Re: [Elecraft] Keyers

2009-04-20 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dave,

Both the K1EL WinKey and K12 keyers support Ultimatic mode.
If you don't need the computer/logging link that WinKey offers, I
suggest you try the K12, it is inexpensive and does the job.

[Elecraft] K3: Best AGC settings for QRN?

2009-04-20 Thread Steve Ellington
I enjoy rag chewing on 80 CW during the evenings, even during summertime
conditions. I've been experimenting with various AGC settings. Tonight I had
a QSO with a fellow who was S9 but QRN was hitting 20db over that.
Here's what I'm using.
AGC DCY...Soft
AGC HLD...0
AGC PLS ...nor
AGC SLP..003
AGC THR...008
AGC - F...120
The AGC F adjustment seems to have little or no effect. Something has
changed because this used to really make an obvious difference.
AGC Soft vs. Nor doesn't seem to do much. When it was first introduced
it did too much but now it's rather difficult to tell a difference. BTW, I
usually end up using the 400 HZ filter. It seems to offer the best
compromise for QRN.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would be interested in peoples experience with the K1EL keyer. I am
interested in Ultimatic. I have not learned to use an Iambic mode,
but I am getting to the point where it can make a difference in
sending. I am seriously thinking about picking up a K1EL, but I know
Ultimatic is on the list for K3 somewhere down the road. So I have
been dragging my feet. Maybe some impressive stories will help me
pony up the money and dig out the soldering iron. I really do need to

Re: [Elecraft] Keyers

2009-04-20 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello:

I'd also put my vote in for WinKeyUSB. I purchased it primarily for Field
Day and N1MM last year. It was supposed to be a backup, but we ended up
using it the entire time.

The kit was easy to put together and has worked very well for me for nearly
a year. The price is right and it interfaces easily with N1MM. All you need
to set is a couple of N1MM check boxes. Yes, there are more options, but we
didn't seem to need them.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyers

2009-04-20 Thread Erik N Basilier
I have had my K1EL Winkeyer USB for a while now.
It is the first keyer I have had which can be set to Ultimatic, and I find I
make fewer mistakes in that mode. A plus over the K3 built-in keyer.
Its computer interfacing is a big plus too.
On the other hand, the speed pot leaves me guessing as to what the actual
speed is, while the K3 keyer very conveniently displays the speed.
(When the Winkeyer speed is set from N1MM, the speed is clearly displayed on
the computer.)
Finally, my Winkeyer came from a batch of 500 where the front panel
silkscreen was off, so that the "SPEED" label is partly hidden behind the
speed knob.

[Elecraft] CW and VOX

2009-04-20 Thread John Gaynard
Yesterday, suddenly my K3 had no RF output on CW. It had been a few days
since I was on so I was kind of mystified since it worked fine last week.
The TX light was flashing, and I could hear the TX relay in the PW-1 amp
clicking. In desperation, I went to SSB mode and there was full output
power when I spoke into the MIC since obviously VOX was on in SSB mode.. I
did not consciously notice the VOX missing on the display in CW mode. I
went back to CW, and then I noticed the VOX was not displaying. I never
consciously turn off VOX but obviously I held the Band switch a bit too long
and turned off VOX during a band switch last week. I never use the QSK
option. So I experimented a little bit. I turned on VOX and QSK then I
turned off VOX, then turned off QSK, and SEMI appeared in the VFO B display
briefly for about a second. I keyed the K3 and the TX light flashed and no
RF output. Am I correct in thinking that you cannot be/should not be in
SEMI mode unless VOX is turned on. I am on firmware level 2.38. Without
VOX or QSK turned on, you should not be able to put the rig in transmit mode
by touching the key. I generally glace at the new firmware releases to see
if there are any relevant fixes I'm interested in. If not, I just choose
not to upgrade firmware. The funny thing was that I did remember to make
sure I was not in TEST mode since that essentially does the same thing.
Essentially, if VOX is off, QSK is off, and you are in CW mode, you are in
TEST mode by default. Has this been fixed in a subsequent firmware release.
It can be disconcerting to suddenly turn on the K3, get ready to chase a DX
station, only to find you have no RF output, but everything looks normal.
If in TEST mode, at least the TX symbol flashes.

I like the "Edit CW Memories" feature in the new K3 Utility.

If I understand the Help file correctly, a vertical line character
at the end of a memory entry will force the K3 to immediately
stop transmitting, thus bypassing any CW Delay selected by
the front panel knob.

However, I just tried it and it doesn't seem to work that way.
The vertical line character seems to be simply ignored.
What am I missing here?

Make sure that you're in AFSK or PSK A modes, not SSB. Then make sure that
you actually DID turn up the line input (MIC) level in THAT mode, it changes

[Elecraft] OT: FS Fluke 8842A DMM with Original Manual

2009-04-20 Thread Howard W. Ashcraft
The Fluke is a professional grade 5.5 digit DMM with regular and four wire
measurement capabilities. It saw me through a K2/100 build, a KX1 build, and
many other projects. It is is very nice shape and fully operational. Its last
full calibration was in November of 2005 lapsing in 2006. I haven't seen the
need for a formal recalibration, as it comares accurately to my other dmms and
standards. It comes complete with power cord, a good set of test leads, and
the original manual (user and service).

