The recognition of a flat-panel doesn't depend on Mdk8.2 per se, but
on X, what modules X is instructed to load, what video card you have,
and whether you monitor/card is EDID-capable.

I do LCD FP research and so I'm constantly plugging different LCD
monitors into my Mdk 8.2 system. (I currently have four on my desk!)

I run the new nvidia GeForce4 Titanium card (VisionTek) with dual
VGA/DVI-I outputs and the nvidia binary driver (which was needed 4
months ago to drive the digital DVI-I port). I have even hot-swapped
panels (not recommended!!) without a problem.

Well this is not strictly true. They certainly have a refresh rate
(60 Hz, mostly, even if they say something other than 60) and
horizontal and vertical sync rates. It is true that there is no
flying spot like a CRT but source and gate drivers (for TFT panels)
still need to be synchronised to something. For example the (experimental)
monitor I've got next to me at this moment says its H rate is 64kHz.

There are many many things to consider when buying a FP if you plan to
use it for serious work. I will only mention here that you should not
believe the "response time" that is advertised by Dell or anyone else.
They are constantly being joked about at the display conferences.

One of the monitors I have on my desk is from Dell (but branded by
someone else who will go unnamed). The panel cost more than $1k and
they advertise a response time below 25ms which sounds very nice.
This turns out to be true for black --> white and white --> black
transitions. But what do you suppose the black --> mid-grey response
time is? Would you believe 140ms!!! So a moving black object on a grey
background will level a black comet tail as long as your arm.

Lots of other things to consider but I can't go into them now. If
your goal is to run KDE and do day-to-day text processing/programming,
just about any FP monitor will be fine. But if you do serious gaming,
or professional graphics design, (where colour is important), or
motion research (where response is important), or medical X-ray work
(where Dynamic range and contrast ratio are important) well, caveat
emptor.

Have you looked at the docs:
file:///usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/Xinerama-HOWTO.html

Maybe you need to edit your /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers file as explained in
the HOWTO in order to start the xinerama extensions.

I am not authoritative of this but it seems to me that the "grey out"
problem is a function of the configuration utility, having little to do
with whether KDE is compiled to support it or not. Just a guess from
the peanut gallery.

2002-07-11 Thread Dean S. Messing

I normally _strongly_ dislike including all previous text from
every message in a thread in the current message. But maybe
there's some wisdom in it :-)

:: Where did you get your KDE rpms?

>From my very 1st first message:

I'm running Mandrake 8.2 with stock KDE.

:: If it is MDK's it should have Xinerama
:: support compiled by default and the Enable Xinerama Support option
 :: should not
 :: be grayed out.

It shouldn't, but it is. :-)

:: If it is, then I would suggest that you recompile the RPMS
:: and ensure that the --enable-xinerama option is turned on.
 ::
 :: Balaji

Good suggestion. But I wrote in my second message in this thread:

I don't relish trying to re-compile the kde subsystem. I'm not even
sure what to re-build. I count (at least) 17 .src.rpm files in cooker
associated with kde-3.0.2 and a `rpm -qa| fgrep kde' brings up 24 kde
(2.2.2) related .rpms installed on my current Mdk 8.2 system. I think
configuring and building a kernel (which I've done) looks easier than
trying to rebuild kde.

In other words, the task daunts me. But if someone
could shed some (more) light on things I'll give it a try.

Please note: I am quite familiar with building .rpm's from .src.rpm's
and I've hacked (in a limited way) my share of .spec files so
there's no need to go into this.

I need to know if I should rebuild _all_ the packages or just some
subset of them. Also, consideration shd be given to the
question of "Is this a big waste of time?". I mean, if the
Mdk KDE packages are known to be compiled with xinerama support
enabled then recompiling them with xinerama support enabled shouldn't
(in a causal universe) fix my "grey out" problem.

