Re: [expert] Frontpage extensions
John, Can you lend a hand, please? Scott runs Apache under FreeBSD. I don't understand *serverspeak*. Scott is paraplegic so physical tinkering with the sys is not possible by him. I asked him if he would dump FP if there was a viable workaround. He said in a second if the solution was compatible and secure. As far as I understand SSI (not much) he does use CGI-bin. Scott is a terrific guy that works very hard to give clients the best possible service and still keep the server secure. Apparently, it is a neverending task. Anything information, or anything you have time to do will be deeply appreciated by me. Scott too. Thanks for your time and consideration, Pj

Tell him to switch to CGI counters. :-) As far as SSL (Secure Socket Layer), using SSL to upload a web page will NOT work with plain Apache. It *does* require FP. However, we get by just fine by letting users design in FP, and either use FP's built-in FTP client to upload or upload via a standalone FTP client. :-) John

Not sure I understand, John. M$ (plain vanilla) HTML worked okay before FP. I think I probably wrote what Scott said wrong. He said that SSI's, like counters, won't display properly in an FP page without the FP stuff in his server too. He runs Apache. FWIW, I noticed when I ftp'd to the new server it had 6-8 FP files in my account, which I happily deleted. FP is just one more reason to embrace Tux, imho. Re: [expert] Frontpage extensions
I asked my ISP why he added the FP to hhe server? Apparently the FP pages will look fine but with the extensions in the server, SSI's don't work. Re: [expert] Frontpage extensions
Get the frontpage extensions for Linux-Mandrake on http://coruscant.netrevolution.com/pub/AES/frontpage/ They work with Apache 1.3.12. [expert] Frontpage extensions
I have Apache 1.3.12 compiled on my MDK 6.1 server. I have been designing my webpages with Frontpage 2000. Do I have to install Frontpage extensions on this server in order for it to work or can I just ftp the files and directories over manually? Thanks in advance.
Re: [expert] Frontpage Extensions for Apache
One way is to get the person running the Apache server to open himself to the script kiddies of the world by running "Front Page Extensions" A second, less drastic measure is "Demoroniser", which is available through Tucows.linuxberg.com. That little program takes files written by Microsoft editors and corrects errors and HTML incompatibilities "to prevent you from looking dumber than a bag of dirt when your page is viewed by a non-Microsoft platform." Not perfect, by any means, but a step in the right direction. Pages made by almost any other editor run without anything special. Hippie is a good MS-platform editor that provides access to the HTML right beside WYSIWYG. CoffeeCup is available for both platforms and is a reasonable editor too. Oh, and rename the .htm file as .html. Check with the system admin, as well...may want you to change "default.htm" to "index.html." Most Apache servers look for index.html and don't know (by default, at least -- you can tell 'em to) look for default.htm. John

[expert] Frontpage Extensions for Apache
Does anyone know what is required so that you can use Frontpage 98 to develop pages for an Apache server. I need to be able to post my pages out of Frontpage onto a Apache server. Thanks in advance..
