Multitask computing list them, but say they're unavailable if you try
 to order.

Alas, the version 3 is just the wrong shape to go where I want to put
 it.

 I'll start watching Ebay...

I can only congratulate Slimdevices on what must be a popular product
as demand seems to exceed supply - unless it's just a uk distribution
 problem.

Slim devices have created an excellent product but their distributions
leaves a lot to be desired if you ask me. I've been trying to buy a SB2
for the best part of as month. I'm considering giving up.
As for the SB3, I find it odd that production of the SB2 has stopped. I
could understand if the SB3 had major new features but really the only
difference is cosmetic. I'd question the logic in changing the design
of a very popular product within a year of its release. The cost of
manufacturing a new design must have been significant. I think the SB3
is ok but not worth an extra £50. Could it be that SD are just jumping
on the band wagon of exploitation of its most loyal customers?

[slim] Re: no more SB2 in the UK?

2005-11-27 Thread Fifer

It's a little unfair to suggest that the distribution channel is
inadequate because you cannot source what is now a superseded product.
It may be more reasonable to question why the SB3 was introduced so
quickly after the SB2, although the obvious answer would be to address
the common criticism that the SB1 and 2 looked like radio alarms and
out of place with the look of most A/V equipment. I'm not aware that
there are any significant issues with distribution of the current
product line other than that demand for black outpaced supply at
launch, but that's not really a distribution issue.

I've bought two SD products from what was at the time the current
product range and found no difficulty in sourcing them. I don't
anticipate any problem when I eventually succumb and buy an SB3. I
suspect I might be chapping though, if I decided I wanted an SB2 but
I'd probably find myself in a similar situation if I wanted to buy a
superseded Sony product too.

EDIT: The majority of the differences between the SB2 and SB3 are
cosmetic, but not all. The PSU has been redesigned and all antennae are
internal now. A function button (can't remember what now) has been added
to the remote control too. There might be more, but I don't recall right
now.

Are SD exploiting their most loyal customers? I doubt you'd get much
support for that statement around here. The new model launched a year
after the first and retails at the same launch price. That doesn't
strike me as exploitation.

I presume you're talking $ because Slim obviously has no say how much
the box sells for from anyone other than them. The prices of the SB2
went down $50 just before SB3 launch if I remember correctly. That is
the SB3 is the same price the SB2 used to be.

[slim] Re: no more SB2 in the UK?

2005-11-27 Thread Orb

Well, I see SB2 going for around £130 and SB3 going for around £180. £50
for a new design. The psu/antenna improvements mean nothing to me and
certainly not £50.

I take your point about the SB2 looking like an alarm clock but my
point is, why introduce a product that is extremely popular and within
less than a year completely change its look and stop manufacturing the
old design?
I find it an odd decision. It must cost a lot of investment to do this
and I could understand it if the SB3 was a major hardware improvement
on the SB2 but as it stands it isn't.

My comment about exploitation may have been rather harsh but judging
from many people around here who will buy anything SD put out, it seems
to me SD knew this.
I just find it odd thats all. I wouldn't have expected the SB3 to be
out until next year, maybe late summer fall next year. I would have
thought the SB3 would be massively upgraded from the SB2. I guess this
is now the domain of the SB4.

I still stand by my comment about distribution and will do until I can
buy a SB from somewhere like Amazon. SB is an amazing product but most
people have never heard of it. Shit, just about every one for sale on
ebay comes with the selling point 'rare item'.
And you'd feel my frustration if you have been trying to buy a SB2 for
the last month only to be told, we don't ship here, we don't ship
there, we will ship to you but the shipping is going to cost the price
of a grand piano, we don't have them in stock but you can have the new
one that looks more like a playstation for an extra £50.

As a consumer, I'm not interested in excuses. I just want to go to
Amazon.co.uk, pay my money and have the item here within 48 hours.
Simple as that.

I think you are looking a little too short term. The price
of every SqueezeBox has come out at about the same price.
Over time, the price is cut, and typically there is a price cut
to clear out stock before the next cooler one comes out.

The SB1/G came out at the same price as the SB1, with cool new features.
The SB2 came out at the same price as the SB1 and SB1/G with tons
of cool new features. The SB3 looks like a real piece of stereo
and has come minor new features at the same price as the SB1, SB1/G and
SB2.

This is exactly what most of the electronics vendors do. Intel and AMD
are the most obvious examples, Their top product always costs $1000,
and over a few years, it costs $50, as several generations of
cooler faster things are released.

I personally don't prefer the SB3 over the SB2. My main SqueezeBox
is behind a glass door and you can't see anything but the display.
But the space in my cabinet is limited. Being taller is bad for me.
I'm looking for a Low Rider SqueezeBox before I buy another.

The definition of price is what a seller under no compunction
to sell will offer it to a buyer with no compunction to buy.
Once it gets up to 300 quid, Sean will start issuing the golden
commemorative edition

If ultra is smart enough to control a collectible, cool.
The folks with boxes of NOS (new old stock) tubes
(valves to you brits) are making a fortune to audiophiles.

:) We didn't pay any less for these than we used to pay pre-SB3 so why
should we sell them for less. People still want them over the SB3 so if
you want one you know the price. We only have about 5 of each now
anyway.
