Under the GPL the person who distributes the binary is responsible for distributing the source it doesn't matter whether it's been modified or not. I think it's acceptable for them to point you at someone else's website and say "there's the SRPM, it's exactly the same as the one we used". However It is not acceptable to point someone to the website and tell them to get the tarball from there. As the GPL says >For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for >all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, >plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the >executable. ie the rpm spec file is also a requirement. Is there some reason they don't want the SRPMs available or is it just an oversight? Anyway, I think I'll mail someone at MandrakeSoft directly to try find out, Fergal

For the packages that aren't modified (ie. only recompiled to i586 form) then the source code to the RedHat versions would be just as good, available at any RedHat mirror. I haven't read it in a while, what does the GPL say about distribution without modification? Tony

Actually there should be quite a bit less than 1,000. Many SRPMS build several packages. For example, the kernel src.rpm builds all of the alsa RPMS as well as all of the kernel RPMS and the reiserfs-utils and MandrakeUpdate also builds urpmi and grpmi. -- Anton GrahamGPG ID: 0x18F78541 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> RSA key available upon request Authors are easy to get on with -- if you're fond of children. -- Michael Joseph, "Observer"

No, I'm referring to 7.1, I have no problem finding the cooker stuff. This is completely against the GPL, they must make the source available. As was said before, someone from Mandrake should clear this up on the list, Fergal

How many SRPMS for MDK-7.1 do you find at: ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake/SRPMS/ You are referring to the mandrake-devel directory not 7.1. Fergal is quite correct: the SRPMS for Mandrake 7.1 have not been properly put on the mirror sites. I for one won't install 7.1 until I also have the source. Since a number of people have asked this question, I also have to wonder whether the terms of the GPL are being honoured? If anyone at MandrakeSoft is listening, please sort this out. Tony.

Thanks, Dunno what you're talking about, the main mirror at ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake-devel/SRPMS contains right now 936 SRPMS.
