[expert] can't start xfree86 3.3.5

1999-12-15 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi,

I just installed xfree86 3.3.5 via rpms. I used xf86config to
configure. Everything seemed to go fine. But then, when I did startx,
I got the error:

/usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper: can't resolve symbol '__xstat'
_X11TranSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno: = 111
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

X did not start up. So I went back to xfree86 3.3.3.3. I'm running
Mandrake 5.3 smp kernel 2.2.9. Why am I unable to run xfree86 3.3.5?
Thanks,

 Hi!

I updated my old kernel (2.2.5) to a new kernel (2.2.12). But I lost my
sound modules. As a matter of fact, in the make xconfig oe make
menuconfig it didn´t has the option to my soundcard. Just a few were
available. Then I copied the modules I needed from the old kernel and
ran insmod. It said that the kernel module was older then the actual
kernel. Then I ran insmod again if the -f option to force the older
modules but then it showed a message like ¨unknown..¨ and a lot of
numbers. Is there a new module for the new kernel? What did I wrong? Hoe
can I solve this problem? The same message appeared to me when I tried
to load the module epat.o which is necesary for the HP CD-R writer.
This module I took from my new kernel. I choosed it from the kernel
 configuration.
 Something wierd is happenind here

 Thank you!!

Hi, Felipe,

What kind of sound card do you have? When you ran 'make xconfig' for
the kernel configuration, did you choose support for OSS sound modules?
The Sound Blaster modules can be found in there. Good luck,

Sorry, my reply was in french, i must be tired :) Here is the

 Hi,

Default configuration of nfs server is to do "root squashing". It means
that the uid of root is squashed to nobody when root try to acces to a
nfs volume. If "nobody" is not allowed to access the volume, the server
will reply "permission is denied". You can disable this security by
 adding the no_root_squash parameter.

For more information, see man exports

Sorry again for my poor english.

Hi, Sylvain,

Thanks for the tip. The computer on which the tape drive is installed
is called ripley. I edited ripley's /etc/exports to include the line:

/dev/st0weaver(rw,root_no_squash)

so that weaver's root could access ripley's tape drive. I'm still
getting the permission denied error. Is this the right syntax for
root_no_squash? Thanks,

ideas? The mod I tried to install was eepro.o
 Thanks!

Hi, Jason,

We have two Linux machines running Mandrake 5.3 with Intel EtherExpress
Pro/100 cards. We installed these cards after recompiling a 2.2.9
kernel with EEPro100 support, which is actually a default setting in the
kernel config options. Then we used Network Configurator in the Control
Panel to configure the cards. Good luck,

Hi, Mauro,

Try

for the latest packages to upgrade to kernel 2.2. Good luck,

 or heard.

Make sure that the U2W *cable* you are using has built-in termination.
The terminator should look like a half-sized match box, usually
 colored black.

 Linux rulez, Windoze sucks.

Hi, Yusry and Gary,

Thanks for the tip. It was the cable. The system came with a regular
uw cable instead of a termnitaed u2w cable. I got the proper cable and
completed the installation. Thanks again!

[expert] installation on ibm dghs18v

1999-04-24 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi,

I'm trying to install Mandrake 5.3 on a new machine:

dual pii 350
512 mb ram
asus p2b-ds
18 gb ibm dghs18v u2w scsi

The 18 gb hard drive is the only hard drive on this
system. I've set the scsi id of the drive to 0, and
all of the scsi bios parameters look ok. This is the
only scsi device in the system, so I've set the
active termination jumper. The drive and its correct
scsi id are detected by bios at startup. During the
Mandrake installation, the on-board aic7890 scsi host
is detected, as is the hard drive. But then when I
try to partition the disk, the installation hangs.
When I tried fdisk, I got no prompt for partitioning
commands. Then I restarted the installation and
tried to use disk druid. I got the error message:

Bad Partition Table-
The partition table on device sda is corrupted. To
create new partitions it must be initialized, causing
the loss of all data on this drive.

Since there wasn't anything on the drive, I went
ahead and initialized. But now it's been hanging for
over twelve hours in "Setup filesystems". Is
it formatting the drive? I know it'll take some time
to format an 18 gb hard drive, but this does not seem
normal. Also, there are jumpers on this drive for active
termination and termination power enable. Should
both of these be shorted? Right now, I've only shorted
the active termination jumpers. Thanks for any suggestions,

Hidong