Finally, please forgive the wry tone of this note. I'm so frustrated
by the time I've wasted on this that I've actually toyed (for a
millesecond or two) with the idea of trashing linux entirely, and
going over to XP^H^H... no I won't say it. I'm a long-time advocate
of linux so this was just a passing moment of insanity. But my
frustration is, I fear, coming out as sarcasm. Sorry!

Dean

I have a mandrake webserver here and a week ago I changed the memory out in
it. up till this point it had been running 3 months without a reboot. It ran
one week and then all of a sudden stopped responding to anything but ping.
all services shutdown. being it is a remote machine I got it turned off and
back on and it started back up fine but this was in the log files:

Dec 17 00:02:05 nix kernel: ll_rw_block: Trying to read nonexistent
block-device 00:01 (983049)
Dec 17 00:02:05 nix kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)):
ext2_write_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=484028, block=983049
Dec 17 11:58:34 nix syslogd 1.3-3: restart.

Any ideas as to what has happened here? Please email all responses to

If you just killed X and kept running like that, init will try and
restart (x|k|g)dm periodically. You probably need to become root, then
type "init 3" to change to a runlevel where init won't try and restart
X. Then fix X (using XFDrake, Xconfigurator, XF86Config - in this order
preferably). If you can then start X again, try changin run-levels back
to 5, "init 5" as root, and if it works, all is well.

[expert] Re: Digest for list expert

2000-10-23 Thread paddock

Hi, good folks!

I apologize in advance for cluttering up the "Expert" list with stuff from a Newbie,
but this is one I haven't a clue how to trace and solve.

A couple of days ago, I was faced with what appeared to be a locked-up "X" ("kdm" from
all evidence -- it's whatever Mandrake 7.1 installed for me), so I did the "X"
3-finger salute of and after 15 seconds (or so), I got to log
back in. Ever since then (through several shutdowns, also, btw!), every 5 minutes, I
get a string of the following in the syslog (I follow the log with "tail" to watch my
firewall in action!):

Oct 23 13:37:02 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:02 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:02 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:03 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:04 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:04 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:04 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:04 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:06 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:

running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:07 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:

Oct 23 13:37:08 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:

Oct 23 13:37:11 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:11 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:11 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:11 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:13 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:13 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:13 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:13 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:14 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:14 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:14 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:14 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:16 localhost kdm: extra arguments on command line:
Oct 23 13:37:16 localhost kdm: "lang.sh-end"
Oct 23 13:37:16 localhost kdm:
Oct 23 13:37:16 localhost kdm: Can't lock pid file /var/run/xdm.pid, another xdm is
running (pid 735)
Oct 23 13:37:16 localhost init: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

At this moment, doing

  ps -ef | grep [k]dm

returns the following (spacing may not be accurate):

  root 7351 0 12:04 ?00:00:00 kdm lang-sh-end
  root 1798 735 0 12:10 ?00:00:00 [kdm]

I've tried killing various combinations of the pids mentioned (in this example, "735"
and "1798"); this just gives me the opportunity to log in again and restart all my
background stuff up again.

I've tried putting a "SIGSTOP" on the what I deduce is the "child" (because of the
parent pid
not being "1"), but it just resumes itself (or something else resumes it) and 5
minutes later I get another rash of the "Can't lock pid file" activity.

Whew. Is there someone reading this who 1) knows what's going on; and 2) can tell me
how to make it stop happening? I know I can stop it by reinstalling the OS, but this
isn't the Redmond OS, one isn't supposed to have to reinstall for silliness like this!

Apologies again, and TIA!

RE: [expert] Re: Digest for list expert

2000-09-11 Thread Chris Burkhart

I have the F560, and out of the box everything works fine except for sound
and USB. I haven't had a lot of time to spend fooling with it, but I
imagine both of those can be made to work. The sound driver is the Yamaha
Legacy, which has kernel support (but I think the one in the sony's is
slightly different). The USB needs to have the IRQ/IOAddr information
passed to it when inserting it (I think .. when i try to insmod without, it
errors out and says it can't find the device, so that is my guess), but I
don't know what the proper arguments to pass are.
