 I know. Directory 6.1b contains this.There is now a new 6.1
directory on the mirrors in addition, which Axalon tells me is not yet
the real thing and changes often (so probably should be ignored).

Well, I don't know about the new 6.1 directory, but I base "release" not
on something sitting in an FTP site but on someone making some sort of
announcement (ie. "Mandrake 6.1 (Helios) is released on such and such a
date"). Since it has been announced like that and the homepage still
refers to Cassini as a beta pre-release, I'm going by that. shrug

There was a nice apology on Slashdot this morning saying no, Mandrake 6.1 was
not released, so refrain from slashdotting their servers until it's really out.

I said "6.1 (Helios) is already released and downloadable

Well, I'm sorry, but that seems to be a true statement. If you doubt
it, look up "released" in your favourite dictionary.

The new 6.1 directory is in addition to the 6.1b directory.

AND, once a thing is assigned a version number and released, it may NOT
be altered. So when you do the real release you will now have to call
it 6.1-n. The reason for all this rigorous control derives directly
out of support requirements.

OTOH, release logistics do require that the release must be available
on all the mirrors just before the formal release announcement is made.

Is there any chance that pcmcia installs will work in 6.1?

I only ask, because it has never worked in at least the last 6 months,
though I did manage to hack the pcmcia disk to get it to work.

Didn't work, nor does/did the one in cassini. I posted a detailed
report about the problem (and solution) here:

Actually, its not completely done.. If you check file tiimestamps, they are
updating it once a day..

Are you sure it's been *released*? It's been available on the FTP site as
a pre-release or beta (if you will) for some time now. In fact, Lorax,
RH's 6.1 is also available via ftp and is downloadable in many places...
It hasn't been released yet either, just made available for public testing
and feedback. There's a difference.

1.1.2 was due three weeks ago. It was put into cassini last week when the
tarballs were released to packagers. Have you seen a press release for 6.1
Yet? And why not, because it's not ready obviously. Yes release files were
changed, but you'll notice that there are still frequent file changes
going on, it was just something we needed out of the way. In the mean time
keep testing and fileing bug good bug reports and we'll keep doing our
thing. =cD

On Mon, 13 Sep 1999, you wrote:
I recently read a post from Gael, requesting that we stop bashing them
about the bug reports. Well unfortunately I cannot do that. Not until the
problem/problems get resolved. The developers have to understand that if
a product has bugs in it, that those bugs have to be answered and fixed
before going to the next release. I know I have come down hard before on
the lack of response from the Mandrake Team on getting things done and
answering questions, and yes the response has picked up somewhat. But
legitimate bugs are not getting answered.

Something must be done about this.

Theres a real easy way to fix it.. Get the source and compile it yourself.

Heres an even better question: Did you buy Mandrake or did you download it?
And when I say buy it, I dont mean from CheapBytes. Did you buy a support
agreement? People that buy genuine copies of Mandrake, or support agreements
obviously are going to get preferential treatment.. Sorry, thats how a business
works. Don't like it? You're more than welcome to go out and build your own
Linux distribution. I downloaded my copy of Mandrake 6 and I would never dream
of attacking these people the way you have in this forum..

Next question: If you think this is such a simple problem to fix, why dont you
help a little and fix it? And then, submit the fix to the developers?
Isn't that supposed to be what Linux is all about?? Everyone helping everyone
else to make Linux better??

Axalon, Gael, and the others don't have to monitor this list. I, personally am
grateful for their presence here.
