[Elecraft] KX3 wattage

2019-06-29 Thread JP Douglas
Hi all!

While having a QSO yesterday from my mobile to a QRP station on 20 meters, the
gentleman I was chatting with mentioned that the KX3 now does up to 20 watts of
power. Never heard this before and wondering if it's true, currently my KX3
does up to 15 watts. I use my KX3 mostly for digital modes; winlink and fldigi
but do try voice w/it once in a while.

Thanks and 73 de Jose Douglas KB1TCD, Midcoast ME

[Elecraft] Pro Audio PS

2019-07-29 Thread JP Douglas
Hi all,

I have one as well for my KX3, I've even taken it with me on holidays to the
Caribbean were voltage is 240 volts, still plug and play, works on 120 or 240
volts. Excellent product though in the shack I run the KX3 on battery/solar
power.

Re: [Elecraft] (OT) Ca Fires

2019-11-04 Thread JP Douglas

I run a 12 volt Solar system, 4 100 watt panels hooked up to 4 6 volt Golf Cart
batteries. I have 12 volt LED lights (look like a regular lightbulb) all over
the QTH, run router, wifi, phone, shack all without an inverter. If you end up
losing the things in your fridge we’re talking what, $100, so what. We’re in
Maine so we have wood burning stove in the basement you can even cook with if
need be.
Loose power all the time, no big deal...

Re: [Elecraft] THE FUTURE OF OUR HOBBY

2019-12-15 Thread JP Douglas
How about, I refuse to have a cell phone! Imagine that, I can get away
without everybody trying to find me and the government can't track me
down. If my YL, KB1TCG, really wants to find me when I'm out  she can
cruise 20 or 40m and find me...

YL has a burner phone in case of emergencies w/daughters and grandson or
else she wouldn't have one either.

We refuse to play their games.

I go to private schools and do hands on ham radio demos (voice & digi)
to get youngsters interested as public schools only do as they are
told.  We had a Prep Fair in town last Oct and did live Winlink Peer 2
Peer on 20m, Electaft KX3 in our Hambulance in the car park and Kenwood
TS-480 at the event.

My youngest daughter, 31 and grandson, 7 are studying for their license.

Ham Radio lives on!

Merry Christmas everyone

A friend of mine had same issues a couple of years ago here in Maine, turned
out it was marijuana growers using non approved chinese grow lights brought in
illegally through Canada and being sold in Portland, ME.
We put an end to that, the FCC deputised my friend...even got in the Portland
newspaper.

75 amp AGM batteries still $140.00 on epay w/free shipping, I prefer them to
the 105 amp/hr batteries as they weigh a little less.
Use it w/50 watt Solar Panel and have done FD from start to finish with it as
long as weather cooperates.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Net on 75M

2020-06-01 Thread JP Douglas
Hi all,

I run a 75m Emergency Mgmt regional net Sundays at 21:00 UTC on 3.940 and The
Seagull net is active rest of the week here in ME same freq.
I find the band goes long shortly after the net is over, around 21:30.
Might want to not use 3.940 for a net...
I’d be willing to try Elecraft net anytime after 22:00 UTC.
BTW, around 20:30 UTC yesterday a friend (N1EP) was trying his Yaesu FT-817 @ 5
watts on 3.940 so I answered him w/my KX3 @ 15 watts. He was coming in 5.3 and
I was at 5.7. Distance was only 90 miles. Switched back to my Kenwood TS-830S
for the net as I am nervous running a net on 15 watts.

Re: [Elecraft] Smoke detectors

2020-10-25 Thread JP Douglas
About 12 years ago we had a carbon monoxide detector in the upstairs hallway
not far from the shack. Every time I was on a 2m net (could have been 6m, I
forget...)the detector would start chirping, I even lowered power from 65 to 25
watts, same issue. Eventually the thing wouldn’t stop chirping at all so we
threw it away, put a smoke detector in it’s place, got a 10 year carbon
monoxide detector and put it in the guest bedroom which is further away from
the shack and never had a problem again.

Re: [Elecraft] New antenna works!

2020-08-02 Thread JP Douglas
I prefer to use resonant antennas, either single or multi band and not use a
tuner, however, I have encountered that even resonant antennas are not always
so due to ground conditions,
Case in point, two weeks ago we hiked to the summit of Sentinel Mountain in
Baxter State Park. I carried my KX3, foldable 42 watt solar panel, 6amp/hr
lithium battery, coax and a 40 meter resonant slinky antenna which I had
previously tested at my QTH in Mid Coast, ME. Antenna would not resonate due to
the granite terrain. Luckily I brought with me a mAT-10 qrp tuner I had just
purchased and was able to get on the air just fine. Tried to post pix earlier
but file was too big for the reflector. I’ll gladly send it to antone that
wants to see it.
Stay Free everyone!

Re: [Elecraft] Peaks, parks, and prayers: CW & SSB islands in a digital sea

You can get a brand new Dell Win 10 solid drive laptop for $150 that also lets
you use winlink, not much memory but if you are only using it for ham
applications it works fine, that’s what I use as a dedicated ham laptop.

Re: [Elecraft] Using CM-500 with Elecraft Rigs

2020-11-09 Thread JP Douglas
I use the CM-500 w/my Yaesu FT-897D as well as with my Kenwood TS-480SAT
with no "power adder", works fine.

provide bias to their own line of electret mics, so you could have been a
little more specific and said "for non-OEM mics". We can't tell what you
are thinking when you type.

Read *ALL* of what I wrote. I indicated that the power is on pin 2
(Kenwood) or 5 (Yaesu/Ten-Tec) but one had to add a 5K6 Ohm resistor
and 1 uF blocking capacitor in order to use an electret mic. Those
manufacturers do not provide "automatic" operation with the CM500
or other electret mics.

NOT SO, DICK TRACY. All three manufacturers provide 5-10v bias
voltage on either Pin 2 or Pin 5, respectively - (and have done so for
many years.)

Elecraft did operators a HUGE FAVOR by switching bias voltage ON and
OFF with a MENU setting, adding an bonus measure of flexibility (...
which is NOT to be corn-fused with any sort of Flex-able Radio! ...
after all, this is CHAOS and we don't do that here ... ) ;-) Elecraft
earned bonus points for providing BOTH an 8-pin Foster jack AND a pair
of 3.5 mm TRS jacks to accommodate all sorts of microphones and headsets
without a middle-man adapter on its larger models - way ahead of the
field. / K8JHR /

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Broken boom mic attachment on a CM-500

From my experience, some of the CM-500s have an electret mic and others a
dynamic mic. I don’t know if its an age factor.
I use mine with my YAESU FT-897 and with my Kenwood TS-480, don’t have the
adapter at this point to use with the KX3...Pretty good for an in-expensive
boom mic.
