now I can finally put away the Slim remote and never have to hunt for
it every time I need to update the firmware :)

[slim] KCRW simulcast change

2005-09-25 Thread Michael Amster
Looks like the KCRW simulcast feed in the SlimDevices picks may be
pointing to an old URL. I think the new one is:

File1=http://64.236.34.97:80/stream/1046
Length1=-1
File2=http://64.236.34.67:80/stream/1046
Length2=-1
File3=http://64.236.34.4:80/stream/1046

File4=http://64.236.34.196:80/stream/1046

Re: [slim] Buffered commands driving me crazy

I like my SB2, but sometimes I find that I start pushing buttons on the
remote to navigate the SB2 menus, and nothing happens. Then 10-15
seconds later, all the navigation I did starts suddenly happening in
rapid succession. Has this been noticed/reported?

A similar thing happens on my box (SB1), but is also associated with
spikes of CPU useage going to 100% by slimserver. This occurs as regular
as clockwork about every minute.

See my post in the beta newsgroup below.
Could this be the same problem as you have. Any similarities in our setup?

Using latest nightly 23/9, mandrake linux, pentium 3 1ghz, musicmagic, SB1

Around every one minute slimserver takes up 100% of my processor useage
making the server unuseable for interactive tasks for a few seconds.
Music or scrolling on my SB1 is not affected. This occurs again about a
minute after CPU useage returns to normal.

Any idea what even can be occurring around about every minute?

This occurs with or without the web interface open and with or without
the SB1 playing or not (or even switched off).

I cant think of anything special other than music magic.

This problem seemed to start occurring in a nighlty around abotu 2 weeks
ago.

Any ideas?

There are other tasks that run on the minutes too I think.Ben
