Re: [DX-NEWS] XU7ABN

2008-12-21 Thread Dino Papas
Mark -- I was apprehensive about the prospect of getting Claude's QSL
based on several comments I'd seen on the DX discussion boards.
After finally working him in late Sep 08 I decided to send my card to
him via international registered mail, return receipt requested as
that had worked well getting a card out of Moldova under similar
circumstances.

Good news is that my card arrived from Claude a week or two ago,
coincidentally the return receipt card arrived the same day (stamped
2 Dec)! Regardless, Claude was very gracious in returning the card.

I THINK that the registered mail route is what made the difference.
Although, I was surprised to find that the USPS system could only
track my letter to their San Francisco facility. After trying to
track it further I called the 800 number and was told that once it
left U.S. hands it was up to the country of receipt to take
responsibility for the mail (I guess as one might expect). The USPS
rep took my info and told me that they would make an inquiry with
Cambodia and that they had 60 days in which to respond and the USPS
would then inform me in writing of the results -- interesting that I
have yet to hear from USPS!

Sorry for the long diatribe but thought my experience might help
others who have been trying to get a card from Claude.

Cost of my mailing about $14; having XU7ABN RTTY card in hand --
priceless!

Good Hunting!

73 -- Dino KL0S

Re: [DX-NEWS] XU7ABN

2008-12-21 Thread Gerry Hohn

Mark,

Claude has pretty clear directions on QRZ.com. Mail theft is a good likelihood.
I use the following rules to stealth mail to some DX.

- #9 SAE return inside # 10 mailer.
- Business return address on the mailer (make one up)
- No Calls anywhere on the mailer
- No special stamps. Simple ones or metered postage.
- In some cases, I've printed a card on letter sized paper to hide that it was
a card.

2009 CQ WPX CONTEST (Rule Changes). Randy Thompson, K5ZD, Director of
the CQ WPX Contest, announced that the rules for the 2009 CQ WPX Contest
are now available. See:http://www.cqwpx.com/rules.htm
There are changes throughout the rules, so participants are encouraged to
read the complete rules carefully. Many of the changes were to align with
similar rules in the CQ WW Contest or to clarify administrative details.
There is no change to the scoring. Most of the changes are administrative
and should have little impact on the competitive and fun aspects of the
contest. They look forward to more sunspots and another record year of
participation in the 2009 WPX contests. Look for CQ WPX 2008 Contest
results in the January (SSB) and March (CW) issues of CQ Magazine.

4A, MEXICO (Special Event). Members of the DXXE (Mexican Contest and DX
group) will celebrate their 4th anniversary by using the special callsign
4A1DXXE between December 25th and January 6th (2009). Activity will be
on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via N7RO and the LoTW. QSOs
with this station are good for the DXXE Award. For more information,
visit the DXXE Web page at:http://www.dxxe.org

5H, TANZANIA (IOTA Op). Sigi/DL7DF and his XYL Sabine will be on holiday
in Zanzibar (AF-032), February 3-13th. Look for Sigi to sign 5H1DF and
be active on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY and SSTV as often as
possible. His equipment consists of a transceiver, a linear TY900, a 18m
Lowband Vertical, a Vertical R7, as well as a laptop computer. QSL via
DL7DF, by the German QSL Bureau (DARC) or direct to: Sigi Presch,
Wilhelmsmuehlenweg 123, D-12621 Berlin, Germany. For updates and more
details, visit:http://www.dl7df.com/5h/index.html

7P, LESOTHO. Danny, ZS6AW, is expected to be active as 7P8AA this week
between December 24-27th. His main activity will be on 20 meters SSB.
QSL via his home callsign.

9M2, WEST MALAYSIA. Dani, EA4ATI, informed OPDX that he is working now in
Malaysia. He has been issued the callsign 9M2TI and will be operating
from Kuala Lumpur city. Using a vertical antenna with 400 watts, look
for Dani to be active on 40/20/15/10 meters using CW and SSB. He also
mentions that he will participate in the main international contests
(like the CQ WPX) from a different location with a better station (yagi
antennas and also dipole for 80m). Dani will stay in Malaysia for at
least one year. QSL via his home callsign.

ASIAN TRIP (Update). By the time you read this Frank, I2DMI, should be
active from Thimphu, Bhutan, as A52RY

[DX-NEWS] ADIF to CQ DX Marathon

2008-12-21 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
The CQ DX Marathon is an annual recognition issued by CQ Magazine. It
is the sum total of the number of different entities, plus the number
of CQ zones, worked in a given year.

This conversion program reads an ADIF log and writes a comma-delimited
spreadsheet that can be copied/pasted into the official CQ
Scoresheet.