You can scan the internet to get the complete specifications on the 8842A,
which is the top of the 8000 line. However, there are a few reasons why I like
it. 1) it is a very solidly built, reliable unit; 2) it has a low noise front
end and uses thin film resistor networks (first in this series to do so); 3)
the controls are straight forward and logical; 4) measurements are held; and 5)
it has a bright electrofluorescent display. It uses Fluke's true rms
technology.

The last two points really add to usability. You can't always be looking at
the DMM when you are looking into the work and placing the leads. Here, it
will hold the reading after you remove the leads. You can zero it by touching
the leads together or just take another reading. The electrofluorescent
display is much, much easier to read than LCD displays (you can read an ef
display across the room in full light) and easier on the eyes than the a red
led display.

As of this morning (April 19) the least expensive 8842A on eBay is being sold
for $299, buy it now. It does not come with a manual, but Tucker is selling
the manual separately for $50. There are others, admittedly with the GPIB*
option, that are being offered for as high as $499. I am asking $185 plus
actual shipping for the dmm, probes, cord and manual.

Howard W. Ashcraft, Jr. W1WF
K3/100
*The GPIB option is not very useful outside of automated testing and mass
production.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Edit CW Memories

2009-04-20 Thread Greg - AB7R
This is correct. The prosign is only used in conjunction with FSK-D and PSK-D
programed memories to truncate the 4-sec trailing delay. It has no effect on
playback of CW memories.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Edit CW Memories

2009-04-20 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

The vertical bar (!) character replaces the IM (..--) character that
would be input using the CW paddles.
It serves no purpose in CW, but ends the transmission without the
software 4 second delay for data modes.

The K3Utility help file specifically states "immediately terminate a
*data* mode transmission"
It does not apply to CW, and has no relationship with the front panel
DELAY control.

The vertical line character seems to be simply ignored.
What am I missing here?

The prosign IM (| on a computer keyboard above \ or in CW "di-di-dah-dah")
was originally added for RTTY memories to truncate the 4 second RTTY diddle
at the end of messages. Prior to the K3 Utility change, the only way to
enter the IM prosign was via a CW paddle input.

I could be wrong but I don't believe the prosign IM serves any function in
CW mode and is simply ignored (as you stated).

Michael,

Yes, that KAT2 firmware will work fine in your K2 with 2.04/1.09
firmware/KIOC.

I am confused about the KSB2 - the latest KSB2 firmware is 1.08 which
added a 0.2 second delay for VOX, and 1.07 added support for the changes

That's excellent advice from Gary! With #1361 I was failing the TX

problem he describes (looking from the component side of the board).
I took an X-Acto knife, scraped the toroid leads to expose bare wire
and resoldered from the component side, which fixed the problem.

I would look for an intermittent solder joint in the 40/60m section of the

resoldering all joints in that section.

[Elecraft] Hunting K3 subRX gremlins

2009-04-20 Thread Gary Hinson

Dear Elecrafties,

Does anyone have any idea why my subRX might be intermittent on 40m?

Sometimes, for no obvious reason, all I get is hiss in my right ear, no
sigs. As far as I have noticed so far, it only happens on 40m. I don't
think it's the subRX attentuator/preamp, antenna, RF gain or filter
settings. On Thursday when I first noticed it, I re-calibrated the subRX
synth (among other things) and the gremlins went back into hiding, but not
for long: this afternoon, the gremlins returned. Earlier this evening I
tried various things such as power-cycling the rig, meddling with the subRX
settings, changing bands and then returning to 40, but still just hiss.
Tonight after dinner, I returned to the rig (still powered up) and the
gremlins have crept back into hiding: the subRX is working again on 40 but I
fear they're just teasing me now.

Any clues about where to hunt first after "... 98, 99, 100 coming ready or
not!"?

PS Also, is the subRX meant to work cross-band with the current/latest
firmware? CONFIG: VFO IND won't budge from "no" (it just says "UNAVAIL"
when I try to change it).

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Fun times on 20m SSB tonight

2009-04-20 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hello Mike,

Here I use a Heil ProSet Plus headset which has the HC-4 and HC-5 mike
elements, although I do not use the HC-4 "DX" element with my K2/100 #3255
which does not contain any of the "official" mods. I do not use any external
mic preamp with this K2/100 because one is not required, i.e.100 watts pep
output is delivered on all bands without an external mic preamp.

SSBA and SSBC are both set to 3, but I do not use VOX. When using the K2/100
I try to avoid heavy ALC action, just a flicker of one bar, too much ALC
might result in "buckshot" splatter.

Because most of my operating involves DX, mostly on 40m and 15m, the nominal
bandwidth of the SSB transmit crystal filter in my K2 and other rigs is 2.1
kHz. If a DX's receiver bandwidth is set narrowish, I would suggest that
using a wider transmit bandwidth is not really desireable. I did modify my
K2's SSB2 filter to reduce its passband ripple, but the change in component
values could well be different in other K2's. I won't bore you with the
reasons for that.

I must admit that I set the PA bias while looking at the IMD products during
two tone tests, within the limits of allowed power dissipation of course.

Hope that this helps.
