I've started getting some strange Outbound messages to Postmaster. Please
take a look. It appears that these messages are originating from the inside
but I am not sure how to track down their source. Any suggestions?

You're being spammed by the looks of things, unless you are intentionally
sending out emails with the subject lines you are describing below. You need
to turn relaying off or configure it correctly.

RFC821
then it must construct an undeliverable mail notification message and

This would seem to indicate relaying? However, I have my system setup to

Maybe this link may help... http://www.slipstick.com/exs/relay.htm
I seems like u need to stop anonymous relay.! Do u route incoming
smtp mail..? If so impliment proper routing
restictions.. To check the anonymous realy, from an outside source
telnet to mailserver:23(better yet use ssh)
once connected try to send a mail message with a bogus mail from
source and if it lets u send then anonymous relay is enabled.
If anonymous relay is disabled it will display propmt like anonymous
relaying denied..

just some thoughts..

RE: Strange Outbound Messages (Postmaster)

2001-11-16 Thread East, Bill

Sorry Mr. Joyce, I don't agree. Commercial email (unsolicited or not) is
coming into his domain, but he is not relaying. Instead, the spammers are
sending to invalid addresses within his domain and using invalid (or
unresolvable) return addresses.

So: 1) Spam comes in.
2) Exchange tries to bounce an NDR back to the return address.
3) The attempt fails after repeated attempts.
4) Exchange generates the message showing that the NDR could not be
delivered to the return address in the message.

Of course, you could try to contact the senders, but why would they care?
Best thing to do is ignore the messages or blackhole the senders.

RFC821
then it must construct an undeliverable mail notification message
and
send it to the originator of the undeliverable mail (as indicated by
the
reverse-path).

This would seem to indicate relaying? However, I have my system
setup to
NOT relay. I've even tested (per the faq)? According to the
telnet test
I'm good-to-go? Am I missing something?

The source was generated by your server in response to a message that it
received from somwhere, with the Reply-To address of
[EMAIL PROTECTED], to which your server cannot complete delivery
of the NDR.

RE: Strange Outbound Messages (Postmaster)

2001-11-16 Thread Roger Seielstad

Doesn't indicate anything having to do with relaying.

Most likely, it was spam addressed to invalid addresses at your domain, and
the reply-to address is invalid as well.

 RFC821
then it must construct an undeliverable mail notification
 message and
send it to the originator of the undeliverable mail (as
 indicated by the
 reverse-path).

This would seem to indicate relaying? However, I have my
 system setup to
NOT relay. I've even tested (per the faq)? According to the
 telnet test
 I'm good-to-go? Am I missing something?

Subject: Strange Problem

Hi all,

I had a screw up yesterday whereby my Sys Admin rebooted the Exchange
server, just as my Outlook client was connecting ! It resulted in a corrupt
MTA and prevented me receiving email.

I created another mailbox for myself and copied all my data over from the
old one. That seemed to fix the problem as far as sending and receiving
went, although I still had a number of event records expressing MTA errors.
The error included my x400 address with a little squiggle at the end that
looked like a 'double s' - one on top of the other. Also, because I created
a new mailbox with a different name (and then renamed it) the 'directory'
element stayed as the temporary name.

I discovered throughout the day yesterday, that infact, any mail I sent
didn't get delivered (external - internal OK). First thing this morning, I
restored the mtadata folder from Monday night backup hoping this would
solve the problem. Although it restored successfully, today I can't send
email at all - it just sits in my outbox and nothing will shift it.

Any ideas - it's freaking me out !!

Thanks

Tim

RE: Strange Error

2001-09-26 Thread Bowles, John L.

These people are internal users that she's trying to send to. Also, I found
out that it's only 2 the two people that she's trying to send to that mail
gets bounced back. I take it she sent out an email to a distribution list
and someone else tried to Reply to All and the two same users bounced
back. I checked their mail limits and they are well below the limit. What
could be the problem here?

Thanks,

Classic...

She has her address for these people configured incorrectly. Make sure they
were created with (presuming) SMTP or Internet address format. I have had
people do this all the time.

If you really want to test her sending mail, then make sure she types the
address like... [EMAIL PROTECTED] and try it that way. I bet it works.

One of my users is getting this strange problem when trying to email certain
people. If I send email to this person he receives it just fine. But when
she sends it she receives this message. Any ideas? We are using Exchange

RE: Strange Error

2001-09-26 Thread Martin Blackstone

Is she sending an attachment with the message?
I have seen this error when sending attachments that are over the
receivers limit.
An example would be this is what you get when sending to large of an
attachment to @Home.
