Re: [DNG] Which desktop manager?
Quoting Stephane Ascoet via Dng (dng@lists.dyne.org): > Dear Rick, I'm not sure that such a deprecated Website is a good > advice. And I3, that a lot of geeks find to be the best actual WM, > isn't on it. I do _not_ at all agree that xwinman.org should be deemed 'deprecated'. It's easily the best of its type, and has for long decades been highly valuable for giving a representative cross-section of what various windows managers and DEs tend to look like _and_ also a fairly reasonable explanation of what those things are and how they differ -- documenting these things for 112 window managers and 20 DEs. If you would like to convince me it should be regarded as 'deprecated', the first step you should logically take is to suggest a superior replacement. Or replicate Matt Chapman's work elsewhere and do better -- which I notice neither you nor anyone else is volunteering to do. (One egrettable aspect of Matt's site is that his copyright notice implies proprietary terms for the site contents, and doesn't authorise site forks. IMO, we of the open source community need to keep remembering our hard-earned lessons about that.) At the same time it's true thatt any given time, there are plenty of window managers that are sadly omitted from the roster, and that is indeed disappointing. At one point a few years ago, I tried to get a response from Matt about why he hadn't merged in a new draft page I submitted, to add coverage about a WM. I didn't hear back. I may soon double back and try again. ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

For many years I had been loyal to LXDE, doing customized installations based on lxde-core on top of a minimal base install. It was the most lightweight DE known to me (and I don't like XFCE's "comic sans" feeling, nor thunar). So it was clear that I'd try LXQt quite soon - not only as LXDE's successor, but also as an expression of my pleasure in the merging of two interesting projects (LXDE and Razor-qt) in times of "forks everywhere". As Viverna, I chose to stay with openbox, which had been the LXDE (as well as ascii LXqt) default - with beowulf, LXqt has changed its default to xfwm4. libre Grüße, Florian -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iQIzBAEBCgAdFiEELAr/aHjRNwfZVZJo7kVJef5EH9YFAl5XAcQACgkQ7kVJef5E H9Yp2w/+Kw+xWkcfNGJmPJm3qhkCwEJWzsWT65VAanmqobmR31P2PncnJxnxt8WM v+YmFoWeUHh7BtGUC4OMtudhQSi0YOz3XP9MnO+10Mg7ZQTv3j/cEfJvNjlT4cjW 8SFnfMSD+FDWPNluV2APZNXTds52thkweIpugbcE9N0NkFJfKrYAKgv/wI+3vMGD kNXGq3F+S+JzWPgK+u4QRb4+bvRi7GKB5sbU1hEBlLhMesdql3jSBOMmlCOR8cxR Gqcfl6wmLA77jVheIEvSvlUmbk4bAihwYQe5L4a8ogbYOil14MeEES+HXXL2k2hk cqUYrSib2+pDBfkOz1D1zK4JZvEwN+tYuN05Z2C6HuzCdp9oM4ZCaEht0EghiVaq 5zZYqv5XYdQNRYjgyyrbt0KcNNWbQ5p4xhasMkMy/oJNcyHju/nUOcyGJAUMel19 bj/NGKYpewBcp8vAwvpzR58bQAU+IdkrBJF3BQm48IiaZj471QAwkjjphnMzJBX4 pdai/T1ypLtB7WdJvX9g1Fw3TDDYylPKUCk/VHB7Y1SClSWIA/Osxl2wwTGHG05w CN6abVoPAlZ2DH/TqTptRCNGfC3b6jvBJAKjo+m//yYWBSrvqKgt9o4XcpT/ZMPz HQtPA2JRINkJ1Qd5UeTdmys3LkiiUlhmriGU5jt8Eh5HO40bCYQ= =8wy8 -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

MATE with Openbox is a lighter possibility too.. i've been changing DEs, DMs regurarly, but always find myself going back to MATE. (lately i've tried enlightement... works well - a bit buggy) most DEs are either buggy or feautureless. (will NOT try GNOME/KDE, i kinda of think of those as systemd-like DEs, bloated to the bone.). other than that, i'd say MATE covers most needed desktop features, and XFCE comes shortly after.. LXDE is not abandoned, but it's missing stuff that you have to get from other DEs (=download extra libs, packages..), same as LXQT which is very interesting.. Trinity was very buggy last 2 times i tried it, completely unusable for me.. (even though my first ever DE was kde3 and i wanted it to work for old times sake... :D ) back to MATE, it now (versions > 1.24) offers official no-systemd support for mate-session, so it's certainly a positive attitude, other modern DEs lack.. just 2c, d. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

Hello terryc, When editing a file, try ``` :syntax off ``` Check your .vimrc for the same switch. If it is not what you are referring to, then I don't know. All I want or need vi for is a simple black text on white(grey actually) editor. I have no problem configuring that for xterms. Hi, you don't give a lot of details about the issue but is simple way to deactivate any color management in Vim is to set syntax to off in one of your vimrc files. You can do it interactively too with ":syntax off", without the quotes but after a escape key press -- Sincerely, Stephane Ascoet ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng
